      I love Tommy Takeover! It might be fun to have Pan Cam if he wants to video a toddler tour of the house 😂 (him behind the camera of course and muted as you said you don’t want to put him on the internet)

      @L G Oh we have CCTV, I showed that in the empty house tour! The previous owners had multiple cameras installed and left it behind for us :) It's really good as it records 24/7 and you can clearly see who is coming into the garden on both ends and also out back!

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +5

      @L G I think it’s a valid concern for sure, I just forget that not every follower will be aware of every update I’ve shared etc but yeah I think I’d be far more secretive about even the exterior of the house if we didn’t have all of the security ❤️ But also as someone in T.V said to me, people know where many ‘well known’ Irish people live (same in the U.K) and it eventually becomes common knowledge among people in the area who are aware of said people … but I’ve never heard of anything bad happening to any of these people or their homes, likely as they all have CCTV (our cameras are visible as you approach the house but then also some are hidden), I think the vast vast majority of people are good people! If anything were ever to happen to me I feel it would be on the street but gotta just carry on living life xxx Sending lots of love!

    Love this, Mel! Thank you for showing how us normies do things 😂 My parents renovated a very old house by themselves (+occasional help from friends and me and my sister), all that while raising 2 kids and having full-time jobs and it took them 10 years!! It takes a whole lot of effort and time put into it, but now it is a safe haven for everyone who comes in here.

    I'm so glad you're doing your renovation so openly and honestly, especially the budgeting and financing parts.
    When it comes to buying a house 3 to 5 years down the line, my fiancé and i are seriously considering buying a cheaper older house and renovating it ourselves. That way it can be to our own liking, but aren't sure how viable that would be despite how preferable it'd be for us. Videos like this give massive insight into what it may be like and show how much you can get from it.

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +11

      I think going with a cheaper older house and going into it with money to renovate is the smartest decision for sure! Our house WASN’T cheap because we wanted to live within an easy driving distance of family and friends (mainly Thomas’s family, was very very important to him) and it was important to me that my dad have siblings and friends nearby for when he gets older and even for now as he’s unfortunately got a really serious illness 😞 So we were really attached to buying in an area where it’s pretty impossible to get anything cheap! That left us with about 30k in savings for immediate reno work going in (without touching the emergency fund!) but we’ve been adding to that since we moved in … it keeps emptying faster than we can fill it! 😂 We’ve probably spent about 24k already like. And none of the rooms look good apart from my office but the way we see it, the sooner I can establish a nice video set up and a working schedule - which I’ve not had for a few years - the more money we can earn to dump into home improvements! My dad is paying for his ‘granny flat’ build himself so we are just responsible for our house … I’m anticipating that within 5-10 years we’ll spend about 100k or more on doing the place up! 💚

    Honestly this has been a breath of fresh air. My partner and I have bought our first home which is a reno project. Currently sleeping on a mattress on the floor with no lights as we’re in the middle of a rewire and no hot water. I kept feeling like I was somehow doing this reno journey wrong with how hard it’s being, after not seeing anything that resembles my reality of renovating. Also not wanting to complain because anyone with their own is so lucky in this climate.
    Seeing this has been so comforting, we’ll both get there in the end! Thank you for being so honest with your experience ♥️

    Can’t wait to see the transformation 😊 as someone who goes between liking new builds and older fixer-uppers I’m wondering if you could talk about what you think you’re “missing out” from new builds and then what you think you would miss from the older house renovation if you had gone for a new house. Just A bit of a pros and cons (from your perspective! Interested in your thoughts) 🙏🏻 older houses have more character but Renovation looks wild 😂

    I really enjoyed watching this video. It feels real and paints the true picture of house renovations. We bought a house almost 3 years ago and are also doing most of the things ourselves and we still have lots to do. Sometimes a room might take 6 months or more to do, since you may uncover new things that need fixing, or you are simply doing it in the evenings or weekends so it becomes just a never-ending side project. Despite it all, it is so lovely to see the final result and knowing that you did it yourself, you just have to try to not put too much pressure on yourself. You guys bought a 'forever home' so you will eventually get it all sorted. I think people also sometimes think that it is a race to get the house ready in a short period of time, but in the grand scheme of things if you are already living in your forever home and you are doing it yourself, what does it matter if a room takes 6 months to do? Anyway, to summarise it all, I enjoy watching your videos, it resonated with me. Best of luck with your house renovations! :)

    Recently moved into somewhere that had a carpet moth infestation and it was HORRIBLE 🙃. Genuinely don’t know how the previous tenants lived with chunks of their carpet missing and dead moths in the drawers. It’s finally sorted but it turned me into a proper moth obsessed weirdo killing every bug that I spotted 😅.

