Finally ,a cub cadet like mine. The brackets around the transmission pulley, nobody else has them. And showed how to take the fan off. Thank you very much!

This video was exactly what I needed. Went to repair a Craftsman PYT 9000 today (made by MTD) and was stonewalled when it came to removing the free-spinning fan on the pulley. Your video was very well done with good explanations for every step. I'd have never thought to put vice-grips on the pulley and then blocking them. Absolutely outstanding.
Thanks for taking the time to video this and post it. You saved me alot of frustration. I guess timing is everything since you uploaded this last week. :)

Thank you. Just had the same problem. Did it by myself but without this video I never would have got it.

Thanks, I was really stumped on how to stabilize the locking pliers. It never occurred to me to use a block of wood. You did a great job explaining everything.

Thank you for this video. It is the only one I found on how to remove that fan and pulley. It fought me all the way. The pulley did not come easy at all; took using a flat bar, a long flat screw driver and a lot of wd40 (and patience) . As I went to install my new drive belt, I found out I ordered the wrong size! The lawn won’t get mowed for another week.

Had the same issue with my 2009 LTX1045 (yep, still keeping it going). CC stopped forward moving suddenly Then found the fan on the ground after pushing the CC to a covered area. I remember seeing this fan in the past when working on the CC, so I knew to pull the battery and tray. First the nut is 3/4 inch and is CW to screw on and CCW to unscrew.
Jumping to what worked for me doing this by myself, I soaked the nut with liquid wrench for a day, then today bought WD40's new penetrating oil. Again soaked the nut for 1/2 day. From the battery opening, I clipped the vice grips to the top edge of the input pulley such that the edge Belt Disengage Support Bracket keep the vice grips from moving (The side of the CC would have also stopped the vice grips). Tried to break the nut with just my 12" breaker bar and could not turn it. I finally use a 2 foot cheater bar and with everything I could muster for about 5 seconds, the nut finally started to turn. Then after that the nut was STILL hard to remove.
I did get to see this video a some point in the middle of my experience. It did help. THANKS.
UPDATE. Finally received my new fan and when I started to put it on the transmission, I realized that I will have to secure the pulley from the bottom to fully tighten the Jam Lock Nut. So I disengaged and moved the deck partially out of the way and jacked up the front. As I looked under the mower, I saw an extension spring hanging from from the Idler Bracket. Tried as I may, I could not find the location for the other end of the spring. Looked on line at parts stores and the location of one end is clear, but not the other. Can any one give me a bit of help? THANKS in advance.
Found a picture of it at ua-cam.com/video/OT-479Ee61I/v-deo.html about 2:25 min into the video..
UPDATE 2. CD working. In retrospect, it was probably only the tension spring the popped loose from the chassis. I did not find anything on the web that was the same as my spring attachment. One end was on the tension lever and the other just in a grove cut into the chassis. I did replace the fan although some sites said it was not needed. Another good video is at ua-cam.com/video/zsgM3xq9kIU/v-deo.html. This gave a good picture on how the tension spring should be stretched, but not necessarily how attached.

Thank you! This was the most helpful video I've seen, on removing this problem pulley. I fought with mine for over an hour in this Texas heat before I ran across this!!

Awesome video, thank you. But if anyone else is reading through these comments I don’t think dropping the deck was necessary. I was able to do it on my own and with enough space right above the back tire and of course where battery goes. Same model too.

I used an impact gun to get nut off. Made job a little easier.

Two comments: 1) I had same - slipped drive belt rode up on the fan shoulder and of course sheared it from its retainer nubs. Wasn't sure if worn (stretched) belt alone could do this as opposed to a kicked up tree branch (not found) so I am replacing the belt along with the fan. 2) Regarding immobillizing the pulley I will put a thin rag swatch on the vise grip jaws so as to not scar the pulley sheave. A POSSIBLE alternative MIGHT be a piece of window shim or such wedged tight between the pulley sheave and the metal stay in the direction of pulley turn.

Use an Impact Gun, borrow one iif you don't have one.

Yeah, I had to use an impact, which helps to not having to hold the pulley, but even though I sprayed penetration oil and let it set for a few days, the nut was rusted on the threads badly. I tried a nut extractor but it was too far gone. Finally ended up using a punch and chisel. I impacted the new stainless steel nut on the threads. A seemingly small job turned south, quickly. Ugh

There's no need to replace those fans... they don't cool anything, and you risk cutting another belt.

Hi was your drive belt getting hot and slipping because the fan came off? I had the same issue with my fan when it broke off but when I tried to finish mowing after 20 minutes It felt like the transmission was slipping. Not sure if my belt got hot because of the fan breaking off.

    • @TheGameofTime
      @TheGameofTime  3 роки тому

No. My belt broke because a stick got in there while I was mowing. That is also what broke my fan.
