Especially because they get 70k per year to "work" for 40 games in a season that lasts May 19 to Sept. 10. That's 4 months, with an average of 10 games per month. And they are given a house and a car, so they don't even pay rent. All of this happens while they have never, ever turned a profit in viewership. They already have easier lives than 99% of people on the planet. I wish we'd just stop subsidizing the WNBA and let them go bankrupt. Just get rid of the pointless thing that nobody watches anyway.

Especially when you consider the fact that the wnba is nothing but daycare that the NBA is paying for. These women are overpaid if anything. They should split the money from tickets and audience but instead they’re basically asking the NBA to pay them EVEN MORE money than their worth.
well it is to an extent, in which i mean, they have a limited lifespan what 10 years and then they have sacrificed an actual worthwhile career and will be waiting tables for the rest of their lives. It's not early retirement money and most of them will be unemployed by the time they are 30
I remember when I was a kid, my pops took me to a WNBA game. I had never been to one before, and when we arrived, I asked him two questions: "can we sit anywhere we want?" and "is this a practice game?" Because the entire stadium was empty aside from us and the players. From what I've seen, nothing has changed 20 years later.

They don't care they get more, undeservedly, than most people for doing far less. They care that they aren't paid the same as legends that bring in tens of millions after lifelong careers, all without ever having to achieve anything similar.

Imagine sponsorships ontop of that and i bet the stars like her is bringing in millions.
Funny thing, most sports in the world dont even pay 70k dolars a year... so for example Cross Country skiing last year Frida Karlsson was the highest earning female at 160k and the 10th best woman (Nadine Feandrich) made 75k.
The women who never place on the podium make somewhere around 30-40k at best during a whole season.
The top earning man (Johannes Klaebo) earned 380k BUT the 2nd highest man only made 180k (Pål Golberg) and the 10th place man ONLY made 48k which is LESS then the 10th female.
The only reason Klaebo is so much higher is cause he wins 9.9/10 sprints and like 60-70% of the distance races.
The women have more competition and thus have much more even distribution in earnings.
Biathlon is the exact same with women making slightly less at the extremes but more evenly distributed at the top 10 vs men beeing higher at the extremes and less even below #1 because theres Johannes Tinges Bö who wins 60-70% of all races and places top 3 in 90% of races vs women having a broader Top 3 with somewhere around 15 girls sharing the podium for a season vs maybe 6-7 men sharing it.

Yeah there are just some things some sexes are just better at. Anything athletic or something that requires physical labour is always going to promote man more than women while anything beauty and care related will always promote women in their ads. Hence it’s simply whatever gender contributes the most to their company and some jobs have more of a benefit for one gender rather than the other.

Indiana Fever tickets has spiked and season tickets rose significantly partly due to CC and support from her fans along with little boys and girls. 7k fans alone showed up to her draft party at her stadium. Even her jersey and merchandise are pretty hard to find. They now even have sports bars opening up that only show Women's Sports partly due to the Caitlin Clark effect. 36 out of 40 Indiana Fever's games are nationally televised.

US Census Bureau says there's 166.7 M females to 161.7 M males in the US. Women can really support women's sport like the NBA, but sadly, there aren't that many that care for sports, let alone women's sport.

Not that you are wrong, but tot do need to take into account that women sports were banned for decades. And ironically, they were banned for being too popular (the men were afraid they would lose revenue if people preferred women games). So obviously there is not a huge fanbase. It's a catch 22: you don't broadcast it because it's not popular, and because you don't broadcast it, it won't become popular.
@@annekekramer3835 The WNBA have problems finding a good TV deal to actually broadcast it. TV channels rather air some TV show because they make more money of that. It has bin considered to just air WNBA for free via streaming instead of airing on TV because of this.

Remember when this happened with women's soccer? Then everyone learnt that the players actually got offered the exact same contract as the men but they traded their royalties and winnings away for additional health benefits and flat wages.
I mean hey, if they want the health benefits and a consistent wage, they can go for it, if they want to shoulder the risk that gets them paid more, they can choose that separately, but they didn't, so they can't really complain imo
What’s funny about that is they now split the World Cup bonuses. The men’s soccer team is pretty ass. We’re lucky if we even qualify for the cup. The women’s team is phenomenal (expect last time) and usually win or go far. So now when the men’s team inevitably doesn’t qualify or lose first round the women’s bonus from them doing well is split up and sent to the men’s.
The men’s get much higher bonuses for advancing in the cup, but we can’t even qualify lately so ya 😂 thanks ladies.

