yeah that ad campaign was horrendous. I absolutely adore Mother 2. The reason why Nintendo is so weird on the series is because it sold poorly outside of Japan. But in Japan, Mother is a beloved franchise. Only place I’ve found Mother merchandise was a toy store in Kyoto.
To be honest, I hope they create a limited physical edition of all three games in a trilogy instead of just doing mother 3, I would love to be able to purchase the games separately rather than just playing them through the switch online service, it just makes the games seem more like whole experiences and I want a way to buy them and keep them rather than just paying a fee to rent them. Plus, a physical cartridge with all three games would be a fantastic collector’s item
Another thing to note about Earthbound Beginnings is that they kinda can't include in the NES NSO app because it's rated T for Teen while the NES NSO app is rated E10+
You would think so, but both Demon's Crest and Wild Guns are T-Rated games available on the SNES Online, the latter even having it's rating on the box art to boot.
What's funny is that I instantly became a Mother/Earthbound fan after just 2 minutes of playing Earthbound *Beginnings* . That's how much the series is awesome. I haven't even played Earthbound (Mother 2) but I already know it's good
I played Earthbound first not knowing it was a sequel to a game that had at that time not been released outside of Japan and played Earthbound Beginnings years later. Earthbound takes nearly everything that made Earthbound Beginnings great and vastly improves upon it. Mother 3 is quite different from the other two, but is awesome in its own right.
I bought a 3ds just to play earthbound but I got scammed into buying a "new" classic 3ds instead of a new 3ds. I ended up just emulating them and pirating the ROMs, but I was willing to pay, it's just I couldn't.
I love Earthbound! I playes through it with my best friend and it is true, there is no other game that left such an impact on me than it, we recently started playing mother 3 and it is awesome!
I have the impression Nintendo isn't really too proud of the series. Even in the original release back in 1994 they had to pack a game guide with it probably because they thought the target audience would find the game too confusing. With Mother 3, Besides the whole Magypsie thing they also had a lot of adult jokes that a lot of people wouldn't find okay today. Nintendo really likes the philosophy of producing very simplistic easy to pick up family friendly games.
They’re definitely concerned with it outside of Japan. Both games are pretty heavily censored and they probably don’t feel it’s worth censoring mother 3
I get that. But What I don't get is why they don't just slap an M-rating on the game and translate it with all the "controversial" topics. The switch needs its adult games too and it's so unfair that a game that is defined by it's deep and emotionally complex story is held back BECAUSE of it.🙄🙄
Why does everyone want remastered games? Why can't it just be rereleased on modern consoles with it's original graphics and sounds, like old black and white movies are rereleased in new formats with no, or very little, alterations.
Played em all. Beat em all. Many times. Love em all. High replay value. Insanely entertaining games. Wonderful soundtracks. Amazing mechanics. Way ahead of it's time. Def a fanboy.
I played Undertale (yes, yes I know mother fans hate when you compare the two but bare with me) and absolutely loved it. Then recently I heard Toby fox drew inspiration from the mother series, I also heard all the mother fans mad at everyone comparing the two (including my best friend), and he gripes about how the series gets no love since he was 10, so I decided to check it out last month. To my surprise the earthbound series became some of the most interesting and compelling games I've ever played. I blasted through mother 2 and 3. It kept me interested in a way that even new fancy triple A titles like RDR2, HZD and Star Wars: Fallen Order, didn't. In fact when I started playing Mother 2, I was in the middle of RDR2. I was so enthralled by M2 I dropped it and went on a mother binge. Now I'm that friend that complains when people compare Undertale to Mother.
Honestly, I'd be fine paying for the mother series on the switch, like, at least we'd get it then? I do have earthbound, and that shit was hard to find, but even then, I would be stoked to play on the switch.
This video has certainly aged, though how it aged may be up for debate. 2:17 At least one of the tracks is straight-up Beatles music. 4:17 It took a little over a year, but it happened - for the first two game, anyway.
