    Scott Sill takes you through 3 different series of Jensen speakers: Jet Series, Vintage Alnico/Ceramic, and MOD Series. He is using a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard plugged into a Gibson Super Goldtone GA-30RV which is running the speaker cabinet. Scott makes sure to use the same speaker cabinet for each speaker, the same amp settings and the exact same microphone placement for each speaker.
    The speakers used are:
    - Jensen Blackbird from the Jet Series
    - Jensen C12N Special from the Vintage Ceramic Series
    - Jensen Falcon from the Jet Series
    - Jensen MOD 12-70 from the MOD Series
    - Jensen Tornado from the Jet Series with a Neo Mag magnet.
    - Jensen P12N from the Vintage Alnico Series
    Scott opened the video playing a Taylor T3/B into the Jensen Tornado from the Jet Series.

    I have to say that on the surface all the Jensens sounded similar BUT if I had to pick on it would be C12N.
    Nice lows and chimie clear highs -

      check out the dirty channel version of this, bigger difference between all the speakers in that one.

    Several people saying they can't hear much difference between the speakers. Try listening to the relative loudness of different frequency ranges. For example, to me the highs are louder on the C12n than the Blackbird. Of course, an outboard EQ is pretty cheap and more flexible than changing speakers so, if you always play clean and you have a speaker you already are OK with, you might just want to buy an EQ pedal. When I listened to the 'dirty' sounds on his other video, I was much more sold on the Blackbird (compared to the C12n, which I own). If the 'dirty' is happening in the amplifier, you can't EQ it away (not without changing the fundamental, at least) because the distortion happens after the EQ. For that reason, I weighed the Dirty sound higher than the clean when I made my decision.

    Im so glad to have found this review very professionnal shootout to make a clear decision ...4 me the winner is the Blackbird best clean tone around the town but the Tornado is really good as well ...i was amazed by its tone since usually neodynium speakers use to sound very middy with no bass whatsoever n very harsh in the treble

    You rock (specially in the distortion one :). In cleans I loved the tornado and p12n. In distorted the Tornado is by far the most versatile.

    I just bought a Fender George Benson Twin Reverb with two of the Jensen 100 watt Tornados in it. Sounds absolutely great but a little tight when rehearsing with the band. I think they need some time to break in.

    I got a JCH 12/70 (the specs also call this the Mod) and just put it in a Peavey valveking, replacing a Blue Marvel. After this video I was worried about the 12/70, which was already on the way. But, it definitely has a slighly mellower high end, with no ice pick, and the lows are solid.

  • @killerbiene243
    @killerbiene243 9 років тому

    Hey, thanks for this very well done comparison! I have a box with a mod 12/70, and I find it sounds kind of thin with a strat, as well as a humbucker guitar in middle position, got the same impression here. I liked the vintage ceramic best clean, the blackbird with the overdrive. But the clean differences are a lot more subtle..

    • @sillennium
      @sillennium  9 років тому

      killerbiene243 thanks for watching. I agree the dirty shootout shows the differences a bit more.

    I’ve found on the higher wattage speakers you need to push the volume a bit more to get a really rounded and even sound on the low end. The low end gets lost when playing at low volume. I play loud anyway ( it is rock n roll after all) too many bedroom players will overlook theses jems for that reason. That’s fine by me.
    Mine, all mine!!!

    Jet Blackbird Alnico is the warmest of all. I've got this one in a rewired Fender Deluxe 65 and it sounds great!

    C12N both clean and dirty! Better to have more brightness/cut than you need rather than not enough!

    Will do Scott - thanks. A nice one stop shop speaker that can do it all from a really nice Marshall crunch to rich jazzy cleans is the Celestion Vintage 30 but overall I'm a huge Eminence fan - I own several models for different tones & amps.

    • @WebbChannel1
      @WebbChannel1 8 років тому +1

      +sillennium Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out BUT I have no use for "distortion". I mostly play Jazz & Blues and a little TUBE "dirt" in my cleans is about all I need. Most of my amps & speakers are "vintage" voiced.

      +A. W. If you listen to the dirty version you will get more of an idea of the richness of the better speakers. The alnico really shows its worth. Make sure you listen through really good gear too. Most people have pretty bad speakers on their computers. I listen through Adam a7's. $2000 when new.

    The Blackbird and the neo mag came out on top for me. Alnico still is the king of clean but very surprised at the neo mag tornado. I thought that it would be all harsh and full on but very smooth and balanced. Not sure if ceramics are the greatest for clean tones. Thanks again for great demo!!

      elams1894 Thanks for watching. The neo mag was a huge surprise to me as well, I think it may have been my favorite with the blackbird right there with it.

  • @WilliamSmith-dg5re

    Yes this is a fair comparison, but each speaker needs to be tweaked with the amp to get that sweet spot. Every speaker has a sweet spot you just need to dial it in. But after dialing it in some sound sweeter then others.

      +sillennium Great demo btw. I'm using a pair of Tornado in a TTC Rex-cabinet for a couple of years now and I just love it for clean and high gain because of their clear nature imho. Plus, the low weight of the speakers (in an already light poplar cab) makes it a great choice for people who don't want to ruin their back carrying it around.

    The P12N has a special something vintage magic and clarity, its very top strong but thats what rock n roll use to be. Tornado is very surprising almost as good as Blackbird.

    Based upon what I've seen here and on the equipment I'm using to listen. I couldn't hear much difference between these as cleans go. I still have to watch your dirty video, but I really only play dirty for leads. So to me, cleans are more important. I use a Pro Reverb that, at some point in its 40+ year career had the Jensens replaced with Pyles.
    So my questions to you are: Do you feel, based upon your experience that any one of these is particularly better?
    Also, how much of a reduction in weight do you think the Neo magnets would provide?
    Thank you for any feedback you may be able to provide.

      +Anthony Ubriaco Just on listening to this and the dirty demo I feel the Jensen P12N 8 ohm shines. It's a heavy speaker though. The Jet Tornado is my second favourite. I listen on Adam A7 speakers so have a great sound indicator.

    Personally, my favorite was the P12N. I play a Fender Supersonic 22 Combo and I am seriously considering putting a P12N in it but my concern is the amount of clean headroom available ? Do you know if this speaker breaks up early ? Many thanks.

    The P12n is not easy to work with, it sounds nasal clean, not a good clean platform for pedsls. It really shines for playing blues lead but it needs a bit of volume and gain to wake up.
