Joel you missed out if you didn't get to do this a a kid,you need to do it soon many of the drive-ins are closing in the US,but maybe you could go to the one Lia and Ach went to in England. I think that you would really enjoy it maybe you could go with Lucy or Lia .
It's so American, but just 50s and 60s. The speakers they used to give you were dreadful, so weak and tinny sounding. The consession stands were the best part.
@@robertschwartz4810 Its not just 50's and 60's i grew up in the 80's and 90's and going to the drive in was one of the best things around. They didn't have speakers in the one my family frequented rather it was thing that you put on you radio antenna or you turned your radio to a certain AM frequency and it picked up the sounds.
Gosh I remember the metal polls with a speaker hanging on it with a couple feet of wire. You rolled the window down a few inches and hung it on the glass facing inwards. Sometimes you got a bad speaker and would have to pick a different parking spot. Then in the 90s they got fancy and you tuned into a certain radio frequency on your car radio. Now our city has no drive-ins anymore. One is just over grown with weeds and small trees, and the other is now a Sam's Club.
I've had a drive-in near me my entire life. The first movie I remember seeing there was STAR WARS. My parents would hide me under a blanket in our station wagon when I was a kid to sneak me in for free. As a young teenager, I'd never watch the movies, instead hang out with friends (look at girls) by the concession stand. In high school, it was a place to make out. In college, we'd sit in the bed of someone's truck with coolers of beer. Now I take my kid there, just without the sneaking in part. On a side note, I like Ach's idea of retiring to serve ice cream. I have a Dairy Queen two blocks from my house and I've always thought I'd love to work there once I retire. Serving ice cream is serving happiness.
We would park our pickup backwards in the back row and set up loungers on the ground and pillows in bed of the truck. Coolers of beer or drinks, snacks and the truck bed was for make out sessions. Capital drive in south of Tallahassee Florida 1974-1977
Just posted a similar comment! Remember when we would shove as many people in the big old trunk those 70’s battleships had back then, so you only had to pay for two people? And then the movie was like .50/piece.
Ha ha. We did that too back in the early 80s in Houston. 80F (26c) at 10 PM and 90% Humidity. You sweated your butt off and the mosquitoes were awful but it was still fun and cheap.
This video made me feel so nostalgic. Back in the day, when I was a child, one of my favorite things to do was go to the drive-in-movies. My Mom would make a grocery bag full of popcorn and a thermos filled with Koolaid. Then my siblings and I would be dressed in our pajamas. There were always at least two features. The first would be a family movie geared toward kids. The second movie could be anything. We all watched the first movie and then my siblings and I were expected to lay down and go to sleep. As I started getting older it got harder to go to sleep when my parents wanted me to. One night I pretended to go to sleep. After my siblings settled down I very quietly sat up and began to watch the second feature. It was the sci-fi movie called THE BLOB starring Steve McQueen. That movie scared the bejeezus out of me. To this day, when I think about that movie I still get the creeps. I'm glad you and Ach had such a good time. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.
Yes! The paper bag full of popcorn and a thermos of Kool-aid. 😜. I am a generation behind you but we had the same movie menu. We still have a drive-in near me and go there several times in the summer months. They still have the 2 movies, first feature more kid centered than the second. The food choices at the snack shack are incredible with everything from pizza and chicken to ice cream sundaes.
When I was little my family would go to the drive-in. My siblings and I would be in our pajamas, robes, and slippers so that we'd be ready for bed when we got home. Often they'd show a double feature, so it would be quite late by the time the movies ended. The 3 of us (the eldest 7 the last time we lived near a drive-in theater) would fall asleep in the back seat. We always snuck in popcorn from home. We kids would help make enough popcorn to fill a brown paper grocery bag and my dad would salt it and throw in a whole stick of butter which would be melted by the time we were ready to eat it. Until I saw it in a movie many years later, I never knew there were swings at drive-ins because it was usually dark when we got there so my parents didn't take us to play on them.
