Yes! Your message of CICO is so clear, and important, because somehow everyone wants to believe CICO is not real. No one wants to admit they are just eating more calories than they burn. I eat breakfast the moment I get up (oatporridge with apple, berries and nuts), and the last meal just before going to bed (big fruitbowl with cornflakes, wheat germ and soy yoghurt). Eating just before bedtime has worked for me in the past 20 years, and I always maintain the same weight and bodyweight composition.
Anytime someone says that CICO doesn't matter I immediately discount them and feel sorry for all the people they have fooled into believing their obvious disinformation for profit. Keep it up Layne.

It does matter, but like BMI its short sighted and loses sight of what matters: what calories you eat. For weight loss you have to be holistic. If you waste your calories on candy you won't be full. Yes in isolation CICO is the only thing that matters, but we don't live in isolation.
It's all anecdotal. Wasn't there a guy who ate oreos for a month and lost weight? If it works, it works. I gained over 10 lbs in two months of carnivore even though all the advocates of that diet say your appetite will disappear. Not for me. I was always hungry on it. Do what works for you and don't listen to others. What you eat and when you eat just don't matter. Good fodder for UA-camrs though who grift for profit.
@@gregorygreene1940 same here, these diet lunatics think their diet is the best and will work for anyone. Cico wins all day everyday.
I don't think there is anyone out there that would say CICO doesn't matter. All of them say it is not the only think that matter. It is only guys like Layne Norton who make 'they said it doesn't matter' out of it and i can only imagine he does it for the clicks. The irony though is that everytime Layne Norton says it is all about CICO he gives an explanation that clearly show it is not the only thing that counts like 'except if you eat proteien' or ' some people can juts eat more and not gain weight' etc.
@@MrCalyho but it’s is the only thing that matters. We control what goes into our mouths. We can blame hormones or activity levels or whatever you’d like to blame. The reason so many people are concerned with the optimal way to lose weight and getting it right the first time is because they THINK they will only have to do it once. Get into the mindset that eating right and exercise are for life and you will realize that if you are curious about the effectiveness of one method over another, you can simply just try it and see what happens. There are numerous ways to be reasonably healthy, but if you want to have a low body fat percentage while being fit, you must control calorie intake and find a calorie intensive sport, hobby, or job - for life. If you are ok with being fit, but with some range of overweight, then continue your eating habits, but add resistance training and a lifelong sport or hobby. The only complicated part of this, and it is extremely complicated, is finding a way to manage and continue new habits for the rest of your life.
So true. I can starve during the day. A little protein here and there and a few carbs to keep me running, but otherwise being hungry during the day is realtively easy. But going to bed without a good, satisfying meal? No way.
My guess as well is if they measured energy expenditure during sleep, the group that ate later would have had higher energy expenditure due to the thermic effect of food and digestion of said food which would have made up the difference anyway

I believe there is a mechanism for weight gain at later hours, but not through the physical, but in the mental aspect as a norm. This is a very generalized observation. Most when eating early, have plans and are active. You eat quickly at a moderate amount and move on, but most when eating late are preparing to relax, end the evening, and will often choose more comfort, or calorie dense foods. Basically timing is the mechanism that will assist the masses remain disciplined when watching calories.

I’ve tried it all 😂😂😂, with zero difference What works best for me ( mentally ) is maintenance calories with walking to put me in a deficit . 4 meals spread out with some junk food at night while watching tv 📺
I lost 200 pounds by counting calories. I got so good at it I could calculate how many calories more to eat per day to influence my weight loss from 2 pounds a week to 1 pound. Simple math, I ate 500 more calories per day and boom started losing weight at half the rate. You can’t really go week to week because of just regular fluctuations but after 4 weeks I would lose an average of either 8 pounds or 4 pounds depending on which amount of calories I consumed those weeks.
I have respect for both Layne & Ben Bikman. I would love to see you 2 sit down and stress test your data and interpretation of the data. This would give Ben Bikman a chance to defend his also educated position of the science.
@biolayne1 I will ask Ben Bikman him why he doesn't answer you. Again like I mentioned I would like to see both respected men stress test there educated views respectfully.
