unit micro is very different in aoe2 and aoe4, it's much more complex in aoe2. And the civs are much more different from each other in aoe4 vs aoe2. It's slower than aoe3 but quite a bit faster than aoe2.
So, AoE4 is basically AoE2 that got its late game issues sorted out What i don't like is that you made two points for turtle strategies in this video and i am certain that AoE4 is slower but it seems that it's going to have that much action...
@@graemes8187 i see you haven't built 30 or 40 trade carts from a well placed and defended market. You can get enough gold to keep up unit production. And the neutral markets in Aoe 4 makes it possible to never run out of gold in a 1v1
I'm surprised batch training was not kept from AoE3. The faster pace of AoE3 seems more akin to modern design principles and this game bucks that trend.
Number 7 was in AoE1 - even the theme of it being ruins you have to cap. Relic probably saw it as a prefect opportunity to bring it back since it's also the sort of victory condition they favor.
I really like the mechanics and the similarities to AOE2 but the graphics really turn me off. AOE3 looks so beautiful. Why did they take such a huge step back? I can't be the only one feeling like that.
what, aoe3 had too much glow, too much artificial smoothening and was oversaturated and clumsy to play although it was good to look at. This might be okay to play in campaign mode, but a huge hindrance in competitive play. aoe2 had no glow, had hard edges everywhere and was too minimalistic and utilitarian. I find aoe4 to be the perfect balance with a slight glow, smooth edges without the artificial jitter, and much more resolving to play than aoe2 while also looking better than aoe3, and mainly much better shadows than aoe3.
You know that most footage comes from a "stress test" So focus was: can the servers handle the amount of players and not: hey here is our gamd, try it, because it will be like that on release
It's an art style choice not a "step back", there's a difference, plus a game doesn't need to have realistic graphics to be good ,look at age of empires 2 (2013) , it has more players than aoe 3 DE lmao
The lack of generalized military batch training is a bit heartbreaking. That is going to slow down the game significantly while also increasing the surface area of your base.
i have found that i like 3 better than 2 because I have a bit more options with the chosen empire. More buildings, more things I can find on the map, the card deck. I hope that will still be there.
Each civ is a bit more diverse than they were in Age of Empires 2. They do feel different. And with the landmark system you shape your civ a bit as you go up ages. But there is no card system. So people who liked that about Age of Empire 3 or Wargames (to mention an other game with cards) will be a bit disappointed that the game lacks that. I think each of the 3 games will have their fans. And I will play each of the game even going forward (Though I wish for a proper remaster of Age of Mythology and Rise of Legend to. I do not think one can even buy a digital copy of RoL :( )
aoe2 has much larger player base and targeting them is the most logical choice, aoe4 is a faster aoe2 with some good game mechanics from aoe3 and some improvements.
@@Cythil I bought age 3. I liked it. it had interesting parts. I havn't play any aoe game in a long time. I probably like AOE2 better. over all. its a more microing game. As an AOE III player yeah this AOE IV is pretty much like AOE II in terms of mechanics but they did add some AOE III features as you have mentioned in the vid. Missing is the mass military unit training like in AOE III and this game requires you to make 5 or more barracks to make 5+ units unless you rely on the increased unit production speed tech from the civs tech tree. Only nitpick is the units in aoe iv still look slightly cartoony! 🤣
That's the idea. If you watch or play any of the 4v4s I haven't seen the slightest hiccup in performance with 1600 population out in the game fighting. Spirit of the Law showed off a 4v4 game and it runs buttery smooth.

Yeah, but they removed all game mechanics pros uses for microing Housewalling Quickwalling Dodging arrows Hill bonus Sheepscouting So im wondering what will replace this micro? If nothing i think the game will be much less exciting from a competetive standpoint, both for players and viewers
@@AttiliusRex I think the asymetric factions is a big change though. Imagine putting a "half price villager" cheap tech in feudal age in aoe2, it would break the entire game balance, whereas in this, its balanced because other civs also get absurd bonuses in very niche areas. You can't dodge arrows or micro as much since units have slight acceleration and dont turn instantly, but there's so many other decision-making things that go into a match. AoE4 I think just moves some stuff away from micro and moves it toward macro. I don't just mean economy, but the general ideas of what to build next or where to go, just because the factions are so different. The civs to me are more akin to the civ differences in something like Company of Heroes, where even though every faction gets a "machine gunner" they all deploy at different rates, have different arcs, suppress at different rates, etc etc.

