The one UA-cam itself has in it's free library has an annoying and pervasive yellow tinge through the entire film . It looks like it was shot 20 years earlier , buried in a canister then dug up out of the desert 80 years later . This version is a joy .
The same year 1941, Cooper and Stanwyck made BALL OF FIRE. Stanwyck in 1941 also made THE LADT EVE. Cooper in 1941 also made SERGEANT YORK and won an Oscar. Amazing year for both of them.
The press makes you, and the press destroys you. Still up to date. An able cast carries a great story. Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck at their best. I love this movie!
Absolute classic. Barbara Stanwyck is one of my favourites. Thanks for this. Some great comedy moments in this as well. Good to see Walter Brennan in this he is good for a laugh outstanding actor. 3 January 2023
Frank Capra is a bloody genius! A master of genuine emotional drama. And I love the parallel drawn to Jesus Christ at the end. Filmmakers today could learn a lot from Mr. Capra.
Wow , let us each and all join up...now...here and there, gosh..everywhere. may our hearts overflow with the beautiful message of this splendid film. Thank you to all involved.

direct parallels can be drawn. it made me cry. we are repeating history and its going to be Nazi Germany all over again. I know that sounds crazy but its true. Truth is stranger than any fiction.
I'd go more by director, cast (including "stars"--Cooper, Stewart, Tracy, E.G. Robinson...etc.,etc.) It wasn't the films being black and white that necessarily made them good, although there is something to be said for the esthetics of b/w that had (more) innate value than color...
theyre not always this damn good. Frank Capra is such a standout director from that era. Check out William Wyler, George Cukor and George Stevens films too.
@@richrol58 It's a really solid script and supreme casting. The harmonica playing was really touching. I just can't forget Capra and how his films make me feel, especially as an American. Even his early 30's work (with Stanwyck) is some of the best of the Pre-Code era.
Thank you so much Smoking Hat for posting this. I am amazed at the excellent quality and clarity of this movie on You Tube. This black and white classic movie makes my all time top 20 list. I especially love the classic movies from the late 1930's to the mid 1960's the best. The acting is superb, not just by Cooper and Stanwyck… but all the actors involved... especially great character actors like Walter Brennan, and John Gleason. Another thing of importance... these old classic movies had real soul, and much deeper substance... and were not ashamed to invoke Christian and biblical values and ideas. God bless Frank Capra... who made some of the greatest family quality movie ever. I hope everyone enjoys this lovely movie. Can anyone confirm if that little girl at 42:04 is Zelda Rubenstein who most famously played Tangina from the Poltergeist films? It's not listed on her IMDb page nor can I find any confirmation to the fact on Google Search but I'm almost certain it's her, she'd be around the right age & she looks & sounds identical, she doesn't exactly have a voice you can mistake either so surely it's her.

Fantastic film! So naive, pure and upliftig. Good entertainment, very timeless story. And it reminds me of a great essay by jean baudrillard: he mentioned that conservative power and capitalism will bow down and give in to somebody who is willing to sacrifice his/her life for. Because giving the gift of death ain't making and plus, so a capitalist system doesn't know what to do with it. (Baudrillard was actually talking about 9/11 in his essay, also saying that those suicide bombers learnt their technique from japanese communists. That was a much darker issue, but regarding humans and their values, society, media and politics, both "Meet john Doe" and Baudriallrds essay nail it. ) Ann is right, "if its worth dying for its worth living for" - seldom have i heard a better sentence of solace! I love how the ruthless, evil way that American business is done hasn't changed in years. Screw human lives. Money rules. Capra tried to warn everyone. No one listened.

Out of all the wonderful old movies I watched growing up in the 70s (back when old movies were actually free to watch), this was one of those films that, for whatever reason, kept eluding me. This is the first time I'm watching it. And I'm loving it, too. I especially love the part at about 25:37 when Gary Cooper makes those goofy faces! Those expressions really tickled my funny bone! “The people Norton, try and lick that” Also reminds me a little bit of the Business Plot where (supposedly) DuPont, JP Morgan and other US oligarchs tried to oust FDR and install a fascist government. Does populism has a timelessness to it and the parallel is drawn well to Jesus. Great film.