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +15

      Omg it’s so rotten isn’t it!? 😭 We’ve tried everythinggg … but apparently they get behind skirting and even under carpets so it’s ALL going! Will likely have to spray something too before we put in anything new! 🤢 There ARE people in forums who have been successful with banishing them without having to replace everything, but seeing as we’ve such an extreme amount of them across the house + are doing it up anyway we’re just speeding up certain things to get rid of them as I honestly can’t copeee lol

    In the states, it’s been really difficult to get appliances in because everything is still so back ordered from Covid. We desperately needed a new dishwasher so we went to a little mom and pop place about an hour outside of the city we live in and were able to get a great dishwasher within about two weeks. The big box stores couldn’t even give us an estimated date of arrival.

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +4

      THIS! Honestly certain things I ordered for the office (like the chair) took weeks to arrive and I’ve had to cancel orders because they just weren’t showing up! We went to IKEA one day looking for certain things and so much of it wasn’t in stock! 🤯 xxx

    You're so right about the difference between renovating and decorating. Actually I'm always really disappointed when I find a new renovation channel and it turns out that it's only advice on picture frames and vases. So I'm looking forward to your videos for different rooms and the cost breakdowns.
    And the moth infestation brought back bad memories from my childhood. I remember the dark brown wool rug that the moths adored. I think my parents bought it in Ireland on their honeymoon.

    Loved this vlog, it's real. Most people know the difference between real people and the 'snap your fingers and a room is done' type vlogs, I think! You have a toddler, are pregnant, both work...so take your time, enjoy the journey. Only millionaires get houses turned around in jig time. For most of us it can take years to totally renovate, specially if it's an old house. Love that tree over your garden bench. :-)

    I am a renter and will likely never be able to afford owning a home I can renovate, so watching these videos kind of feels like living vicariously through you, which makes me appreciate the reality of it even more. As a Canadian, I also just love seeing how so many things are the same and yet the subtle differences as well. For example, hardly any homes in Canada (at least where I live) have radiators because they simply don't make sense in our environment, so that's not an issue of renovation I would likely ever come across. All this to say, thank you for sharing, another cozy and comforting vlog, as usual.

    • @juliettehamelle1747
      @juliettehamelle1747 2 роки тому +2

      No radiators? How do you stay warm? 🤯

    • @CaitlinPlant
      @CaitlinPlant 2 роки тому +1

      @@juliettehamelle1747 We typically have central heating from a furnace that pushes heat through vents in every room. Some are electric, some are gas, some older houses still have wood-burning furnaces, it really depends. My house has a gas fireplace in our living room as well for additional warmth in our most-used living space. I know there are homes that do have electric radiators along the baseboards, like in apartments or townhouses, but they definitely aren't as common here as they are there. We usually have our heating on from September or October until March or April so efficient heating is important here. :)

    If you’d like some privacy (although, I didn’t even know you could legally build a two story back garden house!) May I recommend roof curtains? They’re a pain to clean, but they can make a place look really whimsical when done right.

    You touched a bit on the financial aspect of home renovation. I hope when you discuss this further down the line you include (deduct) all the freebies and massive discounts you have been gifted as us viewers don't get these financial breaks. Just something to be considerate of especially with how hard things are for people. Most can't even afford to heat their homes for winter.

