Timbaland had a good ear for sound selection and blending sounds... Plus Jimmy Douglas added the final sauce to the mix.

couldn't have been anything crazy. that track doesn't have a particularly great kick. maybe just switched the sample, layered it with another sound, ducked something else in the mix etc.
He just switched it to a timbo neve tape 808 instead. Sound selection is key

@@romulus_ yeah that's it. Theres a clip where it shows ye in the studio with timb and they talking about the 808 he added to the song. That's literally all he did was changed the 808 to timbs 808
Very interesting. Not to say I am in the same league, but for our first album we followed almost the exact same process. I programmed beats and instruments on the ASR10 and Juno 6 (but almost everything was on the ASR10), and then we bounced the sounds to tape via an Amek using SMPTE, driving the tape hard - pushing the needle into the red a lot. I also stacked our kicks and snares. Our perc and programmed instruments came back through the speakers so punchy. That natural tape compression and saturation is almost impossible to truly re-create in the digital realm. After our first record we lost access to tape and our sound was never the same. It took me years to realise why, and I have been trying to get back to that set-up ever since, although I sold my ASR10 a long time ago. That ASR10 was finicky to programme, but what a legendary unit
I know Dre used to slam the drums through tape as well. Push it as far as possible before distortion

I thought stacking drums and putting distortion on drums was standerd practice in Hiphop? Same as Dre it was Timolands Engerneer who took his music to the next level.

wasn't that just everything was way way over compressed ? the songs sound wave was just a black bar....they told us in college that was not to do.... it will sound exhausting

@@Durkhead sorry my mistake, it was death magnetic that was over compressed, no dynamic range at all…. I’m not a Metallica fan, don’t know their discography

timbaland invented layering sounds? i guess just different times meant info didnt pass around as freely. nowadays, depending on who ya learn from, you learn about layering really early on.
Actually, you may want to give Teddy Riley that credit. Timbaland and Pharrell used to hang around Teddy once Teddy moved to Virginia. Teddy was a nut when it came to stacking 5 or 6 kick to make one kick sound (a tone for sub, punch, mid/body, attack/presence, etc) same with TRs snares. He still does it to this day lol! Timbo is a monster.

Producers were layering drums since the 80s, in synth pop and early electro hip hop.
Yeah but these folks aren’t using tape anymore. How they get that sound now is beyond me. ESPECIALLY Alchemist. His shit sounds expensive
They use very good converters and still use a console to track and print all their sounds

@Sance21 I don't think it's burl. I do know for sure when they did future sex love sounds they used apogee converters at that time. I'm not sure what he uses now.
