A third bedroom could also work as a yoga space instead of having the yoga space in the kitchen.

She's a yoga teacher, so she wants a yoga studio for group sessions, not personal yoga space.
Create a third bedroom, then use it as a storage room/pantry. When it comes time to sell, style it as a bedroom, and you are back to a 3 bedroom home. Simple. And whittle down that hallway for more room in the third bedroom.
My thoughts exactly. There's little need to chop up space into honey-comb rooms like that. And the extension is ridiculous. I'd hate to try to cook in that raceway kitchen running up and down the row. The mentality of English houses seems to be a separate room for each and every function when many functions can be accommodated together in one space more efficiently.
@@virginiamoss7045 That "raceway kitchen" was a shocker Lots of strange choices. Forever homes are myths. You have to treat homes like investments because they cost so much and you simply can't predict life changes.

Paul and Laura may seem short-sighted to us, but they followed their own lights. They zoned the house according to their present desires and needs, not for resale value. And they incorporated many eco-friendly elements. Hats off.
Is no one going to mention how the couple who aimed for environmentally friendly design ended up astro turfing their front garden? Fake grass is one of the most non-environmentally friendly materials.
They were quoted a lot of money for that and they had only a minimal amount.
and they have a whopping bath and no shower. completely bonkers.
No one commented because it was obvious that they were both hypocrites like the Harrys and Me-agains of this world!

I live in a place with sometimes harsh weather. My favorite room is my garage that I can keep my vehicle dry, snow free, frost free, and cool on hot days. I never want to live where my car isn’t protected.

I will not have a house without an attached garage or at least an open carport, no matter the climate. It's a great place to store items in addition to protecting your vehicle. No getting into an icy or oven of a car. Unloading groceries and stuff right into the house. Getting stuff from your car in your pajamas (or less).
Not getting how a big hallway suits their lifestyle and now they haven't got that 3rd bedroom. Not sure that makes sense which will be highlighted when they try to sell it
I'm wondering if she teaches yoga in the house. Even then it makes no sense.

To each it's own. The couples are living for now.
If children are in the future. They will be moving to a bigger house.
And time will play havoc on their life.

How does an overlarge entry hall suit anyone's "lifestyle"? It's just something to walk through to get to other rooms...?
She certainly had delusions of grandeur and I can hear her saying now, 'Open the front door, walk down the first of the corridors, then turn left into the Grand Corridor to access our yoga studio in the left Wing of out establishment!'
I cant think what it means to have a hallway in terms of lifestyle 🤔🤷

I found it weird too. I didn't quite understand what it was used for exactly? It's a hall way but it's their house and they wanted it I guess
As much as I love the glass and natural light, all I could see was soot and leaf litter covering the roof and algae at the bottom of the glass walls. Check out any green house and see if you want to deal with those issues regarding your house.

I saw a couple who doubled their home on a 35,000 budget and achieved spectacular results; whilst the end terrace house after its 60,000 spend looks rather blah.

To be fair, not everybody wants those outlandish decorations or interior. Many people just wants a homely simple house that are easy to clean.
The long Galley kitchen/dining room has no character.
Totally. Football-field length but bland, cold, and featureless. Oh, well - they like it.
I can't even imagine trying to cook along that wall. Very inefficient.
These young couples profess to love character, but always end up creating ultra modern spaces lacking any character at all and don't seem to ever realize it!
Couldn’t their front lounge room be used as a bedroom? The back room is big enough for a kitchen, dining table and lounge isn’t it?

When working with clients you design for what they want. You can suggest and advise all day long, but if you want to get paid, you use their criteria. Even this host could not dissuade them.
Don't think they were doing much listening. They think their design is personal but it's just amateurish.

I don’t think they hired an architect. Most probably they imposed their own designs & a foreman just put it into paper.
How do they pick these people. They seem to have the most impractical of ideas. Also the builders just add stuff on that’s needed but not quoted for. What a surprise.
Sarah is always against garage or carport. But I would not give up a garage. It is very useful in winter. It is nice to get into a warm car instead of the freezing cold one. And it is not needed to clean snow or ice in the morning. Garage is good in summer as well, the car is not hot, when it is in shade.
We use remote start to turn on the car’s a/c or heat.
Yes and serves the purpose of protecting the car from the environment.
I think the reason for them not to want a third bedroom is because they don't want to have any kids. Sarah should have talked about an office instead. Or they could have had one room with both the pantry and utility in it, then they could have changed it if they changed their minds.

Paul and Laura are too young to think that they will never re-sell their home . It would not hurt for them to have thought of features that could have helped add value such as a third bedroom.
Think I have it figured out. Don't start your rebuild until you have double the money. But say you are planning to use only half. That way when the cost goes up, you won't need a loan. Don't forget to think smaller. 😅

That end terrace is an interesting prospect. Having a pantry and utility makes sense. The hall also makes sense when you figure that she will be holding yoga classes in the new space, so there will be a stream of people in and out. The downside to what they have is a kitchen that will be absolutely exhausting when making a big meal. Frankly, it would have been better to build the kitchen half way down both side walls rather than all the way down the one. If a 3rd bedroom becomes necessary, the new upstairs bath could become a corridor to another extension over the kitchen. That could provide a 3rd bedroom easily. If it were the size of the ground floor extension, it is plenty large enough for a family bath plus a new en suite master bedroom. The hard work is already done, so would be quite simple.
Richard and Sarah did a beautiful job inside and out. What they have achieved is absolutely beautiful. For myself, having the garage is worth more than losing it to create an office. I hate parking outside in winter and having to clean the car off all the time. The garage also gives space to store the winter tires and other equipment for both car and garden.
Michael Tutty, you don't use winter tyres in UK. Not that much snow.
Two more great designs! I can understand that the couple wanted a laundry/storage room. Get a bit irritated when hosts keeps pushing her ideas. In the end it is their house and their money. A good sized hallway leading into the open space feels right. It's not always about resale value. I have great respect for the couple roughing it in a home with no heat or hot water! Was interesting to see different garage door options. The door within a door is genius! Like the sliding one, too. Love the ones they ultimately chose. Practical and very aesthetically appealing. The living wall was great, but $ 10 K? For only 15 sq. meters?
If you design a house without keeping an eye on resale value, there will be a day coming you sincerely regret your decision!