My city still has two drive- in movie theaters when I was young my family used to go during the summer months and watch the cartoons and the Disney movies and candy and popcorn. Good memories. During the pandemic the drive -in was used for graduation ceremonies the graduating students stood at the front of the car and their parents stood at the back and the school districts representative gave the students their diplomas and the students stood by their cars and threw their caps in the air .Crazy times we live in.
The American drive-in experience; 1. Smuggle a couple of friends inside in the trunk. 2. Park along the back fence to make out with your significant other or smoke weed. 3. Go to the refreshment stand during the movie to get more popcorn during a slow part of the movie and occasionally glance at the screen and try to read the lips of the characters on screen. 4. Get the extra large popcorn and soda and very carefully get it back to your car without spilling it. 5. Accidentally drive away with the speaker still attached to the car and rip the cord out of the post. That's why they use FM radios and frequencies today.
I've not yet read the comments but I am 100% certain a lot of us older American fans of yours are telling their stories about how we grew up with drive-in movie theaters! It was great back in the day, but we didn't have fun actors or a speaker delivered to us. We had to drive up to our speakers, LOL!! We also had to walk a farmer's mile to get to the concession stand for food and drink. I don't believe alcohol was served b/c many people were obviously driving, haha!! We'd bring pillows and blankets and some would come to the drive-in in their pick up trucks and lay in the bed of the truck watching the movie. This was FAN TASTIC!! Thanks Lia and Ach!! 💖

I enjoyed this soooo much! I love a Drive-in movie! So glad they are back! Went to my first in the 70s as a kid, then have been to a few the past two years since they came back! I’ve never seen characters walking around or played games in the car though. Seems like a fun addition! Thanks for taking us along. It’s put me in a good mood :)
Thanks for sharing. It has been over 40 years since I've been to a drive-in here in the US. I don't know if we have them anymore. You two looked like you were having so much fun.
We used to go to drive-ins all the time had one about 15 minutes from my house was so sad when they started closing so glad they’re reopening loved going when we were little kids and we’d make a bed in the back of my father’s truck. Your excitement over everything that’s going on is giving me life
Drive-ins in the US usually show 2 films or 3, or the ones I used to go to always did. The first movie was always a family-friendly movie or usually, it would be, and the second or even third one was a raunchy foreign film in English. That of course was back in the '70s. I was just a kid then. I really loved how excited you were to just have an American experience.
What a fun vlog to watch! So much fun. We only do drive-in theaters in the winter time here because it’s too hot here in Texas any other way. It’s a fun family tradition.
We used to go to a few by where we lived. Only 1 remains today and im not even sure if they're even open right now. Moved 4 hours south. Your theater looks awesome - ours never did that stuff - but they could be by now. Glad you had a great time

Drive Ins were the rage when I was growing up! There was a 4 screen drive in that we used to go to and in was a 1.50 a car full! Now there is only one that is in driving distance, 40 miles away.

I remember drive ins when I was a child. When they charged per person, teenagers would hide in the trunk (boot) to get in free. Later they charged by the car. Kids would wear their pajamas so they could just be carried to bed when they got home. It was a treat to get something from the concession stand. My favorite was a Chilly Dilly (a large cold dill pickle). The speaker was on a stand at the parking spot and you hung it on the inside of your rolled up window. Later they had heaters in the same way for winter nights. There were neighborhoods around and I know people watched the movies from home without sound, of course.
It is so cute to see you get so excited for the drive in we used to go every saturday nite through out the summer as kids. Go in our pjs and play in the playground before the movie and sneaking in our own treats. Hope you enjoyed your nite out
I was so shocked when I found out, literally today, that north america and Australia are the only places in the world with [permanent] drive-in theatres. Australia only has 17 of then in the entire continent.. There are 2 drive-in's within 10 minutes of my house in Ohio, and 7 of them within a 1 hour drive (one of them has laser-tag within the concession building 🙃) Some of my earliest memories were at the drive-in with my family. And still today, I go every other weekend. Especially for dates 😅 I have never experienced this specific type of feelbad emotion for the rest of the world. I thought everybody had drive-ins all around the world and this honestly made me want to cry 😢 I'm so happy I found your video though, and that you guys got to experience this.
