The Theology of Christ's Body | The Eucharist Explained | THEOLOGY OF THE BODY

  • The source and summit of everything we believe as Catholics is the body and blood of Christ given up for us. While there are numerous ways of approaching the Eucharist, John Paul II’s Theology of the Body opens a great window into this mystery of mysteries. It reveals an insight into the theology of Christ’s body.
Saint John Paul II says that the Eucharist is the Sacrament of the bridegroom and of the bride. . . What does this mean? How does this explain the Eucharist?

This is beautiful teaching. I never thought about the wedding aspect. As a Missouri Synod Lutheran I believe in the true body and blood of Christ in communion, but for many years, I have worshiped in a beautiful church, but one that does not believe in it, but thinks it is symbolic. I do feel like it this has weakened my spirit over the years. I hunger for the Eucharist.

I'm a convert who is not confirmed yet... I've been telling my spiritual director I can't go up to the priest and cross my arms anymore during communion because the tears won't stop for how much I ache for the Eucharist. I have been saying how it feels like I'm engaged and need to remain chaste and in order to do so, I can't even be in the same room as my fiance.
This is exactly how I've been coming to understand the mystery of the Eucharist. It feels like a holy longing for Christ's body in a marital way... May St. Mary Magdalene pray for me as I learn to be chaste in all things. Especially the bridegroom, our Lord!

Thank you Mr. West. I'm a cradle Catholic, so I had somewhat of a mental idea/image of the Theology behind the Eucharist. It really helped me truly understand the Beauty of Holy Communion, as well as human erotic love points us towards Agape love, which is really the panicle of human existence. To love God, truly and fully. I'll be praying that everyone can learn to do these. Please pray that I do too. God bless, Pax Et Bonum.

You know, in a way, it is the Eucharist consuming us... Christ is Immortal, and in transubstantiation, bread and wine become Christs body and blood, for reals :-). We imagine we consume the Eucharist, but is the Eucharist that is consuming us, as we become the One bread, the one body of Christ, as we are The Church. We dedicate, and rededicate, ourselves over and over again, to draw closer to Jesus, to worship God, to follow the Holy Spirit, to Honor Holy Mary and Saint Joseph, our human errors fade, our Hope and Faith and Love in Christ Grows. Every mass, every Eucharist, Christ's body grows, growing in each believer, growing in each disciple, growing in each sincere prayer of the Faithful. We are absorbed in the Miracle of the Eucharist. Praise God !

I appreciate the "theology of the body" as it testifies, as do the Gospels, to the incarnation of Christ, and as it refutes the Gnosticism of the world. But when the Lord ascended he didn't gives us his "body", he declared through St.Paul that the Church is His body, and gifted us the indwelling Spirit. The eating of the Passover Lamb wasn't of major importance but rather the "passing over" of the angel of death, and the exodus that followed. Likewise we as Christians have passed from death to life, having been set free by Christ's death and resurrection.

I don't think you understand the "passing over" as I think it should be. If you didn't eat the Lamb in Egypt, the process of passing over is incomplete. How? God won't recognize you you as a free rider to the Land of Milk and Honey. Look I am just saying this but you can have it your way. God bless you.

I think a scripture that helps explain the Eucharist is the story in 2 Samuel 23 15-17 "nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD. 17 And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives?" This is speaking of David pouring some water on the ground. Why did David say, "is not this the blood of the men?" when speaking of the water? Did the water turn to blood?

I’m searching for a good argument/rationalization as to why transubstantiation is necessary in the sacrament of Communion.
If all of these analogies and parallels are true, and CW makes a great case, why is it necessary for God, through a catholic priest, to perform the miracle of transubstantiation. Isn’t it already the Body and Blood of Christ?
I appreciate the ritual and the necessity of church leaders to perform the rituals, but has the miracle already occurred before the ritual takes place?

ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II: “It is important to be ever mindful that communion with Christ is deeply tied to communion with our brothers and sisters. The Sunday Eucharistic gathering is an experience of brotherhood. The sign of peace is a particularly expressive gesture which the faithful are invited to make as a manifestation of the commitment to mutual love which is made in sharing the one bread.”
POPE BENEDICT XVI: “The Eucharist has a “personal and social character: Christ unites himself with me, but also with those beside me, and so unites himself equally with my neighbor. We are all one bread, one body. And this is communion - without solidarity with others the Eucharist is abused.”

Each time the Eucharist is celebrated at mass, a window is opened for us, people in the future, to live the same Golgota's redemptive sacrifice occurred two thousand years ago making us to eat and drink the ALIVE lamb's meat and blood. This is possible because God is not subjected to time and space dimesions, for Him is always PRESENT.

the first mention of Judas and his betrayal was (literally) at John 6, when Scripture records the majority of His Disciples leaving Him. There is no record of Judas' reason being the failure of Jesus to be the "military" Messiah. But the 'BETRAYAL' is prophesied right after the Jews said - "this is a hard saying".

The Last Apostle who drank from the Cup of Christ (Blood of Christ) had all the SALIVAS from all the Apostles who drank from it, perhaps including Judas Iscariot, for in one of the Gospels, Judas was narrated present in the Breaking of the Bread (Body) and distributing of the Cup of Wine (Blood) to the Apostles which they never complain drinking from one (single) cup only... In those days, mouthwashes and toothbrushes had not yet been invented, so most likely possible they had more contaminants in their SALIVAS than with us today.
If the Roman Catholic CHURCH took what Christ Jesus had said was LITERAL Body and Blood into the Bread and Wine... and the Apostles never complain about drinking from ONLY "One Cup" based on their FAITH in Christ... therefore, why does the R.C.C. more concerned about the HEALTH of the Priest and those who will be the PARTAKERS?... they need to wash first their hands before touching the Holy Eucharist, and they should have separate drinking cup separate from the Priest and Church members... Does this mean the R.C.C. really never TRULY believes 100% in the "LITERAL SUBSTANTIATION?"... Or perhaps just a "SPIRITUAL REPRESENTATION?"... Christ said, "Do this in memory (remembrance) of Me."
Praise be to God in Christ Jesus' name... Amen and Amen...

Where in Luke 22 do we see the inclusion of Mary as a symbol in the eucharist? The idolization of Mother Mary in Roman Catholic theology is beyond me, yet they say they dont worship her as they pray to her, adorn their places of worship with statues of her, etc etc. These are all extra-biblical dogmas of early Roman Popes, not actual teachings found in scripture. Catholics give high praise to the eucharist as part of a Christians walk as to why im here with open ear, but what I know from history halts me to accept such twisted views of meanings/purpose of sacrament as told by Roman Catholic theology. Where is your scriptural support for divinization? for Mary as the bride rather than the collective Body of Christ? You cannot provide it.

Hail Mary Full of Grace... The Lord is with you,.. these were the words of the angel to Mary... Then if you come to the church there is what is called dulia, hyper dualia and Latria.... Latria is the reverence given to God alone, which makes Him the highest of All that is ... The dulia and hyperdulia belongs to Mary and the saints ...... They do not share equality with God... So stop accusing the Church of making Mary a God or idolization her.... The Catholic Church knows that she isn't idolizing her, but it is you we feel so, come down and bend low and understand what the church teaches....
Simeon was right when he said to Mary .. as for you this child shall pierce thy heart. These words of Simeon came to fulfillment in people like you who keep piercing the heart of Mary with your wrong thoughts.... Thanks

The Eucharist to give people salvation who don't have the Holy Spirit yet.
John 6:63 Jesus tells us that real flesh is worthless and it is the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist.
Peter responds and says yes your words of the Eucharist are to bring everlasting salvation. And that the disciples and friends are already saved.
