What Makes This Singer Great? Sting
When The Police first came on to the music scene they were like no other band. Led by the superb musicianship of Sting, they really cut their own path by doing their own thing.
Known for the various musical elements he brought to his music, Sting possesses a high, tubular sounding voice that's both smooth and distinct.
A prolific songwriter, Sting has always been known for creating catchy lyrics and melodies that people have really latched onto.
Also a talented bass player, Sting has always hired top notch musicians to play alongside him and has enjoyed a very successful solo career, in addition to his time in The Police.
He has gone on to win 17 Grammy Awards, sold over 100 million records and is one of the world's best-selling artists.
Today I'll go into more detail regarding what I think makes Sting great as we look at one of his live performances. I'd love to hear your thoughts too so please be sure to share what stands out about him for you!

His pitching, his tone, phrasing, melodies, lyrics...just incredible 💙
Thanks, Brett!
What I love about The Police was how super distinctive and unique all 3 of them were- Stewart Copeland's drumming, Andy Summer's guitar playing and Sting's vocals and songwriting.
Definitely!
I've seen Sting perform as a solo artist and on the Police reunion tour. He really is a dynamic force on stage and a great songwriter/musician. His voice is unique and both times I've seen him, I've been amazed by it's range and power.
Awesome! Great to hear that!
For the life of me I can't figure out why nobody has made a movie about Sting's life. Such an interesting dude. Went from being an English and music teacher and coaching soccer to a rock star.
Great idea!
@@kentamplin .Thanks Ken! If they can make a movie about Elton John then why not Sting?
@@Darrell7777 Indeed!
Ken, you already know that Sting is my favourite singer of all time. I think he has one of the most powerful voices of the history of our music and is a great lyricist. I describe him like a "singerstoryteller". I always called him my musician father, because mine died 23 years ago. I try to sing like him, but it is very hard to do so in some songs. A big hug from Spain, Ken!
Hugs back, Juan!
Sting has a style that's all his own. He has a way of hitting high notes without relying so much on any use of falsetto. Other songs that come to mind for me include Wrapped Around Your Finger, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, and Desert Rose as well as his work as an environmentalist because one of his 90s hits, All This Time, was written about the environment.
Thanks for weighing in, Benji!
The Police was one of my fav bands in high school. Great pick !
Glad you enjoyed it, Cristina!
What a legend he is 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Indeed. Thanks, Tyler!
Syncronicity 1 & 2, Driven to tears
Sting is timeless. Such a amazing voice. Even in his interviews when he talks you think man this guy is so cool
Thank you!
@@kentamplin If you can. Please do a reaction of chris cornell's cover of Patience
Awesome video I've listened to Sting since I was a child. Love Outlandos D Amour.
It's so good!
follow this man he is the greatest i learn a lot for my covers
Rock on, Martin!
@ **thank you so much* * Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Sting is a master of arrangement. If you follow his solo concerts you can hear variations of old songs (Police, solo) which are so different from the original - awesome.
Just remember ...all this time! One of the greatest live albums ever! Recorded 2001-09-11 - you can feel the emotions, the vibes and the power! Always getting goose bumps while hearing fragile!
Thanks for weighing in, Armin!
Great word to describe Sting's voice.."Tubular." Definitely a unique timbre. Great singer. You can also hear the Reggae influence.
Thanks for listening!
STING es Un Dios!!! Todo SUPERRR!!!
Si!!!!!
Sting is an amazing musician and lyricist. He has a very unique singing style, you know his voice instantly.
As a request I would love it if you did something on Ian Astbury from the Cult
Thanks for the suggestion, kevin!
I absolutely love Sting. There's so many of his songs I love that are amazing. My favorite song is 'Ghost Story'. It just really gets to me. It's the most romantic, beautiful, poetic song of his to me. Of course, 'Fragile' is also wonderful too. that whole entire album Nothing like the Sun... I adore it. He won best jazz album in '88 on the Grammys. I actually have a special, Moon tattoo based on 'Sister Moon' . Another singer I adore is Peter Gabriel. ♥️
I love this artist 👏
Me too.