The green wall seems like quite a gouge.
We just bought an eleven year old house and are freshening up the interior with new flooring, etc. We're keeping our heads level by reminding ourselves that we need to make sure it will appeal to a large pool of buyers in case we decide to sell it (don't fool yourself into thinking your house will be a "forever home" because houses rarely are--I know this twice from experience). The wildest thing I'm planning on doing that is "just for me" is to put in an Italian styled blue and white tile backsplash in the kitchen (I have blue and white china) and to paint the interior the same pale blue that we had in the house we just sold (which the buyers loved).
In the house we just sold the unique kitchen backsplash was the only "me thing" and the rest of the house was pretty neutral, but with high end features--like marble floors and shower in the master bathroom (I bought the tile new for a fraction of the price through a classified ad. The seller couldn't afford to install it).
You can personalize a neutral, more saleable house with artwork, upholstery, towels, etc.
"Neutral" doesn't have to be sterile--hence the unique wall color and backsplash.
When we finish the basement this winter it'll be neutral, too.
New owners will probably rip out the existing backsplash anyway.

A backsplash is pretty minimal for redo, not a problem to me.
I will never understand these stubborn immature couples who waste valuable space on carports or hallway but keep the tiny house. good luck selling that!

Ok ,for wanting a place to keep your car protected from the elements? That is rude.
I think the issue is they don’t want to sell, they want a place to live. They want a carport to stop their shopping getting wet, the other couple want a big kitchen diner so she has space to teach yoga.
@@TakenTook But you don't need planning permission for a car port and so can add that to the front, right on the drive and it could be beautifully done in part wood with climbers...
They already said they would insulate that carport just in case they want to convert it into livable space in the future..
I much prefer the country cottage interior, but the front of the house has a different material on each part and looks very disjointed.

That couple with the 3rd bedroom issue , really didn't think things through and that silly hall was a total waste of space.
I kept wondering WHY the huge hall was so much more important than the bedroom! There was no satisfactory answer! Lol

Ome, I i can't fathom having skylights/glass ceilings (or whatever they're called lol) like that In Australia. You'd never be able to enter that room. I think you just burst into flames. Lol
it's basically a greenhouse. But England's climate is very different from Australia's.

Wouldn't all those plants against the wall or on a roof add to the moisture that could seep into the house?
That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure there something in between that stops that.
They typically use membranes to add a waterproof layer. These types of roofs can have a 40+ year life, done properly. Green roofs also add to the house's energy efficiency by moderating temps.

Depends on building materials used and how/design, planting medium, plants, etc. Several variables involved.
@@b_uppy Thanks! There was a house in our area that was covered in vines and it was damaged over the years by birds, water, etc. But it wasn't specially built.
Move to Australia - the houses are at least twice the size as those in the UK.
You too come live in Gulf countries you will feel that you are living in one of Australian "Palaces"
Bit of a dream of mine actually, but my husband is terrified of the potential death by creepy-crawlies you have there. He´s visited, I haven´t, so I can´t argue the point convincingly. Oh well, Portugal is not bad either!
Do you know why? Because 1st Australia size is 30 (more or less) times bigger than UK. And UK population about 76 milions and Australia population is about 25 milions (You can put them in 1 UK shopping bag) that's why your houses twice the size as tose in UK.

I do find the evolution of these shows interesting - while actually becoming less entertaining, informative and FUN! Always seems like the producers are looking for the (magic?) formula - harp on about a couple of bugbears, find some ditzie idea and deconstruct it, include some pious agendas that are probably impossible and make sure you reiterate the story over & over and OVER again (fills up SO much time!) Plus it all has to be done within 6-months - regardless - which is a shame - as that's tight, being it's England & the weather mostly sucks! Why can't they just say - ready or not, let's see how far the renno has come: don't pretend the job is done when there's still a ton of work to be completed...

This shows editing. Takes them for ever to get the point across. Then they show the same canned footage over and over again.
Yes, very annoying. Also, I don't like combining two renovations in one show; I can't follow it well enough and get the two confused. Many shows do this thinking their viewers have the attention span of a gnat. It gives me a headache. Come to think of it, given the masses out there, they may be right about the average attention span if their goal is to capture and hold eyeballs for advertising.
The decorating on so many of these episodes are just dreadful

A 2 bedroom house would sell….do you believe there are no people looking to buy a two bedroom house? Why do builders/designer insist there be at least 3 bedrooms to get money for your home? That isn’t realistic. Why create a dream house for someone else when you are living there?
Eco friendly lady could have done something in limited garden for her yoga.....why do yoga in kitchen living area? Her husband may need the kitchen area....
What is the whole point of filming this? Do the homeowners get any kind of incentive from the t.v. show?

Why indulge in lazy hyperbole? The house has not seen countless seasons, it has seen 524 seasons based on being built on 1890.
What’s with this designer and carports or garages?? Always takes up too much space. I wouldn’t consider any home without a garage for a warm car in the mornings and storage galore. Also... we always have laundry rooms for the washer and dryer... never in the kitchen!

I´ve seen 2 yoga instructors on this show and both had me grinding my teeth... Don´t get me wrong, Ive done yoga at home for many years but they are rather "special" aren´t they!