@@TrikeGarage There's a specific command for doing that. But also more generally I rather think SupCom has a level of automation that Age fans would dislike. And Starcraft fans for that matter. Pathing is horrible at the moment, if you attack an enemy army you better click on one of the many first roll of the soldiers, otherwise your troops just goes around and try’s to attack that single enemy solider in the middle. IMO AOE3 does a lot better at this, if your troop can’t reach the target they will immediately seek the closest enemy to them.
what I've found from comment section is that aoe2 players love the game and aoe3 players hate the game. Considering that aoe2 has much larger player base, I think it will be a huge success.
It doesnt have enough playerbase, aoe2 players wont stop playing aoe2, and aoe3 players dont like it so they wont migrate either. Rts are not that popular, so it will be a niche game in a gamepass environment, its too expensive on steam
Both player bases hate it because its too much like the other. Its fine to like your favorite game but really no one would've been happy unless AoE4 was DE deluxe edition or their game. And players saying its not going to get a player base because not a lot of AoE2 and 3 will transfer over I don't think Microsoft had them in mind really because if you played a game for 20 and 15 years respectively you're not going to leave. Microsoft drew from AoE2 the most because its time tested to be the more played game. I think AoE4 will be a game onto its own what I saw over the weekend were people trying to play AoE2 and AoE3 in AoE4. Microsoft made the definitive editions to give the AoE team exposure to games to make AoE4, but it some people think the DEs were the priority.
@@luisperalesbo If you've player a game for 20 years or 15 years you're not migrating over those are the core people you're talking about. Take a step back and look at the RTS scene Starcraft 2 AoE2 Warcraft 3 AoE3 and Company of Heroes. Company of Heroes is the newest game coming out 2013. RTS is ripe for a new game. Starcraft 2 by far is the most active, but Blizzard is removing support for it and in a game with three Civs (literally only 6 different match ups) the lack of updates and how fast the games it's going to make it a very stale game. It will keep its core but it won't gain as many new people.
Am I the only one who dislikes all the icons and buttons in Aoe4? Why does it look like a social media button? It's the same with the changes from Civ 5 to Civ 6, too cartoony, and all the buttons were so... lifeless, soulless, just general social media looking buttons. Ew.
I know we havent seen everything yet but the Sacred Site was an interesting thing to figure out! Not to mention it looks like they've possibly done away with treasures on the map? Some warships have aoe 3's broadside mechanic. Units show all the bonus damage they inflict like in aoe 3. Ranged units have a weaker melee attack like in aoe 3. That being said AOE3 is solid, fast and more dynamic game compared to AOE2/AOE4.
Yes but the civs play very differently to each other for 2 players. For 3 they don’t change enough
unit micro is very different in aoe2 and aoe4, it's much more complex in aoe2. And the civs are much more different from each other in aoe4 vs aoe2. It's slower than aoe3 but quite a bit faster than aoe2.
That ui puts me off so hard. I dont know what were they thinking making medieval game ui look like stellaris
So, AoE4 is basically AoE2 that got its late game issues sorted out
What i don't like is that you made two points for turtle strategies in this video and i am certain that AoE4 is slower but it seems that it's going to have that much action...
The late game isnt sorted - its the same as AoE2 as i can tell - trash wars past 30 mins.
Trade carts and relic trickles are tiny.
@@graemes8187 i see you haven't built 30 or 40 trade carts from a well placed and defended market. You can get enough gold to keep up unit production. And the neutral markets in Aoe 4 makes it possible to never run out of gold in a 1v1
@@graemes8187 In AOE4, farms now generate gold in addition to the standard food. I think that alleviates the problem of trash units in late game.

