    21:00 "Every bad drawing gets me closer to a good drawing."
    The most important tip in this video to me. It might seem like a no brainer but to many people it isn't.
    Recently I advised two separate young artists to do a lot of doodling to improve and both told me that when they draw something they want to make it worth their time and do a big, well polished piece. They don't even do preparatory sketches and dive right in. This bothered me, as no ammount of detailing and polishing can make a drawing good if the basic shapes are off, and you get those right through practice. It's like doing heavyweight lifting and going straight for the heaviest weight without trying the lighter ones first :(

    Great video with some unique tips I haven't heard in other videos!! Love the notion throughout not to copy the pose like a photocopier, but to exaggerate and give story to the pose. Great work!

    Thank you for these gems of advice! Taking figure drawing classes in college, we were always told to draw exactly what we saw and not what we thought it should be a.k.a. Don’t exaggerate or “push” the drawing. At the end of the day, I’m still glad that I took those courses, but hearing your words relevant to cartooning or animation is so relieving and exactly what my 20 year old self (now 30) would have loved to hear. Also, i love seeing your work throughout the video and your editing skills are perfect!

    This video was really helpful. Especially all the resources you posted! Where I'm from, the only figure drawing class consists of one 3 hour long single pose. Not very helpful for quick loose practice or for building up the mental library.

    • @tallychyck
      @tallychyck  4 роки тому +1

      Oh my gosh that's tough! I get really bored with poses over 10 minutes. :-/ I can move around a couple of times and draw shorter sketches from a few angles, but after that I'd prefer the model to move! I hope you'll enjoy the figure drawing websites!

    Hi! nice video, very helpful and it was somehow really calming. I drew only 'realistic' portraits for years but i've lost interest in it. I love 2d animation a lot. I've tried stylized drawing but it looks all stiff and out of proportion. I'm fine with drawing bodies from life/online photos but only realistically. I really want to learn how to draw any character in any pose I want. I'm definetly gonna try to use these tips!! I found this video at the right time and I'm totally excited now. :) Thank you again!

    Thank you so much for this video! I watched it twice to write down things! I've been doing figure drawing (mostly from online resources) for a long time now, and I read a lot about it and how it's ok for the result to be small, how to focus on balance and weight, how to think with the lines etc but it's the first time I heard that I'm... allowed to change the model? Allowed to change the mood? That I can do the same pose over and over again (I sometime want to, but nerver allowed myself to!) so... you motivated me to get back to my pencils (ugh, I'm gonna try a pen maybe) and do some more, with a new eye. So once again, thank you ! (And if you ever want to go back to stream figure drawing sessions, I'll gladly draw along!)

    Question: Are there any other books outside of Tuesday Tips Volume 1 & 2 that offer a similar collection of techniques?
    These books seem awesome, but both are sold out. (At least I can't seem to find them, but that could be me. :) )
    Luckily, a lot of the pages are on Griz and Norm's tumbler, but I'm at a point in my practice where having a book for easy referencing would be suuuuuuper helpful.
    Thanks in advance!
    Also, this video is so amazing!! I just started pursuing a career as a storyboard artist. This video had so much info. It gave me the tools to spice up my practice routine AND to enhance my Instagram game. I'm excited to get to work.
    Thanks, Natalie!

      Oh shoot, I am used to seeing Griz & Norm selling their 100 Tuesday Tips books at conventions, so I assumed they would be easily available online, but I can't find them for sale anywhere either. :-( Unfortunately I do not know of any comparable books; these books really are worth their weight in gold. If you ever see them back in stock in Stuart Ng's store, or Griz & Norm's online store, buy them! In the meantime, yes, their "100 Tuesday Tips" Tumblr is probably your best bet for reading their advice.

    I really enjoyed this video and shared it with some other art friends before I finished it! I'm the guy who went to figure drawing over the years thinking I had to draw the model exactly as I saw them. Since I'm all about capturing likeness and was decent at drawing what I saw I got stuck in those expectations. When I tried to bridge the gap between figure drawing and drawing from imagination (which is what I normally do) I struggled because I'd really just been copying without learning during figure drawing. Getting permission to invent things during figure drawing, as well as your other suggestions feels really liberating and gets me excited to try some form of figure drawing soon!

