Adam, your engine is OK,don't worry about it. All the tests you've done indicate it's functioning properly, just continue
to do regular service on it. These are good engines, you just have to get to know how to maintain them correctly which
sadly a lot of them have been ruined due to poor maintenance. This is especially true with the V12, I've seen a lot of
them discarded simply due to lack of knowledge of maintaining them. I've worked on these cars when they were a few
years old,so I remember them when they were brand new. have a nice day, stay safe you and your family keep up the good work.

I have no experience with the XK engine and I have not followed your whole series. I have been turning wrenches for more than 40 years, and when rebuilding engines I always replace all the cylinder head fasteners studs and nuts with high quality new. I usually use ARP fasteners even on standard engines that will never see competitive racing use. Doesn’t matter how nice the old fasteners look, always use new fasteners. It’s an expense that assures me that I won’t see an engine return for reasons of fastener unreliability. I always torque the head bolts and nuts twice, and use any fastener lubricant as specified. I always run the engine through several thermal cycles and again check the fastener torque. Best wishes that your engine stays on the good side!

Yes, it follows that if the head was skimmed, it is now lower down (obviously by a tiny amount) on the bolts, so a bit extra compensation on the torque wrench setting probably helps.

If you have changed the HG and did a good job (plaining of the head, new gasket, good studs, correct torqueing) and you haven't been leaning on the engine hard it is unlikely that the HG is the problem.
Could be that the re-torqueing has pushed the cilinder liners tighter down in the block. That might have sealed up the cooling system.
Anyway, good to see that the engine seems to be behaving like it should.

Just a thought, I had an XJ12 TWR with a 6.0 ltr engine. I had problems with water getting into the fuel tanks... From memory the right hand side... If you are getting water in your petrol, in turn it's getting sucked up into the engine. It will run lumpy and will steam more in its exhaust.... Just an idea... Keep up the good work...

Hi Adam,..that sounds like "great news".
I'm really happy to know that the "problem" seemed to have been "fixed".
I heard from other people that have used that "head fixer in a bottle" in the past, is that you have to GIVE IT TIME, and that it will eventually do it's work with the continued use and running of the engine.
Has you mentioned Adam, you will keep an eye on it and monitor it's results has you use the car.
Thanks for another great video and I hope also that the engine will keep working well with no issues.

I see you've been very thorough with your checks; torque, gasket and surface cleanliness, with the hot & cold engine. From my view, it idles very smoothly, and when you conducted the compression test, which is at cranking speed, variance may well have been from new. In the Chrysler Valiant engines ('Slant' 6, 225 cu. in.) the service manual gives a 'specification' for a compression test, a value between 110 and 140 p.s.i. as an acceptable reading. I don't know what is specified for the Jaguar, but regular monitoring & maintenance would see a good few more miles and years of service with that engine.. Good work there..

It seems to be running ok, just keep an eye on it, check oil and water regularly ( you can see when coolant gets in with the oil ) and keep driving it.
I would always be dubious about those repair in a can products, they are probably good to get you out of trouble short term, but as a long term repair, NO!
Also this car would be from the troubled with ''BL'' the big merger and trade unions, Jaguars and others suffered build quality issues.
I know a man who has a lot of experience with Jaguars of all models, he said he would not touch an 1980,s built Jaguar due to the build quality issues.

100 psi in your #2 cylinder is not normal. the average of the other cylinders is 143, 100 psi is along way off from that. question is now is it bottom end or top end. drop some oil down #2 cylinder and see if it improves. if so you have a piston ring problem. if no change. then you have a burnt valve problem. ( i know the head was checked at the machine shop so.........)

Hello. Love the video's. Just sharing a view, I was brought up on the school of thought that when you re-torque head bolts, you always back off 1/4 turn 1st. This is what I have always done if the manual says it or not but I am by no means a mechanic, more an enthusiastic DIY'er with many years experience and engine/head rebuilds on my own cars under my belt. I have experimented and tried re-torqueing without the 1/4 turn back off and found the bolts do not move on re-torque but with the 1/4 turn back off, they always tighten considerably. I have only re-torqued once after 1500 miles post re-build. This is my experience, but like I say, I am not a pro.

    @frasermitchell9183 3 роки тому

    from Fraser, husband of Leslie
Sorry to be a spectre at the feast, but IMHO, the torque-down is unlikely to solve your problem. A 1975 car will have the 7L block with the long studs. These, and the 8L blocks, suffer from cracking of the block between the bores. The blocks have coolant transfer passages machined via the cylinder bores, and thin wall liners are used to close these off, and make the cylinder ready for the pistons and engine assembly. The cast iron at the top between the bores thus forms a narrow bridge and over time, a crack forms in this, and destroys any bridge strength that was there. Sinkage occurs and the head gasket fails, and replacements will continue to fail until the reason is addressed. The cracks cannot be welded, but the cure is to strip the engine to a bare block, machine out the original liners, then machine a recess all round at the top of each bore and insert lipped liners that touch each other and cover the crack. This is a rather expensive operation, so most people don't do it !
How do I know all this ? It happened to me !!!! Except I got lucky and found an uncracked 7l block to build my engine around. That was in 1990 and that car is still running today, although I sold it in 2003, having owned it for 14 years.

So this perfectionist is driving an old English Jaguar. His engine blew a headgasket. Het repaired it. It runs fine now. He wants a new engine. I don't get it.Besides that, if you are that perfectionist, buy an old Lexus 400, I would say.
