I liked them all - with the exception of the Celestion ( which to me always-sound like they have a Blanket over the speaker cabinet ) = no air, no-glassy-chime, no top end breath. Nice comparison. I have a 65 Fender Princeton Reverb reissue ( all stock - Jensen C10R ) and I love it.
Wow, great vid. I’m looking for that “one alnico to rule them all”. I want something balanced - fat bottom, moderate mids, sweet but rolled off highs. Tough choice here. They are all good, I think I’m leaning either s75-pvc or Blackbird.
I have a wide variety of Jensens and recently got an old P12N which is reconed. Is there anyone who use a pair of different speakers together to record clean or dirty?
Scumbacks are really good. I've tried all of these except for the blackbird. It's hard to capture what the scumbacks do in person. Thanks for leading me to them. Wish Weber 12a150 was in here.
Wow! They all sounded good with very slight variances in the lows to highs. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these speakers. Good video, thanks for sharing.
All good...Eminence has more air..Celestion nice and warm..Jensen P12N clear and bright. After a few weeks of playing they all sound better but out of the box the Gold for a VoX amp..Eminence for a Fender 60s type amp and the Jensen for any Tweed amp from 20 watts to 40watts is good. Great playing..thanks.
The EJ is warm and balanced and yet suprisingly still has good top end shimmer. Has a nice open sound. Very versatile. Great for jazz and fusion. The Scum S75 is clear but compressed in the mids and sounds great for folk and rock cleans.
Great shootout. I had emailed Jensen so they could rec. a Jensen for my Vintage Fender 70's Super Reverb. They told me about their Falcon Line of 10 inch and the Mod Series. I really didn't care for their Alnico line because I thought the Treble end was too spiky or harsh and the Falcon is not harsh at all. The Super I bought didn't come with any speakers at all :-( The Celestion Golds sounded the best of the bunch you demo'd but I couldn't afford to put 4 10in. ones in my amp. LOL
Hi! Awesome video. Thanks for that. Tell me one thing, I'm trying to find a new speaker for my amp... The gold when compared to the others sounds much warmer, is that the correct way to say that? While other speakers sounded more transparent and not so warm? Thanks!
I personally would go with the GA-30rv because I really dig the 10 inch and 12inch combo. Plus 30 watts is the right amount of power to not tear paint off the walls, but be able to really jam out. The 60 is awesome but harder to find. I owned one briefly, but I stuck with the 30 watt. I would have kept the 60 if I had room for it :(
sillennium Thanks for the advice. I ended up getting a great deal on a GA-60. I plan on building 2x8" extension cabinet to use during acousticishhh playing. that project will take some time though.
So I'm pretty torn. Perhaps you can help me out. I have a 68 Fender Bassman (50w, AB165) that I'm looking to build a 2x12 cab for. I have listened to tons of samples and I am stuck. I'm looking for a speaker that can handle cleans pretty well. I depend on my dirt mostly from pedals, so I don't need the amp to breakup early. I've been floating around the C12N, P12N, and Celest Vintage 30. I love the clear, colorful, and smooth nature of the P12N, I'm just worried with it being rated at 50watt, it'll break up sooner than I like. Since you've played some of these, what have your experiences been? Thanks for the vids!
TheGallantGentry I think you should possibly consider a mix of the P12n and the Vintage 30, that would be a great combination. I am a huge fan of Alnicos which the P12N is, but that Vintage 30 is a great speaker. I woudl go one of those directions, but consider mixing the two, it will be a great combo.
One more question, if you don't mind - Would you say the P12N breaks up earlier or later in your experience? Will it handle cleans at high volumes ok? I figure with a 100w head it would have trouble but you think it would do ok with a 50w head?
That's exactly what I was looking for my Marshall Origin 20..... I went with the Celestion gold it has bell like tones on the clean.... didn't come across in this video sadly.... Very smooth rounded and natural sounding or warm...... founded the dextortion not harsh and abrasive... I like the Jensen's but they lack warmth and they don't bring out the Sensitivity and character of the amp which I found was interesting.... Good luck on your tone it really depends on your Amp you're using as well.....
Alnico gold and Jenson sound about the same. Scumback has more mids and highs too. Eminence is boosted in lower mids (less interesting to my ears). Jenson blackbird sounds great, full range frequencies ! The last scumback is average to my ears. Thanks a lot for the demos !
I must admit I had a bias towards the EJ speaker, but in the end after listening to them I liked the Gold or the Scumnico best. The reason I had the bias originally towards the EJ speakers was because when I did my Eminence only speaker shootout, I remember plugging in the EJ speaker and just being floored by the sound. Honestly you can't go wrong with the EJ Speaker, Gold or the Scumnico, in my opinion. All different flavors for different players and all great speakers.
Only problem with any "signature" (EJ1250) product. 30-40% is endorsement costs.. the Eminence Red Fang ($100 less) than the Eric Johnson and is close in tone . Actually the RF is a better sounding speaker than most in this shootout and should have been included in the review
Ray Harmacinski I don't have access to the Eminence Red, but would love to try it out and add it to a shootout sometime. Thanks for the suggestion. Don't forget to subscribe.
Have you heard them side by side? Man, I can't get enough of my Scumnico. I can never go back to ceramic. That chime, that sparkle...I can't get enough!
