I did this 20 years ago as a kid .tuning weihrauch 77s fac to 20 ft lb .my finding is no4 is contradicted by no 3 . All skirys blow out thats how they seal the air behind them , as for head size thats why theyre choked . MY findings are weight and head shape determines all , regardless of choked or unchoked . Crosman premier lights . .177 can hit a pellet time after time at 50 meters at 20 ft lb thats 1100 foot a second in a hw 97k barrel . Thetes maybe 3 pellets that perform like this theyre between 7.9 grain and 9.5 grain . The old hw77s did benefit from taking an inch off the barrel then re cap the end up to 18 ft lb 980 foot per second with a 9.9 grain bisley magnum . ALSO dont clean your barrel so much , thats why it took 25 shots to start grouping , you have to lead your barrel for it to be accurate , a good coating of lead is self lubricating and slightly resizes your barrels bore diameter . Hence it grouping better after said 25 shots . The only problem these days is pellets have a higher alloy mix making them harder and lighter , dont clean your barrel out , and dont use plastic skirted pellets they contain solicone , when you switch back to lead they will go all over the show .untill you scrub out the residue and re lead the barrel

Thanks for the tip about not continually cleaning your air rifle barrels when you’re using the same pellet as they basically self clean the barrel.

They don't even leave much lead behind unless the pellets going over 1200fps

Wow, impressive demo. I took a completely diferent approach, but we both ended up in very similar places.
I use a Gamo Bigcat .177 and the Walther Talon in .22.
Imo, crossman makes the trashiest pellets. Even thier highest priced pellets have way too much left over mold flashing left on them. The only reason to use crossman is for fun plinking.
Upgraded to H&N domed( they carry the widest variety of subtle sizes, 1/100). I found that the 4.51 (.177, 8.64gr) worked best in very cold weather, and the 4.52's worked best at 100` or warmer temps. Similar results for the Talon with 5.52 for cold weather, and the 5.54 for very hot temps. (Working best=maximun raw muzzle velocity)
Basically i chronographed all the available size variants for each rifle, through the course of a year. Too tight of pellets DROPPED velocity quite noticably, as did the too small. In the end i had two sizes for both rifles, winter rounds and summer. Only a couple 100ths either way made dramatic diferences. So i first figured out the best sizes to get maximun pressure and velocy, then i adjusted the pellet weights to slow them back down to the more stable 900-999 fps range.
Using the barrel twist, i deduced that for both my rifles, the optimum velocity was actually only 900-999 fps. Faster, and the pellets begin demonstrating the coriolis effect at the more extreme ranges, 30 yd+. There is such a thing as TOO fast a rotation.
If you think about it, a barrel with a 1/12 twist, will rotate a projectile travelling at 1000 fps= 1000 rpS which we all can multiply by 60 second, and we NOW have a projectile rotating a 60k. rpM!
No lead object should be able to hold together under that kind of spinning. So even the much milder 1/24 twist still = 30k.rpM.
Bottom line is, just because you CAN launch a pellet supersonic, it will never improve accuracy.
Junk the cheap ammo if you want accuracy. And dont expect accuracy at supersonic velocities(1123+fps)...
For what it is worth, i target pingpong balls at 100 ft., freehand. For small airguns that is satisfactory for all the small game i hunt.
    Keep up the good work...

The pellet skirt is made to expand into the lands and groove on firing, it seals the gases and spins the pellet, head size should just touch the lands, so no it doesn't bob up and down in the barrel.

great vid, i have been shooting airguns for 45+ years. i have recently started using a pcp rifle. always had springers before. now i have a kral puncher .177 full wood coz im a lefty. i have found accupell with most accuracy on most guns 7.9 grain. but at long range say 45 yrds the pellet wonders all over the place . so after this video i will try heavier pellets.

Just so you know l am not new to fire arms. l am 52 years old. l have hunted with 300 weabeathery magnums. l have hunted with top of the line bows. Yet still this pcp air rifle sport intregies me more than anything in recent memory. It's so Kool that once you get past the initial investment, that you can enjoy shooting at a very low cost compared to other shooting sports. Also to be a member of a great family of people that just want to enjoy the sport. This whole experience has been a lot of fun and to me that's what it's all about. I learn a lot from channels like this and appreciate you all. Again God bless and thank you.