Thanks coach Ken I'm a fan of Sting
Me too!
aaaahh Sting..and police amazing and great job !!!
Indeed!
I’ve looked up to Sting for a long time. He’s from another musical planet, where folks like Prince and Bobby McFerrin come from. His range is amazing from rock/pop, fusion, and scatting out jazz. My personal favorites to sing are “Fields of Gold” and “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You”. :)
I want to go to that planet, Patrick!
@@kentamplin so do I 😁
I love "Seven Days"
God bless you for making this video. Sting is my inspiration for signing 🙏🗣
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Sgtlonly!
I enjoyed this ..'I'll be watching You'🎵🤗❤
Rock on!
I think of Desert Rose. When I heard it I thought it was the most beautiful thing.
Beautiful song!
Sting, so conscious and so smooth. If I Ever Lose my Faith in You, there's a studio performance that really shows his vocal skillz and his deep, searching quality as a man. It looks effortless, but he is concentrating. He touches people strongly and gently, but as if from a distance, as his face shows him go deep as he watches his inner coursing.
Thank you, Shivani!
He's just amazing! It's a great coinscidence, I'm just listening to The Police right now! Awesome!
I love when that happens, Deborah!
Walking On The Moon is such a fun song to play the bass parts of! Love it's time changes!
Love it!
This series is fantastic! It's exciting waiting to see who is up next and I am so happy to see Sting! When I was a teen I wore out my mom's Synchronicity album, and I still have Desert Rose on my current playlist. What I like about Sting most is the color of his voice. No mistaking it, whether it's his own music or he's singing background vocals for other artists. 😊
That is awesome!
hounds of winter love it
👍👍👍
I went off Sting a bit when he flew into the UK from his house in Malibu, told us how great the British winter was and that we shouldn't fly to sunnier places, then went back to Malibu.
Rock on!
Amazing artist. One of the few artist you understand what he is singing haha. Legend
Haha!
I would love to see what makes Ed Kowalczyk great! For a singer ! Favorite band in the world LIVE lighting crashes!
Thanks for the suggestion, Joshua!
Who did not sing along with Roxanne, awesome.
Haha!
I love the Police and Sting.
👍👍👍
Loving this series 'What makes this singer great'. Not only learning about the artist but also the style and technique they use. Very useful information. I also find a joy to hear your professional appraisals of the artist. It's like watching a professional sports person you have complete respect for commentating on a sports match.
That said, I wondered if a reaction could be done on James Brown. I was fortunate to see him live in his later years. He was on the support bill for The chilli peppers. He stool the show. He taught me about showmanship. Not that I'm a good student mind.
Thank you, kiethy!
Killer Drums.
Absolutely!
Dude, I love to hear you sing. Especially because your teaching the techniques you are using. Your voice is so so amazing. Have you ever been a radio dj? You would be a top tier one if so. You know so much.
Nope. Haven't had that job. (yet...)
Great video...I do your lessons and Ive just scored a gig as lead singer in a band the does all police songs. Ive stated learning the songs and the timing is hard as the song may be 4/4 but the drummer is doing something different and you need to come in before the 4/4 beat..its different ..a bit like jazz
Have you heard of Gustavo Cerati? He's one of, if not the best singer in latin rock music
Sting has been essential my idol for singing I've listened to his music from the 90s I always loved his vocal range and yes he is well known for his lead singing In The police however his soul stuff is also worth looking at hes been making music for decades and is still making them I love the album 57th and 9th goes back to traditional rock and roll feel for some of the songs and then the able The last ship sails a muscial which was very different then what he has done before. I would love to see maybe a video of the evolution of how his voice changed from younger to now in more recent years to give a better perspective of how voice can change over the course of time. I have also studied music from a young age but only in college I decided to get into voice by just joining the concert chorus in college then afterwards I did private vocal lessons through the college as well and did a few performances and sung the national anthem for graduation I love singing !!! And I love this channel haha.
I love fragile, shape of my hearth, and all this time. I know how to play fragile on the guitar and I'm trying to learn to sing it
Ken, Roxanne is a really great song!