I'm surprised batch training was not kept from AoE3. The faster pace of AoE3 seems more akin to modern design principles and this game bucks that trend.
Not really surprised considering how strong AoE2 is still going. And that game can still have rounds being over in
aoe2 doesn't have the batch training and is extremely popular.
@@ritwikreddy5670 aoe 2 runs on nostalgia fuel. Batch training is very standard for mordern RTs games. Aoe 3 was ahead of its time.

Number 7 is basically Relic's signature victory condition . You know about it if you play CoH or DoW series .
Likely so, but I'd like to think them as Ruins from AoE1.
Number 7 was in AoE1 - even the theme of it being ruins you have to cap. Relic probably saw it as a prefect opportunity to bring it back since it's also the sort of victory condition they favor.
@@tulisotilas good point.
@@GepardenK exactly
You know that most footage comes from a "stress test"
So focus was: can the servers handle the amount of players and not: hey here is our gamd, try it, because it will be like that on release
It's an art style choice not a "step back", there's a difference, plus a game doesn't need to have realistic graphics to be good ,look at age of empires 2 (2013) , it has more players than aoe 3 DE lmao
Aoe3 is a completely different game compared to Aoe4. Aoe4 feels like a slightly updated Aoe2.
Sounds like they took all the annoying features from AOE2 that aoe3 fixed and brought them back. Glad I didn’t preorder
Me too!
so true
They never cared for aoe3 players 😪
The lack of generalized military batch training is a bit heartbreaking. That is going to slow down the game significantly while also increasing the surface area of your base.
No, single units are made 5 times as fast, you will get 5 units in the same time
i have found that i like 3 better than 2 because I have a bit more options with the chosen empire.
I do not think one can even buy a digital copy of RoL :( )
there will be a masteries system that probably allows for some customisation.
aoe2 has much larger player base and targeting them is the most logical choice, aoe4 is a faster aoe2 with some good game mechanics from aoe3 and some improvements.
@@Cythil I bought age 3. I liked it. it had interesting parts. I havn't play any aoe game in a long time. I probably like AOE2 better. over all. its a more microing game. I like the stone and having to build mining camps etc. and training soilders one by one. which I like aoe3 also. multiple units at once. no drop of. it give you a bit more military control. stuff like that. I think the cards are a good feture. and the trading outposts. how you can upgrade to a train etc. and how you can chose 2 different "empires" etc.
@@ritwikreddy5670 well said
I think all AOE3 players have to know is that: AOE4 is basically AOE3 graphics with AOE2 gameplay
So its just aoe2 mechanics with better graphics. Nothing like aoe3. Why does it look so cartoony.
It was made by Relic and not by the usual team, so different art style
As an AOE III player yeah this AOE IV is pretty much like AOE II in terms of mechanics but they did add some AOE III features as you have mentioned in the vid. Missing is the mass military unit training like in AOE III and this game requires you to make 5 or more barracks to make 5+ units unless you rely on the increased unit production speed tech from the civs tech tree. Only nitpick is the units in aoe iv still look slightly cartoony! 🤣
I actually find the style - pretty realistic landscape (i think the lighting overall has improved) + a bit magical effects and characters quite nice.
Looking at the graphics looks like ill be able to play this on my fridge lol
Dont be fooled, its horrendously optimized so far
That's the idea. If you watch or play any of the 4v4s I haven't seen the slightest hiccup in performance with 1600 population out in the game fighting. Spirit of the Law showed off a 4v4 game and it runs buttery smooth.
I was afraid that aoe IV is going to be just like aoe II with minor changes. It seems I wasn't wrong :c
I am still going to play the hell outta this game
Yeah, and I love it. AOE2 is one of the best strategy games of all time. AOE3 was dog shit by comparison... I played it for about 3 hours and HATED IT. I'm loving AOE4 and how to advance into the newer ages. Its a traditional AOE game, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it thus far.
