I suffer from long term severe asthma and I find it a challenge even to breathe normally. This is where your singing breathing exercises have been very helpful to me. I am trying very hard to expand my lung capacity and your exercises gives me focus in helping with my breathing. So, as a side note if I learn how to sing while doing my lung therapy I will be very happy indeed! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Have you tried WellO2 breathing aid? It is a Finnish invention to alleviate breathing related symptoms and now that I think about it, it would probably be a good vocal cords maintenance aid for singers too. It "creates a resistance for breathing and at the same time produces warm steam in the airways."
I am not a marketer, but have seen the benefits in the family so I can really recommend it.

This video literally helped me not to lose my voice. Really. Because i was always forgetting about breath support and damage my vocal chords later on i was feeling hurt in my throat. That pulse technique helped me relief my throat. I place my hand on my stomach when singing and feel every word i sing in my diaphragm. When in high notes i realise it naturally clinches a little bit, changing the path of the breath towards my neck and all i have to do is open my mouth and sing freely.
Because of the old habits, i sometimes try to increase my sound by increasing the voice flow -like yelling- but it again hurts my voice. When your diaphragm moderates your voice flow itself, your throat really does not hurt at all, it is almost like you do not feel your throat at all.
And I want to add something from me, if teacher does not mind. When in high notes, if you think you are speaking lightly, like singing to a baby to sleep, it helps greatly remove the strain. Teacher will correct me if i am wrong..
Thank you deeply for the tips, hope to sign for your lessons soon.

Hi LonelyHowl, This used to happen to me all the time when I first started working my breathing technique. It always feels easier to breathe properly in the exercises and then when you have to apply the technique to the songs there is so much other stuff to focus on.
What has helped me is two things:
      1) sing in front of the mirror with a hand on your stomach so that you can see and feel the diaphragm move during the whole song.
      2) Print out the lyrics to your song and add breath marks (markings where you want to breathe in between phrases). As you sing, look at the lyrics and use the markings to remind you to breathe properly at the right time.
I hope that helps. Otherwise please don't hesitate to ask again. I love to geek out on this stuff ;-)

When you say diaphragmatic pulse, it is a bit confusing because your diaphragm is technically an involuntary muscle. I really like the idea of focusing on the abdominal wall to help engage the diaphragm, but since I cannot specifically control that muscle alone, I think it is important to talk about both the rectus abdominus and the intercostal muscles, as they mainly control the proper breathing apparatus.

@@ikonographicsGood morning/afternoon/evening, from what I understood, diaphragm pulse has similarities when you're hiccuping. The difference is you have to release a burst of air. In other words, exhale quickly but keep your lungs filled with air enough to reach more notes and to sing more diaphragm support. Remember don't breath out a lot of air or you'll lose your breath. Have a good posture and your chest should be kept expand. Coming from a Filipino 14 years old.

I've seen lots of breathe support instructions before. What I do is inhale, then let the air stay in my diaphragm (with this, I mean keeping the diaphragm inflated) and then just passing the what I call "weight" from the throat to the diaphragm and letting the "weight" stay there until I'm done with a line. The thing is, I'm just a professional bathroom singer lol. Am I doing the right thing? Thanks.

    • @singgeek
      @singgeek  5 років тому +5

Hi Justin, Thank for your question. Being a professional bathroom singer is awesome! If I'm understanding you correctly, you are focusing the "weight" on your diaphragmatic support instead of your throat? If so, then that is correct :) You might also want to focus on exhaling a steady stream of air so that you continue supporting your voice throughout your phrases. I've made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/qaJHuD-1qyE/v-deo.html Let me know how it goes.

@@singgeek Thank you so much for this! I've actually practiced with this breathing video before the comment so... The only problem I have now is that I feel like there's a little lump in my throat when singing at the top of my range (I think it's on the top of my range since I get past that "lump"). It's doesn't feel really big, just a really, really small "lump" that stops me. With breath support, I feel like I could go more if that "lump" didn't happen to be there. I have a feeling that it's my larynx being so high up. I've seen your video on the Larynx category but it didn't help me with my problem. I'm thinking of giving it another try anytime soon. Thank you very much!

I wonder, is it possible to learn to change the way you breathe automatically from the typical way we do it these days to the more deep way singers need to do while singing? And is it worth doing?
Is it healthier to breathe this way by default overall than to breathe "normally"?
I ask this because I remember reading or hearing something somewhere about how babies and even toddlers by default breathe with their stomach, but for some reason as we grow into adolescence and puberty we get "lazier" about breathing. I wonder why this is.
Babies may be the best singers if they could be taught haha

    • @singgeek
      @singgeek  6 років тому +24

Hi CHRISTI XX, Great question! The diaphragm pulse is meant for you to feel the connection between your breath support and your voice. You "pulse" by varying the amount of air that you exhale so that you can feel the the difference in the support. When exhaling, make sure to keep the rib cage open so that your diaphragm is free to release it's tension (this is what happens when you exhale). I've made a video on exhalation for singing here: ua-cam.com/video/zM2GDKDLr8s/v-deo.html Hope this answers your question, otherwise feel free to ask again :)

I had been singing for fun for decades never knowing a thing called breath support. I have heard about this from several educators now. But I can't personally experience any difference in the vocal sound whether I have diaphraghm support or not. All sound will come via the throat the vocal cords so singing with throat is a misnomer. It is better said singing with support or without.
What does diaphragm support really mean? From what I understood from your videos alone. It means breathe so you feel your diaphragm and rib cage expanded. Then hold on the expanded rib cage as you exhale (that is sing out the air). Did I get it right?
How can I tell the difference? Is the singing without support supposed to sound thin?

I have a very bad problem. I have enough breath to sing, but not enough breath to support. I inhale enough to sustain notes and have ease, but don’t really use the breath for support. I don’t know how to use it to support. My voice range is also very confusing. I am male. I can drag a chest to F#4. Occasionally a G4. But the upper extremities of that placement are very tense. I feel as though some parts of my voice are unexplored. I can do head voice up to a G5. Occasionally an A5. But also very weak, unsupported and unreliable tone. I cannot “mix my voice”.
Some people say my range is either tenor or alto because of using the head voice to mimick certain female singers. But I think it’s more baritone. As the speaking voice is relatively low. I can low as F#2. E2 it hurts my throat and is almost mostly air.

When i am singing with the help of my breath support then it is very great experience for me , my singing is quite good (commented by my teachers and friends) then is it necessary to sing from diaphagm instead of breath support only?

So when you are "supporting"" is it slowing down the exhale whilst singing??

Thank you so much for this video! I have a question that I hope you can help me with. When using our diaphragm, do we tighten the stomach muscles or push the stomach out?

    • @singgeek

Hi Kamal Bensra, You are so welcome and great question. I do not recommend that you tighten your stomach muscles. When exhaling it is helpful to keep the ribcage expanded to allow the diaphragm to release your air with control. I've made two other videos about breathing technique which you might find helpful.
      Inhalation technique: ua-cam.com/video/e-9LPpsBidE/v-deo.html
      Exhalation technique: ua-cam.com/video/e-9LPpsBidE/v-deo.html
      Hope it helps :)

@@singgeek i don't understand , when we hit high note ,we add a diaphragm pulse .It means we have to push the stomach out more when we have already expanded , isn't it ?

suleman haroon When you take a breath, you want it to be deep and wide. Your stomach should expand both out and horizontally. Put your hands on the middle and the side of your belly. Both of your hands should move outwards.
As you sing, you want your core to be involved. You’re going to control and push that air out evenly as you sing. Notice how I said “evenly”; don’t push it all out at once!
      Best of luck!