I have always loved long range shooting but where I live it is almost impossible to find a range over 100 yards. The air rifle allows me to accomplish the same principle as long rang in my back yard for only a fraction of the cost. it is cheap to shoot, I dont have to drive to a range, Im not making a bunch of noise, and I dont have to worry about my pellet flying a mile away and hitting anything.

Twist rate also depends on velocity. Lower velocity projectiles require a quicker twist rate. 1:10 is quicker than 1:16. Heavier pellets tend to be traveling slower. As you tune your gun, keeping the velocity below the speed of sound increases accuracy. All pellets become less stable when pushed too fast. That is why ultra lite pellets do not shoot well from high powered air guns.
When long range shooting, heavier pellets are less deflected by cross winds. Usually have less deviation in velocity from shot to shot, so tend to be more accurate despite having a more pronounced trajectory. For punching paper or targets at long known ranges the heavier slower pellets may be preferred. But hunting brings different priorities. A flatter shooting even if a little less accurate pellet may be your choice. The amount of energy your airgun your gun produces with a chosen pellet, and the amount of penetration a pellet gets from your gun, may all effect your choice of pellet.
Anyways, there are a number of reasons to pick a certain pellet, just test and pick the pellets that work best for you.
Example:. I have a Hatsan 22 that I use Barracuda pellets for long range and heavier game (squirrels, possums) and JSB for rabbits, Crossman for rats. Neat reason for these 3 pellets, they all hit at the same POI. Why JSB for rabbits? Because the Barracuda pellets just pass through. The lighter JSB pellets do too, but leave a larger hole, thus are dumping more energy into the target. I use the Crossman for alot of plunking too. Why, because they are cheap and readily available.

I have a Walther LGU. The barrel is fixed, which is the reason I chose this rifle (cost $400) I had heard break barrel is often more inaccurate (because the barrel is in a different position each shot). Turns out IMO this is 100% correct, this rifle is scary accurate with good pellets. I had the Bejamin marauder and i could not hit broad side of barn with it even at 15'. Also i did everything i could to maintain the seals, always keeping air in the gun, as soon as the warranty ran out though the gun started leaking! Too much trouble. The new cheap high pressure compressors are a huge step forward but also a whole new complicated thing to maintain that is NOT your gun. I think they need to design an entirely new type of seal that will last the life of the gun, too much fiddling with pcp guns now!

Thanks for the video. It was knowledgeble. Not sure if that is a word but it is. I took the manufactures advice and tried it. I also researched my pellet rifle for the "best pellet" used in my rifle. not all pellets are made the same and this goes for rifles as well. I did what was suggested to me from the squirrel hunter advised to me. he said to try varrious pellets and see what pellet is best for my break barrel 1200 fps pellet rifle. So far it is the premier 7.4 grain hollow point pellet at 15.00 CND per 500 tin and the premier destroyer, even cheaper pellets. I kow it is a very light pellet but I blast through a 3/4 inch plywood at 20 meters. That is amazing for how light weight it is. I yet have to try a 14 grain plus pellet.I never thought these things were secrets, i just know they were untold unless asked specifically.

Good video. Good information in an understandable manner.
One thing that you didn't touch on that I have always found to be true is that ANY skirt damage will cause a pellet to be a "flyer". Many moons ago when I was knee high to a grasshopper, I interacted with some competition shooters. They had hand held dies that they put every pellet through before shooting it. They said the dies brought the pellets back into specs, and improved accuracy. Didn't argue any, because they were shooting pellets through pellet holes.
I don't have any such fancy equipment, but I do cull my tins. By and large, any flyers that I have I can say are my fault.

I noticed that your Gauntlet is shooting around 850 ish fps. I tuned mine to 970 with the 14.3 grain because I shoot the Daisy 15-grain hollow points .22 from amazon for 6.99$ for 500 a tin and the accuracy and performance they give me out of that gun is fantastic. Dime size groups at 30 yards and able to effectively take large critters out to 50 yards and rabbits out to 100+. I have taken slow-motion images of these pellets in flight and they are laser straight in flight. These also shoot excellently out of all of my Nova Vista liberty's as well. By the way, the Liberty's use the same magazines and are fully regulated, side cocking, and variable power for 50+ $ less than the Gauntlet, from ATI, but that's another subject altogether. The Crosman pellets seem to have more tin or antimony added to them making them harder and because of that they don't expand that much. The Daisy HP pellets, on the other hand, expand to over 3/8" at the Gauntlets speed and shut the critters down instantly. Excellent video by the way. I just wanted to make sure that you were aware of a cheap alternative and more effective hunting pellet that your gun will love as will you. I love all my guns and wouldn't ever get rid of any of them. People with 2000$+ guns snub their noses at us because ours isn't an FX or Daystate or whatever, but their noses get a little sore when we are taking their money calling our shots at the range. Ha Ha Ha funny isn't it when you know what your gun likes and know how to use it. Don't get me wrong, those guns are awesome and with the right combination always outshoot their user.