      I 100% will be! That’s why I’ve been so transparent about things so far. But in my office for example, everything was either DIY or paid for (by us) other than a mirror that was gifted! Bit of a discount on the floor too but it was like 1300 euro including installation … I will mention everything and also cheaper alternatives to expensive choices! The main saving we’ve made through my content creation has been our wooden flooring for the living area and front hall - yet to go down, and we absolutely would have held off on doing the living room if we weren’t doing that collaboration! Xxx

    I moved into a flat that had a carpet moth infestation. The first day I remember going into the bedroom and just seeing moths covering the walls (I completely freaked out). I spoke to the neighbours and they said that they were keeping their clothes in the freezer to stop the larvae growing 😭😭 the landlord thankfully let me out of the contract, but I wish you the best of luck getting rid of the little bastards!! Hey Melanie, we took on a Reno project as our first home and naively thought we’d afford to do it all but in the end we just couldn’t, the costs are immense. We’ve since moved on into (yet another) Reno project and we’ve done a lot but now the funds have run out so a lot has been put on the back burner until we Can afford and with another little one here now it’s hard to do anything!
    Think the idea of you doing a vlog where you explain the costs would be absolutely fantastic because I struggle to find anyone on the internet being transparent about this and it can look to people like it was easy and would be good for people starting out to have a realistic idea of the costs, time, and STRESS 😂 Involved ❤️

    My husband and I bought a house from 1970 10 months ago and we have been doing all the renovations ourselves and holy cow it is so much work. The first three months were really overwhelming and exhausting. We originally took 3 weeks off from work over Christmas thinking we would be able to do the bulk of the renovations but everything takes so much longer than you think. We thought a lick of paint on the walls and changing the carpet on the stairs to laminate would be all but NOPE. It is still a work in progress now I know how to renovate stairs, lay down floor tiles, paint walls and doors, install coving, top up the water on the boiler and even reupholster antique furniture. I suspect we will be working on the house for years to come but hey, we have a home and every year it will get better

      Omg THIS! At the start Caoimhe and I were planning the office reno (started there because gotta keep working in order to earn the money FOR the reno) and we were like ‘there’s zero reason this won’t be done by the Glass Houses book launch on May 5th’ … here we are only finishing up and it’s … September! 😂 Because so many other things came up for us too! We always planned to do things slowly but then it’s like ‘oh our son can run now and we need to protect him from the main road outside our house. There’s no gates!’ ‘How much would two gates be? On the cheap end?’ ‘3500!’ ‘Holy shit okay!’ and it’s basically been that but with every room, mainly plumbing and wiring were the big issues we had to start addressing quite quickly! As of course the thought of spending money and time making a room look beautiful then having to destroy it in a few years to fix a leak or an electrical hazard is horrendous so we said we’d do everything right the first time and do things in the right order. So it’s meant looking at manky carpet etc for a long time! 😂 But all our hard work WILL be worth it and look at us learning new skills! 😍 xxxxx

      @@melaniemurphyofficial my office was also meant to be the first room we finished since I mostly work from home. We did it quickly and then when I started sitting in there I decided that I hated it hahahah it just felt like a white box so I am currently writing this from the living room, where I work, while we add coving, re-paint and add shelves for plants to my office 😂 So doing it right the first time is definitely the way to go! In terms of finding things to do you didn't expect, our boiler broke down one month after moving in and we had to pay 2500 euros and wait a month (in the middle of winter) to get it replaced 🥲. So...many...cold showers 🥶

    I will actually inherit my grandmother's house very soon (I'm 20 right now) and it's huge with massive stables right next to it - don't know yet what to do with it. I love the idea of fixing it up for my future family but I'M TWENTY and where would the money for that be coming from... It just feels like a huge responsibility. At the same time I see your vlogs (which are sososo wholesome and inspirational) and know that most people in my generation may never own any property- it's just hard. It feels like something I shouldn't have the right to decide over until I'm 30.