It is!
I love sting Music critics always did not like his solo music at all and gave him so much crap... I love his personality because he didn’t care he kept writing and making solo music !
Thanks for weighing in, Joshua!
What makes Sting great?
Putting up with Stewart as long as he did🕺
"Theirs a little black spot on the sun today..
....that's my soul up there🤟
Thanks Ken
Great singer
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it, David!
I don't think Sting is the same without Stewart Copeland's drumming though. The music was so good, shame the rest was a mess.
Sting is my singing idol, just love the polices stuff! Tea in the Sahara on synchronicity is very underrated also.
Alexander 👍
Love you made a video about Sting 👍👌
Hope you enjoyed it!
Fields of Gold and If I Ever Lose My Faith are standouts. My favourite Sting album however is Dream of the Blue Turtles. Moon Over Bourbon Street with the fretless bass is stunning, but the song that does it for me is Fortress Round Your Heart.
Great songs!
Sting is sweating like a miner. Finally, someone is really working for my entrance fee ticket....😊
Haha!
Ken thank you for this video especially and for all your hard work. Sting is one artist that I've followed for years and has influenced me since I was young. I love both the solo material and what he's done with the Police. One song in particular I really like is " Fortress Around My Heart " Something about the arrangement, lyrics, the different instruments used just gives me chills. Thanks again and be safe.
My pleasure, Paul! Rock on!
Ken...do Linda Rosandt next!!! That'll be great
Thanks for the suggestion, Winter!
The Police came to my attention in High School and with bands like Cheap Trick seemed so unique and the songs so catchy. I had a friend named "Roxanne" so we would all sing that one to her. LOL. This was in the late 70's and then in the early 80's while at ASU I went to a Police concert and it was awesome! Then in the mid 90's I was back at school and into Computer Science and 3D graphics and I was an intern at Pixel Kitchen in Boulder, CO and remember listening to Sting's solo album while creating. So yeah. He's important to me.
The soundtrack of your life!
Awesome choice Ken I absolutely love sting he was a great singer loved him solo and with the police I have sting the very best of sting on CD love that album loved every breathe you take if I ever lose my faith when we dance fields of gold love those songs he had great songs a great voice he rocks he is awesome loved the police loved his solo songs he has my vote love the guy ken👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I take it you're a fan. 🤣
Yes Ken I'm a fan sure am man hes great i don't know why anybody wouldn't like him but yea Ken he is great
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I recall an interview with Billy Idol on the end of a B site of one of his albums quite awhile back and he was talking about people who were 'great singers' vs people who 'sing great'.
He was talking about as an example Mick Jagger. Doesnt necessarily sing great but he is a great singer. Occasionally you get someone like Freddie Mercury who is both.
Sting has a very distinct voice. You hear him and you know who it is. I really like the old Police songs.
Thanks for sharing that with us, James!
amazing
ken !
next myles kennedy please :)
Thanks, Agu!
I do like Sting, but some things about his voice sound a bit off to me. Like, I've always thought his voice is a bit too breathy, at times borderline hiatus, but hey that's just me.
Fair enough. Thanks, Julian.
Hi Ken, thanks for the video! What do you mean by "tubular" when describing Sting's voice?
Also would love absolutely love to see what makes Myles Kennedy great part of alterbridge he is a phenomenal vocalist!
Thanks for the suggestion, Joshua!
I was fortunate to see them on the Ghost in the Machine tour. All of the songs you mentioned are great. I often find myself listening to Wrapped Around Your Finger. Loved the video for that one, the performance video with all the candles. It was in pretty heavy rotation on MTV if memory serves. Great selection as always.
Cool!
I have a suggestion...well two. I'd love to hear your comments on Peter Gabriel. Also, I grew up on Olivia Newton-John. My Mom took me to see her on the Physical tour. My first concert. I think a great song of hers to show the way she sings and a range like hers is 'Totally Hot'. 😁 - Staci ty!!!
❤️
❤️❤️❤️
Mike Patton would be a good one to do.
