      1. Their name Agapornis = agapi (love) + ornis (bird) in Greek language. They took their name by the Greek philosopher Aristotelis. The first Agapornis were brought in Ancient Greece by the army of Alexander the Great. Just a tip :)
      2. They are not 9 subspecies. The genus Agapornis include 9 different Species and you can separate them in three different groups. The eyering group (Fischeri-Masked-Black cheeked-Nyasa). The dimorphic group (Abyssinian-Canus-Pullarius) and the intermediate group (peach faced-black collared). If you want to include all the different subspecies of them you will end up with more or less 13-14 subspecies.
      Thanks for the video :)

I have Peachface, Fischer, Masked, lovebirds. From my experience Peachface make better pets they are more easy going. Fisher and Masked are a bit more skittish a tad smaller and bite harder. They also need to be handled each day or they tend to go wild. I would say they type of lovebird pet you get depends on the time you put into them. Put in the time and effort you will end up with a wonderful pet. For me i have many of them and my peachface are my hands on bird pets and my others are more of hands off. My peachfaced are sweet and i let them out each day but in groups. some do not like each other and will fight big time. My fischer stay in a 32 by 21 flight cage and are 2 per cage so they have room and happy. the reason i dont have fisher as hands on is cause i dont have enough time in the day to spend with them all but they sure are pretty to look at

I have Lovebabybird. He's sassy and demands everything. He's a peachfaced baby bird. He doesn't think he should work for treats, should have all my food (which he doesn't get) and would probably eat salt only (again, he never gets, but he just KNOWS it has salt) given the choice.

Question for those who have a female lovebird, one that was hand fed when it was a baby...is she territorial or aggressive?
I just got one but was told it was a male when it is actually a female so now I am a little worried. Can anything be done to avoid these potential behaviours later on?

@@rachellebayard2569 When i was a mid teen i worked in a Pet shop. Sexing them is the distance between the pelvic bones. They are not outwardly male of female. Also if i recall the distance between the bone and the hole. I am very rusty on the subject. Been 35yrs. But i am guessing a lot of pet shop attendees don't actually know or care what the sex is. From what i have seen a unpaired pair of females will fight aggressively

I have two peach faced lovebirds :3 I got them a couple months apart and they absolutely love each other, so don’t give up if you want to give your birb a partner. You just gotta give them time to get to know each other and make sure they both feel safe and have a safe spot away from the other birb. When I introduced my birds I let them fly around in the same room and after a couple days my first birb let the other one in her cage. They’ve been friends ever since cx

If you want a lovebird to be bonded to you it's best to just get 1 lovebird if you want a lovebird to be bonded to another lovebird then it's best to get 2 lovebirds. In other words you want 1 as a pet or 2 for breeding they won't die from loneliness.
People that don't understand bird psychology don't realize that when you have a single lovebird they consider you their flock. But when you have 2 lovebirds they consider their partner their flock and not you, it's really as simple as that and that's the reality.

I wish there were more warnings to people in regards to the noise issue with lovebirds. If you are sensitive to loud or screechy noises, I don't suggest a lovebird as a generality as they DO make a high pitched screech noise that I found unbearable. Just a heads up!

I recently got a pair of bonded lovebirds. I guess they would be peach faced lovebirds, from your descriptions. Yes the little female is definitely more feisty of the pair. I am not sure how much my birds were handled before me and they are still afraid of perching on me. It has only been just over a week and I am retired so I have all the time and patience they need to become my little buddies. They are just under a year old. I love how readily information and advise can be found online. I have come across some great videos and channels so far and I can add yours to the list.

    Hiya,
    Nice clip, super lovely birds❣
Years ago we had a rainbow lorikeet and then one day I noticed a small yellow bird outside. It came immediately to me when I shook the seed container, so then I covered it with my other hand as I took him inside to safety. I had a spare cage & the birds got on fine. Spent their time mostly out of the cages. Sunny loved shredding paper and it was hilarious to watch him put the shredded paper in his wings. He was a busy little bird, turns out he shredded both sides of the vertical blinds we had which covered a double ranch slider space... he was a delight to have in our home. 🙂 (no response to the ads I placed when I found him, so he stayed on with us)👌🌏💖

I have a par blue black masked lovebird and he was unhandled when i brought him home, I've had him for 7 months now and he is handled everyday he'll step up but he won't stay sitting on me he's much more content sitting on a tv or computer lol. The most he'll let me do is give him head scratches.

