    "The Lamb Lies Down on" is the sixth studio album by the British progressive rock band Genesis, released in 1974. It is concept album that tells the story of Rael, a Puerto Rican youth living in New York City. The album follows Rael's surreal journey through various encounters and challenges, exploring themes of self-discovery, identity, and existentialism.
    Musically, "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" showcases Genesis' intricate and complex songwriting style, blending elements of progressive rock, art rock, and even some pop sensibilities. The album features a wide range of instruments, including keyboards, guitars, bass, drums, and a variety of synthesizers.
    Peter Gabriel's distinctive vocals and storytelling abilities shine throughout the album, as he brings to life the various characters and emotions presented in the concept. The band's musicianship is also impressive, with intricate and often unpredictable instrumental sections that add to the album's overall atmosphere.
    "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is widely regarded as one of Genesis' most ambitious and influential works. It received favorable reviews upon its release and has since become a cult classic among progressive rock fans. The album's rich storytelling and musical complexity make it a rewarding listening experience for those interested in exploring the genre.

    This was a super helpful summary as the Lamb is probably in my Top 5 albums ever. When I met Steve Hackett 5 years ago, I asked him what his favorite track on the album was. He surprised me by stating "Fly On The Windshield" and especially Tony Banks' work on the section you described in the review haha. It's now one of my favorie tracks. I'm wondering how intense "The Waiting Room" will sound on this pressing?? Can't wait to hear. Great video bud!

      Thank you Brennan! Funny I did have a comment about The Waiting Room but some things were edited out for time reasons. I said that I had heard it in a new way and discovered things within it I hadn't noticed before. It rose in my estimation on this pressing. Fly On A Windshield is a thrill to hear, and it must be to play on as well. Both Tony and Steve have commented on it being one of the greatest moments on the album. If it's a top album for you, you'll definitely want to hear this pressing. It's up there with the best.

    Oops, sorry for my punctuated chat entries, I should have been writing here in the comments....
    I was trying to say that one of your videos a few months ago got me to pay close attention to Genesis.
    It was when Chad announced the Atlantic 75 series. You did a video about some noteworthy Genesis albums that Chad said would be part of this series. After that video, I streamed Lamb, Trick of the Tail, and Selling England, via Qobuz and a hi-fit network streamer connected to my main system. I turned off my phone and really listened to these records, in their entirety, for the first time. (on separate days)
    One of the greatest things is when you discover an amazing record that has been around for years that had slid under your radar. That was my experience with these three titles.
    So I pre-ordered them from Acoustic Sounds and I've now received Selling England and Lamb, and I'm thrilled to own these amazing sounding versions of this fantastic music.
    Today's video in particular was really educational for me. I really appreciate your attention to detail, and the balance of your comments about SQ, the music itself, and the packaging. (Hey, the packaging is part of the tactile experience of owning vinyl. It's not the most important thing, but gorgeous, thoughtful, creative, impressive packaging is part of the appeal of vinyl and elevates the experience of a record for me.)
    Anyway, thanks for another well thought out and super informative and fun video.
    Ron

      Hi Ron,
      I think you've chosen your first picks well. These records are such a treat that I NEVER thought I'd see in my lifetime. I dreamed about this happening somehow and I'm very pleased it's with this series. These are wonderful and the price is right. So glad these are not expensive UHQRs.
      I'll report the news on the next two coming up in April.
      Thanks for your comments and have a wonderful holiday!

    Thanks Scott! I couldn’t agree more on your two points: 1). The Classic 33 is a bit “bass heavy” which IMO applies also to Classic’s other reissues of the Genesis/PG albums. 2). “Small bites” - the lengthy album in better sounding AND in 45, I’ve discovered a lot more musical details in the recording/ production that I missed through the years playing this iconic album. Bravo!

      It is incredible how this reveals texture, layers and detail that draw you in and give you an appreciation of the intent of the composition I really enjoyed hearing what I thought was one keyboard or synth only to discover exquisite layering. Same in the bass, drums and guitars. I could have said more about all their contributions, but I gotta say Phil is at the top of his game here.

      Thanks! I hope people like it. It was frustrating to do - there's so much that can be said about this, and it's difficult to condense it to a reasonable length. I had to discard the track by track breakdown, the storyline and focus on some personal highlights, packaging and basic sound comparison.