Yes, I don’t like it
@@obiwankenobi785 True. AOE 3 is masterpiece.
@@obiwankenobi785 Aoe 4 will have modding tools which makes me expect their will be a lot of mods some might make it more like Aoe 3. Aoe 3 is my least favorite Aoe game but it's still a really good game
4:35 though it is suspicious, that shortly before IV releases, both II&III get civs with special mills, that in a way boost the gathering rate of farms around them, (even though the specifics are different in the case of II, giving you instead a part of the food, when you build the farm)
Sacred site victory, that is a quite old mechanic from Age of Empires 1.
The projectiles in this game still look like total garbage
This is just what aoe3 players need to know about age 2
No
why nowadays is the fucking Lod in games so bad ? like in 2:40 the threes ??? WHHYYYYYYYY i noticed this in many new "next GEN" games
Tried to play IV went straight back to 3, much more fun to keep playing 3. Age IV looks like league of legends.
I think Aoe2 has just been redesigned. Pretty much the same dark age build order, drop off sites, single unit training ...
Yeah, but they removed all game mechanics pros uses for microing
Housewalling
Quickwalling
Dodging arrows
Hill bonus
Sheepscouting
So im wondering what will replace this micro?
@@McSniffle yeah, but coh has directionsl cover, targeted abilites like grandes etc to make the combat skillbased and microintensive
Not sure what aoe4 has, or are all battles won before the engagment (eg numbers, counterunits and upgrades)?
@@AttiliusRex Like I said, the CoH aspect of it is only that the civs are more distinct from each other. I don't disagree with you that the game has moved more away from micro and more toward macro and thats fine. I dont believe a game is more competitive-centric if it has more micro, it just changes the nature of the competition. I play fighting games competitively but I dont think thats more or less competitive play than someone playing chess.
@@AttiliusRex I also think so. I'm a big fan of aoe3 but given a choice I would rather play aoe2 than aoe4.
I liked having upgrades in the market, not only did it make it so you had to build it but also it became an easier part to implement in strategy
Melee units should be able to kill siege with melee. Torches are very bugged. Also, attack move needs to attack more units not all target 1 enemy
Back on supreme commander they all will target a separate unit so their is no over kill bullshit
yeah, charging a siege unit with cavalry feels so satisfying in other aoe games, it's a pity that's not in aoe4.
@@TrikeGarage There's a specific command for doing that. But also more generally I rather think SupCom has a level of automation that Age fans would dislike. And Starcraft fans for that matter. TA-based games have optimized automation and planning tools cos they're played at a very distant, strategic level. Fights are much closer in and smaller in AoE.
Remember this is a beta. By this time next year it should be all sorted out.
They really just remade AOE2 better huh welp, I guess AOE3 is going to slowly die again after this :(
Might not be necessarily the case... I was planning to transition to aoe4 from aoe3 but now after trying it, I'm doubting I will.
@Βελισάριος Right?!
@@krispyk277 I hope AOE3 stays alive, I love that game so much. Glad devs are supporting it as much as they are now right now.
Not for me, overall AOE3 is just more dynamic, decks are just cool as it can influence the game
@@obiwankenobi785 On top of that the price is ridiculous for a rehashed version of aoe2.
what I've found from comment section is that aoe2 players love the game and aoe3 players hate the game.
Considering that aoe2 has much larger player base, I think it will be a huge success.
I'm in a large aoe 2 clan and I cannot think of a single member that likes it.
Its a mixed-bag so yeah aoe2 players might think of this as another aoe3 with 3d assets + enhancements.
Am I the only one who dislikes all the icons and buttons in Aoe4? Why does it look like a social media button? It's the same with the changes from Civ 5 to Civ 6, too cartoony, and all the buttons were so... lifeless, soulless, just general social media looking buttons. Ew.
I'm thinking they just aren't made yet and if those are the actual ones mods will easily fix the problem.