Well I really do appreciate the fact that you actually watched and read the title before blindly declaring that it aged poorly since I never said it would never come just that Nintendo was being weird about it(5 years is weird) I did neglect the Beatles music but it wasn’t a problem on the Wii U, 3DS, or SNES classic so I don’t think that’s why there was such a long wait. Hopefully Nintendo just releases the third game once and for all even though I worry they’ll censor things leaving the Starman.net translation as the superior way to play the game
They localized Mother 1 and put it on the Wii U, Earthbound is on Wii U and new 3DS and SNES classic (I played it on snes classic) Aside from Mother 3 probably never being localized, Why don’t we at least have Mother and Earthbound
With regards to copyright issues, as far as I can recall, it largely had to do with the music. Many of the game’s tracks sample from all sorts of artists, from Chuck Berry to the Beach Boys.
Oh well, at least it's on SNES Classic ☺ Although I realize not every one has one, but hopefully you can get one these days without scalpers seizing an "opportunity"
If they were to release it for the switch I think a remake in the style of the new Link’s Awakening would be the best. I think it would fit Earthbound’s visuals and intriguing to new audiences. Don’t think they’ll ever localize Mother 3 though :/
The biggest and most likely reason I don’t think Mother 3 has been officially localized is that it’s too hard of work for too little reward. Mother 3’s text was hard coded into the game. Making simply going in and changing some strings near impossible. This was stated by the fan translation’s leader. While Mother is indeed popular here in the west, it still isn’t popular enough to warrant that much work in the eyes of Nintendo. Plus, with Iwata and Reggie gone, there really isn’t anyone at Nintendo pushing to bring Mother 3 to the west.
“Pirating is almost always a availability issue than a money one.” It’s completely cool. If you want to support Itoi though, they have an official (still active and adding new merch) Mother store you can check out.

Sometimes it feels like Nintendo just go out of their way to not listen to the fans. Why can't I play more N64, gamecube, wii games on the switch ? Not third party ones, but things like metroid prime, star fox adventures, windwaker, donkey kong 64 etc. I mean why wouldn't they sell them. Even if they sold them 15 bucks each they'd make a fortune and we'd be happy but no lol instead they put out mario 3D all stars with no mario galaxy 2 + as a limited release lol i just don't understand
The only way I think that Mother 3 can get some form of release outside of Japan is if Nintendo remakes the Mother trilogy from the ground up and rework things.
Mario RPG I can kind of sort of in a way possibly comprehend because Square has partial rights to it but Earthbound being absent from the Switch is silly
I have the feeling we might be getting something big (remake or something) because there is no way they just wouldn't put it on the online service... Hoping for E3 to surprise me hahaha
I think since they’re not struggling financially they’re not pulling out all the stops. The only time they really pulled all the stops and were financially successful was the snes. Not to say Wii or switch have bad games they don’t but generally they only give what the fans want when they’re struggling. Looking past some Wii U decisions
Hopefully someday. Since nothing else can be done with the series without Shigesato Itoi I'd like to think that it's inevitable even if we don't see it for like 30 years.
What if the Mother series just kinda popped into existence and Ape just kinda put their name on it and called it a day. Would make sense why the 3rd one took so long to finish if they couldnt get whatever mysterious rift gave it to them to threepeat
Earthbound is the only RPG I've ever really enjoyed and had to play over and over. I wish I could get into other RPGs but it truly was the only one that's ever really hooked me.
Earthbound fans what does it take to get into the series? I've tried 3 times to get into Earthbound but i've giving up every time because of how frustrating it is. Should i just try the fan translation of mother 3? Edit: gonna give the fan translation a go for mother 3- thanks for the input!
It’s definitely a game that takes a lot of patience. My suggestion would be to try your best to see it through to the end and if you still aren’t enjoying, it just might not be your thing. It certainly is a different game than what most people are comfortable with. While I think it’s an amazing game, I know not everyone will think that. You don’t even have to take my suggestion into account. Just do whatever you feel is right for you.
