Note: The Nest Thermostat E now has auto-schedules like the Nest Learning Thermostat. Nest Secure has been discontinued and is no longer available for purchase on the Google store, but existing systems will continue to function normally The ecobee thermostats now work with Google Assistant in addition to Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The Ring Video Doorbell Pro, Stick Up Cam Wired and Spotlight Cam Wired now have person detection with a Ring Protect plan. Blink now offers up to 60 days of cloud storage.
This is the Ring vs Nest review to end all reviews, comparing tons of products like the #RingVideoDoorbell2, the #NestSecure security system, the #NestHelloVideoDoorbell, along with tons of other great products from Google and Amazon-owned companies.

In this video, I’m taking you through my Amazon house, filled with smart home products from #Blink, #RingAlarm, and the #AmazonCloudCam, and my Google house, filled with Nest products. From indoor cameras and outdoor cameras to security systems, video doorbells, smart thermostats, and smart smoke and C.O detectors, I’ll give you the most comprehensive view of an Amazon vs. Google and Ring vs Nest smart home.
Overall, I think that the Nest system is more cohesive, as it’s all under one brand. Amazon, on the other hand, is composed of three different brands, the Amazon Cloud Cam, Ring, and Blink. While these components can all work together, the disparity of the brands does make installation a bit more difficult. However, Nest products are much more expensive than Amazon’s slew of products, so that’s something to keep in mind as well.
After I give you a brief overview of the defining characteristics of Ring vs Nest, I’ll get into specific product comparisons. As far as security systems go, I’m comparing Ring Alarm to #NestSecure, both very minimalist systems with optional 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup. I added indoor and outdoor cameras to my security systems, namely the Amazon Cloud Cam and the #RingStickupCamWired from Ring and the #NestCamIndoor and #NestCamIQIndoor from Nest. Now, Nest has more technologically advanced cameras than Ring, but again, you will have to pay significantly more.
After the indoor cameras, we’ll compare the #BlinkXT2 and the #RingSpotlightCamBattery to the #NestCamOutdoor and #NestCamIQOutdoor, which are pretty equal to their indoor counterparts in terms of features and pricing. Aside from the basic security system and cameras, I’ll cover smart thermostats, namely the #ecobee4 vs. the #NestThermostat and #NestProtect, plus smart hubs and speakers from each company.

Very quality and thorough comparison. That aside, I loved the dramatic "tale of the tape" lineup between each element in the first few minutes of the video. Excellent editing with visuals, music and verbiage had me on the edge of my seat!

Dude, I agree with that other guy who says that he never really comments, but for you, we have to. You have that depth and good voice. Good job done. Very well edited. Mighty impressive. Well done. I hope you make enough from these videos
Yes! Yes! Thank you. I’m in the process of trying to decide which ecosystem I want to commit....ring or nest. This video is exactly what I needed!! 😍😍
Awesome, so glad it was helpful! There's also a written version with tons of info: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
Your my favorite UA-camr for information like this. Your voice is soothing instead of annoying like a lot. The last video I went to watch was a computer electronic voice & I hate those. Thanks for all your information!

Thank you. I've been wanting to install security, but I didn't know where to start. You've helped me a lot. I know what makes sense for me and what doesn't.
New Subscriber. One well produced, informative and thorought review which includes different camera types. I am a believer that having one brand only is a detrimental security flaw. Personally, I have accumulated one Nest Outdoor camera which does its main purpose for what I needed it for vs 3 wired ring cameras and just purchased the Ring Peephole camera which does it own purpose. Outside of that , I just purchased a panasonic Homehawk window home monitoring and the Reolink Argust PT w/ Solar panel. In other words, i am "diversifying" my home security "portafolio" and shelling my hard earned money out the door. :P Good job on your review and you gained me as a permanent subscriber. (Two Thumbs up)
The best review and comparison I have watched on youtube regarding both systems! Keep up the great work!
Wow, thanks!
Your videos are so well researched and put together- they look like research papers with proper MLA/APA citations, but in video form. And I'm HERE FOR IT

Thank you for such a thorough review, this has definitely helped me make some decisions about our home's security devices :)
A wonderful detailed explaination of both systems. I was engaged from beginning to end.
I rarely like or comment on a video but i really appreciate this review. Thanks for taking the time to make it happen!