    I am excited to experience this new recording. I have always thought musically the album was the pinnacle of the band. Your comments only reinforce my anticipation. 'Hairless Heart' has been one of my favorites and it is one of the lyrical hinge pins. The re-mix on the CD I hate and nearly purchased a German recording. Glad I waited. Love the bass on this album. Phil is spectacular.
    As I've grown older I find my perception of its length has shortened, although listening to its entirety is still a commitment. Can't wait to put this on the turntable after your comment.
    Yes, the lyrics are a challenge and would take more than one video to do it justice. Peter has subtly put a lot of related ideas into his story. As The New Yorker reviewer from 2014 said the album is "The 'Ulysses' of Concept Albums". The word 'dense' comes to mind. Sorry you are uninterested in my essay. If you like Genesis I highly recommend Richard Macphail's book "My Book of Genesis". It is not long, but filled with interesting and detailed accounts of the early years of the band. The guy is smart and his story is fascinating. A real 'hippie' with his own adventures woven in.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  6 місяців тому

      Awesome comments is never heard about the New Yorker comment and it's spot on. It's epic. dense and reveals more each time. I think with this release I will be immersing myself deeper into the world of the Lamb. It's just incredible what they got out of it this time!

      @@ThePressingMatters I may just email you a PDF copy of my Lamb essay 'Nightmare or Nirvana'. It has some background information on the band and the writing of the album which you will probably already know, but from there I go through each scene and explain my take, how they combine for a total message. It sounds tedious but is not. The conclusions, however, are simply my opinions. Since the author of 'My Book of Genesis' is still in contact with Gabriel, I am planning on writing him to see if he can give suggestions on the best way of getting a copy to him. I'd love to get Peter's comments, but would not expect he has the time.

    Scott I really love your shows. I reviewed all my UK (all Porky's), US on ATCO (all Porky's too) and German copies including the Classic Record. I owe a bunch of other European copies as well and a Canadian, but they can be left out of the equation.
    So, for the US, I owe a promotional copy and two Monarch pressing (MO suffix on label). However, they sound quite dull in comparison to the superior UK "Porky x Johnnie" / "Pecko" / "Pecko" / "Porky" (2U/2U/2U/2U). Yes I know, the one with the terrible hum on both sides one and two (it’s even on the 1st gen CD!) and the (alleged) skip on Back in NYC. Anyway (what a coincidence) the 1st UK blows everything out of the water I’ve got so far in all respects. It’s really no comparison.
    Now I was informed long time ago that they ordered a recall back then, because of that skip and they also obviously addressed the hum. So they did a recut for side 2 ("Pecko" 3U). One can tell by the narrower runout section. It’s clearly another cut. However, I owe three 2U copies (the 2U was the very first cut), but just one copy actually skips on track one of side two. So, perhaps not all, or even just a minority have that infamous skip. Maybe they did the recall because of the hum after all. Who knows...
    To wrap things up. For the remaining copies I have: the UK 2U/3U/2U/2U, has obviously no skips and no hum on both sides but sounds just a little bit less sparkling to me; the later "Porky's Prime Cut" sound quite good; the German is quite good too, but that's only for side 1. The Classic Record sound similar to the US copies I have: also dull (just as all my CRs for the Genesis catalogue) but at least it's clean and silent. That brings me to my final conclusion. I'd say, try to score a UK "Porky x Johnnie" (2U/2U/2U/2U) without the skip but WITH the hum (there is no way around unfortunately) which - lets be honest - is blown away by archangel Gabriel. I at least will pass on, on the Atlantic 75 Anny. There is no doubt in my mind that It betters the Classic Record, as you said, but if it does better the 1st UK, remains to be seen…
    Btw I saw another reviewer on YT that preferred the US ATCO Porky in some ways (Gabriels voice) over the Atlantic 75 release. That was an interesting observation. Just saying…

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  6 місяців тому

      Great observations, thank you! I was hoping we'd get some insight from someone who had UK pressings of various pedigree and here we are. I'm pretty sensitive to noise (and hum!) so being in the US, I'm not sure I'd go down the path of finding a clean copy of your favorite. It could get very expensive! On the flip side I know the Atlantic would be expensive for you to try as well. (assuming you are in the UK?)
      As with all these shootouts, I have to work with what I have (or have access to) and in this case none of my associates had a UK of this title. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and want to thank you for shedding some light on the various pressings I did not get to hear.

    Another excellent review Scott, thanks. This is my favourite Genesis album and my OG UK copy has been played to death so this is a must buy for me. The innermost tracks have always suffered sound wise as it’s such a long album, so this new 45rpm issue hopefully remedies that problem. The 45rpm SEBTP was a real triumph IMO, so much so that I will probably never play my OG or the SACD again. Let’s hope Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot maintain the high standard which has been set so far.