We don't have many drive ins anymore. Not sure how they are now, but we used to have to get out of the car to go get our food/snacks/drinks. No ordering until you get there. Also, speakers used to hang on the door or window (if they were rolled up, but usually windows were open because it was hot.)
This is so fun, love how excited you were! I've only been to a drive-in once, but I got to see Jurassic Park (the OG) which was fantastic. That little Alabama drive-in wasn't nearly as fancy and upscale as this one though.
When I was a child, all us kids would get into our PJs, mom would pack up our supper, along with popcorn, and we would go to the drive-in for a family movie. It was so fun.
Dana says- Anyone remember the spiral mosquito incense? The boxy metal speakers hanging in the window? You and your sibling(s) going in your PJs. Begging the parental units for money for the concession stand? Such great memories.
We did a drive in this Summer. I hadn't done one in years since a lot of them have closed around here but a local baseball club turned their parking lot into a drive in since there wasn't a season yet.
“Frankie Says Relax” was the slogan on the promotional t shirt for the Liverpool band “Frankie Goes to Hollywood”. They were a 1 Hit Wonder with the song “Relax” in 1984. The song was featured on Friends “The One With The Tiny T Shirt” Season 3, episode 19.
We still have a drive in here in Reno. It's a swap meet during the day, I think. Best was when I was in HS back in 70s. That was Calif. Most of the car windows were fogged up to be honest! 😅😘
Usually our drive ins are not so fun with games, characters, and food delivery but they are a great fun. I’m 72 and as a kid my mom and grandma took us every month in the summer. We packed fried chicken soda and popcorn. We went in our pj’s and saw a double feature. Some of my fav memories. Love your channel and just got some Preseco because of you.. 😊
Drive-in theaters are not very popular these days in America. We have one in Georgia just south of city of Atlanta called the Starlight drive in. It is in a shady part of town and if you don’t mind the smell of weed it’s a different experience also the audio is through your car stereo.
Many large parking lots are being used as Drive-In Theaters during Covid. But, unlike back in the 60's where there was a speaker on a wire that you hung from your window, now they tell you to tune to a specific channel on your car's radio.
They used to be all over is the US, I think we only have 1 or 2 here in Oregon. The old trick was to pay for one or two of you and have like 10 of your friends (mates) in the trunk. Or you bring your pick up truck, go to your spot and back in and sit in the back of the truck bed in old lounge chairs. Drive in are perfect for pandemics.
There's a drive in about 45 minutes away. We try to go once or twice a summer. They do a double feature and have three screens. These days, they don't have the speakers on the pole anymore. They have an FM transmitter and you use your car stereo. When the kids are with us, we put chairs in front of the car and put a boom box in front of them.
I remember going to drive-ins when I was younger. We still have one where I live, you just tune your radio to a certain channel to listen to the movie. In the old days there was a speaker that you hung on your partially rolled up door window. Good memories. Also as teenagers we would hide people in the trunk (boot) to not pay for a ticket. We were awful.
Growing up as a kid in the 80’s my parents always took me to the Admiral Twin Drivein. For those who don’t know it was one of the filming locations for the movie The Outsiders. It burned to the ground in 2010, but was rebuilt better than ever. All of the other structures still exist though. It’s always a fun time to hit the Admiral Twin.
You two were so cute in this! What a fun evening. My hometown has a drive in still. It has two screens and they do 2 movies on each screen. During covid they have been showing alot of 80s and 90s movies.
You guys are an Amazing couple! Im happy that this generation has experienced drive-in theaters. I remember my first drive-in theater in 1981 or 1982, watched E.T. Tons of fun.
When I was a teenager the drive-in was a Sunday night ritual for my friends and me. I had a hatchback so I never snuck anyone in, but it was a regular occurrence. So many great memories.
