  • This is a deleted scene from Walt Disney's Fantasia. It is a really nice calm mood piece.

    I really miss this kind of animation and filmography, back when the cinematography got its message across artistically by linking just a few motives, as does the music it represents.

      Despite both Walt Disney, and De Bussey both being jerks in their private lives, they somehow "clicked" at a mysterious artistic level here!...I think most of us can agree, that the level of hand-made, truly gorgeous animation displayed here, will never be matched by CGI effects!...and the level of humanistic, touching chordal structures created by De Bussey move most of us to emotional tears of joy, just to be alive in this era...Why are we humans so blessed with creativity, and also cursed with such negative qualities?

    This is strange to watch. I had seen Fantasia as a child, and fell in love with it. To watch this now, knowing it's deleted, stirs something in me, as if I am reliving my childhood in a way, bringing back a piece of it that I didn't even know it was missing. Clair de Lune is a magical piece in and of itself, and to see Disney bring it to life really inspires me. I can see why they cut it; they had a time frame and this isn't the most lively piece of music, but it has a mystical beauty to it.

    Oh, wow! I never knew there was a deleted scene! It's like discovering a secret compartment in a treasure chest! It was so beautiful, the music, the scenery, everything. You can tell it's from a time when animation was an art form, and Disney was its Da Vinci. *sigh* they don't make 'em like this anymore

    I saw this as a child sometime in the late 50's maybe. It must have been on TV if the scene has been deleted. I remember thinking that the music was the most beautiful music that I had ever heard and told my dad so. This takes me way back...

    absolutely beautifull!!! Disney was a real genius; it's so well done, the timing and images of the animation are so exactly chosen, the moment when the bird hoovers up and comes down... just as one would dream it to be; he felt the music so well! and I love Debussy: I played this piece a lot myself. Thanks a lot

    Fantasia was supposed to be a repertoire film, changing on section each year& rerelease it, this was to be the first replacement scene, yes they did use the animation in Make Mine Music but the music was blue bayou, I watched that movie on VHS shut off sound& played this on my stereo, its a perfect match

      I know. it would be nice though. when I watch Fantasia someday, I'll watch Clair De Lune as an extra. it's like when there's a deleted scene in Star Wars is when Han Solo meets Jabba. and it was added in the 1997 Special Edition version of A New Hope. and yeah. I think it sounds like a love song. and when I have a girlfriend soon, I could show it to her.

    The original Fantasia is already 2 hours long which explains the cut. Don't forget that in those times most films were 90 minutes long with a few shorts before the main feature. Though deleted from the film, that scene was not lost; it was recuperated for "Make Mine Music" in 1946 with a different background tune. This film illustrated 10 popular songs (instead of Fantasia's classical pieces. ;D

      I would have loved to have had this fine piece of musical inspiration performed on electric guitar, perhaps by Jimi Hendrix--who did indeed create some very sensitive, touching tunes. I think he would have made a wonderful alternative work of art, out of this tune...He would often listen to classical music, despite his impoverished upbringing and tough life.

    Moved to tears I say..such music conveys the human experience where words fail.
    The symphony of many individuals whose united efforts synchronize so many minds in unison to such a beautiful vision. Like a conduit to the soul. Debussy's moment is felt as such extacy to behold that it agonizes the heart to tears to know the moment like life itself is beautiful to behold from beginning to end.

      Everyone here should read about De Bussey's life and times...he was considered a rebellious musical genius...and he was also quite a narcissist, and seemed to enjoy falling in love with other men's wives!...nontheless, he obviously created some intensely moving, soulful music...as for Disney, most of us have heard of his being quite a ruthless hard-ass with his animators, and not paying them what they were really worth!...and yet, he created so much joy and good entertainment for us "Boomers"!...I guess we humans are just complex, and flawed.

    Imagine being the animators of this missing piece of cultural film art and never being able to know when it would be released, or if it even will at all to the public? The water ripples and glimmering must've taken them several months or even years to produce, having the technology they had back then, or the lack of it. So beautiful. I don't see why it couldn't have been included in the original film... but what a wonderful discovery!

      Carolina Gonçalves Well, sadly, Fantasia failed at the box office during it's original release because audiences knew Disney as funny cartoons and fairytale films, so a feature-length animated film with classical music and very little dialogue was seen as un-Disney-like and too pretentious. Walt Disney himself intended to release a new Fantasia every year, with rotating animated sequences like the changing annual programs at theater houses. This idea had to be scrapped since he lost a lot of money after releasing Fantasia.
      The development of Disneyland and Disney World and his eventual death stopped any chances of reviving Fantasia. During the 80s, a sort-of sequel named "Musicana" with world folk music and folktales was planned but never finished.
      After the Disney Renaissance in the 90s, the company finally had a big enough budget to make Fantasia 2000. So far no one knows if Fantasia will be revived a third time.

    • @schizoidboy
      @schizoidboy 5 років тому

      Disney once told someone that he didn't make money on it, but he wasn't sorry he made it. Now that's art.