      Yes! I felt this way a couple years ago and my instructor at that time, Bob Kato, suggested I draw with a medium I don’t normally use. It worked like a charm! I picked up color pastels and everything felt new and weird and exciting again.
      If you don’t feel challenged enough, maybe ask your instructor or an artist in your circle that you look up to for individual feedback or a portfolio review?

    • @tallychyck
      @tallychyck  4 роки тому

      @@zachseatdriver9671 I think you might be able to get some interaction online by posting drawing with targeted hashtags. For example, if you participate in CTN's drawing events, or draw from Croquis Cafe videos, they each have hashtags and accounts they want you to tag when you post. That will help people who participated in the same events / are also studying figure drawing to find you. You can also start commenting on other people's work in those hashtags, and start building your circle!

    Awesome content! I got a question I been dying to ask someone working in the entertainment industry and would love if you could give me your toughts on it. What should a artost focus on if your goal is to be a animation storyboard artist? Storyboard seems to cover so many subjects that I can't really get my head around on how should I plan my artistic development to get my foot in the door of a studio and then learn from the job. Thank you so much for your time and I can't wait to see more youtube content from you❤

    • @tallychyck
      @tallychyck  4 роки тому

      Thank you! Storyboarding really does cover a lot of topics. I don't have a simple answer to this question. We have to practice drawing a LOT to get our drawing skills to a high level, but that alone isn't enough. I think it's important to be curious about and interested in filmmaking and storytelling. So for example, it doesn't hurt to read screenwriting books, watch some classic films, and watch a few educational UA-cam videos about the filmmaking in them. Reverse-Storyboard, etc. And on top of THAT, we each have to develop a POV / unique voice, so that we aren't just regurgitating what other filmmakers / storytellers did before us! That takes time and is gonna look different for everybody. I recommend keeping a journal and writing your own short comics or short stories to gradually develop that POV / voice.
      But the #1 BEST thing you can do if you know that storyboarding for animation is what you want to do? Storyboard for animation! :D You don't need to wait for a studio to pay you to do that. Pretend it's your job already. You can storyboard things on your own time and put them online! Write a super short story, maybe something with no dialogue, and storyboard it, then put it online and ask for feedback. Or find the script for a show or movie you like and pretend it was issued to YOU to storyboard. Show how you would have done it! Or take a well-known story like Little Red Riding Hood or the biography of a historic figure, and tell the story YOUR way through your boards.

      @@tallychyck thank you so much for your time and advice! It's nice to see that I'm not far off from your recommendations! I am practicing figure drawing every day and I'm currently working on a small simple story I developed. I just bought a bunch of books on animations and movies I love and plan to get my digital art skills to the profecional level by making my own stories based on my Puerto Rican culture. So hopefully I that helps me get were I need to be 🤣 Again, thank you so much for your time ❤❤❤

    Thank you so much for making this! I’m actually going into 3D character animation but I need to get back into the habit of figure drawing on a consistent basis. There were so many gold nuggets in this video and I’ll be honest, I did about 3 semesters of figure drawing classes in school and I was pretty bad but being able to focus on the gesture and the story (as well as weight, balance, etc) will help me in building the skills I need in training my eye as well as continuing to be creative while practicing! This is a huge help!

    Hello Natalie! Thank you for the super informative and encouraging video!! Suggestion for video ideas: I'd love to know when you get a new character for the show/film, or when you jump on a new project, before you start boarding, how you practice your shorthand of the characters?

      Thanks, Sophie! That's a great idea. I guess I could choose a movie that's already released as an example, and walk through how I would learn to draw those characters if I was a board artist on it...

    Hi Natalie! I just saw this on my Twitter feed (thanks, Drew Green!) and I just wanted to say that meeting you at Boise Comic Con like 3 years ago solidified my desire to pursue a career in animation a goal that I’m still working on now. Thanks! :)