I have been on the fence about the "cleaning of barrels." Some say "yes" some say "no." Glad to hear, someone explain; "why not too." Makes sense to me. When I was kid we called it "seasoning the barrel." And only cleaned the barrel when things were off. We also only had 2 pellets in .177 to choose from anyway. Now there are many pellets out there. I stick with 2 in .25, I put 200+ rounds of Hatsun 24.7 domes($8.99/200) got them grouping nice and then I went to the Benjamin 27.8 domes($13.99/200) they are grouping nice too. I used the less expensive pellet to "season the barrel," then I shot the more expensive pellet and they were grouping right a way. I shoot both regularly now and at 25 yards they are grouping close to the same. Have not been able to test longer distances yet. However, I have put over 500 shots in my marauder now; and it shoots both the Hatsun 24.7 domes and the Benjamin 27.8 domes "real nice." I dont plan on cleaning it for now.

James, great work. Also the labor you put into the Nitro shows there is no free lunch if shooters want a low-cost mag springer. As accurate as PCP? Great rebuild!
Recently built a 753 from scratch. That is more my speed and have made it a close-range hunter, careful shot placement. With the fine barrel and smooth engineering of the 753, I would put that up against anything up to 20 yards.
Thanks also for still doing longer videos. So many trying to adjust to new UA-cam rules by doing only 3 minute vids. You are an alpha dog worth investing 10 to 20 minutes.

What he said about the head and skirt size is completely wrong. Most pellets like JSB has skirt sizes of 5.55-5.57. The head size is normally 5.49-5.53. They make the skirt a lot bigger so that it catches all the air and conforms to the rifling better. You also said a 15.89 grn pellet is medium. They make 34 grn 22 pellets. I shoot 25.4 grain pellets out of my 22 cal airgun. The lightest I shoot is 18 for compatitions. As for pellet weight and twist rate, the pellets weight doesn’t have as much to do with accuracy with certain twist rates as pellet length does. That is why when shooting slugs different slugs of the same size and weight but of different lengths will shoot totally different. Take the H/N slugs and NSA slugs for example. A 23grn NSA slug is short, and has a wide, deep hollow point. But the same weight H/N slug is longer and has a shallower hollow point. What I am getting at is you need to measure the length of the pellet that groups the best in your gun and find lighter or heavier(depending of the purpose) pellets that are close to the same length

Enjoyed the vid but I have 3 tips to give. 1: You mentioned going 0.2 mm over in size is acceptable, and I think it was just brain-fart, but the correct advice is 0.02 mm as a variable window for head-size and skirt-size on pellet sizing. 2: As a rule of thumb I always try to clean any gun, whether it be a pellet rifle or a "normal" gun from the breech forward. I try to never push anything up the muzzle-end of the barrel, to prevent any damage to the crown, and any potential to "backwards" gouging in the rifle bore, from rod separation or any FOD. 3: It is a good idea to use a silicone-based lubricant on a conservative basis for piston seals, or spring surfaces, and also. Never use a petroleum-based lube because you want to prevent deiseling, carbon-fouling, and seal degradation.

NICE!!! Great to meet another 'fanatic' concerning 'details' and "specs". THANK YOU for the Twist Rate info. I have always wondered what the "Twist" rate was in my rifled barrels (or if there was any). 1/19 -1/22 is pretty interesting. The "flight pattern" of certain pellets now makes sense. . . If I may offer; One other spec I found to have a huge effect on Flight was "ballistic coefficient" (b/c). Although the biggest factor I found in flight and energy (besides weight) was "skirt size" and I was shocked to find such a HUGE variance in size of skirt from Type to Manufacturer. Crosman's own pellets have a huge difference depending on type. While they all state 5.5mm...its the 100th that matters. The Crosman .22 in a Domed is 5.52; while the Hollow Point is 5.54. Benjamin Hollow Point 5.56. Some are even larger ie Predator Metal Mags (21g) in a 5.58mm. . . I agree with you on certain ARs preferring certain pellets. I have several, from a sub 500fps to Magnum Springers and a NP (1200fps) and each preferers a certain pellet. Look forward to checking out more of your work. Cheers and Happy Shooting.