I am the same. I liked the last comment about what market these two systems seem to be marketing to. Nest to the small apartment/condo dweller and Ring to the single-family home dweller with land & multiple entrances. It will be interesting to see which one adds more to the investment of the system over the next 2 years (and at what cost).
I'm impressed by the professionalism your video. Not only the making/producing, and content but the delivery of the information as well.
thank you for sharing your take on personal experience. I am a single woman in the suburbs and your recap helped; I liked all your videos too.
I’m moving into a townhouse and I’m really thinking of getting the ring! These reviews are definitely helping me to make an informed decision.
As we appreciate your valuable shopping insights. How well does the infrared camera feature work. Can we see people body temperature behind walls.
This was super informative and extremely helpful, thanks for the deep dive!

Attaching the doorbell to the mount is a little difficult but once it locks into place it seems extremely sturdy. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxHZwMa8CsRjYhf9s4W8w0Dwm47uytWOp I replaced my regular doorbell with this and hard wired it in, using my existing wires and mechanical chime. It works perfect so far and integrates perfectly with my blink camera system. It also works seamlessly with Alexa
Thanks for the great video this really helped me make an educated choice for setting up my house with some smarthome gear. I'll definitely be looking at more of your reviews great work here!!!
Always place a cam facing away from walls or shelves or you will get bad results with night vision from led lights bouncing back onto lens causing washout.. great reviews on all products thank you !
You're welcome, Peter! More info on Ring vs. Nest here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
Peter Williams thanks
I was going to say the same thing in their reviews of the infrared functions on the cameras. I think they had a distance issue with the Stick-up camera by Ring, and the two indoor camera reviews on the wall picking up too much IR reflection on the surfaces nearest to the camera & washing everything out in the distance.
Excellent comparison and very in depth, but not too nerdy. Great job, will recommend.
A very impressive video. I enjoyed the in-depth comparison of different brands and products.

Were watching your brilliant review and installation of the Ring Stick Up Cam battery. We notice that your not including connectivity to Solar power units with all these brilliant scientific research devices of advance technology.
I have Ring and honestly I love it. The cameras are great. I just have to wait and see how long the battery last It was easy to set up and it’s very easy to add additional devices. I can’t complain. I never used Nest but I heard it was good. But for the price, I’ll probably just stick with Ring.
Had ring for 4 years is starting so slow down n lags. Not happy with it anymore
I got the nest family kit through T-Mobile about two years ago. It was $500 and the subscription was $10/mo. It included the base, 2 detectors, 1 camera. I took it back after two false alarms in less than a week. I don’t have any pets so I have no idea why it was triggering so often. I’ve now got a ring peephole camera and I like it so far. No false triggers on the motion detector and the video is okay for the price.
What camera did you buy
thatjlyn for ring or nest?
excellent video man. this is exactly what i was looking for as far as comparison video thanks

15:36 is because of "Infared Flooding". The LED IR lights on the Stick up cam are being reflected from the table back onto the camera, Causing it to only focus on the table. The position of the camera is the obvious culprit.
Thank you for taking the time and producing this very informative video. God Bless You.
Both basically do the same but nest is nicer and more expensive. Ring base station connects to third party hardware like doorbell locks, z wave smoke/co detectors etc.
Nice video. Which one would you recommend for the garage and the front door that has 2-way audio? I do not want the door bell, just the camera. Thanks.
This was the best comparison video. Thank you.