I count calories, started doing it about 4 years ago despite exercising consistently for over 20 years. I also eat more calories later in the day because I’m just not that hungry earlier. I lost 30 lbs and added ten pounds of muscle only by eating in a slight 200-500 calorie deficit and focusing on getting .8g/lb of body weight. Doesn’t matter when you eat.
I count calories using a food scale, and finish my mostly whole foods w lean proteins before 7pm and its the only method that works for me. Monitoring my calories and tracking all my nutrients including protein/fat/fiber/ ensures I pick more nutritious foods and lose weight. The witching hour is after 9pm...when I crave my favorite junk foods...but cutting off the evening eating helps me minimize my binging on junk food.
I also eat my dinner later because I train in the evenings and like to eat a b igger meal post workout. But wait, if we all have healthy metabolic function and we’re lean, then maybe we all must be outliers 😂🥹

CICO. Why is everyone so hell bent on claiming everything BUT? Always leave a deficit of calories before bed for the inevitable 1 am wake up and bowl of cheerios.
My mother is also the proponent of this belief. Despite me trying to explain that total calories intake for the whole day is what matters, she's just too stubborn. Drives me nuts sometimes.
I eat dinner about 90 minutes before bedtime. I've weighed the same (~160lbs) for the last 4 years. I also wake up and graze on chocolate squares almost every night. Probably shouldn't, but not because of weight gain, I'm sure.
As a late-night snacker (typically pistachios, macadamia nuts w/ some dark chocolate...) I will readily admit that the research (not on weight) is supportive of shifting our eating towards early in the day. Lower inflammation with stopping earlier. But the greatest concern is glymphatic function being shut down by carb intake (insulin response) within a few hours of bedtime.
Layne, we don t need people like ben and paul and eric and whoever to respond to you because if it s not from a change of heart, it s just going to make for a waste of time. at most it could make for an entertaining roast if you post it online, but other than that, nah. keep doing what you re doing
Layne doesn't touch on a key point - there are a lot of studies indicating reduced sleep quality if you eat right before bed. Reduced sleep quality can impact recovery and especially if you're trying to lose weight, reduced sleep quality can affect the ratio of weight loss between fat and muscle tissue
I work night shifts...I eat before i work around 10pm,3am while at work, than 930am after work....I'm not even close to being overweight....6 foot 5 170 pounds.
Ate the same amount of calories or ate the same foods? We don't absorb 100% of the energy from what we eat. Fiber and food processing influences energy absorbtion.
Calories measure the metabolizable energy in food. As such, the number of calories associated with fibrous foods already take the fiber into account. Is the human body 100% efficient at absorbing all nutrients? No. But it’s pretty damn close. It’s not going to explain why some people are fat and some people are skinny for the most part.
Using my context, I would agree with the title of this video. Eating late at night causes me to insanely overshoot my TDEE because my mind is always like f*** it, I’ll just be more disciplined tomorrow
I eat first thing when I wake up and I eat a big bowl of oatmeal immediately before bed (and of course I eat several meals in between). I am lean. I hate being told I am not supposed to eat hours before bed. I know it may affect sleep but I don’t seem to have that problem.
5:06 if you're more hungry at night, eat more at night. if u're more hungry during the day, eat more during the day. what matters most is total daily calorie intake. however he's not saying there may be no benefit of eating earlier in the day, so i'm not sure.
From my personal expirence at night i tend to crave sweets while in the morning i tend to crave more fat and protein, wich i find really intresting, ofc calories in and out is still how all of it works but this reminds me of what Thomas Delauer once said about some cannabanoid receptors in the brain being more active at night.
The study referenced is flawed for sure. But eating late usually comes with certain life style, therefore there is a correlation between eating late at night and weight gain. However, when eating a healthy diet, it only matters when food is eaten when it effects your body function. For me, eating late at night usually means I had to work late and could have not had food for over 6 hours. This may lead me to eat more (larger calorie intake). Even if I don’t over indulge, I also have digestive issues that may prevent me from sleeping and recovering from the day. Therefore, eating late at night is detriment to my health in general, not just getting fat.