I found that the fan translation of Mother 3 is the best place to start, as the story and gameplay is more engaging as soon as the game starts. It also has a more forgiving learning curve for newcomers. Also, if you are still having trouble with the difficulty, Mother 3 being only accessible on an emulator means having access to savestates, if that is your thing.
Take the time to Grind to level 12 in Onett The rest of the game will scale properly after, with the only big wall after being that you have to grind up Paula when you get her
The copyright troubles was because Nintendo doesn’t technically own earthbound/mother. Series creator shigesato itoi, would need to give permission first
It really did. Nintendo was in fact weird about Earthbound on the Switch. Never did I say in the video or title that the first two games would never come. The entire video is talking about how they will come but trying to grasp Nintendo’s backwards logic of adding so many obscure games that they had to pay for before adding the first two Earthbound titles.
I remember when it came out and we all knew about it because it had the GIANT box. We all wanted to try it but it had the big box because it came along with the game strategy guide and the price reflected that so it was hard for anyone to talk the parents into buying a game SNES game for $70
If Nintendo does the limited release treatment with Earthbound/MOTHER 3 Imma skip it, since I have the ROM's anyway. If they're on sale indefinitely after being put up then maybe I'll buy them.
I just got to the end of earthbound beginnings after spending a couple dozen hours hunting down the 8 melodies. The cactus with a face is the dumbest one... That games design is legit evil with how big the world is and how well hidden the exact things you need to progress are, and how most late game stuff wipes your party in a single turn... Still a great experience. Has all the same humor and similar story. Earthbound is still perfect in every way and fleshes out the characters a lot

Even if they sold them 15 bucks each they'd make a fortune and we'd be happy but no lol instead they put out mario 3D all stars with no mario galaxy 2 + as a limited release lol i just don't understand
2:44 Lucky I'm one of the 6 people who bought a Wii U during it's lifespan
The only way I think that Mother 3 can get some form of release outside of Japan is if Nintendo remakes the Mother trilogy from the ground up and rework things.
I've always wondered why I've never seen any earthbound content outside of the original earthbound in smash bros
Guess you can say that Nintendo's being
*sus*
All I want is Earthbound and Mario RPG on the switch but at least we have ncw and two seperate tennis games
Mario RPG I can kind of sort of in a way possibly comprehend because Square has partial rights to it but Earthbound being absent from the Switch is silly
@@CameronAllOneWord Nintendo is the richest video game company around just buy mario rpg rights back already
Today was the day
I don’t know much, but I think the reason why they haven’t localized the game may be due to the fan translation on PC, which is excellent.
Still dreaming of some kind of Earthbound stopmotion-like remake that will never happen…. :(
That'd be great
Like Link's Awakening? Yeah that would be perfect
@@geschnitztekiste4111 kinda but with a more clay-like feel to it
I have the feeling we might be getting something big (remake or something) because there is no way they just wouldn't put it on the online service... Hoping for E3 to surprise me hahaha
I really hope so. If it just pops up on the service like 4 years in it’ll be pretty anticlimactic
Don’t give me hope
Stop
well, at least it's here :D
I think since they’re not struggling financially they’re not pulling out all the stops. The only time they really pulled all the stops and were financially successful was the snes. Not to say Wii or switch have bad games they don’t but generally they only give what the fans want when they’re struggling. Looking past some Wii U decisions
I'd love to see them release the trilogy with updated graphics that look similar to the screenshot shown at 4:57
Hopefully someday. Since nothing else can be done with the series without Shigesato Itoi I'd like to think that it's inevitable even if we don't see it for like 30 years.
I’d be happy if we’d just have 1 3D Earthbound game like Super Mario Sunshine for example or a 3D remake, after all Punch out got a 3D remake for Wii
What if the Mother series just kinda popped into existence and Ape just kinda put their name on it and called it a day.