The Nest IQ Outdoor Camera is best if your home has a cover/porch to shield it from rain and snow. I've gone through 3 camera replacements - the camera fails to power on. A lot of homeowners have had similar issues to mine. I've attached a very helpful explanation from another customer explaining the issue on google's nest website:
"camera mount does not provide a waterproof seal around the USB cable and USB connector in the Nest camera. Once water enters the space, the female USB connector deteriorates rapidly causing power disruption or the "red outer ring flashing" indicating insufficient power. I have gone through 5 cameras, mounted both vertically and horizontally, and they have all failed about a week after it rains. Nest needs to fix this "weatherproofing" issue to resolve these types of problems in the future."
Thanks for this, Joann! Glad you're liking your Nest Cam IQ Outdoor. Full review here: bit.ly/2EPVIGT
Awesome information. I recently installed my Nest Hello finally and have so far been happy about it. I do need to see how to effectively put in zones as I'm getting far too many alerts. I also get a lot of sound alerts, but not sure how to "dial" that back. I got it so it doesn't notify me of sound events, but if I look at a day's worth of footage, there are dozens of alerts throughout the day, most of them false positives.
Glad it was helpful!
Watched the video but still can't make my mind around it, plus what do I do if I have older cameras as well, I need a system that can contain all the different devices and give me a report with storage, say something like Ajax-system, do you know any other system similar to this one, cause In my city I can get access to both Nest and Ring, but I would like to mix them. In any case I succeed, is mixing them and connect them with Ajax a good idea???
Honestly, a mix and match is way more pain than it's worth. Constantly having to reset devices, things not connecting right, I would not recommend it
Hello there! It seems that this is not the best idea. Mixing different systems in the hope that everything will work as it should is stupid. This isn't about playing games, it's about the security system that your life may depend on, bro. In fact, if there is an option to purchase ajax, it is best to purchase all products from ajax. You don't install playmarket on your iPhone, do you? The same situation is here. Just think about it and make an informed decision about whether you need it or not. And good luck to you!
We want to know more about testing the abilitie's of the camera zoom and examination abilitie's.
Thank you Gabe! I've been waiting for this video for a long time. You're killing it, btw. I really cant find anyone on youtube that even comes close to your videos. You talk about things that people care about and actually educate us instead of just giving your opinions
Aw, thank you so much Izzy! I really appreciate that.
I agree with that.
@@johntalbert8227 Thanks so much!!
Hi there, I liked your video as it helped me see both sides of the fence but I’m wondering if you’ve compared person detection correctly. On my nest doorbell I get the option for people or motion and I was wondering if ring did the same. I and many other people don’t do motion as it gives a lot of notifications so I’m just wondering if ring is as advanced as nest in that regard.
Thank you for the great video
Hi Thomas, glad you liked the video! Only the Nest Hello has person detection; the Ring doorbells have no AI features whatsoever, so Nest is definitely more advanced in this regard. Here's a comparison of the Ring Video Doorbell 2 vs. the Ring Video Doorbell Pro vs the Nest Hello: bit.ly/2mjDAPc
I really want a video doorbell that would work with a google home hub natively, which is the nest hello but its 230$, one of the ring video doorbells cost only 100$.
Just subbed....you make great informational videos! Keep up the great work!
Amcrest doorbell is the best alternative to ring doorbell. 1 year free subscription (optional) and 128GB micro SD card for recording enough for 4 to 5 years of loop recording.
Thanks, I'll look into it! Very cool.
Thank you for the comprehensive review. All your content is informative, succinct, and easy to digest. Can you provide any comments about buying an electronic door lock and if any model would connect with either security system?
Thank you! You may want to check out our best smart locks review here: www.security.org/smart-locks/best/
Best part of the video was the silliness during the Ring doorbell night vision clip! Hahah
The reason some of the night vision shots looked soo bad is because the IR lights were hitting an object in the foreground and reflecting back into the lens and throwing the exposure out.
If there's nothing within 3 feet of the camera they would be much clearer.
Thanks for the breakdown. I have a nest thermostat but love Amazon and have Alexa devices with can. An electrician installed our Ring doorbell and font and back camera motion activated floodlights. I have a separate alarm system. I love my.Ring! Nest thermostat is greatness though. Again all my Ring stuff was installed by an electrician 😁.
I have Alexa with screens as well! I love Amazon and Ring!
The biggest difference that you need to know is that Ring doorbell pro does NOT allow a continuous live feed on any device echo show or other amazon echos except on your smartphone app. If theres a motion detected or doorbell is rang, you will have to either open the app on ur phone or ask alexa to show the front door camera which takes 3-5 secs. Whereas, I have heard that Nest lets you view the live feed at all times. I have just bought my doorbell pro setup and I find this very annoying having to ask alexa to show me the front camera every single time. I will be returning this.
Hi Sam,
I see what you're saying and that is a good point. That's something Ring should definitely look into in the future. More info on Ring vs. Nest here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
I would recommend YI security camera. Basically the same functions, and with also saved videos, 24/7 recording, playback, 2-way talk, motion detection, and everything. At an affordable price.
The YI cameras are definitely a decent option, but Ring and Nest have a more robust smart home array of products including security systems, thermostats, etc. More info on Ring vs Nest here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
