If you are not coming back in another half an hour, I'm quite pretty sure that this man would ask the staff come over, checking your stuff then look for you. If you still not show up, shopping mall as well as police would be informed. They will then check the cctv, disperse staff to look for you in every corner until you are found. People will care about your safety instead of your valuables. That's the Chinese way in caring others. Hope you enjoy your stay. 😊

This experiment you have done will be about the same in at least other East Asian countries like Japan, South Korea and the SE Asian country Singapore. These countries also happen to have a lot of CCTVs. But CCTVs is not the only preventive reason, I think the quality of the locals in that region as well. There are quite many CCTVs in London and New York too (esp on a per capita basis), but I bet you may not be so lucky. But why not test my statement by putting your laptop in a London or NY cafe in the open space? It's be interesting to know how it turns out. Still, even in those 4 countries above, low crime doesn't mean no crime. It's better to be safe than sorry.

As a Chinese person, I would like to point out:
Firstly, the living standards of most Chinese people are decent enough that the general population sees no need to resort to illegal means to obtain goods. Secondly, due to the widespread deployment of cameras and the implementation of a cashless society, criminal activities have almost nowhere to hide. Law enforcement can easily retrieve surveillance footage to track criminal activities and use legal procedures to obtain payment records to identify suspects, making it difficult for criminals to evade legal sanctions. Lastly, the cost of committing a crime is extremely high. Once someone has a criminal record, it is not only difficult for them to find employment within state-owned or institutional organizations, but their children also lose the eligibility to take civil service exams, which is a severe blow for those who value stable government positions.

As someone who’s lived in China for many years, I’ve got to tell the truth. In China, people usually don’t steal valuable items like computers, phones, laptops, and wallets because it’s considered a crime (theft becomes a criminal offense when the financial value is over 1000 yuan, which is about 130 US dollars). However, things like lighters, tissues, ballpoint pens, phone chargers, and USB cables often go missing in Chinese offices. One reason is that they’re not expensive enough to be considered a crime. Another reason is that everyone kind of assumes these are communal items

Also, as soon as the older gentleman sat down, right away, a younger man sat right next to your table. Because the young man knew the Mac didn't belong to the older gentleman. Actually, these 2 very honest good citizens and gentlemen were keeping eyes on your Mac, and they knew for sure the owner would come back. For those who haven't been to China, overall, the society in China is very secure. Is at par if not better than Japan, Singapore, and / or better than the many Western society

I am sure you are right. That said, every country has criminals, and China is no exception. So, one not-so-bright boy did one test in a rather expensive area doesn't mean shit.

@@MrAlexCage yeah, left more questions than answers
This type of test or Social Experiment, whatever you call it, isn't a good idea in general because you are testing an assumption by creating a crime opportunity. So, only test those people you suspect to be criminals, especially don't test your loved ones; never test your girlfriend or wife, not even your father or mother, because you may very well find out the truth is that they don't love you. You assume the test objects are potential thieves. Otherwise, you trust them. WTF are you test for? Even better, you are a judge, jury, and executioner because you are playing god. Besides, what does one test say? How many of these tests do you need to conduct to draw a meaningful conclusion? FYI, the American police used to set up speed traps to catch people speeding. Later, the US passed a law forbidding the police to create a crime opportunity to catch criminals.
