Let’s not forget that France has numerous overseas territories, like French Polynesia, Martinique, and Guadeloupe, which attract their fair share of tourists. These visitors contribute to the overall number of tourists counted for France each year.
So it's a difference between the country calling itself an Empire (e.g. British Empire, Roman Empire, French, German) versus just conquering and administering a lot of territory (e.g. America, China)
And dont forget about colonies. If nations like china, russia, USA, they integrate those region as their core region. Well.. Except for USA i guess. USA do have the name of "overseas teritory" thingy. USA is weird case indeed here. If it's china or russia, it's more understandable. It's all part of them. No colony
@@DBT1007 It can easily get very technical. They call them colonies but it meant taking land from native inhabitants. China and Russia have rarely strayed beyond the territory that extends from their Capital. Islands nearby, sure, but they often had some definition of easy access to their other territories. Thinking of the Soviet Union's Eastern Bloc territories. But then it can get really technical because then we're talking about alliances rather than legal countries. It's funny when Americans try to say that winning territory in wars isn't the same when they do it compared to when those traditional Empires did it. I guess the main factor is whether people from the homeland were sent to the overseas territories to populate it with the ethnicity of choice. I could be wrong but America doesn't have a history of sending white Americans to Hawaii, etc. as part of a program to ethnically Americanise a region.
I’m genuinely concerned what people even think when they mean empire when they talk to the USA especially hidden like there is nothing really hidden about USA military and bases and land territory not to mention allies and spheres of influence it’s literally impossible to hide that.
"hidden" as in... they dont want to recognize themselves as "empire". Just like typical commie nations that call themselves "democratic" like north korea.. 😅
Also just the straight up colonialization of various nations (Philippines, Panama, Hawaii, if you want to go further back the entire western 2/3sd, etc.)
12:12 as a german i can say that makes more sense then you think, Japan is culturally a different world, but not only because of WW2 but also because of an long history beteen the countrys and the fact that many germans are obsessed with japan and many japanes are obsessed with germany
One of my teachers said that a compromise for renaming the Gulf of Mexico was to name it to the Gulf of Americo. Teach is basically a comedian, so I'll give him that.
Logistically speaking: An empire is when one more foreign powerful political nation takes control of other political nation or nations without making them be apart of their nation, aka a process known as vassalization. Back during World War 2, the U.S. was most definitely an empire, and what got us into the war was an attack on a military base on one of our vassals, Hawaii.
Thailand is extremely dubious to go visit. Haven't heard a single regular thing about that place thats interesting

Lyons, Orlean, Tours, those are probably other French towns that get visited by tourists. Orlean especially, since this is where Jean D'arc was born, so pilgrims visit.
5:34 turkey has a lot of tourist cause it in a part of the world where people realy love the European culture and the closest one is turkey, like i live in iran and every week i heat a few people from my familt went to turkey
5:56 perhaps that's a phenomenon in France and Central Europe, but where I live (a town near Barcelona), most of the tourists come from the UK, Russia (yes, Russia), Germany (not as many in recent years) and Central Europe, but then A LOT (and I mean a lot) of Asians and Americans (specially from Latin America, but also some from the US and Canada). Most of our tourists don't come just from the nearby countries (some do, but they're a minority). In my opinion I'd prefer if tourists were mostly from nearby places (geographically and culturally), as they're usually more respectful and less loud (as they tend to respect the culture they're in more, if it resembles their own / they identify with it more).
3:11 im hispanic btw and i live like in a City in mexico name Ciudad Juárez named after the president Benito Juárez was there to protect him self in te civil war (not the mexican revolution in 1910)... WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY. In here in the North we cald The river, "El río Bravo" for some reason
I think Slovenia would also be very high. I was there on vacation four times and was able to find more people who spoke German than English. In swimming beds there were often things written in Slovenian and German. Personally I would put it in 4th or 5th place.
3:16 There is a coastal port city in Croatia which is called river in Croatian and Italian, literally just river in the respective languages. The city is on a river as well (shocking, I know), the river is called B I G R I V E R (again, both in Croatian and Italian).
Gulf of America is actually a generalist term than the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico is still part of the Americas. Since it is shared between US and Mexico, then I think Gulf of America seems right.
06:19 it makes perfect sense cause most people travelling to Thailand takes flight to Bangkok, then it is from there they take bus, train, boat or taxi to destinations like Phuket. China and India are very close to Thailand, so it is very easy for them to attract Chinese and Indians. And for Indians dont need a visa for short-term stays ( I don't know about China). So it makes perfect sense. Bangkok and Thailand are really high up that list
American here, it's not hidden we're an empire. We're just the least evil one, in the sense that we bring freedom and mostly let the territories rule themselves with the exeption of our national territory laws and a rather small(to scale of the territory's total economy) protection fee.
Russia and china are both active empires as well. The ranking of evil empires from least to most is (every empire is evil to some degree that is fact, not opinion) U.S., Russia, China.
German Here (part German at least), it’s a shame Luxembourg and Liechtenstein weren’t included because I definitely think those numbers would be very high, and I wouldn’t have been too surprised to see Czechia or Slovenia to have moderately high percentages considering a significant shared history and culture. Poland is shockingly low but it might be a regional divide, id say those living in East Germany especially like Mecklenburg Verpommen probably are considerably more likely to see Poland and Czechia as similar to Germany