Growing up in America, in a small town, every Summer the single screen indoor cinema would close down and the drive-in (on the outskirts of town) would open for the season. Everyone hung out there, whether you were there to watch a movie or not. You could sit in your car, but more often than not it would be on the hood (bonnet?) of the car, under the stars eating popcorn watching that big screen.
Lia , you bring joy me joy at how excited you are about the drive in movie. Relax don't do it when you want to go to it, Relax don't do it, when u want to come come... (release in 1983 by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, A British Band. Some of lyric are said to be of a sexual in nature and did cause some controversy back in the day, however here in America it was played alot and was one if my favorite 80's song, part if the British/Europe invasion, Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Rick Asley, Spandau Ballet,Dexy's Midnight Runners, Roxette,Soft Cell. I'm an 80's fan and a Zen Z..
I LOVE going to the drive in!! Our drive-ins around here were all booked this summer to be used for high school graduations because of the pandemic, so no drive-in movies for us this summer. 😞 I’m so glad you guys got to experience it!! (But ours don’t have delivery to your car, & you use your own car speakers.)
Drive in movies have virtually disappeared in the US. They were so great to go to. You could see the picture as you pulled into the parking lot but couldn't hear anything until you pulled the speaker off the post that held it and put it on your steering wheel. Later the sound of the movie would come thru your radio when you tuned to a special frequency. They had to change because people would cut the cord on the speaker and steal it.
Your Drive-in was better than ours. We had no pre shows and no deliveries and certainly no alcohol sold. We did have double and triple features.to watch. Most also had a mound for each row to raise the front of the car up to better see the screen.
I love the fact that drive-ins are making a comeback. It's a great family experience that brings people together everything from enjoying the film in your car to hitting the snack bar and watching a film Under the Stars everyone should experience this once
The last time i was at a Drive in Theater was in 1975 at a location in Maryland here in the States. I took my Father's car without his permission and came very close to getting it stuck in the mushy parking lot. He never did find out, much to my relief. There are not too many of them left in the States, but every once in a while someone will open one up and try to give it a go. In the times we are in, a Drive in Theater might be a good alternative to packing people into a movie theater.
Dana says- What a fabulous time. If we had things like this (with the games & actors, etc.) in the US, I bet they could revive drive-ins. Especially with theaters being closed for so long due to covid.
We have legit old school drive inns in Utah, the stalls are slanted so that your not looking at the back of the car in front and they use to have the speakers on the poles you'd put in your window but now it's all broadcast and you can listen through your car speakers, best way is to take a truck and load bean bags in the bed and bring your own food and drinks.
So glad you went and had a good time. As a child, we went every other week, played up at the playground until dark and then ate candy and popcorn and watched a Disney movie or an Alfred Hitchcock film. Such fun!
omg i wanna do this so bad! Its SO American!

@@johnlabus7359 But they're not really American, nor will they become American, so I used the British term. So excuuuuuuuuuse me.

It is so cute to see you get so excited for the drive in we used to go every saturday nite through out the summer as kids. Go in our pjs and play in the playground before the movie and sneaking in our own treats. Hope you enjoyed your nite out
So fun!!!!
this was so much fun to watch, we use to go to the drive in all them time when I was a kid
I was so shocked when I found out, literally today, that north america and Australia are the only places in the world with [permanent] drive-in theatres. Australia only has 17 of then in the entire continent.. There are 2 drive-in's within 10 minutes of my house in Ohio, and 7 of them within a 1 hour drive (one of them has laser-tag within the concession building 🙃)
Some of my earliest memories were at the drive-in with my family. And still today, I go every other weekend. Especially for dates 😅
I have never experienced this specific type of feelbad emotion for the rest of the world. I thought everybody had drive-ins all around the world and this honestly made me want to cry 😢 I'm so happy I found your video though, and that you guys got to experience this.
Lia, I don’t think you have had me laughing this much ever before! Great vlog!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it x
We don't have many drive ins anymore. Not sure how they are now, but we used to have to get out of the car to go get our food/snacks/drinks. No ordering until you get there. Also, speakers used to hang on the door or window (if they were rolled up, but usually windows were open because it was hot.)