I think your info is good for the most part, but I disagree with not ever cleaning your barrel. Pro shooters will dry patch a barrel until the patches come out clean, but not use nitro solvent or other cleaners that will remove all the lead you've deposited in the rifling and barrel imperfections. That will put you back to square one and you'll have to repeat the process of re-leading the barrel, but dry patching won't pull lead from imperfections, only from the flat surfaces which will reduce pellet drag in the barrel. The next thing you should look into is possibly the most important item affecting accuracy and that is the barrel crown. ANY imperfection in the crown will send pellets scattering. This is why it's important to never push in a cleaning rod from the muzzle end of the barrel. A metal rod can absolutely destroy a crown with one careless push down the barrel. I use a plastic coated cable (similar to a bore snake) which pulls a patch through from the breech end and will not damage the crown. Hope this info will help to further your quest for accuracy. It is possible to re-crown a damaged barrel with pretty basic tools... Good luck, JT

Hey man, Great stuff. I found this most interesting. Saves us a lot of cash trying to find the right pellet. I am 59 yrs old and been shooting airguns since I was WELL I CANT REMEMBER. any way. The best and most accurate one I have shot and shoot is the cheapest one I own and it is the Crossman F4 solid stock. $78.00. I got one for my nephew for Christmas and couldn't believe the accuracy and speed. he was 13 yrs old and been BB guns shooting since he was 5 or 6 and he knows to be safe. I didn't know this gun shoots so well to be as cheep as it is. SO I HAD TO BUY ME ONE.1200 fps aint no joke. at 50 yrds with the 7.80 grn Gamo Red Fire pellets, 1in groups at 50 yrds. can get some in same hole at 50 yrds. next to them is the Crosman Premier 7.9 grn hollow points, can get 1in groups. have tried others and these 2 shoot the best. those Gamo red fire's shoot the best. We don't use anything else. we don't have to adjust when we go from the redfires to the crosman premier hollow points. . there's no need to spend 1 2 3 hundred bucks on a airgun to get this accuracy and speed. .177 cal pellet gets a little wild at speeds much faster than 1200 fps, do you agree. Thank's for the information and keep it up.

Great Video and great info to get out there to help people understand how its a lot more then just buying a air rifle and pulling the trigger. If people don't shoot real guns they will not have this information. I am with you it would be best if Air rifle manufacturers just put this information in the user manuals.

Sorry for the back to back messages. As far as pellet lube. There is a few things that work really well. One is 100% synthetic 20w motor oil about two drops to a tin off 500 after they have been washed and dried. Will absolutely keep the barrel from leading and also helps the leade in on lower quality barrels from smearing the lead at the skirt of the pellet. In 9 out of ten guns it will shrink group sizes a little and if guns are pellet fussy it will make them less pellet fussy.
The next thing is believe it or not a drop of coconut oil. Always wash the pellets to remove the lead flakes that are present and dry them. I prefer the synthetic oil but some guns prefer pellets lubed this way and will shoot tighter with the coconut lube being used however the most prefer the synthetic oil.
Either way you want hardly any on them. If you pick one up and can feel it on them you have to much.it needs to be an extremely fine coat and that is enough it also keeps your pellets from getting oxidized if you have them for a long time. When i get a run of JSBs that just shoot lights out I call in and order some times 50 tins of that lot number or how many ever that have. So i have a lot of pellets and constantly order. When i get a premo lot i shoot those pellets in competition and not just punching paper so they may sit for a while and the light weight synthetic oil keeps them with zero oxidation and really to shoot even if they are a few years old.
I can tell you this if you wash the pellets and dry them then lube you are 100% gonna tighten the groups up at 50 and further. At 25y you may not notice a difference but at 50y and out the groups will shrink on average by a tenth of a inch or so on world class guns and more so on lower end guns. Shrinking a ten shot group a tenth of a inch at 50y consistently is a huge amount out of my Crown, Impact, HM1000x those guns are so tight shooting that knocking a tenth of a inch off at 50y a lot being they are consistently shooting .35 inch 10 shot groups and now that's making consistent .25 inch that's huge...
Out of lower end guns you may see a few tenths of a inch knocked off the avg 10 shot 50y group. If your gauntlet was a consistent .75 inch 10 shot gun at 50y it will likely be shooting right around a half inch 10 shot 50y groups... That's taking decent accuracy and turning it in to pretty damn good accuracy just by washing and drying and a little bit of synthetic oil.

