    The two times I have lost a massive amount of weight and dropped into the sub 15% bodyfat range was when I started doing a massive amount of cardio like 25+ miles a week without that much changes to my diet. Why I like cardio is the effects or benefits are exponential. The more weight I lose the longer and faster I can run. The longer and more intense I run the more weight I lose and better I feel. With lifting I can get bored or if I'm not feeling like I'm making any progress I lose motivation. With an hour of cardio I can run 6 miles an incline of 2 or 3 or do intervals with higher incline/slower pace or walk the last mile at a really high incline and burn 700-800 calories. I think the treadmill undercounts the calories burned since I weigh 225.

    About BMR, I have a very specific question linked to a recent article: this article came out in the journal Obesity a few months ago, "New insights in the mechanisms of weight-loss maintenance: Summary from a Pennington symposium".
    They report pretty convincing evidence that there are "metabolic adaptations" to obesity: at equal muscle mass, the previously obese individuals who lost 10% of body weight consume up to 300Kcal/day less.
    How does this "metabolic adaptation" connect to your point that obese and non-obese individual have equivalent BMR?

It always comes back to eating less, there is no way around it, in 2013 i had back and hip pain do to a chiropractor over adjusting me while getting prolotherapy and PRP to fix the incompetent mistakes i lost 40 pounds, i was fasting and eating less, i was 41y old too and the weight just dropped.

    Thank you thank you thank you for a real explanation of metabolism 🎉
    A slow metabolism would mean your body is more efficient.
    And if this is so then why dont we help people around the world who are suffering from famine and starvation by slowing their metabolism?
    Ie: making their metabolism more efficient and allowing them to hold on to mass whilst being in a massive calorie deficit…
    Whats this you say it’s mot actually possible

    • @brucejensen3081
      @brucejensen3081 2 місяці тому

      Slow metabolism usually happens with hypothyroidism. Slower digestion probably gives you more of a chance to get more out of the food, but could lead to digestive issues. I guess your body is more efficient at protecting more vital parts, but not at protecting extremities. Overall the body is much less efficient overall, if your metabolism is slowed.

    When I spend an hour doing incline walking on the treadmill, I might not be burning all that many calories. BUT if I didn't do my daily steady-state cardio, I'd be watching my Netflix on the sofa with a bag of potato chips on my lap. Low-Intensity Steady-State, to me, is like Creatine, Whey Protein, Zero Calorie soft drinks, and my daily multivitamin pill -- none of them are making a huge impact but they are all playing a role in helping me attain my goals.

    I think there is a body type to an extent. I have 2 daughters 18 months apart who eat the same foods and similar activity levels. One is an ectomorph like her dad and one is a mesomoroh endomoroh like me. Both tall for ages which are 6 and 4. I'm curious how they will continue to grow

    What about hormones? Are some people leptin resistant? Or what do you think of "eating for your hormone type?" Been seeing this guy who talks about it a lot. Some guy who says he was in charge of making special forces people fit.

    It's important to ask: "What do you mean by bodytype?"
    Because lanky people with a tiny frame are a thing.
    Also short people with a sturdy frame are a thing.
    And a good mix is also thing.
    If you call the extreme forms of those builds ecto or endo, isn't that fitting enough?
    Of course if you go like people come in exactly three shapes and they're all physiologically completely different... Yeah, okay, not that.

      It's the idea that the somatypes dictate what workouts and diets you should follow. For example ectomorphs claiming they can't gain weight.

    • @user-nm3ug3zq1y
      @user-nm3ug3zq1y 2 місяці тому

      @@levirognejensen1745, yeah, driven to that extreme it becomes nonsensical.
      However, if you have a lanky build, you often might profit from picking different movements - out of lever considerations.
      For example with long arms, benching will hardly hit your pecs because your tris and delts give out first, and with long legs, squats might not work so well for you, because you have trouble staying upright enough. So using relatively more isolation movements or techniques like pre-exhaustion might be helpful.
      With nutrition, there can also be differences. For example NEAT is a big factor. Some people unconsciously move more and need to take in more calories in order to gain weight.
      It doesn't mean that they can't gain weight - but it may be harder for them, and they might gave to look for tricks to get in more calories easier, using calorie-dense foods like peanut butter etc.
      So if you look at it closely, there is some truth to those bodytype claims, although it's not as schematic as those people make it out to be.

    The origins of the somatotype theory have more to do with psychology and eugenics than with health. Like BMI, it was intended more as a demographic predictor.
    The problem is that people don’t like to do what works, because it involves discipline and patience. You can always sell a “miracle” that promises a fitness model body with no effort.

    how can you reference Herman Pontzer for metabolic rate by age, and then 2 minutes later say that you can modify your daily energy expenditure by exercise?… His book “Burn” essentially is entirely about how DEE is conserved- i.e. if you exercise your BMR goes down to compensate thereby resulting in a DEE that is pretty close to a paired sedentary control. anyway… still a good video!