    • @ThePressingMatters

      I think you'll find the ending tracks benefit from the 45. There's no inner groove distortion at all naturally. It's spacious and doesn't lose fidelity anywwhere. Selling England was incredible and this maintains the standard given the somewhat different engineering style. Fingers crossed they keep it up!

    I think the fatal flaw with the Nick Davis and Tony Banks CD's is that they just did not have the perspective of a third-party audiophile engineer/producer and fell overly in love with 5:1 surround. I'm glad the G-men sold their catalog so that true professionals of audio mastering and labels like Acoustic Sounds were able to get the license to do them properly. I just wish Wind and And then there were three were also on the list, but I bet you someone else will come along and give those a similar treatment. #2channelforever

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  6 місяців тому

      Now that you mention it I believe you're correct about the main writer for Hairless Heart. He and Tony made it into a mini masterpiece.
      I have to say I have not heard the remixes on vinyl. Just in the compressed crappy resolution of Spotify. So please don't take that comment as an absolute opinion. I've heard that the vinyl is less compressed than the CD, and the CD better than low res streaming.
      I'm sure there's something worthwhile there but it wasn't apparent on streaming.
      It comes across as clearer but less dynamic, like everything is loud and subtleties lost. Vocals had a pushed out quality. I think this might sound more contemporary when in a playlist, where the original mixes would sound off against other more modern music.

I did a recent test a couple of weeks ago and my favourite is the Italian...very close to the Austria or UK. I like the Classic but I found the voice not as present as in the original europeans which is the typical sound of Genesis Peter Gabriel era albums. I think you made some excellent and cogent points. I can't really argue with your evaluation of this release, however unless you are a diehard Genesis fan (guilty as charged) I don't know if this is so much better than some of the other available releases to justify the price. I have two 1974 Porky pressings (one SP and one PR) and I can't really notice a vast improvement. More bass and punch is found in the old pressings and the high end is a bit tamer. I found the new pressing to almost too bright in places. I might chalk that up to my system, but my 74 copies did not have this same issue.
    I suppose I was hoping for a more dramatic improvement over my older copies. Am I sorry I purchased this, definitely not. But would I recommend this as the definitive copy of this LP, probably not because of the price. Excellent review. 👽✌️

    I also have the Classic Records 33rpm of Selling England and bought the 45rpm, following your video on it; I am not disappointed, it is phenomenal.
    This one is a bit of a monster though. I haven’t yet justified it to myself 😬
    I’ll need to mull it over… 🤔

      @preservedmoose it is worth the $70 extra. and buying it from the local store is more secure than doing the import oneself from the US. with the VAT and custom, freight expense, getting it from the store is the best way. And if there are problems just go back your local store. It is worth the $70 extra (upon the $120 US price).

    My thoughts: 1) I love the packaging as much as you did, although I had to go out and purchase 1 1/4" wide outer sleeves to accommodate it. 2) The mid-range is much clearer for sure and you can really hear the textures on the Eno-treated vocals, not to mention instrument separation throughout and all the weird sounds as well. 3) I agree, quieter than the Classic but better because of it. Controlled bass indeed. 3) I might love this album more than you because I"m a sucker for the concept records of yesteryear. I believe the instrumental pieces in between certain tracks were designed to give Peter time to change his costumes on stage. I can imagine that live, those pieces would seem much stronger or create a certain mood leading up to the next song. It must've been spine-tingling, to say the least. Side note: I'm hoping to see the Musical Box do the Lamb someday, their SEBTP show was/is unbelievably good. 4) did the weight of the vinyl seem less than 180g to you or is that just my imagination? Thank you Scott for yet another well-made video, your insights and observations are spot on.

      Thank you for your thoughts on this. There's so much I couldn't fit it to this video I would have liked to elaborate on. The big numbers are fantastic as well but these instrumental interludes are even more interesting now. A nice break that was as you say, necessary to accommodate the costume changes. I can only imagine when Peter came out on Slipperman! I'd love to see the musical box perform this, or anything for that matter. Glad they are still out there keeping it alive!