i really love the nest products they seem super solid built. the ring amazon stuff feels a little cheap to me.
Im looking for some thing i can use indoors to keep eye on my dogs and with a good speaker so i can shout at them when they start chewing the door frames and skirting boards,, which one of them have started doing
Had someone place some garbage on our lawn, by the time Ring started recording the person was already gone. 24/7 recording is much better!!
Yes, that's a huge advantage of Nest for sure. More info on Ring vs. Nest here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
I added the newish smart slights to solve that problem for me. So when some one gets close enough to the light on my yard it’s triggers the camera to start and if they walk close enough into the yard my floodlight cam is already recording. And I the smart lights make the yard look nice at night so I didn’t mind buying the extra product.
Excellent presentation and very informative comparing two products. Great job.
I have a nest hello video doorbell and I noticed there is some sort of lamination that is peeling on the front, especially around the button that activates the doorbell. Is this normal/does anyone else have this problem?
Wow! Excellent comparison. Bravo
Went with Ring after your reviews and a few others. Thanks for the detailed info
You are very welcome. please share the channel with your friends.
Thumbs up for the video, thanks. Could you tell me if I can remove the chimes from the Ring Pro doorbell ? I just want to be able to be notified when someone is at my door via the bell push and camera initiating the App on my iPhone and then to speak with them without having to go to the door. Is this possible? My current doorbell is wired and has a chime in the hallway.
Hey, yes you can turn off the chimes. On the Ring app go into settings> doorbell kit settings> change the toggle for "Ring my in-home doorbell" to be off. More info on the Ring Video Doorbell Pro here: bit.ly/2Kp9Jin
I recently got the Nest Outdoor Camera and I have been very impressed so far. My only quarrel is that when it records motion the quality gets grainy and that is an issue if you want a clear video of what is going on etc :/ aside from that I also run Ubiquiti G3 Cameras in the car park and these cameras are great I love them and will probably install another one or two in the future. I also have the Nest Protect Smoke Alarms and they have been amazing this far the batteries have lasted a long time and have been very impressed. What I don't like about Nest now is that Google has broken the ability to use the Apps on Apple TV etc to view the cameras on the TV etc which is just screwed up!
James G Mine works fine just screen mirror your phone with your Apple TV. You can also use chromecast
Should have compared the spotlight cam wired vs the Nest since both are wired and the battery spotlight cam has limitations the wired version doesn’t.
This is the comparison of all the Ring and Nest cameras! More info on each camera here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
Is there a possibility for a deep sentinel review?! Looking at buying it but want to see your POV
thanks!!
Perhaps! We did interview the CEO earlier this year: bit.ly/2l1Oadk
What about remotely (on Winter vacation down South) monitoring a basement boiler located in a not normally illuminated room? The boiler does have a digital readout that would show up. It would be nice to be able to see the floor of the room (no broken pipes means not water on the floor). And it's dark.
thanks for the thorough review! I can't really convince myself to buy wither of these, simply because of the dependency on wireless and cloud. For security, I really need something hardwired and local to the house. Also all the battery powered devices must be a nightmare to keep up with. I want to set it and forget it, and never have to worry about changing batteries. Do you know if there are any other systems out there that might be better for me?
Hello I know because of the cloud you don’t want it but the nest is possible to connect thru cable also if you want athorwise check out eufy
I’m thinking about nest but I do have some Amazon speakers and one small speaker with the video which do you think is better?
Listen, ive had both and Ring is way better. Setting everything up was super easy the app did everything. Ring is much cheaper for alarm monitoring and video storage. 100 bucks a year for Ring alarm monitoring with 60 day video storage. Nest is 300 a year with 30 days video storage. Ring has more options and is compatible everything i use. I would recommend Ring to anyone looking to buy one of these cameras or alarms.
with Ring Pro doorbell you can control the zone for motion detection. i made mine really big so my door cam practically records 24/7..........buy Ring
buy nest
The Ring Spotlight plug in would have been a better option than the battery, it has customization motion zones and you forgot to mention the built in siren on both the battery and the wired one as well as the stick up camera. Siren is 95 dB. All in all, the best bang for your buck is Ring especially with that $10 a month plan since as I said before not only includes the alarm monitoring and cellular backup but 60 cloud recording for unlimited cameras vs Nest aware charges you per camera
Yes, although Nest Aware is actually lowering it's prices...early next year, 30 days will be $6 a month or $60 a year and 60 days will be $12 a month or $120 a year. Still more expensive than Ring but a vast improvement. Anyway, here's my written review of Ring vs. Nest for more info: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
Whoa this is a monster video. I know this took a lot of time. Great job and super helpful 🙏🏾
Thank you so much!
Great detailed review, it helped me decide on the Mercedes or Cadillac system. I had ring before and almost hated the “night-vision” you and the guys did a very good job.
How easy/difficult/feasible is it to mix and match different parts from these? I'm thinking of mostly going with ring but some nest features seem good.
Yes! Can you mix and match products from Amazon and Google?
Will it work together or fight with you?
Thanks Gabe!
Your videos are awesome 👏🏽 and I liked and subscribed right away.

