Darkside C7 If Cleetus would have me, sounds fantastic. VINWiki has been a real good thing, too. I just did a big Hypercar Invitational Car Story with Ed. And more Hypercar to come.
As many Civic and WRX guys will tell you, most of rev hang is due to the ECU tuning that happens further upstream from the throttle pedal and a heavy flywheel. A lighter single mass flywheel definitely helped on my GTI. I am very glad you chose this car, because I am a fan of the turbo 4 variants of muscle cars for its lighter weight. Too bad they will forever live in the shadow of their V8 big brothers. I hope to see more of the Camaro!
My focus st used to have rev hang, but once I got a Ford Performance tune it got rid of rev hang and gave it better throttle response. Maybe a tune is all you need.
Driftbricker Andy Thx a mill, DBA Having a great time. I hope our public likes it. This throttle mapper makes the car feel massively powerful for a moment in sport plus. Good for turbo lag in upper gears, just whacks it open.
Driftbricker Andy I’m diggin’ your Volvo-lover stickers. Creative and clever. How bout this idea? “Volvlove” You’re welcome. Your Hearse sticker is perfect for my Black Brick Wagon, it’s an Overtaker! Haha
Randy, I would say your best bet is a custom tune to help reduce that rev hang. So many new 4 cylinder manuals have it so bad. Sorry, didn’t read all the comments. Love your channel! Hope to meet you at a HPDE event one day, which means I gotta go more than once a year!!
As a 1le owner, you owning one further solidifies how great of a car that is. Ive watched your 2016 motortrend bdc ss 1le video a million times. It further convinced me to purchase the car. I need your line at Chuckwalla!
ZZP Performance offers an ECU reflash using HP tuners for Cadillac ATS with the same engine that corrects the rev hang issue. Sounds like the solution.
Hey Randy, good to see you posting fresh content on the channel. The pedal commander won't let off the "reported pedal position" any faster than the "actual pedal position". Even the engine controller/computer will never try to cause a delay in the reported pedal position when it's being let off, since that can lead to unintended acceleration (something that the driver did not wish for). In throttle by wire applications, there's a gazillion calculations happening in between the pedal and the throttle body, so trying to change things at the pedal (source) won't help change much except for tip-in response (no increase in max power though). What you're trying to do with the engine can only be accomplished with an engine tune. The revs might be hanging due to multiple reasons like turbo protection, emissions, etc.
The Pedal Commander only speeds up throttle input. It does nothing when you let off the throttle. The problem you're experiencing is called "rev-hang". It's a "feature" in lots of cars of late. Apparently, it is there to help those who are gear change challenged to perform a smoother shift while also helping out fuel economy by smoothing out throttle inputs. You will need to get an ECU tune to get rid of that "feature". You can also have the tuner tailor the throttle feel to your needs.
Yessir, thanks, Mark. I don';t want to lose my warranty, tho. May be stuck. Pedal Commander took a shot at it, no change I can tell off-throttle. Reduces turbo lag on, and is very sporting in feel. Perfect if you want faster throttle response. It's not smoother tho, because the clutch has to drag the engine revs down for the next gear, and hard on transmission synchros.
The problem as I see it is this just interferes with the throttle signal, so all this can do is tell the computer you are at say 30% throttle when you are really at 15%. So it makes the car feel quicker at low throttle, and allows more mid-throttle tuning. But when you let off the throttle it's at 0% already, so the throttle mapper can't go below that. So this can't fix the throttle hang...only a computer tune change can do that, because it's probably keeping the throttle cracked a bit until it reaches idle.
I’m betting it’s in the ECU (throttle hang), however seems like you know this already, but here’s a +1 to not flashing your ECU until you are out of warranty. I worked at a dealership for a different manufacturer and they would reject warranty claims when they saw low ignition counts, showing that the ECU was flashed to aftermarket and then back to OEM.