Hey Scott, glad you posted a demo including the Eminence EJ-1250. I am a huge Eminence fan for a while now but even their own eminence web site currently does NOT have sample tones for this new speaker of theirs. I can only say priced at $250.00 I am disappointed. On the other hand - I am Not a Jensen fan - too bright for my taste and I was blown away by the BLACKBIRD. Loved it but at $235.00 STILL to pricey for me. I have to say the Celestion GOLD had a nice tone too. IF YOU DO A CERAMIC SHOOTOUT Here are a couple speakers you should include: WAREHOUSE G12C, and the EMINENCE Legend 1218 - both incredible speakers for the money. HOWEVER,Warehouse allows you to choose 4,8, or 16 Ohm. Most other mfg do not.
a. webb Find some demos of the Jensen Electric Lightning. I've got two in a Peavey Classic 50 and love the sounds they make. Much more reasonably priced than he Blackbird.
LincolnFStern Hey Lincoln - Thanks for the tip. I actually just now heard a comparison between the Jensen ELECTRIC LIGHTING, and the Jensen FALCON. The Falcon sounded a little muddy but fuller. the E. L. was brighter but clear. with Jazz & blues being my main thing I'm more of a muddy kinda fan. Liked the Falcon better.
Let me add mellow sounding to that description as well... (I really liked the sound of the governor red coat speaker from another one of your vids, but can't really tell 100% from UA-cam).
Love the demo bro but I need to know how they all sound with P90 pickups and single coils :) I need good headroom for pedals but nice vocal midrange and clarity. Im looking at that Blackbird. My amp is Egnater Tweaker 15 head
I have about 60% of these speakers still and they sound great with p90s. P90s are my hidden favorite pickup. You should check out the ruby and Cream alnico from celestion too
How come Webers never make it to these "shoot outs"? But you are saying "ALnico" correctly!! I'll bet that Gold would really explode at a higher volume. In fact, all the speakers need to be pushed at a higher volume to get the most out of them. That Eminence might be the chanp at low volume.
Fritz Nelson thanks for stopping by, glad to hear you are enjoying your EJ-1250, that is a wonderful speaker. You should certainly add the gold to your collection too!
I just got a 15 watt amp with a celestion 80 watt ceramic (sensitivity 97db) if I put in a 50 watt alnico (sensitivity 100db) would the 50 watt give me twice the headroom because it has a higher sensitivity of 3db? Even though it is rated for 30 watts less?
Thank you for recording really nice video...I wish I would see it before I bought golds,as they are great with my 20th Bogner xtc 6l6,but s75-pvc would be even greater as Bogner is a little darker amp...btw,for 70ties I use Scumbacks J75/BM75 mix in my 4x12 and they sound great! Even golds are heavenly voiced, but you know,it could be better:)
Stick South they all pop off about others playing faster than Louis CK, they all just need to turn it off and go to the next video if they don't like it.
I love this comparison vid and sniff no corks :D but I do hear the A string being slightly out of tune. Not that it matters , coincidentally my A string often gets out of tune because the nut slot is a bit tight on it. As soon I bend a bit it gets stuck. Need to find that nut file :D
+MeisterSounds I completely agree. Thank you for posting the video, but it makes it very difficult to truly hear the speakers when the guitar is that far out. I know how long it takes to swap out drivers, and an extra 10 seconds to tune up each time would really go a long way...
the Blackbird had so much depth and warmth, love it. I'd like to play/hear that w/ the scumnico together. Thanks.
No problem thx
@@sillennium you're welcome.... funny thing w/ speakers (human ears) is that in 4 months I'll like totally different speakers. Keep up the great vids.
Thx much appreciated
Thanks for the meticulous care you put into this and for the wide selection of Alnicos.
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it. Let me know if you end up picking up one of the speakers.
Gosh really loved the sound of the Scumback S75-PVC! Thanks again for the demos!
elams1894 no problem thanks for watching!
Hi nice demo and nice song. Anyone knows the name of the song played on the demos?
@@jmg4251 the song played during the demo is one written for my daughter. Obviously here as an instrumental but it is a full song with words.
@@sillennium Congratulate your son! Really nice song. Can I listen it anywhere? Spotify, youtube?
@@jmg4251 I am looking to do a full recording soon. I am not a great singer
Thanks for this video - selected the Celestion Gold based upon what I liked hearing your video. Your shootouts are fantastic.
Thank you!

Nice the princeton is a great amp
Each one is great, but I would go for the Gold and P12N mostly because I am always, after maximum chime and brilliance.
Excellent reviewer.
Thank you! If you haven't please subscribe
I'm digging the Black Bird for sure
David Hernandez thanks for watching. The black bird is super unique since it can handle 100 watts by itself. Don't forget to subscribe.
Great job, thanks. I liked the clarity of the Jensen P12N.
Thank you much appreciated
So did I, that's the one I'm thinking of now.
Wow, great vid. I’m looking for that “one alnico to rule them all”. I want something balanced - fat bottom, moderate mids, sweet but rolled off highs. Tough choice here. They are all good, I think I’m leaning either s75-pvc or Blackbird.
The blackbird has the advantage of 100 watts which is cool
@@sillennium that’s cool, but my amps are all 20 watt or less, so power handling probably won’t be the clincher.
Sounds good, my fav for a while until the cream Alnico was the Gold
Great shootout, renders the perfect picture of each speaker's tone and character. Thanks!
Thx man
@@sillennium I wonder in what language or culture Miss literally means man. Oh, well... Great job, anyway.
Interesting I saw Eric Johnson in OKC I beleieve in 2015 first thing he does when he gets to town is starting checking Craigslist for speakers
Interesting fact. You should check out my review of Eric Johnson's concert here in St. Louis.

journeyquest1 I always do a clean and "dirty" version. Here is the one with distortion. ua-cam.com/video/S-werXYAwMg/v-deo.html
Short conclusion: the Gold Alnico is neutral, the rest has bumped mids and therefore sound brighter, more in your face.
I thought it was the other way around, the gold had a really annoying midrange