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +9

      At least you don’t have to decide immediately ❤️ Would it perhaps be possible to rent it out in the meantime? Would be some handy income (toward possible savings for a reno! Or for something entirely different like travel!) … I can only imagine how big of a deal that must be to you, but regardless you deserve to celebrate as that’s an unbelievable helping hand from your dear grandmother. Life is hard enough so please never feel bad or like you ‘don’t deserve it’, most of the people I know in their 50s with nice houses built them for pennies on land given to them by parents or land they inherited! And most people of our generation could only dream of that when once upon a time it was the norm. I certainly hope my home and land can go to my kids and grandkids … it’s beautiful 🥰

    It's so annoying when influencers or celebrities do these stuff and are kinda sly about the fact they get so much stuff gifted and they're like "we got this done and this done." I watch sometimes this channel where they bought way newer house but redid everything pretty much and the influencer/woman in the couple was so unpatient like if they couldn't get builders or painters when she wanted. Like be grateful that you propably got most of it with for free or heavily discounted. So nice that you're down to earth and giving the costs aswell. I've gone through 2 major renovations my parents did on their house when we were kids and I completely missed the significance and arguments and budget aspects back then. My mom is now building a new house on their property (it's big enough to do that) and at some point the old house will be torn down. That part may end up being my and my brother's responsibility when we inherite.. the sticker shock on all aspects of building a house was real. And now I'm old enough to understand things!
    But currently we're (me and partner and our child) are renting snd the closest we've gotten to our own reno experiences is the bug infestation that came out of the new fridge the owner put in at our last place. THOUSANDS of winged termite looking things apparently hatched out of their eggs in the mechanical part of the fridge after delivery and covered the downstairs.
    The owner refused to pay for an exterminator and claimed they didn't even believe us because it made no sense that they came with the fridge. Instead they called Lowe's (where the fridge came from) and asked them about it. Like, wtf is Lowe's going to do? The fridge worked fine. They're not exterminators. I think she asked for a discount on the fridge because of the bugs she told us couldn't have possibly been in the fridge. She didn't get a discount. And we didn't get an exterminator. It was insane living there and spraying bugs constantly with bug spray and windex while we waited out their life spans.
    We were so glad to move. We don't know when we're financially ready to buy if it's going to be a brand new place or a fixer upper. So we'll see if further renovation excitement is in our future 😅

    I think it's better to just not have carpets. The moths will likely infest the new ones even if synthetic. Plus carpets are always full of allergens, dirt and toxins. Yes, hardwoods are more expensive but they're healthier and they last a hundred years.

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +8

      I am not worried about an infestation in the new synthetic carpet as the living room carpet in the house is synthetic and they thankfully never set up shop in there! Even though they multiplied like crazy in every other room. On top of repellents etc and OTT cleaning I think it will be a good temporary solution as there’s just no way in the world we could justify putting down wood across the entire house, the only reason we are doing the living room and hallway so soon is that we got an amazing collab! The dream eventually is of course to have wood throughout the house but there’s too much costly work to be done in terms of re-wiring, insulating etc etc … the goal is to just keep them at bay as best we can 🥰

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 роки тому +3

      We all gotta start somewhere! I had fifty quid to my name until I was about 24 and didn’t have an actual emergency fund that I didn’t touch until 25-26 - ONLY because I was very lucky at the time with the type of work I fell into! I got a couple of big jobs and put the money aside and have never touched it! Not for buying the house/for the wedding … I just pretend I don’t have it, that that number is actually zero! I know that my dad was in his mid thirties and would have us on weekends and would go to the bank machine and literally nothing would come out 😞 Going through big life events like divorce etc can really knock people back! It was years before he had no credit card debt and all that … my main point there which I totally should have clarified was that deciding to renovate an old house should always be based on the ability to have an emergency fund as things can pop up (like all the leaks we had etc!) and if you go into it without enough saved you may put yourself at risk of missing important repayments (mortgage and bills etc!) but a lot of people go into it thinking ‘ah it will be grand’ as sometimes older homes are cheaper to buy. Renovation is just crazy costly especially post Covid! Xxxxx

    We also have an old house. Renovating takes a lot of time and money... BTW: my family has had cloth moths, food moths, silver fishes, and more, and there is one HUGE advantage about these kind of insects: they can't survive outside in places that actually have a winter. Thus, they don't move out and back in again when you try to get rid of them. There are various poisons and sticky tape you can use to kill them, but the best thing to do with clothes and sheets is to freeze them, and then place most of them in boxes that are taped shut for the time you're getting rid of these f***ers!
    BTW, tell your husband that moths are a HUGE problem, as they ruin clothes, you can bring them with you to other people's houses, and at some point you might find yourself wearing something infested with larvae - absolutely disfusting.