I drove my Dad's 2005 XRS. I was blown away how fast I could shift. I get back into my 2013 Honda fit. My god the Rev hang. It makes it very difficult to drive, there's such a narrow window to get a smooth shift
I've got the Soler Performance Throttle Controller in my 2.0T Camaro and it's incredible. It does everything you describe in your video. There are throttle tables in the ECU you can tune. Not sure what kind of impact it would have solving the throttle hang issue though. I had a lighter flywheel in my RX-7 and it had the best feeling revs with zero throttle hang. The revs came off quicker then they came on. I wish I could get this car close to that.
Call JST Performance bud. Had this same issue with my ‘17 Focus ST and an aftermarket engine tune was able to remove the Rev hang using a Cobb Accessport and tune files from JST. JST owns and races a new Camaro so they’re already hard at work developing tunes and parts for the platform. The tune significantly increased performance of course but most surprisingly it improved my gas mileage in daily driving by a few mpg, even with the rev hang removed. (Another bonus was options for launch control, flat foot shifting, and eco/race maps for the boost and throttle sensitivity.) Funny story, I went to the dealership and had my accelerator pedal replaced under warranty before a Toyota mechanic told me the rev hang was part of the emissions strategy of the engine tune. I’m definitely going with a Camaro or the rumored GR Toyota hatch next just so I don’t have to deal with Ford mechanics anymore haha.
Randy Pobst dealerships are allowed to screw us in many ways but luckily the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 protects the consumer in this situation. Congress ruled that no part installed can blanket void a warranty. Instead warranty coverage is determined on a claim by claim basis and the dealership has to prove, with evidence, that the aftermarket part directly caused the failure. In the case of the tune, if your engine blew then yes the dealership would likely claim that your tune caused it and you would have to fight that in court if you felt it doesn’t. But if your air conditioner stopped working or any number of other unrelated defects occurred on your vehicle then they would have to cover it under the terms of your warranty. However, you have two other things safeguarding you if you tune your Camaro. First off, you can just flash the car ECU back to stock (takes 30 seconds) before you brought it to the dealership for service. Second, GM gave all the 1LEs an unprecedented Track Day warranty, so failures that happen while driving on a track are still covered. So long story short, your pedal commander is more likely to give you issues getting a blown engine warrantied since you’ve advertised the install on UA-cam. With a proper ECU tune, done off camera, you have very little to worry about. Just make sure to choose a tuner that is trusted and respected in the community and you should be just fine brother. Hope this helps. I love answering this question btw. We so very rarely get any say in how dealerships treat us as car enthusiasts. The 1975 United States Congress must have had a handful of fellow forward-thinking car enthusiasts looking out for the rest of us!
May be a function of manufacturers chasing lower and lower parasitic drag in engines. Less friction and drag means longer ‘hang’ times. The bonus of low parasitic drag is more horsepower and efficiency.
J B Perhaps, but I don’t think so. I think it’s emissions, avoiding high vacuum, and/or mileage, avoiding the drag that vacuum creates - engine braking. Most late-model cars are like that. They don’t slow down. It’s called “sailing” by some manufacturers.
I have been considering this for my WRX. But I want to use city and desensitize the pedal for when I have my dog in the car. He's not a fan of launches. So to make it smoother for him. But a pro tune can also do the same thing. I'm afraid of a Cobb accesport breaking my engine. Plus in Canada the Pedal Commander is over 400 bucks. So I'm afraid of the money also. Thanks for your video Randy. A racing driver is just the person to follow for this kind of stuff.
I think the computer controlled throttle body isn't closing as fast as you want it to, even though the signal to it through the pedal commander is faster.
If you want to get rid of that hang, you need to lighten the flywheel like you said. That was the only solve for rev hang on my old Mazda6 with an electric throttle body. The rev hang was terrible until the lightweight flywheel. But that brought on a whole new set of problems with much added gear noise from the single mass aftermarket flywheel/clutch in neutral getting louder over time which was concerning.
Thanks Randy, ive got a '14 ATS 6MT that id like to have fix that rev hang and more direct feel for rev-matching on down shifts. 2.5L throttlebody is also an option, slightly larger and gives a more direct feel, just need an A/M cold side charge pipe to mate up to it.