I have two peach-faced lovebirds that I got as babies. They are brother and sister. When they were babies, I could tell them apart (well, based on what the breeder told me) because the black on their beaks were different from one another. But now that the black has disappeared, I can't tell them apart anymore. I named them Happy and Chipper but now I have no idea which is which so I just say "hey guys!" and they seem fine with that! :) I have a big cage for them and I also let them out everyday. They love flying around my house, hanging out on my shoulders or hands and they also enjoy riding around on the dog. LOL My only issue is, they crap all over the place!!!! I am constantly cleaning it. Also, I clean their entire cage out by washing everything and hosing the entire thing down every couple of days but I still feel like there is a strong odour in the house from their cage. Any suggestions for that anybody? Great video too - very informative! Thank you!

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 роки тому +2

Not sure what the odour is because you are cleaning it.
It could be the food or the birds. Sometimes the droppings can smell a bit but if it smells bad then maybe have their droppings tested for parisites or bacterial infections

      Potty train them!
(You should have already done so while they were still young and still babies enough to learn it quicker).
It's fairly easy to "potty" train a bird......
it just takes the *complete* dedication of the bird's owner/person to all the extra time & effort involved in it to do it.
(Just like any other training done for and with your bird/s).
You can still try to work with them to teach them at almost any age, though..if it's not already taught to them while they're still young enough to learn it faster and easier.
      Step 1 to get started-
Is always *YOU* being dedicated enough to it until it's finally completed and the bird has finished learning it...
to always be *constantly* watching your bird/s and their body language during the very early stages of training.
Almost *all* birds will poo at least every 10-20 mins or so apart....
      The smaller the bird-
the more frequent it needs to potty, but less amounts & messy.
      The larger the bird-
the more often spaced apart it needs to go, but larger amounts and *much* more messy to have to clean. (Duhhhhhhh...lol)
No matter the size of the bird, though... *ALL* of them will have a particular behavior they do right *before* they potty.
      Step 2-
You just have to always be watching closely for it in order to be ready when it happens!!
The majority of birds will always "squat" first-
lower their body and raise their tail feathers at the same time
      and/or
give their tail feathers a little SHAKE either right before or after they poo. (You'll just have to watch & learn for exactly what *your* bird's poo behavior is, if it varies a lot differently from tail raising & squating).
*THIS* is exactly what you are watching for and waiting for your bird to do at least every 10-20+ mins apart.
      When it does- STEP 3-
You simply go get the bird to step up on to your finger or arm and then take it to wherever/whatever you want it to learn is it's target spot for when it needs to go potty.
And then remember to always heap *LOTS* of praise, rewards & head scritches on the bird when it *DOES* make it to the target spot and goes potty there!!
      After a few weeks.....
they learn fairly quickly that by
      "going potty"
      *ONLY*
      at or in the
      target spot
(trash can, bird stand, it's cage, toilet, etc...)
will they be getting all that *extra* high praise, rewards AND attention from you when they do it correctly...
which they just love and live for!!!
      FAIR WARNING:
During the first early stages of potty traing...
be prepared for and *EXPECT* the mishaps & accidents when they can't hold it and wait until they get over the target spot before they poo.....
      bc it *WILL* happen...
      and *OFTEN* ...
at first, until they start to learn exactly what it is that you expect from them and what they are suppose to do!!
      And when it *does* happen....
*NEVER* try to punish them for it by yelling, screaming or anything else to them.....
this is only counterproductive and will only terrorize the bird...and teach it *NOT* to learn the thing that you are wanting it to learn,
or it will only cause it to get yelled at or punished when it *does* try to do it!!
It will be simple enough "punishment" for the bird (and affect it a great deal more)......
for it to learn quickly enough that if it DOES "goes potty"
      *ANY WHERE ELSE*
other than the target spot that you are trying to teach it to go to when it needs to poo......
      that by doing *THAT* .....
it will only cause the bird to *NOT* get all that extra added praise, rewards and attention from you that your bird craves sooooo much......
because all of *your* focus and attention will *NOW* be going towards having to CLEAN UP the mess it just made,
      *INSTEAD*
of all of your focus and attention being placed on
HIM/HER when it *does* wait until it gets to the target spot to go potty.
They tend to learn really fast exactly which one will get them the *MOST* attention and rewards.....
so don't give up right away and just be very patient and give them time to actually *learn* what you are trying to teach them.
And in no time at all you'll have a bird that knows *exactly* what to do and where to go when it needs to relieve itself.....
so that by the time a few weeks have past
(or months-depending on each individual bird and how quickly it learns things)........
      it soon becomes a
      *Learned Behavior*
and the bird will start going to it's own particular target spot that's been taught to it all on it's own.....
      *EVERY* time it needs to!

Potty training is a good idea but the droppings should not smell. It's best to set up an appointment at am avian vets and get their droppings tested. Sometimes if they are I'll or carrying parasites their poop can smell.
      Keep up with the cleaning.
A playstand is good to have so that can hang out there and poop.
When my birds are on me I put them on their stand and they poop there otherwise I have either kleenex or paper towel on hand to wipe up the poop
