Everything mentioned here about cornering reminds me of one of the racing game that I played long time ago. Can't remember which game but I remember the phrase "enter slow, exit fast".
Nice drive uncle... The older Mazda 2 really gave me a good impression when I had a short drive in a friend's car. The sport button makes your feet feel hooked on to the speed of the car. Turn in is crisp and very agile. Lovely car.
Uncle seems so calm and relaxed driving the car! At those speeds, I will probably be sweating profusely, my adrenaline levels will be super high and I won't be able to sleep for the next 2 nights! Haha!
Great video, I have a question about my hand position on the steering wheel, on the tighter corners, when I turn the wheel 180 degrees, my hands are crossed. As I don't change my hand positions on the steering wheel. That's how I was taught to drive. I see you change your hand position all the time, is that so you leave yourself extra input if the car understeers? Thanks!
You are absolutely right. I am using the push- pull technique taught in British style. The German style is hand over hand, which I assume you have been taught. However I think you may have missed one important step - when your hands are nearly crossed, you are supposed to lift one hand over the other hand and take up a new position so that you are not crossed up Your instrictor dis not do a complete job. There are many videos explaining both methods on the internet.
Thank you Uncle YS for doing the video! Such a lovely drive. Btw do you think there is much of a difference when compared to the pre-face lift model? Since the latest one comes with GVC Plus.
Hi Uncle YS great driving as always, just wondering does manually shifting do more strain to the gearbox than the gearbox shifting by itself in auto for such driving?
hi uncle YS, would like to ask, does driving the car at high rpm not hurt the gearbox/engine? I have the same Mazda 2 2020 as well but i cant be bothered to push the RPM so high, worried that it might hurt the gearbox/engine. What do you think?
@@danielikmal8278 ahhh i see, but the higher the RPM, the more fuel it consumes right, but does it not hurt the gearbox by using paddle shifts all the time?
Hi Uncle Khong , after watching this video... I have a question .... When we shift down the gear in our automatic tranmission car ... we need to do rev matching ? Or we just let the car do what they can do ?
We just let the car do it. There is no rev matching: I just step on the ACC pedal so the rev goes up to match the gear speed. For cornering, we shift down to put the car into positive traction around the corner by accelerating, and to exit under acceleration. All the slowing down is done primarily by the brakes as we approach the corner. Some gear boxes do have rev matching, like VW, Renault, Honda and some of the more expensive DCT boxes. Same as the new Hyundai I30n that we tested.
Hi Uncle, I'm little bit hesitate to press the fuel pedal when going up hill because I'm afraid the loud engine noice and high rpm will break my car engine. This always makes me anxious ...is it ok to just press the pedal hard to get good speed when going up hill.
That's the very basics of power delivery. If you don't do it you will never get the max power out of the engine. Use the rev counter as a guide - do not go over the red line
Thats's a 2 hp difference. I guess it boils down to what you want in a car. Maybe some City and Mazda2 owners might want to comment here? My take is that there is no perfect car, and that there is no really bad car, just what suits your needs best.

I'm Honda Jazz owner which has the exact same engine as City. I would say Mazda 2 is faster in acceleration and Jazz is slightly faster in high speed as the i-vtec engine will start doing the work when it reached 5k rpm above. I had tested this for so long and I'm sure that the i-vtec does exist rather than marketing gimmick, but i was abit regret about not going with Mazda 2, just like Uncle said he would choose the mazda 2 because of 6 speed and paddle shifter, it is way better than CVT on the Jazz for sure. Just more fun to drive and the sound of gear changing is alot better too though the Jazz does have paddle shift with V spec model, still no way close as traditional gearbox.
Always like to watch YS Khong videos!! very educational. I've got a question with paddle shifters, do you lift off the throttle before shifting down/up with paddle shifter? Thank you!!
Yes. Throttle pressure depends on the situation though. If you can take a good line, you are straightening out before the apex and accelerating out in a straight line.
Wah see the car perform so well at bends and its ability to pull to 160km/h quite effortlessly with a 1.5+6AT combo, I also feel like buying one dy if I have the financial means 😁😁. Btw good effort Uncle! Not many people did dare to take a small car that spirited in rain. Does it body roll much? The previous gen Mazda 2 has some obvious body roll at bends :(
Mr. Khong, noticed you used a lot of engine breaking in your video. If I'm using the same technique in daily driving in cornering or slowing down before traffic light, will it cause any severe damage to the transmission in long run?
Not of you know what you are doing. But in daily driving, you probably don't need to do this because you are going a lot slower and driving more relaxed.

The CVT acceleration is also quite good, just that some people are not used to the constant high rev and the speed catching up with the engine sound. The 2 cars would be similar in performance. However the hatch handling would be slightly better just because of the weight distribution. You can only tell the difference at the limits so for R the ordinary folk, they are the same.