Love the videos! I'm 99% sure the problem is in the actual ECU. I'm not sure about the 2019, but I've used HPtuners to make the electronic throttle in my 2003 Z06 act like a mechanical throttle. Oh and the purpose is to make the car "smoother" I don't remember where I read that but that was the engineers reasoning. People tend to let off too abruptly when driving a stick.
I concur with several of the folks on here: Have an HP Tune put on the car if the 2019 ECM will accept it. See if this addresses the issue on the software end. It will add tons of horsepower and torque (as a bonus). Beyond that (if the issue remains), you’ll need to look into a single mass flywheel. Most modern 4-6 cylinder motors come with a heavy dual mass unit because it makes driving in traffic a breeze (from stops), and it dampens bad shifts from people who don’t know how to manage the gas and clutch during shifts. Definitely the opposite end of what a career racer seeks! Regardless, I hope you get it sorted, and keep us Pobsted! ❤️👍☺️
I put a racing clutch and flywheel in my WRX and the engine rpm drops like a rock! Down side was less launch torque put was great on track once you got use to it
Would love to see more of your Camaro videos, anything you do with it or even just driving thoughts. Such an interesting package, it definitely gets overlooked for the bigger displacement models because of its target demographic.

You might want to try vitesse throttle controller I have no idea if it works for 4 cylinders or not. I have a 2018 ss 1LE have not tried it yet on my car
@@randypobstofficial Alrighty but I did look it up and they do make them for your 1LE. I had one a while back on my v6 and it was a huge difference in throttle response. I don't believe I had the issue with the RPM's either. You've probably seen my 1LE up at road Atlanta or coming by your shop as I live right down the road from Road Atlanta. Thanks for the video I'm going to check my Rpm's as I don't recall the same on the V8 version. Love your channel
Awesome Video!! Still having trouble believing that this channel hasn't blown up yet!! I drive a 9th gen civic SI and the rev hang issue is truly bothersome.... could you, however, comment on whether the v6 is any better with respect to this issue?
I have a 3 cylinder 1.0 fiesta. The rev hang is infuriating. In fact, the revs actually jump by about 100rpm worsening its effect. If I got a short shift kit I'd be waiting even longer, so won't waste my cash
Hi Randy, big fan will definitely follow this series. I had 2 questions, why did pick the 2.0 T over the v6? What’s your take on the 2.0 T 1lE vs the current and upcoming 2022 brz?
But to be fair that dinky little four-cyliner most likely has a pretty heavy flywheel. Manufacturers tend to do that on big, heavy cars with small engines.
Hey Randy, I have a 2018 SS 1LE that I've tracked about a half dozen times already, have you ever tracked the SS 1LE? I like to know the different between the turbo 4 the N/A LT1 V8 and the ZL1/1LE's blown v8 as far as what's the best overall package for track days in your opinion
@@randypobstofficial Thank You Randy, I wanted a Corvette ever since the early 90's and my first car was a 96 Camaro RS M5, when I went to buy my 2018 SS 1LE, it was between that car and a C7 Vette with the Z51 package and I'm glad I picked the SS 1LE. I feel the 6th Gen Camaros pulled even if not surpassed the C7 Corvette in many places for the first time ever and from what I've heard you and others day, the Vette has too much oversteer. I hope you enjoy your turbo 1LE Camaro and I hope to see you around the track some day
@@Cuefortunateson Hi Eric I bought a '16 Camaro SS MT after coming out of a beautiful '14 Stingray C7 AT with the Z51. The Camaros are better built, the Corvette gave me many repair headaches, most of the time the car was at the shop and twice towed. My 5th gen Camaro ZL1 and my 6th gen SS are way better cars. Corvettes are very unreliable. No look back.👍
@@jmm1174 that's the feeling I've got over time that the 6th gen Camaros overall are better cars to live with, drive and track versus the C7 Corvettes hence why I stayed away from the C7s, I hope the higher ICE Trim C8s work out a lot of the problems the C7s had overall
Is this Camaro your personal vehicle? If so do you plan on tuning and modifying it ? I'd love to see some videos of this tuned vs the Ford Ecoboost Stang and the V8 Camaro and mustang.
