I work in finance and over my 25 year career it has happened a lot. You’ll be okay and always be looking for other sources of income outside of a job. Also keep interviewing to keep the skill sharp and always move at least every two years for better pay and seniority. Don’t stay loyal as it’s a false sense of security.

I got layed off this time last year and I was devastated, it was my first big girl job. I felt like it was the end of the world, and ended up having a string of horrible luck in the beginning of 2022 on top of losing my job. I fell into a deep depression, and isolated myself for months on end. But looking back it was the BEST thing that could have ever happened to me. I had to lean on God and he ended up blessing the rest of my year beyond what I could of imagined. i’m now at an amazing job with great benefits + remote. rejection is genuinely redirection, and there is a plan. I would of never left my job if god didn’t push me out of it. hand in there💓

Don't take it personal when a manager tells you that you are laid off because they have NO say in who on their team gets laid off. I'm older than you, I was laid off in 2009 (Google sub-prime loans layoffs). We were told that our jobs were being outsourced overseas and we had a whole month before the actual layoff happened (Bank of America). I've seen many people get laid off since 2009. It's comes from the CEO then the Directors pretty much know which departments are going to be laid off but it's not personal so don't cry dear. The managers many times end up being laid off too (like mine did). They just have no say, they are just given marching orders from the Directors of their departments (and their leadership etc). You are young, but you'll see how it works as you get more experience in the workforce. Yes, it sucks to be laid off but being laid off has nothing to do with job performance and personality (for example). It's all about cutting revenue so the company can stay afloat.

I retired 18 months ago. The company I retired from hired another company to do their layoffs one time, during the years I worked there - people laid off learned it from someone not even employed by our company. One time I was called into a meeting. First thing my boss said is "if you are in this room, you still have a job" So we all looked around and realized which of our co-workers weren't in the room. It wasn't unusual for our group to meet in split groups so not everyone being there at the start wasn't odd to us. So glad I made it to retirement. 41 years. I will probably never step foot in that place again.

  • @Hossak
    @Hossak Рік тому +7

As a older worker their behaviour has been very disappointing. I really thought that tech companies thought more of their employees than this and not just quickly toss them out with little or no notice like yesterday's trash. Yes, I know that there has been a significant downturn in business and yada yada yada but again, I would have thought that in this day and age, things were going to be handled better than that. If this is your first time getting laid off, that is difficult, I don't care who you are - that level of rejection is harsh but you will get through it. It does help in a way that you were not the only one and everyone seems to have received the same treatment but again, really really terrible behaviour from the company in question. When you become a business owner or manager, try to remember this feeling and try to do better if you are faced with the same situation with having to let people go. Best of luck and try not to take it too hard.

Layoffs is unavoidable unless you run your own business. Always try to save up whenever you can as most often layoffs happen when you least expected. Maybe I’m just getting old, when did generations of people get brainwashed into thinking they would work 10 years for a company before moving on. Best advice I give to the younger generation is to build your skill sets at your current workplace so that you can find better opportunities when the time comes. Worst case scenario is that you get promoted to a higher position so they can keep you onboard. Sitting on your ass thinking the paychecks will keep coming in is just lazy.

The way this world is set up by a power beyond us mere mortals, is that either you work to free yourself or you work to enslave yourself. Sometimes or at times, you don’t know when you get freed or enslave by yourself when you’re working. But with experience and time, you start recognising patterns of these two possible outcomes.
You have to choose carefully then.

The vocabulary a company uses to explain why the layoff can vary, but fundamentally similar meaning. They may say ‘Your position has been eliminated.’ or ‘Your service is no longer needed.’ The bottom line is it means you become ‘dispensable or replaceable’ under whatever the company business situation that causes it. Therefore a recommended approach is to take this not personal, hold no grudge, and focus on moving forward, so that you won’t look disgruntled in the upcoming interviews. Also have a realistic outlook for the future employers. It’s not like they will necessarily be any different in handling business crisis than the one you departed from. Above all, stay strong and be hopeful. Your good life is still ahead.

It's because of the interest rate. Most of these companies were over leveraged and bloated during low interest rate, but now the FED has increased the interest rate to fight inflation by killing demand, if most people are unemployed they won't have money to buy things anymore, so inflation will come down, hence the layoff. Companies can't have cheap loans anymore.

