    Scott Sill demos 6 different speakers from 4 great speaker companies: Celestion, Eminence, Scumback, and Jensen. All the speakers in this shootout are alnico speakers and are available to purchase from these great companies. Scott uses the gain channel on his Gibson Super Goldtone GA-30RV and a Gibson Les Paul Standard along with a Taylor T5b.
    The speakers used are:
    - Celestion Gold Alnico
    - Eminence Signature Series, Eric Johnson, EJ-1250
    - Scumback S75-PVC
    - Scumback Scumnico
    - Jensen Blackbird from the Jet Series
    - Jensen P12N from the Vintage Alnico Series
    Scott opened the video playing a Taylor T3/B into a Scumback Scumnico.

    I have the Jensen Blackbird with a tube amp that has 6V6 power tubes and it sounds incredible. you really have to hear this speaker live to truly appreciate it. it also sounds amazing with a mesa mark v head. I think it's probably one of the most underrated speakers out right now. I did think the demo showcased the sound pretty well though. Great job

    After watching the clean video I preferred the Jensen P12N but for the gain settings, the Celestion Gold wiped the floor with every other speaker. In fact I disliked every speaker on the gain channel apart from the Celestion Gold.
    On the clean video though the Jensen P12N was everything I expected from an alnico magnet.
    I don't think I'll be buying an alnico speaker because not only are they about twice the price of regular speakers, I have a 1x12 cabinet and wouldn't be happy owning just 1 of these speakers. I only liked the Jensen P12N for clean tones and I only liked the Celestion Gold for the gain sounds, there was no "1 size fits all"' for me so I'll happily stick with my Celestion G12H Heritage Greenback 55Hz. I like it, maybe 1 day I might buy a Celestion Alnico Blue or something similar and swap back & forth between the Blue and my Greenback whenever I fancy a change of tone, but I'm not too bothered about it at the moment. 👍

    I once had a Celestion speaker demo cab which was a 4 12 and there was a knob on the front to switch from one speaker to the other, seems that would be a better demo cab. I ended up recovering the cab and selling it as a normal cab, each of the 4 sections was separated like an old
    Ampeg SVT bass 8-10. But I kept the wiring harness for the switching, don't know why but maybe I could share it if it's of interest to anybody.
    I guess I like the Scumnico the best though it was the least loud/efficient and I think the Celestion Gold had too much mid-range.

  • @drpicklo
    @drpicklo 9 років тому

    First question that comes to mind is how broken-in is each speaker? Golds to my ear sound harsh out of the box and warm up nicely starting at about 10-12 hours at gig volume.

    • @sillennium
      @sillennium  9 років тому

      drpicklo many of these speakers had an hour or two of play on them. Some even more since they were used in other demos previously.

    • @drpicklo
      @drpicklo 9 років тому +1

      Celestion Gold, for example, needs a solid 10-15 hours at gig volume to smooth out the high end. Double that for the hemp cone speakers. It sounds pretty good out of the box, but doesn't give it justice at an hour or two of break in.

  • @wesmarden
    @wesmarden 8 років тому

    Hey Sillennium, did you have a favorite out of the bunch? I felt myself leaning towards the S75-PVC's because of the balance and chime when you hit a bar chord. It seemed most of the others had too much bump in the mid range. But I noticed the S75-PVC's didn't have the volume as some of the others...? Is that due to the mid range freq bump, mic placement, or something else?

    • @sillennium
      @sillennium  8 років тому

      +wes marden My two favorites were the Scumnico and the Celestion Gold. I also really love the EJ speaker, but for some reason it didn't pop out in this shootout as much as I thought it would.

    • @soundknight
      @soundknight 10 років тому

      sillennium Does removing the bell cone on the P12N change the sound of the speaker?
      I still haven't decided which speaker to go for yet. When I here the P12N I here Keith's tone from the stones, it has some ice pickyness about it but it also sounds the clearest on top and 2nd most balanced across the mid range. The EJ1250 has a marvelous mid range and uniqueness but it has this top thing that's been annoying me - I have the Cannabis Rex already and whilst its great it has a top frequency limit (the same limit the EJ1250 seems to have - its like the harmonics are cut off and seems to be an eminence trade mark sound) The reason I want another speaker is to clear up and give punch to the gain sounds and to provide some upper harmonics missing in the delightful and smoky cannabis rex. (no pun intended). Will you be doing a monsters of ceramic shootout? It seems ceramic provides more upper harmonics generally.

    • @sillennium
      @sillennium  10 років тому

      Brian Cullen I imagine it does, but I have no experience to say how it does. I personally like the bells on the speakers only for looks, no idea if the sound is better with them or without.
