  • After getting all excited for the upcoming Genesis Atlantic 75 series titles coming our way, I decided to revisit Genesis Seconds Out, the live album from the 1977 World Tour for the Wind and Wuthering album. Genesis Seconds Out was recorded in Paris, with the bulk of the album done on that tour and one cut taken from the Trick of the Tail tour of the previous year. Seconds Out features material from Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Trick of the Tail, and Wind and Wuthering. It is also the last album to feature lead guitarist Steve Hackett.
The edition under review is the Abbey Road Half Speed Remaster which features the Nick Davis remix of the original album.
    The band consisted of:
    Tony Banks
    Mike Rutherford
    Phil Collins
    Steve Hackett
Seconds Out features the addition of Chester Thompson on drums, with one track, The Cinema Show featuring Bill Bruford

As a teenager in the 80s, I knew Genesis from their pop hits from their then recent albums, but I knew they had a deeper past. Seconds Out was my gateway to the songs of the Hackett/Gabriel era and once I bought this, I collected all albums that came before it. Life-changing for sure.

    • @ThePressingMatters

Absolutely. I guess this was my gateway too, though it was happening in real time, so the pop era hadn't started yet.

The beauty of I Know What I Like from this concert and on any following Genesis tour is the Stagnation part from Trespass. Stagnation is one of my favorites songs of all time. I saw Genesis on the 2007 tour and recently on the final 2021 tour...both times they played I Know What I Like with the Stagnation part....that was amazing and will never forget.

Thank you for bringing that up because I forgot to! Yes, a nice nod to Trespass which is otherwise not represented on this set. Awesome you got to see them a few times and that they were still doing this song

Glad to see someone as excited about this album as I am. The first Genesis album I ever heard was A Trick of the Tail, then Wind and Wuthering, etc. So I was introduced to Collins on vocals first, and to this day I prefer his versions of even the early stuff. He was such a powerful singer for such a little guy. My first concert experience with Genesis was in August of 1980. I was 18. They had finished a European leg of a tour and they came to the U.S. for part two. They scheduled their first show at a little 10,000 seat venue in Peoria, IL, the Peoria Civic Center. Wasn't unusual for bands to start a tour in a less obvious place....try out the effects and try out a song set list to see how the audience would respond. Luckily, they played Suppers Ready - I was thrilled!! (They stopped playing it on much of the remainder of the tour - so I was fortunate!!). And, of course, they ended the show with Los Endos....it was as if a freight train moved through the arena. And Phil hopped off the drum platform, gave his famous thumbs up to the crowd as they walked off stage, and I knew I had just witnessed something that - quite frankly - no other band in the world could do. So powerful and perfect. Still my all time favorite band, and Phil is still my all time favorite vocal performer. Thanks for your sharing your passion. I've watched a few of your other videos so far, and you have a new subscriber.

Awesome to have you here, and sharing this vivid memory. I remember one of the shows in which Afterglow was performed. It was so powerful and moving I had to hold back my tears, as I was with some friends and I didn't want to feel embarrassed. Phil may have well been ascending to heaven. It was that impressive! I saw 100s of concerts in my teens and never was more excited than seeing Genesis.

A superb live album. My favourite live album along with Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous. I also saw that tour back then in 1977, it was great to see Steve do this in its entirety on his tour, and fair play to Steve for keeping the real spirit of Genesis music alive. Nice vid man.

Thanks for revisiting this album - one of my favourite Genesis albums and easily my favourite live album. I discovered Genesis around Trick of the Tail but didn’t catch them live until Duke but I still have the emotional response to this one. Recent subscriber, here. I listened to this album a couple of days ago, so the timing of your video is cool. I actually listen to it 2 or 3 times a year. I love it. This version of "Supper's Ready" is my favorite. Collins does an amazing job on vocals and the final section, which you mentioned, is utterly transcendent. The whole album is great from start to finish and it's rightfully considered one of the best live albums, ever!

So cool that you have it fresh in your mind while you're hearing my comments about each section. I'm sure you can tell I get a bit emotional when I hear this. I wonder if other people react as I do. I had tears of joy in my eyes at several points throughout. The music they have created just does this to me. I don't know if it's the intricate melodies, striking chord changes, moving lyrics, stunning virtuosity or what, but it's like nothing else.

My experience of this release (Abbey Road) was emotionally charged as yours. I bought the OG on the day of its release, and have always loved it, but this new version had me in bits. I get misty-eyed just thinking about it. It's incredible.
I saw both the Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering tours (three times on the latter, two when I was front row, centre) and they have been milestones in my life. 'Trick' in Glasgow in '76 especially.
However, I've always had a deep reservation with this album. The sequencing is all to hell. 'Afterglow' comes too early, 'I Know What I Like' and 'The Lamb/Musical Box' were the encores, dammit, and should have been on side four, closing the album. By the way, during 'I Know What I Like' when the crowd were laughing and cheering, it was when Phil was throwing and catching his tambourine. It was his party-piece.
A couple of years ago I did a Genesis 'Worst to Best' video and it's on my channel. 100k views so far, which is insane!