      I just last month saw The Musical Box for the first time. Amazing show (though the 'booming' bass was very distracting). They made me realize how avant-garde this band was.
      I was extremely disappointed (I misread the promo material) that they were not doing The Lamb production, nor even a song from the album.
      It is my understanding that they did the entire Lamb production last year and said they would never do it again. Ugh. With the 50th anniversary of the album's release next year, I was hoping they would re-stage it. Perhaps we should start a letter-writing (or email, or something else) campaign? I would eagerly anticipate such a concert.

      thanks for the report on TMB! I can explain, it's not a greatest-hits show. To keep with integrity and authenticity, The Musical Box recreates the actual tours with the exact setlists and encores. They've performed the historic following tours, 72 Foxtrot, 73 SEBTP, the 74 SEBTP Canadian tour version called the "black show" with updated costumes and a bit different setlist, and finally the Lamb. If they did the 71 Nursery Cryme tour I'm not aware of it. It's like going back into a time machine! in 2024, they will be continuing the show you just witnessed, the 50th Anniversary of the 73-74 tour. Later in 74, the Lamb tour started in the US so hopefully we will see the Lamb tour happen again. They usually rotate them every few years. @@rk41gator

    Similarly with me, it’s not an album (CD version) I play all the way through very often. Having said that, the same applies to The Wall (Floyd) and one or two other doubles I have. Carpet Crawlers is up there among my favourite Genesis tracks and would also feature high up on my list of favourite all artists recordings, but overall, it’s one I don’t like anywhere near as much as Selling Rngland, for example.

      There's always been something about this album that holds me at a distance. I enjoy much of it, but you can almost sense the tension within the band creating it. Add to that a story and lyrics that can get quite disturbing - well I appreciate it rather than enjoy it as a whole. The two albums which surround it are my favorites.
      It is rather like The Wall to me - great highlights, but odd story and disturbing lyrics as well as a sense of internal tension take it down a notch.
      As I said I'm not big on concept albums :-)

I’d been well aware of the band since the 70s but it’s taken this long for me to even see an album of theirs, let alone buy one. This one (Photos Of Ghosts) is in super condition and I’m really liking my first taste of Italian prog. I got my copy of the lamb on Vinyl by Acoustic Sounds. I do not have a turntable to hear it and never will get one. I like cd's a lot better even though you don't hear the drums and guitar like vinyl. I thought Nick Davis remix of the lamb was superb on Hybrid-Sacd Dsd remastering as long as you do not have the volume to loud. the DvD-Audio had to much open space which i did not like. The colony of Slipperman the rip sound was taken out of the remix, The grand Parade the vocals drown out the background sound. which was minor. If Nick Davis kept the rip sound in the colony i would not have to buy another copy of this. I also have the the original AAD of the lamb on cd Japan mini Lp 1998 or 99 and it sounds great but not superb like the super audio cd . I think sound systems have different effects on your hearing experience also. i have my treble set on plus 2 and my bass on plus 4,

    Ill stick with my Classic I think. And I think moving forward until Trick we will start to see less jumps in improvements over the 33s as mentioned because Foxtrot and Cryme just arnt recorded or mixed that great for a lot of tracks. Ive yet to compare my SEbtP 45 as well but I about to.

      Leon, I think Foxtrot and Cryme ain't that badly recorded, there are just too many bad masterings and pressings of them out there. I find the 2007 remix on SACD great on these. The snare actually sounds like a snare and not like a kettle pot like on many pressings. I think the 45RPM's of these will be a huge improvement when coming directly from the analogue tapes.

    Thanks for the review Scott. This is my fav Genesis album BUT I am really not a fan of the 45rpm format, primarily due to cost and laziness, the constant changing of sides, etc.
    However, your review seems to indicate that my issues with the 45rpm format might be more tolerable with this release? I am waiting for the SACD primarily as I think that should sound really great too, and you get to listen pretty much to the whole production without too much interruption. @@ThePressingMatters Sorry for asking again: do you have to be subscribed to Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions to get the numbered ones? I'm in Europe hence the question.
      I have Lamb in order and wish it ships numbered to the store that carries AP titles here. Both Selling England I got came unnumbered but with different matrix's (from the same local store) - which is very odd and meaning there is no difference between numbered/unnumbered. Maybe they had FC6060 left and put it in an unnumbered album cover. The other variant had the APA matrix which should be the "unnumbered"-one.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  6 місяців тому

      @rabarebra I'm pretty sure the numbered ones are going to come directly from Acoustic Sounds, unless it's a particularly slow seller. Probably Europe and the rest of the world's distributors will be getting unnumbered. I know it's nice to have a numbered copy but assuming it's pressed at QRP (later on possibly by RTI) you are getting the same record.
      Now Selling England has the issue of matrix variations. It's frustrating. Original pressings had side two taken from a new cut, with the rest being Classic plates. Now it's reported there are some side four recuts. I've heard of some variations even among those. Why they didn't recut the whole record to begin with is a mystery. Cost cutting? Not sure, and there doesn't seem to be a consensus yet if the new sides are better or worse than Classics original plates.
