Some corrections to this lore from the same original sources: It just doesn't contain the essence of Myrkul, but the fallen god himself inhabits the item corrupting all who wear it. The crown did not go through some alterations, it was destroyed by Khelben in freeing Laeral from its influence over her that drove her mad. The pieces resided in a safe in Blackstaff tower and when the god Myrkul was destroyed during the Avatar Crisis, what was left of the god's essence merged with the pieces and rebuilt the crown. It is now an intelligent artifact with that being of Myrkul. Lesser Shadowrath (not wraith) "appear as totally black, skeletons with only their eyesockets aglow with red, deadly energy." Greater Shadowrath (not wraith) "Greater shadowraths retain both the intelligence they possessed during life and their general appearance, including clothing, armor, equipment, and so on. However, they have no eyes, internal organs, or bones. Instead, they are filled and animated by negative material energy. This crackling black energy is visible in the creatures' eyes, open mouths, and any open wounds." Mythallar are quasi-magic generators that are lethal to the touch. Without a mythallar, all quasi-magical items do not function and demonstrate no powers. Quasi-magical were more plentiful in Netheril than magical items as they were easier to construct and produce. Garagos the reaver is a separate competing god from Tempus, though WotC probably butchered their relationship. He competed against and lost to Tempus as the main god of war. However, Garagos is also tasked with destroying the Dragonking should he ever escape from his artifact prison as well.
@@labibsaud8064 You're still bound to Orcus. Every undead is bound to Orcus, at least a little bit. They can all feel a little bit of his will eating at their mind, all day, every day. It's part of the reason undead go evil and insane so often, and also just a genuienly horrific bit of lore.
Oh you're right, this is a really cool artifact for the bbeg to have, it could give some really fun story to play through after actually defeating him, or perhaps a really fun reword for players who enjoy an evil campaign
In my game, the Drow Matriarch Olorae of House Tanor'thal was given the lich Nhyris D' Hothek by Halaster, who had Imprisoned the Yuan-ti in a coffin. Olorae offered to trade the lich and the Crown of Horns to Laeral Silverhand, open lord of Waterdeep in exchange for the release of her son Elan Tanor'thal who had been captured by the Heroes of the Dragon Vault during their raid on Halaster's Dweomercore academy. This was part of Halaster's plan to discredit the Lords of Waterdeep. When the exchange was to be made at Blackstaff Tower, Elan Tanor'thal stabbed his mother in the belly and loudly proclaimed his rejection of Lolth and his allegiance to the Goddess of Night, Shar and her Army of the Night appeared and attacked Laeral, Olorae and the Heroes under a city-wide shroud of magical darkness created by Shar's Vampire High Preistess Keresta Delvingstone using her Divine Intervention feature. As Laeral Silverhand used the Spellfire to disrupt the shroud of night, the Heroes battled the Shadow Assassins of the Cult of Shar. Then the Lich Nhyris managed to place the Crown of Horns on Laeral Silverhand, who promptly melted into a pile of ruby dusted snow -- a simulacrum! Without the Crown, Nhyris collapsed into a pile of black dust. The Drow and the Heroes managed to battle off the Army of the Night with the aid of the Blackstaff Tower Wizards, but Elan Tanor'thal (actually revealed by a gem of true seeing to be the Dweomercore Archmage Karstis) managed to get away. As all this went on, three huge explosions rocked Waterdeep harbor. The Army of the Night had used the Crown of Horns as a distraction to steal most of Zardoz Zord's blasting powder. Zord's identity as Jarlaxle was revealed in the aftermath as he was severely wounded by the explosion that destroyed his ships. Now the Army of the Night plots from the Vanrakdoom, deep within Undermountain. Their plan is to destroy the Temple of the Moon goddess Selune with their newly acquired explosives. But once again, the mysterious, spooky Shadowdusk family steps forward to defend Waterdeep from the folly of it's heroes and leaders, as they did when Halaster's Red Tarrasque battled the Walking Statues of the City of Splendors. They offer the Heroes a secret path through the Undermountain into the secret lair of the Army of the Night. Will the Heroes of the Dragon Vault prevail against the Shadow Assassins of Shar, Goddess of Night? Find out in the next installment of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage!
To be fair, you can destroy most things by feeding them to a Tarrasque. This actually makes some sense though, if you think about it. It's an artifact associated with death that turns you into a lich, and one of the Tarrasque's chief abilities is how it ressurects itself from the dead.
@@Jorphdan ah. thank you. i thought that you'd just gain all of the Lich Abilities if you use the crown a lot. although imagine a lv20 Paladin of Myrkul with 9th level Wizard Spells and Paralysis Touch
I think I have an idea of how I can work the crown into my campaign's BBEG, though it will be no easy feat considering the way I've been designing the abomination.
Hey actually had a question as a first time dm and player lol. Is it possible to use this item in another setting or a homebrew game? And if so am I able to tweak its lore just abit ?
Question: What would happen if someone would use the crown of horns, the ring of winter, and the crystal shard SIMULTANEOUSLY? Because that would be interesting to check out -DD
What would happen if someone would use the helm of opposite alignment alongside the crown of horns? Would that make the user always defer to neutral good? (Edit: Nevermind, no idiot would ever put on both a helmet and a crown)
@@zev-gb8dk Yeah. No, that won't happen. Why even should I be lawful good to begin with? Chances are, if I am searching for this crown, there won't be an alignment shift. Also, WOOOOOSH!
So team up with the god of the dead and craft a robot with dimensional interference technology built in so the crown doesn't just teleport away and have that retrieve the crown and present it to the god of the dead and have the world be rid of this artifact once and for all.

Take a shot everytime there is an archmage mentioned in FR's lore
I died of alcohol poisoning :(

Take another shot everytime the archmage is Netherese

A good way to become a lich without needing to perform the ritual.

My thoughts exactly. One of the few ways to go Lich ethically. Just put it on and wait or spam Ray of Undeath on a bunch of bandits or something.

My villain's already got the book of vile darkness and both the hand and eye of vecna. However I guess more is always better lol.
if your players beat him theyll have all those items
There was a cool villainous prestige class only available to someone wearing the crown. I assume Nhyris is following that path right now.

Never a dull topic.
Love your videos Jorphdan. I always find them entertaining.
Thanks so much!!
You actually followed through! You’re awesome man!
nice item, great vid !!! It reminded me of that wand of lichdom in one of the Drizzt books.
Easy solution: invite 100 liches to a Crown of Horns party. Watch them fight. Pick off the last one. Sweep up the crown and lich bones. Baddabing!
I'm liking these artefact vids!
Thanks!