Thank you, Cade.
Would love to see a reaction to Roger Daltrey of The Who

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy awesome thank you!
I have another request for you maybe you could do Christopher cross loved him as well he had a unique voice Ken
We'll see...
Ok Ken thanks anyways ok thought i would suggest it
Cade, Christopher Cross' albums were those types of ones that you used to check if your stereo was good quality. Flawless production by Michael Omartian, and absolute guns in the studio with him.
React to Luis Miguel! Many consider him one of the best hispanic singers of all time!
Thanks for the suggestion.
I think it was a black & yellow horizontal stripe jumper, dude!
Rock on!
Can you do one on Waylon Jennings
Maybe...
whats the difference of voices of paul mccartney and john lennon?
Rock on, Riccardo!
I’m looking for a drummer. I’m a guitarist / vocalist and I also play bass. I can’t pay you rn but as soon as we get gigs I’ll cut ya in
If you haven’t done so, you should do Scott Weiland!
Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for all your wonderful videos!
Can you react to Matt Bellamy?
Thanks for the suggestion.
I mentioned sting a bit back, and I'm glad you got to him. Great singer. Perhaps you can do Bono sometime soon? Thanks for another great vid!
My pleasure!
Maby a vocal coach listen to meatloaf, really underrated singer in my opinion!
Thanks for the suggestion.
Ken , could you do a video of noddy holder from slade?:")
Thanks for the suggestion.
You really need to do this series for "Meat Loaf". By far the best theatrical rock singer.
Thanks, Otter!
Hey Ken! Would be nice if you did a reaction to Luis Miguel, he is the biggest artist in Latin America, as a reference, he sang for Frank Sinatra’s living homage, he is an amazing singer, and has a great great career, he used to be mariah carey’s boyfriend, and he never wanted to do a duet with her, its worth to listen
Thanks, Gaston! Rock on!
Dear Ken.I know you’re very busy with your journey of reactions but if you can find some time to check Dimash’s latest song called “Across Endless Dimension”,it’s a soundtrack of a movie coming up in Movie theaters soon,it’s really good..will be appreciated.Thank you. By the way I grew up listening to Sting ,love him and great reaction of yours as usual.Thnx
Thanks for the suggestion.
Hello, react to the band Architects, Sam Carter vcalist if it's not too muco for you
Thanks for the suggestion.
Ken, talk about Sting’s solo career. I’ve been a fan of his for decades. Police was fine but he is so much more!
He is!
I think my pitch is ok on most songs but my tone is shit
My course can help. kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Only song that I like was don’t stand so close to me , didn’t have the greatest voice but was ok I prefer Lou Gramm or Steve Perry
now when you mention 3 piece bands do you think about RUSH, ZZ TOP or even GREENDAY? now I know there are others but these are the first 3 i think of in my head, I am just curious.
and now we have a run of 2 piece bands like ROYAL BLOOD, THE BLUE STONES, and DEATH FROM ABOVE. What do you think of this? Personally I like what I have heard from these bands and was surprised to find out they were 2 piece bands.
(well there is U.S.S. (UBIQUITOUS SYNERGY SEAKERS) too, I saw them live, it was a good show)
Given, 3 of these 2 piece bands are Canadian like me, so it's all good lol
sorry for the babble but it's been a long day lol
Big discussion there, maybe I'll a video on it.
@@kentamplin sounds pretty good
Sting (der Stachel !) Got no knowlegsh about sting but must declay a very melodic Singer he was ! So i remember he wos Begining first with a Band named Polizei police ! But what makes This Singer great you ask ? Maybe reason is he sings Softly in Performance himself ! Not agressive or sinister or so ! Just music to relax false whrit i give a shit ! Yol Ken Situation is worst under a hightreasent consolor ! To much Political statment on a musicchanel so Ken i just say stay strong in your roots ! Like a old tree das Wort für Baum i mean ! May god bless us all -end
Thanks for your comment, Jörgar!
Can you react to the kid LAROI?
Thanks for the suggestion, lui hedlund!