Would make sense why the 3rd one took so long to finish if they couldnt get whatever mysterious rift gave it to them to threepeat
*Il Vento d'oro literally starts playing
I can’t resist
Happy Mothers Day. Posted a Mother Box Cover on my Facebook today.
ITS FINALLY HERE!!!
I want them to do a collectors edition version of Mother 3 on Switch like how they did for Fire Emblem (NES). That one be an instant pre-order for me
Earthbound is the only RPG I've ever really enjoyed and had to play over and over. I wish I could get into other RPGs but it truly was the only one that's ever really hooked me.
Try Persona 4 and 5
That Jojo 8 bit song where though
i want a re-release even though i can't get a Switch
Take the time to Grind to level 12 in Onett
The rest of the game will scale properly after, with the only big wall after being that you have to grind up Paula when you get her
The copyright troubles was because Nintendo doesn’t technically own earthbound/mother.
Series creator shigesato itoi, would need to give permission first
This video aged like a fine wine
It really did. Nintendo was in fact weird about Earthbound on the Switch. Never did I say in the video or title that the first two games would never come. The entire video is talking about how they will come but trying to grasp Nintendo’s backwards logic of adding so many obscure games that they had to pay for before adding the first two Earthbound titles.
Imo you are one of the only nintendo youtuber who make sense. I honestly mean that need way more sub.
Thank ya very much!
Everywhere I go a jojo reference follows me
It can't be helped
Oh look they did it
Finally after being weird about it for years. Better late than never though!
I can't wait for you to try Mother 3
@@CameronAllOneWord I live in America though. I'm guessing i have to get it shipped from Japan?
I'm playing the first two on the switch online version which gives me NES and SNES games. Sadly Nintendo refuses to acknowledge mother 3's existence. Maybe I'll find a way to play it someday. Do you know how?
@@smolchild1057 I live in America too I bought a bootleg copy of a fan translation. If Nintendo ever translates it themselves they'll censor it heavily so I'd actually recommend this one.
7:16 Cursed image
Bro you look/sound like a bootleg Weird al Yankovic.
Jokes aside great video! : D
Well it’s here now
Thankfully but I don’t know why Nintendo had to be so weird about it
0:54 umm???
Game must've glitched lol
@@CameronAllOneWord ah my bad
are u saying they couldnt do an hd remaster like links awakening but for the mother series?
They could do that but I wouldn't want anything changed because Itoi's magic
@@CameronAllOneWord and iwata's. i dont think much would be changed and its not like the clay artstyle doesnt already exist for the mother series. the biggest change would probably be the music
1. They could be working on a remake
(highly doubt it lol)
2. Itoi has something to do with this
It’s not Itoi, use your brain.
The 8 bit sounding Yu Yu Hakusho was worth subscribing for 😊
Not wrong about the original Fire Emblem game, even as a fan of FE I was only really interested because I haven’t played the game…but like a remake of the game existed on the DS and was available on the Wii U virtual console
I love how I hear yu yu hakushos theme song on here
I can't resist
We will see news about Mother come E3 2021. It may be big, it may be minor, but all I can tell you is that they will be talking about Mother.
Loved the little retro Smile Bomb
I can't resist using it as often as possible
@@CameronAllOneWord
I don’t blame you, I love that song ❤️
Hope, pray, and cross your fingers. I got a good feeling about this E3. 🙌🙏🤞
Same
Don't get your hopes up too high! Maybe a little though
Yes
@@CameronAllOneWord I’ll try not to! ☝️😬
The wait is over guys
earthbound was never invested in, in the first place.
when it was new, within several blockbusters around me, there was 1 copy between them all.
I'm sure it would have been bigger if availability was more of a thing, but it wasn't.
almost 10 years I ask for this game for Christmas, but no stores ever had it.
Was the Mr Bungle line a reference to Scott Cramer?
This Video Aged Well :)