This is so fun, love how excited you were! I've only been to a drive-in once, but I got to see Jurassic Park (the OG) which was fantastic. That little Alabama drive-in wasn't nearly as fancy and upscale as this one though.
So lovely! Made me smile! Brought up lots of memories of summers at the drive-in.
When I was a child, all us kids would get into our PJs, mom would pack up our supper, along with popcorn, and we would go to the drive-in for a family movie. It was so fun.
Lived next to a drive-in. Abbeville, LA. Corbett.
Dana says- Anyone remember the spiral mosquito incense? The boxy metal speakers hanging in the window? You and your sibling(s) going in your PJs. Begging the parental units for money for the concession stand? Such great memories.
I worked at one when I was very young, one of the best times of my life.
Lia, you expressions are just sooo hilarious.
There are still 2 drive ins where I live. One country and one city. My husband and I have been going since we started dating.
Is that really called Starlite drvie-in? That is the name of the drive-in in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas.
We have a Starlite in Christiansburg and another called Hulls in Lexington Virginia.
Relax (official video): ua-cam.com/video/Yem_iEHiyJ0/v-deo.html (also worth watching Zoolander, as the song is key to the climax)
We did a drive in this Summer. I hadn't done one in years since a lot of them have closed around here but a local baseball club turned their parking lot into a drive in since there wasn't a season yet.
How fun! Thanks for sharing!
You’d win any pop quiz Seth
We still have a drive in here in Reno. It's a swap meet during the day, I think.
Best was when I was in HS back in 70s. That was Calif. Most of the car windows were fogged up to be honest! 😅😘
Usually our drive ins are not so fun with games, characters, and food delivery but they are a great fun. I’m 72 and as a kid my mom and grandma took us every month in the summer. We packed fried chicken soda and popcorn. We went in our pj’s and saw a double feature. Some of my fav memories. Love your channel and just got some Preseco because of you.. 😊
What a good time! I haven’t been to a drive in movie since I was little. And everything has evolved! Oh I hope we get some in NE Kansas! ✨🎥 🍿✨
In Canada...huge dill pickles were sold at the concession booth. Ohhh...sooo good!
We had those in central Florida as well, when I was a kid.
We did in Texas too.
Greetings from SoCal. Nothing like a Drive-In-Movie... in the rain... with the wiper blades on😆😂 Hope it was a double feature, at least. Cheers.
I live a few miles from the Drive-In in Newberg, Oregon. Really fun experience to go there.
Ok, you’ve just made me feel geet old when you didnt know Frankie says Relax, but then realised that was over 35 years ago 😬
Same here GD. Remember how that song played on this thing called a radio 24 hours a day?
I remember when it came out!!!
I saw them in concert 1985 in Houston.
Still one of the most not so subliminally risque' songs ever to get so high on the charts. "When you gonna come?!"
That looks so fun! I’m glad you guys got to get out and do something new!
😂 this was so fun to watch. Looks like you two had a blast.
Aww thanks Ani x
Brings back fun memories! We always pulled in backwards so we could lay down in the back of the pickup truck or van.
Wow, that looked so campy and fun. I love to win things too. I wish our drive inn's in the US were like yours. Enjoied your video!
I live in New Hampshire and my town still has a drive in .
I'm in NH as well. The closest drive in is just over the line into ME.
Love drive inns .
Assuming they don't have drive ins in the UK? Love em and hoping they make a comeback.
I like it. Can’t wait. :).
Great video as always lovely Lia!!! ❤👍🏻 I have never been to a drive in cinema this one looks great!!!
Yay! Love drive ins 😃
I love that they have you a speaker to use! We have a drive in close , but we listen through a radio station.
This was fun to watch. I've never seen games like that at a drive in before.
Dana says- What a fabulous time. If we had things like this (with the games & actors, etc.) in the US, I bet they could revive drive-ins. Especially with theaters being closed for so long due to covid.
Love the drive-in!!
Yay now I can see what it's like from one of my faves lol I was considering going this August with my bf but not sure if it's worth the hour drive...
Such fun!