The only women sports which men are watching is sometimes the women swimming and beach volleyball... but if you look at what the women are wearing you see why men are watching.
I’m a guy and I’m not a huge sports person personally. The sports I do like watching though is Hockey and Racing. The reason why I like watching them is the same as why a Roman would go to the colosseum. Did you know they have a named penalty for slicing someone with your skates? It’s like a street fighter move

It's honestly baffling to me how some people wanted to enter into a niche market and then complaints when they don't get the numbers they think they deserve from the audiences who weren't interested in the first place. For example: Video games, superhero movies/cartoons, some sports, and some other forms of entertainment.
And blaming your potential audiences/consumers(even current active audiences/consumers) for their lack of interest is even more baffling.

these people just don't make the connection, they just see that one person is paid more than an other for doing the same thing and think it's unfair. but without considering the bigger picture.
It's actually quite interesting because you'd think that watching fit athletic women would be quite popular, especially among men, but it turns out that this only works for a very small subset of sports. If they want to make the same money, all they have to do is let them into the men's leagues and see how they fare there. I'm sure that would go well.
I don't really agree with this one even though I used to think the same. In mu country, in just some years, Women's Football (soccer) has become extremely important. And the only thing it needed was a bit more of promotion and better salaries for players so they could have a stable income and focus on training. They've even won the world's championship. It's crazy what little changes can accomplish

The issue is that Caitlin Clark is a rising star in women's basket. The viewership of college women basketball DOUBLED when she started playing. Because of her Women's College Basket was MORE popular than Men's. Do you fucking get it? She made women's basket more popular than men's and she's gonna earn 76k??? Eh, it's not a big deal because she's probably gonna make massive bank from sponsors etc. but I think someone with potential to finally pull WNBA out of being subsidized by NBA should get more.

Also, Clark has yet to play a single game in the WNBA so she's getting paid what she should be. That being said, I heard she'll be signing a big deal with Nike that will pay her millions and she'll have her own shoe which is a huge and positive thing for women's sports in general.

Although I am curious what does it mean to be 100% subsidized by NBA. I saw this claim multiple times and don't understand it maybe because I just don't get how exactly funding for WNBA works. From my understanding NBA absolutely does not cover all WNBA expenses which being 100% subsidized entails. Am I misunderstanding something?

Making 70k playing a fucking game is plenty. That's a good wage and all you're doing is playing a sport you love. Obviously it's competitive, but the reality is that sports players are not important and don't really deserve the pay they get. The NBA only pays so much because they rake in ridiculous amounts of money. But ultimately, NBA players are not important. They make orders of magnitude more money than someone playing a game should already.

The sports team are the product....when your product doesn't sell well you don't get money...their is no uneven pay going on. Your given equal chance...if people truly believed in you getting paid more they would show up and buy tickets but they dont.

The games and merchandise go to the players mostly,
The WNBA operates on a loss and is payed by the NBA to exist,
If they boycott it they are asking for it to stop existing,
And 76k a year minimum is WAY MORE than liveable and that is only the first year where it is lowest.

Technically there IS a pay gap if you actually looked at the numbers for yourself. The amount of revenue that the WNBA generates (NONE, the league is 100% paid for by the NBA) vs the amount women get paid for playing in the WNBA you’ll see that they actually make a disproportionate amount of money. Women in the WNBA get paid *MORE* than men do by percentages. Men make all the money but millions every single year since the inception of the WNBA goes straight towards keeping the WNBA afloat. They’re basically giving women above average salaries just for participation and the women are complaining that they’re not being *given* enough. 🤦♂️ ridiculous and ungrateful

In germany, the 2nd mans handball leauge is obviusly not as much viewd as the first one. But i believe still more then the WNBA.
Most players dont get a living wage out of just playing handball, and thats why local companys, who sponsor a team, give players a great job offer to join the team.
Like, Handball alone will give them 1k/ month but they get also a job offer for 2,5k a month with very flexible work hours and payed time off for reached milestones. They basically work 2 Jobs just so they can play professional.
And these women complain about being paid a living wage for nothing.

The GM at casino I work at is a women, so unless there's a super important match, its usually the female sports playing on the tv's. We have customers constantly asking us to change the channels because they want to see real sports. Sometimes when I'm standing at the front desk with nothing else to do but to watch the tv across the hall, I'm stuck watching the women sports. I kid you not, I have seen free shots being missed by a mile, women just walking with the ball without dribbling for half the court without getting flagged, its even worse with the female hockey. I remember a match where 3 goals were scored because the goalie was not paying attention to the match, looking at the wrong area on the ice, or straight up talking with one of her teammate that was leaning against the net. Its sad that feminists online want these people to have the same pay as the men's team.

Lulw, that was my reaction to the first match of NBA I watched. In Europe, heck, even in American College basket the rules on travelling are practically always enforced. I think there's some rule of cool in NBA and gigantic focus on fast tempo of games above all else, even the rules.

I think with how good the women's march madness was this year, theres marketing opportunities the WNBA could take, as a lot of these kids have already made a name for themselves in college. Although with sports media being so tied up in TV i doubt that will be the case.