If a the skirt of a pellet is getting blown off by the gun the pellet is not for that gun. The Diablo waist on pellet helps stabilise the pellet in flight. Unfortunately the Diablo waist also creates drag which reduces the range of the pellet. To solve the problem of the pellet waist getting blown off you can tune the rifle or use a thicker skirt pellet. Great video.

If you want to really get the most out or budget airgun barrels there is a few things that you need to do. First is a quality crown... Send it to Alchemy Airwerks and have them square the barrel face and lathe turn you a nice crown he charges like 25 to 30 bucks... Or you can do the brass screw method and diamond paste anc get a much better crown then what comes stock on budget pcp guns that will give you the biggest increase in accuracy period. Next would be to smooth the air transfer opening to remove all burrs and smooth the leade in so you aren't getting rifling smears on the pellet skirt from a sharp leads. And then lead lap the barrel with JB bore paste until you have a near mirror finish. That's taking a crappy crossman barrel or similar and turning it in to a near match grade barrel minus the choke. Im mainly shooting FX Guns and RAW HM1000X LRTs now but still have my .177 and .22 Daystate Red Wolf's my last 10 guns have been a .22 a .25 and a .30 HM1000X LRT and 7 FX guns, im pretty much stuck on FX guns just because of the huge adjustability and ease of it and the STX liners and the ability to have proper twist rates for slugs.
I still have a place in my heart tho for the 300 dollar guns because of starting out with something that isnt all that fantastic and tinkering and working on them until i have a 250 to 300 dollar gun that's performs well beyond what it did. I have 3 Gaunlets and 5 Discos that have all been tuned to the max. They arent capable of shooting with match grade guns even with tons of time and work but it is possible to get them relatively close and to me that's a lot of fun. So I dabble in the budget guns and enjoy shooting them but in no way will i be giving up my top tier stuff lol.

One tip if you're chewing up bolt o-rings is to polish the breech where the bolt enters. This is often caused by burrs or nicks in this surface essentially cutting the o-ring.

Jefferson State air rifles for $60 you get the tuning kit and a lighter trigger spring. It makes a world of difference how your gun feels shooting it. I'm sure you've adjusted your trigger but with the Jefferson State air rifles kit I have mine down to around one pound. I believe jsb has a similar design to the snipers. My gun prefers the harder lead on h&n pellets but the design creates less turbulence and therefore less drop. I hope to see more videos with your Gauntlet brother I love that gun!

You need to measure the pellets before and after firing to see how the grooves engage and shape deforms. A solid head, thick skirt, long pellet will deform less and bee more accurate. Hollow head, thin skirt, short pellets deform into cans with high pressures, over 800 fps.

Ya i just finally got my hands on some crossman .177 piranhas for my gamo wildcat. I was really hoping that these heavier (10.5g) pellets would work nicely but unfortunately they don't compliment the actual barrel. The crossman hollow points work well, along with the gamo pellets but the piranha don't. It's unfortunate.

Thanks! But that's the sole purpose of the bore mop...centering the rod in the barrel, the mild steel/aluminum cleaning rod which are most common would really have to scrape the crown to cause damage...airgun steel is soft but not that soft....thanks!

I have a gamo nitro that I can stack pellets at 100 yards but only with Crossman flat nose pellets... I've tried all of the pellets out there and the rest will walk about a half inch at 30 yards. I painted a shovel head and can ping it every shot at 200 yards but I'm just lobbing the pellet out there... when I ordered my gun I just bought about 10 different pellets and spent a lot of time on the range (back yard). I would like to step up to a 22 next. That's mainly why I'm here resorting to the UA-cam gods to get recommendations lol

@Robert Kraft I thought my gamo was a pos... it was my first "plastic barrel" nitro gun and thought the barrel was "moving" or "bouncing" I even tried 3 different scopes thinking they were the culprit but it was all in the pellets... just gotta find the right combo and stick with it.
