All the aunts in this comment section celebrating this validation tells me this isn't necessarily a new microtrend but a new name for a timeless aesthetic. Most of us have that one female family member who's crafty, a little weird, a little boho, and one of our favourite people in the world, and I love that she is being celebrated!

This was such a fun concept for the video. As a 30 year old aunt, I have discovered that I am, in fact, participating a bit in the Aunt Wave aesthetic. I am currently wearing a pastel "confetti" knit cardigan haha.

This Auntwave reminds me of something really black. Like it reminds me of Jacob Lawrence paintings, Jazz, the later part of the 20th century, and social justice. I'm sorry if this is out of nowhere but this is what it reminds me of and I've had it in my head for years now.

I know exactly what you mean. I remember Black women dressing like this when I was a kid in the early 1990s. It's such a specific look, and I think of it often. Her outfit would've been perfect to guest star on Reading Rainbow, teach an art class in Fort Green, or picket city hall around 1986-1994.
I should clarify I understand it's much more than a "look." It evokes a movement, community, culture, point of view, time, and place that I can't fully understand bc I'm not Black, but even from the outside I can recognize it's something significant. The energy I've always felt when I see it can't be put into words, but it is simultaneously joyful, creative, optimistic, mischievous, serious, determined, assertive, authentic, curated, patient, immediate, strategic, revolutionary, and powerful. It makes me think of Anansi, using wit and creativity to turn the tables on his enemies. /m
I became a literal aunt this month so this makes me so happy. I'm the family member who does "crafts" like crochet, jewelry making, painting, etc that sometimes aren't considered art but are just for the fun of it. This style feels reminiscent of the idea that things can be fun and not need to be perfect. Definitely moving into my "aunt" era😆

Heck yeah, this is the aesthetic I've always wished for but never could quite encapsulate into one specific idea enough for it to be that right level of eclectic cohesiveness. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge, I think it helps me get a better idea of the style I am still trying to figure out for myself even though I'm 25. I avoided dressing for confidence for years, and have had an ever changing body shape, so I still feel a lot like a teenager figuring out how dress myself.