Randy which do you prefer a ZL1 or the SS1LE for the track? I'm also surprised that nobody dare to compare the SS1LE VS the Shelby GT350. I think that both are very close in performance ✌
RacingfortheChildren If you would like to change the response of you gas pedal, this is the ticket, Enrique. It gets really aggressive in Sport and Sport plus. Makes car feel much more powerful at tip in. Or slow response down in Eco, which might actually make a good trick for controlling your 460 hp in an autocross, or in the rain. It is also widely and precisely adjustable, fun to play with.
This doesn't work like you are hoping. This just introduces an artificial curve to the pedal input; removes linearity. So 25% throttle doesn't equal 25% input. This might make 25% throttle 35% input. You actually lose some of the resolution of the pedal using one of these. Only way to fix it is a tune.
Pedal Commander said they'd try something for the off-throttle, and so far, it still seems the same. I want to get rid of that throttle hang. Maddening on upshifts. Thanks. But if I get a tune, there goes my warranty, right?
@@randypobstofficial It would be interesting if they can do anything, although I personally don't see how they could. The pedal commander just manipulates the pedal input. This is a result of drive by wire and the OEM tune. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the OEM factory tune if we want to keep our warranty. I'm really surprised Chevy didn't tune this out as this is a performance car. I am curious if this also occurs in the V6/V8 versions of this car. I've noticed the severity varies from car model to model; My Mazda 2 had this issue, but I didn't with an ND, nor RX-8. I had to get a tune for my Mazda 2 to fix it.
viet Maybe? Not sure. The Pedal Commander does so great stuff with response ON throttle, but thus far, has not helped OFF throttle. I want those revs to drop to smoothly and quickly match the need of the higher gear. Maybe a tune, but that would void my warranty. Might be worth it however. We only live once. I would enjoy the car more, for sure. Thanks!
@@randypobstofficial The Pedal Commander is changing the output signal by alternating based on your setting. Your throttle mapping for the car is still the same. So the table for the requested torque to RPM in the ECU is still the same. ECU wont be changed for off throttle. Pedal Commander has no saying in what is going on when off throttle. You need the table changed to be linear and not a progressive curve, thus you need a tune of your ECU to achieve the goal you're really looking for.
Pedal commanders are worthless. I used one on my 05 ram 2500 cummins and it just kept the automatic transmission in constant search for a gear. Then It caused a short in the fuel pedal and a check engine light.
Yes it does, switchable, but that is for downshifts. My issue is with UPshifts. Rev hang. On an upshift, the revs need to drop to synch with the higher gear. My Camaro doesn't drop very quickly, possibly for some emissions deal?
Guess what, my Camaro 1LE was the FOUR-cylinder! Why? It was my street car, not for track or racing. The four is much lighter and handles better, and has strong low-end torque, with excellent fuel efficiency, all things I want in my street car. No, I didn't drag race anyone, but I loved driving the car. It's the sports car version of Camaro, esp w 1LE package, it is not a muscle car, and I did not want one for my daily.

Nice having a record of the things that don’t work as planned
You might want to try vitesse throttle controller I have no idea if it works for 4 cylinders or not. I have a 2018 ss 1LE have not tried it yet on my car
ZoutlawSS Ooooh, the big V8. I’m going to talk more with Pedal Commander first. Seems the off-throttle may not be controlled by the e-throttle.
I have the vitesse. It doesn't change off throttle either.
randy, you Rock!!!!
Dude i love your content, you're a great story teller man. Really, im so depressed but you make me happy (dont feel bad I'll be fine)
What you need is a good tune.
Hi Randy!
I always pictured Randy as a Porsche guy
I'm kind of an everything guy. Except SUV's. Unless I'm towing a trailer. Luv towing.