I ❤ Layne. I was a fitness instructor with AFAA. A Jillian Michaels Body Shred Coach and A Early Childhood teacher that first majored in allied health. (Think taking prereq for occupational therapy. PT Something nutrition or fitness based) Ive dealt with HPA axis disregulation. TSH subclinical but not T3 T4 issues. Blah, blah , blah. A few years back put me late 30s female highly exercise, nutrition regimented, . Plus crazy busy lifestyle and emotional tramatic life. Hence long term plus current toxic status - degrading cortisol HPA adrenal pituatitary disregulation. Then cause i had optic implants for severe near sighted vision developed cataracts. Then elongatation of retinas had detachments having me go blind. By the grace of God, my husband and Emory and I beleive the best retina and pediatric retina specialist Dr Hubbard and would be remissed to not mention the cataract specialist Dr. Kim have had my eye sight except periphery for driving without glasses to 20 20 vision + - .Amen Helluliajia! ❤. Fwd ... I love listening to ppl like Layne, NASM , Michelle Roots, Clean and Delicious. But when it comes down to it science backed random human control stdies win. While I hear Layne say he doesnt discredit anything that is sustainable long term the question is psychologically is it? Or is the way that Layne and realistic people that are highly educated and proven to be right better? As for me I will tell you what Layne says works for over all long term health. Being too rigid, All or Nothing whether it works or not has emperical flaws psysiologically or emotionally. If you get up on stage psysique or strength comp but didnt factor total over all wellness are you actually winning? From the stand point of total wellness I would contend this severely. Real world , real ppl - seriously get a grip on what really matters not just on being totally perfect because being perfect in one area means your not balanced somewhere else. Emotionally, spiritually, or at the very least yiur cutting out macro. - micro nutrients, If you go to the gym and just lift for hypertrophy and dont think about cardiovascular , core , biomechanics, mobility is that the best ??? Dudes its okay to to Barre Pilates womens classes and in fact helps yiur workouts to be more well rounded, same thing for women its okay to progressively over load strength train safely. Do it to the best of yiur RPE. Lastly Layne is 100 percent right❤ . the things he says work are applicable and will give you long term health outcomes. Of course you need to come ton that conclusion for yourself. Key principles i live by try to eat healthy 80 20 principle or better. Dont beat yourself for messing up its okay just get back up and do good things. Exercise, sleep, healthy balanced nutrition, de stress spend time with love ones and ones that you like the company of that are glad you went to the pizza place but also happy yiu ordered the salad so they to appreciate knowing moderation. Layne is a dude, i am a lady personally I dont like vulgarity my husband is the son of a preacher man. Layne would be awesome to listen to for my husband. But he cant cause he makes hubbies ears hurt. Sadly and he needs to because what he says is so relevant. Who ever tore into Layne causing him to appear defensive STOP IT!!! Because Layne is the best . You know it he knows it . Just wish Layne would talk as eloquent as his actual intelligence is because he truly is 1#. We should be grateful to him rather than make him feel like hes on the defensive. No one should have to feel that way least not someone that actually cares about someone that is trying his best to help better the lives of others.rather than shame others. Anyway Love your knowledge Layne. God Bless what you do👍
I agree with many of your criticisms but you should look into how certain gut bacteria cause hunger (want more sugar and fast food) causing people to eat more! Most likely this is caused on purpose due to companies making the food addictive.
As an energy scientist and a newbie to the fitness scene I have found the obsession with calories to be a little confusing. Different forms of energy never convert without loss. I can follow the reasoning that the excess energy not utilized or expelled by the human body is going to be stored as fat. But is calories a precise measure of human energy balance? Direct caliometry measures heat energy of a substance, yes? As a former student of human biology, I was taught that the chemical energy molecule utilized was the atp molecule and not heat energy. What margin of error is there to use the heat energy of a substance to the atp conversion rate of that same substance? And how do you prove anything statistically with associative data sets? Cheers
Seems to be either 3 or 6 days but I think it's difficult to understand how they did it. If that's the case, it's obviously why weight loss is irrelevant and not included in the study. I think Layne Norton is a bit off here. Update: It's 3 days between the tests because they let the participants get used to the environment for the first 3 days of the stay.
@@biolayne1 Sure. But the problem is that you present THIS study as evidence for it. You say "their bodyweights did the same thing because they ate the same calories" which is false (what is its probability with 16 participants in < 100 kcal difference for 3 days?). This is either a blatant mistake or dishonesty, and you should do the right thing and admit it.