I live in an apartment without a doorbell and in my lease i can not implement a doorbell. Would the ring pro be fine with just having a camera?
No, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro needs an existing transformer. I'd go with the Ring Video Doorbell 2 as it can be battery-operated and doesn't have any installation requirements, so you can just use it as a camera and get the chime plug in as well. Here's links to each:

Hello. Based on your reviews, I'll have to go with Ring based on affordability. But I definitely want the Nest Hello. I have Google home everywhere including the Nest thermostat. Could I use Ring with my Google Assistant? A complete Nest ecosystem is way too costly for me. Either way, it shouldn't be a big deal having Ring Security and keeping all my other Google stuff? What are your thoughts on that? TIA.
If you are buying security cameras today for indoor and outdoor regardless of price brand etc which would it be? Also would you go wireless for outdoor? As you have tested so many I thought your the best person to ask. I need a few outside. Thanks in advance!
Hello,
You should take a look at my best of lists!
Best indoor cameras- bit.ly/2OV43Pc
Best outdoor cameras- bit.ly/2JeoKlQ
I would do wireless if there's nowhere for you to plug in or hardwire your camera outside. Here are a few wireless outdoor options:
Ring Spotlight Cam Battery: bit.ly/30jnowx
eufyCam E: bit.ly/2FA8clq
Blink XT2: bit.ly/2NXTcFn
$10 per month for Ring includes alarm monitoring, cellular back up and cloud recording for unlimited cameras at one address. You should also review the door lock options as Nest only has one lock vs Ring has (at last count) 75 options from different manufacturers with integration into the security system
We have many lock reviews, just not in this video.
Nest Yale Lock: bit.ly/2XHJMPh
And some locks that work with Ring:
Kwikset Smartcode 888: bit.ly/2HIGm9e