I know we havent seen everything yet but the Sacred Site was an interesting thing to figure out! Not to mention it looks like they've possibly done away with treasures on the map? My scout feels like a sheep herder rather than a treasure and enemy finder...I do enjoy the ability to win via 3 options rather than beefiest most advanced = win. It gives us slow, economically incompetent individuals a fighting chance lol.
I think Microsoft is trying to make a big push into competitive RTS, espically since Blizzard is starting to take support away from Starcraft2. They can't have matches that last hours if that's the case.
Treasures like the ones in AOE III? I wasn't aware they added that in AOE IV?
@@JJ-zr6fu Absolutely I agree, it took me an hour+ just to beat the AI enemies during the trial period. Trade monopoly seems extra hard in age 4, it was already hard in age 3.people rarely pulled that off.
AoE 4 with shipments & batch unit training would be amazing
Home city cards should only for sending units, crates of food, gold, wood and stones but not for military and economic improvement researchs. All of those techs should be within buliding related to it. Like in Aoe 2.
@@yullegrahardjazh I disagree. The decks/cards add a drastic variety of strategies, that's the beauty of it.
aoe3 were overseas colonies, so shipments make sense, aoe4 and aoe2 are empires and shipments are non sensical in this context, and too many strategies means new players are less likely to stay for long time since it is a lot of work to learn all those.
@@ritwikreddy5670 why? It drastically improves the chances of weaker players winning through some unforeseen twist. It also makes one less dependent on perfect micro, which broadens the spectrum of players. I can come back to AoE3 without spending hours on training my buildorders.

4... it's Age of Mythology, but you build landmarks to age up.
5... some buildings have area effect buffs, that varies with civ
6... it's back to "it's Age of Empires II"
7... it's "it's Age of Empires I"

All those things are carried over from other Aoe games. Some civs have access to the culverin an anti siege unit cannon. The cannons in Aoe 4 are more powerful similar to Aoe 3. Some warships have aoe 3's broadside mechanic. Units show all the bonus damage they inflict like in aoe 3. Ranged units have a weaker melee attack like in aoe 3. Less more asymmetrical civs like in Aoe 3. All civs have culture specific graphics for units and buildings similar to how aoe 3 had non European factions I'm sure there is more.
I learned a lot about AoE3 from this video XD
I still like AOE2 🤣🤣
Aoe4 is obviously a sequel to aoe2, not aoe3, yet this video makes it look like aoe3 was a succesful sequel to aoe2, which is simply false as even aom:de has more average players than aoe3:de...
Dropoff+techs Aoe 2
one unit per time Aoe2
stone is back
cannon occupy less population( imperial bombard is 12 in AOE3, but 4 in AOE4?)

Another AOE2 definitive Edition with better graphics?
I like aoe 3 style more but sadly i cant accept its graphics style compared to aoe 4 .
Aoe 4 uave best graphics and physics of movment in the franchise
So far it looks like as far as an upgrade to AOE2, 0 A.D. wins over AOE4. More strategic mechanics, better graphics, open source.
0 AD is good but definitely lacks polish. The game play is clunky and unit routes are poorly designed. I have enjoyed playing it last patch.
The main difference betwenn relic and sacred site victory is that you cannot fortify 3 sites the way you can do to 1 monastery (that was already in your town). So, I really think that sacred site is more related to trade monopoly victory than to relic.
You forget that a port is a drop of point to,
If you're used to *insert mechanic that makes AoE 3 better than AoE 2* you now have to *insert AoE 2 mechanic* 🙄

they did a good job copying aoe2 way more than aoe3 since aoe has a niche tiny community (of which i'm a part) but I can adapt once they fix the little things like shift clicking build; and bugs where certain upgrades don't show up on notification when completed. Finally the dark age into feudal age is a touch slower than aoe3 (aoe3: 3min age up 90sec transition vs aoe4: 3ish min age up 2 min transition).
Nothing beats AOE3 Gameplay. AOE4 is backdated shit with new graphics. I regret buying it, it is expensive shit with such a shit gameplay. Too dry, straighforward and simple.