    • @schizoidboy
      @schizoidboy 5 років тому

      Supposedly Disney planned on making more of these films and also planned to add old scenes with the new just as they did with Fantasia 2000. So if they ever get around to making another Fantasia they ought to add this one in it.

  • @TonyWDA
    @TonyWDA 11 років тому

    Then take comfort, because in spite of Walt's frustrations with the production and reception of Fantasia, he was rarely if *ever* remembered for outright hating it. John Culhane, a film historian fortunate enough to have met Walt when he was only 17, quoted him as saying "You know, it still hasn't made any money... but I don't regret making it, because this is what I should have been doing with the medium when I made it."
    Can't say much for "Alice". Don't know enough about its history. :x

  • @miniroll32
    @miniroll32 13 років тому

    It all came down to running time. Sure, its only around 5 minutes long, but just think that when RKO took over distribution of the film in 1941 (to try and make it profitable) they cut it into something that would barely be recognisable. One source suggests it was only an hour and twenty minutes long! It would have been nice though, just for historical contexts, if this sequence was shown even just in the premiere.

  • @MatthewGeoffino
    @MatthewGeoffino 15 років тому

    This is a priceless piece of history, and a fine example of why people need to hire someone to scour the Disney Vaults and other related places to find these wonderful things just tucked away.
    The biggest shame is that the Deems Taylor footage at the beginning and Leopold Stokowski's actual conducting of this piece (they reused Tocotta and Fugue footage and only recolored it) has not and probably never will be found. I wanted to know what Taylor had to say about this.

    I love Fantasia but I wish this along with Swan of Tuonela was fully animated and put into the film instead of The Pastoral Symphony. Its got good music and artwork but I feel that section was kind of a step downward into Seven Dwarfs territory. Dance of the Hours was better but I usually skip the two to get to the masterpiece ending: Night on Bald Mountain / Ave Maria

    no offense, but why people mention the movie Twilight so much ?, in almost every video i see that has nothing to do with that super geeky movie someone makes a comment about it. Its like the Star Wars obssesed fans that always mention someting about it no matter what the topic is.

    Walt Wanted To Do A Contining Fantasia Making New Segments Like Clair De Lune And Many Other Segments.Stokowski Recorded All Of Them.
    But The Concept Was Abandoned In 1941 And All Of Died Including Clair De Lune.

    wow thats wierd because i love this song and knew about it long before i read twilight. and so what if people learned about it from twilight its just a new insight in classical music for them.

    It makes me wonder why this was never included in the original Fantasia movie.
    I personally think it would have looked nice in between the Pastoral and the Dance of The Hours.

    If this was inserted, it would be between Pastoral Symphony and Dance of the hour because it fits with the continual time system, a smooth flow of the film, and be closer to the finale.

    My favorite part is the water scene showing the reflection of the moon and calmly distorts its image from the ripples. Beautifully serene and this piece has become my favorite one since i first saw this.

    I have to agree with beabalanced because this entire movie is just completely fills you with incredible classics like this beautiful and perhaps my favorite Debussy piece Clair De Lune, simply enchanting images that bring out the "child at heart" in all of us! But, what I don't get is why Deems Taylor's voice sounded like it was dubbed over! But, be that as it may I still love this wonderful Disney classic and I'm so happy that I still have this movie on vhs! ;)

    @rbrown6984 Woah woah woah!....Rap/Hip-Hop is only garbage on the radio...if you turn off your radio and keep your mind open musically you'll hear amazing music no matter what genre it may be....All Hip-Hop is,is poetry with a beat backing it. Look for artists like Lupe Fiasco,J Dilla(who's music was recently was made into a suite for an orchestra) or Pete Rock they make Hip-hop a art.
    Again the radio/mainstream ruins rap....
    BTW I dig this and Rap....

    Yes, the images are just the ones seen during the Blue Bayou sequence from Make Mine Music, the sequence was deleted from Fantasia becouse of its huge lenght. The images are just too beautiful for the Blue Bayou song, the piece was born on Debussy's melody and for me have to be heard with this music. The Fantasia's bluray was the ideal occasion to restore and restaurate this sequence, Disney didn't do that and didn't include "Lorenzo", "One By One" and "The Little Matchgirl"'s sequence either...

    @frenchkitty Geeky? Twilight is a cheesy romantic movie for teen girls. I have no idea how you manage to connect that with geeky. However bringing Star Wars fans into the picture as the geekcliché of all geekclichés. I deem you prejudiced with eyes only seeing the stereotype. Also, as a matter of fact; Twilight is most likely mentioned just as often as people complain about its excessive mentioning. Thus, mentioning it puts you in no better a seat than the twilightmentioners.

    My earliest exposure decades ago to Claire de Lune was this particular Disney animation. I'm sure of it. In fact, I came here specifically anxious to see the moonlight dancing upon the ripples once again, so strong was the impression it made.
    So if the segment wasn't included in one of Fantasia's re-releases, it must have aired as a stand-alone on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color or its incarnations long before 1996.