@@rrrlasse2Ben Bikman chose that study , not Layne Norton. Layne was just responding to it. Bikman chose that study to support his claim that for weight loss calories are not the only thing at play , that meal timing has an effect - yet by your own admission he can’t make that claim based on that study. The time period was too short to make a difference. Your criticism towards Layne should in fact be pointed at Bikman. But at least Layne looked at the weight loss results (which makes it even worse for Bikman) because they show the exact opposite of what Bikman says should happen. Layne provided a study that went for 12 weeks and had results that supported the claim that calories matter , and meal timing had no significant impact on weight loss over a 12 week period.
....why do people like keep things complicated? Be in a calorie deficit, eat your protein, feel the rest of your calories with the rest of your nutrients, move..... Done.
This doctor is so good in some ways and needs to go back to school for scientific training in other ways. For example, the reason why that you keep calories the same when doing the study about eating a different times of the day is because you need to eliminate any possible variables. It seems that calories do matter but they're not the only part of the equation. Regardless of your opinion on that particular part, to do good science, you need to keep all variables the same except the one being tested. Doctor who runs this channel, why would you mock that scientific process in your video at about 1 minute and 50 seconds into the video?
Thanks Layne . I’m really sick of people complicating things that aren’t complicated. If you want to lose weight eat less calories, easy! Thank you

Is the human body 100% efficient at absorbing all nutrients? No. But it’s pretty damn close. It’s not going to explain why some people are fat and some people are skinny for the most part.
God bless you
One for the algorithm
How many calories does Layne burn yelling about studies? If I yell about studies will I get strength gains?
I think I just fell in love. Again. 😂
Ben, please respond. Thank-you...
FTA!
TY for dropping the hammer AGAIN!!!
Final bit about analysis paralysis is the key takeaway here.
thx
😊
5:06 if you're more hungry at night, eat more at night. if u're more hungry during the day, eat more during the day. what matters most is total daily calorie intake. however he's not saying there may be no benefit of eating earlier in the day, so i'm not sure.
What are you unsure about? I don't understand your question.
@@robinmorris8201 He didn't ask a question.
@@VegetaPrinceOfSaiyans I never said he did. I just wondered why he is unsure.
@@robinmorris8201 You said you don't understand his question, which implies you believe that a question was asked.
From my personal expirence at night i tend to crave sweets while in the morning i tend to crave more fat and protein, wich i find really intresting, ofc calories in and out is still how all of it works but this reminds me of what Thomas Delauer once said about some cannabanoid receptors in the brain being more active at night.
man, me TOO.
You're also releasing more endocannabinoids later at night and the longer you go not sleeping.
- micro nutrients,
If you go to the gym and just lift for hypertrophy and dont think about cardiovascular , core , biomechanics, mobility is that the best ???
I'd care more about personal sleep quality if you eat closer or farther from bedtime
Cheers
As usual LN puts things in perspective. Keep up the great work
omg, i damn near peed myself laughing so hard LOL🤣
How long was the intervention? Can't find that anywhere... was it long enough to detect a diff in body weight?
Seems to be either 3 or 6 days but I think it's difficult to understand how they did it. If that's the case, it's obviously why weight loss is irrelevant and not included in the study. I think Layne Norton is a bit off here. Update: It's 3 days between the tests because they let the participants get used to the environment for the first 3 days of the stay.
Except there are better controlled studies that show no difference… like I also cited
My sleep isn’t so good if I eat before bedtime , but that’s just me , other people might be completely opposite.
....why do people like keep things complicated?
Be in a calorie deficit, eat your protein, feel the rest of your calories with the rest of your nutrients, move.....
Done.
That Ben dude got cooked lmao dayumm
I am leaving a comment foooooor the aaaalgorithm!
Bump 💪🏼
This doctor is so good in some ways and needs to go back to school for scientific training in other ways. For example, the reason why that you keep calories the same when doing the study about eating a different times of the day is because you need to eliminate any possible variables. It seems that calories do matter but they're not the only part of the equation. Regardless of your opinion on that particular part, to do good science, you need to keep all variables the same except the one being tested. Doctor who runs this channel, why would you mock that scientific process in your video at about 1 minute and 50 seconds into the video?
