I used to keep my door unlock when living in Shanghai😎

Real things that happened around me: 1) I live in a "very safe" area in Silicon Valley, California. I sent my son to their high school for an event on the weekend. I met another parent outside the activity room and talked about ten minutes. When I returned to the parking lot, the window of this parent's van was smashed, and the work computer and some items inside were stolen. 2) My colleague went to San Francisco for a meeting. After the meeting, he went to a restaurant for lunch on the way back to the company, and then tragedy struck. The window of his car was smashed, and the work computer and six devices and other items in the trunk were stolen.😭😡

Many Westerners believe many ideas/designs and Intellectual Properties are stolen by China and mass produced and that the gov't fakes most data to the point that it's not worth listening to. The Chinese gov't (Xi), makes all major decisions and cares little for the people. It's showing more now than ever.

Although China is slowly returning to its glorious moment as a great power in history, China still positions itself as a developing country and still has a long way to go before becoming a truly developed country. But I believe that in a few years, China will become a developed country. To meet the standards of developed countries defined by China, at least China’s own standards of developed countries must be much higher than those of European and American countries!

To add to that I remember my own experience 20+ years ago when I first came to the US as a student. I left my purse with valuables on the desk of a library and didn’t ever expect I would ever see it again but actually claimed it back from lost and found. At that time I was also amazed and felt it was a different world as it was never going to happen back in china at that time. Things have changed so drastically over the last 20 plus years and sadly for the US, it’s not in the right direction😢.

I’m a Chinese American and last Nov I went back to Shanghai for the first time after 5 years not being able to go with all the shutdowns in pandemic. My childhood best friend drove me to the area near the bunds to show me the new version of it that I’m no longer familiar with. She found a street parking spot and when we walked away from the car I saw she left her laptop in the back seat, easily visible from outside. As a person living in the notorious San Francisco Bay Area I found this unacceptably disturbing and unsafe and asked her to go pick up the laptop asap. She looked at me as if I was from a different universe and was completely puzzled: what are you talking about. Well, after all it was probably true that I was indeed from a different universe to some extent 😢

The Chinese motto says 仓廪实而知礼节 衣食足而知荣辱 which can be interpreted that the people is polite and civilized when the barn is filled with cereal, the people knows the accolade and guilty when the food and cloths are sufficient

China is safe in general, but not absolutely. I lost my water bottle on the high-speed train and never got it back. Although the staff helped me look for it, but couldn't find it, sad... I blame myself, of course

They do steal but rarely, the culture taught people to have joy to work and earn things, not taking stuff for free because thats meaningless and you got extra time doing nothing which isnt fun either