Randy Pobst you’re the man regardless Randy 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome Video!! Still having trouble believing that this channel hasn't blown up yet!! I drive a 9th gen civic SI and the rev hang issue is truly bothersome.... could you, however, comment on whether the v6 is any better with respect to this issue?
I have a 3 cylinder 1.0 fiesta. The rev hang is infuriating. In fact, the revs actually jump by about 100rpm worsening its effect. If I got a short shift kit I'd be waiting even longer, so won't waste my cash
You may have to pcu tune it out!
Don’t forget the no lift shift!
I wonder if this would help make the throttle mapping more linear on the SS. Anyways great video, keep the Camaro content coming!
Does your car not have Auto rev matching? I know a lot of people don't like it but my SS1LE has it
For downshifts, yes, but my issue is with UPshifts. The revs don't drop, making it hard on synchros and unsmooth, and slow shifting.
Randy try the "Banks Pedal Monster"
I'd love to talk to you about running some of my parts on your 1LE and get your opinion on the improvement to the feel of the vehicle. SPL Parts!
The pedal commander is really meant for big V-8 engines it works best
It’s meant for all lmao. It’s a throttle response not engine
Hi Randy, big fan will definitely follow this series.
I had 2 questions, why did pick the 2.0 T over the v6?
What’s your take on the 2.0 T 1lE vs the current and upcoming 2022 brz?
Does the 4 cylinder have active rev match capability like the V8 manual Camaro??
But to be fair that dinky little four-cyliner most likely has a pretty heavy flywheel. Manufacturers tend to do that on big, heavy cars with small engines.
Probably the idle control valve is hanging it up..
Hey Randy,
I have a 2018 SS 1LE that I've tracked about a half dozen times already, have you ever tracked the SS 1LE?
I like to know the different between the turbo 4 the N/A LT1 V8 and the ZL1/1LE's blown v8 as far as what's the best overall package for track days in your opinion
Oh, yes, Eric, and I LOVE it. Perfect balance, great all-round, much better behaved than the unruly C7 vette.
I hope you enjoy your turbo 1LE Camaro and I hope to see you around the track some day
@@Cuefortunateson Hi Eric
I bought a '16 Camaro SS MT after coming out of a beautiful '14 Stingray C7 AT with the Z51.
The Camaros are better built, the Corvette gave me many repair headaches, most of the time the car was at the shop and twice towed. My 5th gen Camaro ZL1 and my 6th gen SS are way better cars. Corvettes are very unreliable. No look back.👍
JM M Did your Vette have engine problems? Or was it other kinds of problems?
Hey Randy! Great video! What do you think about using this on my SS 1LE? Would it make a difference at all? Thanks, your Camaro brother, Enrique.
I feel like the ss doesn’t have a lot of rev hang like the 2.0. And throttle feels pretty responsive already
Is there a spring or cam in the pedal module that can be replaced for quicker return?
@@RalstigRacing Thanks for helpful info, I seem to recall feeling the hang in all 1LE models, and most newer performace cars.
Would a tune fix the issue? heard a lot of people get their WRX tuned for rev hang
viet Maybe?
I feel like the ss doesn’t have rev hang at all ? Am I right?
Pedal commander is the biggest waste of money 💰 EVER! Tune is the way to go!
Hey randy doesnt the car have rev match?
Yes it does, switchable, but that is for downshifts. My issue is with UPshifts. Rev hang. On an upshift, the revs need to drop to synch with the higher gear. My Camaro doesn't drop very quickly, possibly for some emissions deal?
2015 GOLF R.
Couldn't you get some input from a Chevy engineer? You're not exactly an unknown guy. There has to be somebody who knows.
bro i fw your channel randy but the v6 isn’t doing the need my nissan altima is faster
It's the sports car version of Camaro, esp w 1LE package, it is not a muscle car, and I did not want one for my daily.
its got no lift shift dont lift ..................
It’s a tune that’s needed. That thing is a garbage waste of time!!!
Is this Randy Probst Approved? Also I’m interested in knowing why you have a 4 cylinder Camaro I think would be a great video. 👍🏼