You ALREADY got the right mindset. Like you said, whats done is done, there is no point in to ask why this, why that. Every obstacle is an opportunity.
Now, Invest in yourself, care for yourself, like Socrates once said: My friend, care for your psyche, know thyself, for once we know ourselves, we may learn how to care for ourselves.
Use this negative feelings as a fuel. In our relentless pursuit of happiness, it's easy to put aside or even erase negative emotions. But the truth is that unpleasant feelings are not only inevitable, they can also play a key role in health and well-being.
The ancient Greeks had a saying: νοῦς ὑγιής ἐν σώματι ὑγιεῖ - a healthy mind in a healthy body.

Most of the time you can see it coming, like the product you're working on isn't selling well, and you know layoffs are coming soon and you have time to prepare. Sometimes you can't see it coming and it's sudden and you have no time to prepare, like covid.
Every couple of months during my entire career, I spend an hour or so and look at where I am financially and how many months I can afford to survive if I got laid off tomorrow. I look at savings, unemployment, assistance programs such as SNAP, housing or heating assistance, etc., lines of credit, 401k balances I can raid, help from family.... I detail what I'd do, and I see what the number is. Usually the number is at least 12 months. That gives me a sense of calm to know that I'm okay if I get laid off.
And when I do get laid off, I take a month to get myself back on track. Do the financial stuff first, like apply for unemployment, then take it easy. Don't stress. Rest, Plan and take a weekend vacation somewhere very cheap - just to get some rest without thinking about the world - exercise, plan my new daily activities, get resumes updated, update linked in accounts, and get ready for month 2, where I get back out there.

I also got put into group that will be laid off next month. First time being laid off in my life. Scary but also know it was nothing I did. Just company trying to survive. Hope I find something soon but to be honest don't have lot of high hopes. See how it goes. Do me a favor. If you are interviewer don't ask leetcode. What a stupid waste and barrier for people who just want to program and build software and who hate studying...

I'm so sorry that you and so many of your colleagues were laid off recently. Same thing happened to me when I was in my thirties. Don't let it get you down. You and your colleagues have skills. It's just a matter of time until something comes along. In the meantime, you have time to reflect and figure out what you really want to do. That can be a gift. As a manager now, I am particularly impressed with applicants who have faced challenges in their lives and overcome them. I know for myself, I am a better person for what I went through.

Sometimes being laid-off is the best thing that can happen to you...after all it's just a job. And it shows you that you don't need to worry about being loyal to a company these days because they won't be loyal to you. Plenty of jobs in tech out there though and it isn't a profession that will go away anytime soon. You'll look back a few years from now and realize how trivial all of this was in the grand scheme of your life.

Well folks, let me tell you, if you're looking for job security, may I suggest a career in toilet cleaning. Because let's be honest, who doesn't need their toilets cleaned? It's a recession-proof job, and you'll never have to worry about getting laid off!
I mean, just think about it, you'll never have to worry about automation replacing you. Unless, of course, they invent a robot that can hold a mop and a bucket. And even then, you'll still have job security because someone will still have to program and maintain that robot.
So, if you want to be the captain of your own ship, with a steady job and a steady stream of, um, interesting experiences, then become a toilet cleaner. Because, as the saying goes, "when life gives you lemons, make lemon-scented cleaning solution."you should work at a low paying job. You will never get laid off. Why, I have been working for this engineering job mainly cleaning toilets and such. Never been fired since 13 years.

The brutal reality is that this is all in the name of corporate profits. At the end of the day, it’s about $$$. The era of easy money is over (party’s over) and companies are cutting costs to pump up profits. Don’t take it personally and don’t get down on yourself. Of course, it’s ok to feel horrible and depressed in the immediate term but don’t let it linger. Get back on your feet, try to be positive, network and take action. Use this time to take care of yourself and maybe learn new skills. Hang out with friends (don’t isolate yourself) and this too shall pass. Before you know it, you’re working again and wish you have more time to just chill lol.

Companies don't care for their employees. You are a resource. There's legit a whole department designed to manage those resources.
Companies want to have people to do the work with things are going good, but want to sever that relationship as soon as things aren't going so well.
You are not safe as an employee. There is no such thing as corporate loyalty. There is not security as an employee, only liability. Don't limit yourself to one employer.

I relate 100% when you said you are excited for another opportunities out there because you couldn't find yourself to quit if this didn't happened. In my case, I wasn't happy with my previous workplace, the management sucks, they paid us way past when they supposed to, and I wasn't paid accordingly to the position I was in. I couldn't bare myself to quit and so I waited until there is a new job offer, but suddenly they laid me off when I took my annual leave, and I was shocked they made the decision. They were "downsizing" I supposed, but mainly they exploited the workers there. At first I was speechless, but eventually I redo my resume and hope that there will be a company that is willing to hire me. I am looking forward to what's next in my career journey. 😀
