Jorfden it is.
My mind still goes to Jorfden tbh.
Hi Jorfden, great content ❤️
Heh... I've never seen 'Jordan' spelled this way and can't find the variation on any baby name site (I was curious). Either his parents were bad spellers or it really is Jorfdan.;-) If it is a big deal (seems to be since he has that little disclaimer every video) I would legally just change it.
Considering it's word origin, in Greek it is Iordanes, Latin Jordanus, Hebrew Yarden,, Arabic Al-Urdunn, Italian Giordano, Jordão in Portuguese, Jordán in Spanish, Jordan in German, Jordaan Dutch, Jourdain in French, etc....
Yeah I'd go with if it was a family name someone just screwed up the spelling because it doesn't seem like anybody every inserted a 'ph' into Jordan. Or it is Jorfdan;-)
MrCSeiberlin lol, exactly!
"THE PH IS SILENT!!!!"
Me: Yorf-don
Yorfdon sounds like the name of a Gnome or Tiefling or so
first 48 seconds made me laugh.
I'm wondering who is pissing him off enough to have him yammer on about silent letters in the first place. Like its a simple concept who needs it explained?
I laughed with the spelling of W-H-A-T...
But why tho? 😄
I honestly thought your intro was going to be about how the Mh in Mhzentul is silent.
I thought the ph stood for player handbook which is considerably light on lore, and with this being a lore channel it was fitting. But now it's extra unique
It's actually pronounced Mul. The H, Z, E, N, T are silent.
Jorphdan, that was hilarious. Well, you can't give anyone a hard time pronouncing "sherbet" as "sherbert" because if your name can have silent letters why not invisible ones? This very example was pointed out to me in reference to my last name when I was being pedantic. :)
The silent PH is supposed to be silent and accentuated with a rising in sounding after the D to A sound. It's in many northern Indo European languages and Siberian dialects.
"if the ph wasn't silent my name would be JorFdan" impeccable logics sir.
I had to spell it out for the people ;)
IDK why, but I always say Jord-Phan in my head, despite knowing it's Jordan.
everyone does!
Admit, the ph is in your name because your parents are pranksters and knew you would have to explain it forever and they found that idea hilarious 😂😂
Find the Path is a spell in 5th edition as well, its 6th level
Can you make a video about Xanathar? I heard that many beholders actually assumed the name Xanathar. I'd like to hear more.
I talk about him in my Undermountain video!
ua-cam.com/video/H6xVUtRBeMQ/v-deo.html
@@Jorphdan I think its more like you mentioned him rather than talking about him. I'm quite sure there's more to Xanathar's than that, and what's the deal with the goldfish, what the thieves' guild has accomplished, ect.
This was the best intro of ALL TIME!!!
(Jorf) "Whisper is a cool name."
(me 3 years ago) "I gonna name my Tiefling Warlock, 'Whispers Of Ash'."
Magic items lying in piles, unused by their owners? Nah. I always liked to determine treasure ahead of time and have that gnoll draw a flame tongue as combat begins. It really spices up the battle!
Gelbadaya Sneech I mean yes, but NO.
Hi, my name is THOMAS. The “h” is silent.
I insist on pronouncing the H.
Were would we be witout tem?
If you were Greek it wouldn't be. :P
my names Hruaia.
no oh the letters are silent.
At 2:35, that cat side-quest poster was funny. 😄
Thanks Jorfden!
I’m really glad you remind me about the silent ph, I honestly forget all the time🤷🏻♀️
Oh, my, that intro totally killed me, hahahaha
Beautiful opening. Made my day.
Great video jorf!
I always thought the PH was silent because the Player’s Handbook didn’t have the lore from you were presenting.
The silent PH will always bug me, but I'll still enjoy your videos. 😂
Sunkensees agreed
Thanks Jorphdan ! I love your videos since they seem to be an excellent way of catching up on the Forgotten Realms since last I played. Have you thought about doing a video about the Pools of Radiance? How about the city of Phlan ?
