    📚Description: I've never been a big fan of the non-reverse firebird. It has a confusing name, a weird body shape and nothing really unique about it unlike the (Reverse) Firebird with the neck through construction. There has always been one series that has intrigued me though - the SWIRL paint jobs with humbuckers. The first decade of the custom shop was rather experimental but I'm happy to have one of these in my collection. I'm not entirely sure right now if these were a small run, NAMM Show display pieces that took (few) custom orders or what, but the swirl paint was later reused on the Firebird X so these might've influenced that! I've seen Blue, Green and Copper Swirls for this original run.

      Starry, starry night,
      Paint your Firebirds blue and green,
      Then by Trogly they'll be seen,
      And one will end up being on his show.
      Trogly got the blue,
      Well, if you could, then wouldn't you,
      It's not something we all can do,
      A custom shop guitar soon was in his hand.
      Now we understand, how it feels and how the pickups sound,
      He said the neck felt nice and round,
      I'm sure fun times would abound,
      We all listened, it sounded quality
      It'll cost too much for me.

    The guitar should be called Aqua Fresh.

    Maybe why the cleans are appealing.

    My understanding of the *“reverse”* was due to the _“lower horn”_ (or bout, which has the pickup selector) stuck out further than the _“upper horn”_ (which has the strap button). As far as I know, these terms were *not* invented by Gibson and were created years after the guitars were released. 😊

    • @dw7704
      @dw7704 2 місяці тому +1

      This is correct, but the headstock thing is how I remember it, as the body doesn’t seem reversed to me, but the headstock is.
      And, yes the terms came later

    The original non-reverse Firebirds came out in mid-1965, replacing the older 1963 reverse ones. Supposedly it was done under pressure from Fender, who felt that the reverse models violated their design patent on the offset waist body, as used on Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Jazz Basses, and Electric XIIs. The earlier reverse Firebirds weren’t selling all that well, and when Fender told Gibson to cease and desist, Gibson responded with a design that looked even more like a Fender Jazzmaster! I don’t know if that story is true or not-it seems a little far-fetched-but Gibson’s intent was to make Firebirds easier to produce by eliminating the neck-through construction of the reverse models. At the same time, they went with the large batwing pickguard on SGs so they could use the same body routing for all four SG models, and a little earlier, they’d replaced the stopbar tailpieces on ES models with archtop-style trapeze ones, which were easier to install. Cost-cutting across the board! That’s why a lot of us who remember, feel that the Golden Age of Gibson ended in 1965, when Ted McCarty resigned as CEO and Stan Rendell, who was a financial officer (bean counter) took over, and then came the sale to Norlin. I don’t think that Norlin initially set out to ruin Gibson, but they sure cut a lot of corners! My first Gibson was a batwing-pickguard SG Standard that I got new in 1967, and it wasn’t nearly as good as the ‘61-‘65 ones, and in ‘65 they changed their nut width across the board from 1-11/16” to 1-9/16”. I don’t know why they did that, unless they were trying to compete with Mosrites, which had ridiculously skinny necks at 1-1/2” at the nut. Like a Jazz Bass, only with six strings crammed into the space of four.

    There was a soap here in Germany many, many years ago that had exactly the same blue and white pattern, which was supposed to be associated with sea freshness. But aside from that, I don't particularly like the shape of the guitar as well, even though I have a 1965 non-reverse Firebird. But what makes these special are the P90 pickups, which produce a great sound. I love Leslie West's guitar playing and my instrument, which is now almost 60 years old, never ceases to amaze me.

    Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers, Govt Mule, The Dead) uses Non Reverse Thunderbirds a lot, outside of his signature Les Pauls. Mini Humbuckers and Alternate tunings. He has a couple of Starts but they don't get pulled much. His P90 models get used for single coil type stuff.

      @@Troghey Trogley. I just saw a post on a Les Paul owners page on face book. This guy is looking to possibly trade an alpine white Standard with gold hardware for his Appetite model. I suggested he contact you since he sounds a like he has some trepidations on this trade. I informed him you have fees for help. He also said he's git a few days to ponder the deal. And he has plenty of pictures and some other information on the Standard. Don't know if he'll take the advice to seek a help session or not .

    The paintjob looks like a hydro dipped type finish. Im not confident thats how it was painted but thats what it looks like to me.

    I've always preferred the look of the Non-reverse Firebird. I'm not liking the painted sides of the fretboard & on the nut. Cool paint.

    There was one point when a daydreamed about raising enough money to get a triple-pickup Non-reverse Firebird. I had to remind myself that it probably wouldn't do the things I thought it would.

    Jazzmasters are my favorite Fender so for years I've had a desire to play a non reverse bird. Some day.

      Same! The first thing I noticed about non-reversed firebirds is how similar they look to Jazzmasters.

    Somewhere along the Firebird history, Fender got annoyed with it's similarity to the Jazzmaster & Jaguar offset body shape, which Leo had Patented. I think Fender sent legal letters (cease & desist?).

    Forget treble bleeds ("resistor capacitor mod"). Just jump a wire or capacitor from the bottom lug of tone pot to the middle lug of volume pot. It's easy and it works. That's just my opinion, but it is the 50s Gibson wiring style after all. (edit): i have done this to a single coil telecaster and it sounds better to me now.

    15:44 if you look at the mini toggle switch inside the cavity you can see the two yellow wires that cross each other right? Those put the pickups in reverse in humbucker mode, that's also why the switch has twice as many layers as it needed if it was just a coil split. Definitely a deliberate decision.

    • @PeterMoore350
      @PeterMoore350 2 місяці тому

      Does that mean when it’s in the middle position and the toggle switch is activated it doesn’t go out of phase? I’m curious if both pickups are split in the middle position too. Cheers

      @@PeterMoore350 sorry im not quite getting the question, not a native speaker.
      This means that in humbucker mode the middle Position is Split. In single coil mode not. You could turn that around, Do that with two switches instead of one, Do it on the toggle switch on a push pull... Whatever you like.

    It is because of the horn, the longer usually on top. Reverse on bottom.

    The NRFB is awsome but they should have named the shape something other than Firebird, like they named the bass Thunderbird. Comparing this to the Reverse FB is like comparing a Les Paul and an SG, they are just different and the similar names are just too confusing

    Brilliant. The only thing I don't really like...is that finish. It looks like melted crayon, badly mixed spray paint and very think, "bowling alley grade" gloss. It sounds great, though!

  • @danmc_2783
    @danmc_2783 2 місяці тому +1

    Hey Austin, if you take a look at the mini toggle switch, you'll notice that it's a 4PDT type which has twice as many poles as what you'd usually find. That's because that switch is configured to both split the coils and to reverse the phase of one, you'll notice the guitar is in phase when it's in split coil mode. So definitely a deliberate decision to have the middle position out of phase when running standard, then in phase for the singles

    Funny, the Non-Reverse Firebird is the only one I can stand from Gibson‘s "Modern" line. All of the other pointy guitars seem to look ungainly and lacking in balance as if they are a response to Fender‘s offset models from the same era, but going out of their way to be as different as possible.