Deciding to keep my rimg cams or get nest cams..my google home and goole mini got slow and have to yell and repeat about 3 times so it can answer. Have one Alexa dot and works pretty good with smart devices and seems it has a better mic cause it hears a lot better than google..anyways debating between nest cams so I can switch to google or keep ring cams so I can switch to Alexa all together. Don't k ow what to do
Really enjoyed these reviews and found them very informative. My biggest complaint was sound quality. The speaker speaks very well and very clearly but it seemed, at least to me, that he was louder, more pronounced and clearer when he was starting out his speech about one of the items. About half way thru til the end, you could barely hear him. He was speaking very softly. Turning up my volume solved that but then I had to quickly turn it back down when he started speaking about a different item. That became annoying after a bit because was reviewing a lot of different items. Still, a very good job.
Awesome review! I hope I didn't miss it but I thought I wanted an all Google ecosystem till I realized how expensive it was gonna be. I'm now thinking it'd be best to mix ring and nest. Nest for my thermostat and doorbell (along with my home mini's) and ring for my security. Is there a way to merge the 2 or do I need to use 2 different platforms?
You'll be able to control them with the same voice assistant (Alexa or Google Assistant) but if you combine Nest and Ring, you'll need separate apps. More info on Ring vs. Nest and their apps here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
Thank you Gabe.
This is the information I was looking for.
Both will accept each other’s products to communicate but, two apps are needed.
Thanks Gabe. You don't mention the features of the Ring Flood light camera ie) the increased lighting coverage as a deterrent along with the external alarm. Surely the external alarm is a key feature that Nest doesn't offer?
That is definitely true, but overall Nest cameras are better in terms of video quality, night vision, and artificial intelligence. More info here: bit.ly/2kpHW6D
So you chose not to mention it because you think the nest cameras are better? That doesn’t make sense
@@wuliwong No, I just didn't review that camera so that's why it's not part of the review. It's very similar to the other Ring Spotlight cameras.
Would like to have a separate video on just the doorbell application. I'm still unsure about how necessary it is to have the 1.99 a month service. I wanted to decide about it BEFORE programming and installing the doorbell.
We will add your request to the list.
i don't have an existing door bell at the front. can you do nest door bell without the existing door bell?
You don't need an existing doorbell setup to use Nest Hello, but you'd need to buy the power adapter so you can plug it into an indoor outlet. More info on Nest Hello here: bit.ly/2D3lkyV
That was TREMENDOUS!!
Extremely helpful! Thank you.

After watching this video im going to go old school and do a local hardwired setup . i can always set it up to access video online. i really dont need a bunch of notifications or to monitor on a daily basis.
I believe you have to set up your cameras so they get no or minimal reflection from wall surfaces up close then the night vision will work much better.
Wow looks like you put the effort in. Brautiful color and lightning
Thanks so much! I also do written reviews if you're interested- bit.ly/2kpHW6D
Awesome comparison video and I'm going to go with the Ring/Amazon system to save a little money.

Ring is junk. Go with Amcrest Doorbell.
Bobby A Why do you say that? Not doubting you but would like some specifics to make an educated decision. Thanks
FYI: 7200 seconds equates to 2 hours. That's some interesting advertising
Lots of good info thanks.

A video on your thoughts of the Nest Secure being discontinued and how partnering with ADT can be beneficial to google or not would be awesome. Does ADT partnering with google mean any other google product like the cameras, lock, thermostat work differently? Would you still recommend them over the Amazon products?
Love your videos by the way!
Google NEST sucks. I was given The Nest after relocating and continuing ADT at a different address. All of a sudden they no longer have the capacity to record 24/7 even with the upcharge. I hadn't found this out until I had my mail stolen from my front porch and was told they couldn't show footage because everything passed 3 hours is deleted unless you get the higher subscription.
I really want the Nest but my wallet says Ring doorbell 2. I don't need anything for inside the home.
The wired Nest doorbells (as well as wired Ring doorbells) are great products. HOWEVER, they don't tell you upfront that these wired doorbells all have an internal non-user-serviceable battery. IF you will be using the doorbell with a mechanical chime, just be aware that at some point, the battery inside will fail.
The internal battery on these units are used to provide temporary voltage to the doorbell unit when a mechanical chime is used. When someone presses the doorbell button, power is temporarily routed away from the doorbell to the chime inside the house. The battery keeps the doorbell powered for the 1-2 seconds while this happens. Over time, this small battery will be unable to deal with the voltage drop and your doorbell will lose power and reboot itself. If you don't rely on a mechanical chime or if you use the Ring wireless chime, than it won't be an issue. If you do use a mechanical chime, depending on your environment (which includes usage rate, weather, temperature, etc.), the doorbell will stop function properly at some point in time. For most users, it seems to be somewhere between 1-3 years.