Pool of Radiance was a game yeah? Maybe, haven't thought about it nor have I played it.
City of Phlan!? I'll add it to my list thanks!
It was, and I am a little confused here. I thought the Pools of Radiance were apart of the Forgotten Realms canon, but I can find little reference to it.
Nice summary!
The intro section felt like a Vsauce video :D
Also great content as always
steal like an artist 😅
if you parents didn't want you to be called Jorfden, they'd spell your name Jordan.
Takara Hayashi agreed
Hello Jorfden
You know that when i first started watching you there were a few times when you didn't say the opening blurb about the ph and I think I made some comment about it every time. So when I saw this, it was magical.
I forgot all about about Flamsterd's Flamestrike, which, as a kid, I misread and thought was "Flameterd's Flamestrike."
Commenting here on the last Saturday Morning DnD Show - really liked the last podast particularly discussion on the DnD live event.
I think WotC are right to try and bring more people in; it's right that they have a 'Marketing' event, but I think it's also important to give back to the community.
Would be better maybe to have a kind of 'DnD Con' with invites to community members, as then WotC can have their community event AND still be able to have their 'reach out' moments.
Awesome vid!
Thanks!
There was actually an alternative alphabet designed for English, called Shavian, that fixes issues like silent letters lol. Just thought you might be interested in that. Great vid :)
My hypothesis was that you have your PHD and thought it would be neat to put it in your name, which it would be.
I think it is a PhD in a field which doesn't give him a job, so he can't apply his expertise...which is why his PhD is silent.
Now your name will forever be Jorfden the lore master. Lol
I once convinced a group of children that there were 26 silent q’s in front of every word in the English language, and people just didn’t use them because it would take too much time.
I'm pretty sure that intro caused me to ascend to a higher state of consciousness.
Jorf dan sounds like a cool viking name for a skald
Thank you
my next D&D character will now be Jorfdan
I thought he had like a phd and wanted to flex it but "subtly"
I thought this was turning into a ep of Vsauce there for a second but I got a PSA and then some geek stuff, not too shabby Jorf!
I'm glad I'm not alone.
Nice history lesson and good information
This can be used to start a whole campaign.
For future peoples, since his opening was so snarky and unhelpful: the "PH" was his attempt to stand out on the internet/an inside joke with his real life friends. It is not the legal spelling of his name. He spoke about this on the live stream. You can go watch them all to find it.
ORRRR we call call you Jorp ! Or even Jorph (Jorf), for short !
Alright then....
IT'S JORPHDAN TIME!! TARRASQUE-A-SAURAS!!
And now I have the starting point for coming up with the next campaign. Thank you!
As the comedian Eddie Izzard said "I say HERBS and not 'ERBS, why? Because there's a Fu$%!# "H" in it!"
I paused the video after that into for about 5 minutes to contemplate life
it's heavy man...
I did the same thing!
Well don't contemplate for too long because the longer the Icon of Sin stays on Earth, the stronger it becomes!
we have seen this in GoT with "Ser (Sir)" and "Maester (Master or Magister)" - words changed a little so it sound "fantasyisty" (eek!) but still similar enough that we understand what they mean when we read it
I was always curious is that PH was a birth name or added later like many young people do to differentiate themselves. Regardless the videos are always entertaining! Thanks for posting another interesting video.
...........I have twenty appendages......twenty....*smiles knowingly*
That’s the most badass description of your name, period flat I’ve ever heard. Well done mate. 👍
Such a great video. For grammar and for dnd. I love learning of these magical artifacts. The shroud of mystery is so interesting.
None of Mhzentul's rings, nor his spellbook, are artifacts which is why these items were not presented in the artifact section of Volo's Guide to all Things Magical. They are unique magical rings and a unique spellbook, nothing more.
It would be difficult to bring them into a later edition of the game since each edition has steadily lost the richness and diversity of spells that these rings contained. At best one could create an altered simulacrum that really only shares the rings name rather than the abilities of the original rings and concepts, though I suspect one could get close with a few of the rings. The current edition does not resemble or function like the edition these rings were borne from, nor does it have the diversity. This makes it difficult to import some of the earlier edition magical items.