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  8 місяців тому +1

Hi thanks for your great comments! Now that you mention it, the sequencing is a bit wonky. I don't recall the exact orders of songs from the shows I saw. But what you propose makes sense. Wouldn't it be nice to have an expanded set in complete chronological order. You also reminded me of the Phil goofing off with the tambourine bit.
Still this album provokes deep emotions for those who experienced these songs live. Thanks for sharing how it affected you!
Congrats on the huge views for your video. I'll search it out and add another view for you :-)

How are you feeling about The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway? I'm going to be reviewing the new 45 but my listen last night had me realizing it's got a lot of tracks that are not up to their best, particularly the last side. Such an odd way to close an album.

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826 8 місяців тому +1

@@ThePressingMatters When I did my rundown of Genesis albums, although it was a close-run thing, I plumped for TLLDOB as my number one, mainly because it still offered surprises after almost fifty years. I acknowledge that it has a little too much filler, but can appreciate that even those musical interludes were there to serve the concept.
I'd be keen to hear the new 45 version, but after checking the prices of SEBTP (following your review), these albums are too expensive and tricky to easily get hold of in the UK for me to take the plunge. TLLDOB is £150 upwards (plus shipping) - ouch!
I think I'm generally circumspect about chasing optimum pressings because (for me) the listening experience has as much to do about the listening room, the kit on which its played, and most importantly, how much concentration one brings to a listening session. There's no point in having the best pressing in existence is, at the same time as playing it, one is vacuuming the carpet or checking one's mobile phone.
If someone would like me to review the 45 rpm releases for UA-cam, please send me copies. I'll even return them afterwards! 😄

That last part about vacuuming had me laughing :-)
I think that my recent listen could be a good angle to come from if the 45 does in fact keep me riveted from start to finish. Sometimes a sonic jump can have that affect on me and on my appreciation for each moment of the music.

There will never be an alternative better than the otiginal release and original band, but Steve Hackett's band has three Live multi-LP releases out that are simply outstanding! Thanks for this Scott. This album brings back some great memories for me. Genesis on the W&W tour was my first concert (2nd being Pink Floyd on the Animals tour) & not much has come close to those 2 gigs since. I still have my ticket & program & I can remember queuing up for 6 hours on a freezing cold & wet day in Manchester UK to get tickets. IMO Seconds Out is the last great Genesis album. Yes they produced some good music after this and although the Gabriel era will always be my favourite, Hackett leaving was a bigger miss. As you rightly say though the inclusion of only one track from W&W was a mistake. As I recall, the only 2 tracks from that album they didn’t play were Wot Gorilla & Blood on the Rooftops. Agree again that this album has to be played loud but will stick with my OG UK pressing as it sounds good enough to me. Keep up the great content.

Beautiful review Scott! this is exactly how I felt when I heard it back in 1978, and then I was at the 1979 tour in Europe, I saw them twice in December in Paris,it was magical, I still remember vividly these concerts to this day. I love Peter Gabriel, but Phil Collins did a great job taking over from him the vocals and the presence, I did't miss him in this concert.
Your channel is probably the most genuine when it comes to discussing music, Many thanks again.
    Greetings from France!

      Hi Ali
Thank you for your kind words regarding the channel! This video was a joy to make, and to hear this again on my updated system was like a time machine! Every emotion was intact and came flooding back into my consciousness. I never once felt sad that it wasn't Gabriel up there. I too love Gabriel, and was happy to see him on the Security and So tours. I do love watching the old clips of Gabriel in costume. Have you seen the Midnight Special clips? They restored Watcher of the Skies and one other performance and the look spectacular.

@@ThePressingMatters many thanks for taking the time to reply. yes I discovered Midnight Special recently, I watched many of my favorite bands in concert, I always try to find old clips of PG with his costumes and makeup, he has such a presence on stage, he attracts your full attention, I also saw him on the Security tour back in 1982 in Ann Arbor, MI, during my college years, unforgettable like Nat King Cole use to sing it!!

@@ThePressingMatters Yes he did! they started with "the rhythm of the heat" with all the percussion and the climax at the end, impressive...

Seconds Out is the best Genesis album even because this record is among the Gabriel era and the Collins era and the arrangements of the Gabriel era are more modern and less baroque...only flaw on this masterpiece is the lack of the piano intro of Firth of Fifth. After Seconds Out my choices for the other best Genesis albums are : Trick or Tail....The Lamb and Duke.

You're absolutely on point about this balancing the two eras perfectly and giving the older material a fresh approach that still remains timeless. I want to believe that the piano into was played in concert but I can't recall personally. Perhaps it was edited out for fear of turning off new audiences with its heavily 'classical' rather than rock feel. I agree with all your choices for best, but might add Selling England By The Pound for the full Fifth of Firth, and Cimema Show.

On this record, it is Thompson except for The Cinema Show which is Bruford, as that track was a year earlier .

Wasn’t Hacketts Guitar mixed rather low on this album.

I've heard that story, perhaps it was on the original. This is a remix and I don't feel like it's lacking presence in any way. The famous solos and embellishments are there to hear in all their glory!