I thought the PH was silent to make a pun for PHD
And if all that crafting were done in 5e, he'd have had to have started as a small child and worked non-stop the rest of his life to craft like half of those rings XD
Oooookay I have some new campaign ideas!
I thought it was because you had a PHD. JorPHDan.
*shrugs*
So I’m gonna he suing these in my next campaign
Well I just got 5d10,000 ideas for my campaign. Thanks!!!
Just starting your series, its gonna be a long road ahead
Welcome! Have fun! I'd recommend the playlists, they put the lore in a good order.
I LOVED YOUR OPENING!!! One of the BEST opening EVER! Clever, entertaining, creative..... THANK YOU! Anyone else agree?
Does anyone know the source for the image at 5:16? I just thought it was really cool and i cant find it anywhere else
All you NEED to to is say my name is Jordan...That's all you have to do and we understand.
P.H.D. in esoteric D&D lore. #MysterySolved.
My name is Voldemort. My whole name is silent.
Oh Yorfdon you silly you.
The beginning is so funny to me. Many of the "silent letters" you mention aren't silent in German :P
Germany is leaps ahead of the United States ;)
@@Jorphdan Or behind. English once pronounced all these letters but stopped progressively during the Middle to Early Modern English period. In that sense we're probably behind but that does not necessarily have to be a bad thing :D
that intro though, lmao
nice vid, what vid editor do you use? vegas?
Adobe Premiere!
Wait a minute, you can find a ring like this in bg 1, right? I may be confused, but it seems to be one of them.
Jorphdan why would your parents do such a thing? Creating conversations of misunderstanding about the sound of your name. Imagine you in kinder garden telling the teacher how your name is writen for you get it right and being disregarded as wrong and laughed at in class.
kids can be so cruel
I thought it was some kind of chemistry joke about acid /bases
The ph doesn't have to be silent. The j can be almost a y sound, if you go a Viking route with it. Lol.
But where did the “PH” come from or was just created for the first time in this use case?
after that intro, I really thought the mh in Mhzentul is silent
Do you have any info on the holy Avenger
Seriously considering naming a kitten whisper.
Sounds like a solid kitten name :D
Best opening 😂 keeo up the good work dude!
Thanks! 😁
You are better than every other lore UA-camr
any chance of a lore video on Icewind dale and the ten towns?
This is in the immediate future! Working on a few videos about the frozen north :D
cool
The ring of night.. gives night vision.
Awesome little tidbit of history there. I'd love to see it brought into a modern game. Too bad I'm playing Pathfinder right now.
And I always thought he said "The PH assailant"
Misunderstood. It's Jorphdan with the Jordan silent, right?
f-ckin binging these man...
I honestly thought it was just a cultural thing, i got a friend named john but its spelled jahn, and my kids named Alrik but its pronounced Allrik. just figured it was a cultural/regional way of its spelling. We learn something new every day (if its a good day) :)
as a non-native speaker, when i was younger i was told my name is pronounced a-arrow. like a-aron. good thing i know more english than they do. haha.
So, I haven't *really* played much since 3rd-ish edition... Is there that much difference in the rules for stuff like this that you just can't drop an item in as originally written?
Attunement is new, so consider whether it should be attuned or not.
Okay like I understand why the ph is silent what I don't understand is why who named you didn't spell it Jordan (as is the only spelling I've seen before you)...so you could get a keychain or something...
I mean, if you're of nordic descent it could be pronounced as (Yourfdan) since it seems like J's often get pronounced as Y's
Virgin UA-cam viewers: Jorfdan
Me, a UA-cam chad: Jorp-h’dan
That's my Dune name.
Ok Jorfdan
So, you don’t have a PhD Jorphdan??
That's why Stewie Griffin says... Cool WHHIP
Wait. Why is there a ph in the first place?
