📲 Our Pick Up Limes app is finally here (1-week free trial!): bit.ly/PUL_app 🎉... I also can’t believe it’s already been 5 years! 🥳 Thank YOU for being here with us and showing your support over the years 💛 suuuper grateful!
The amount of effort that you put in EACH of your videos is unbelievably amazing. They feel like actual film quality and every one of your recipes I've tried has been the best dish I've made of that kind... Can't wait for the launch of the PUL app! Congratulations on 5 years, Sadia and team PUL. You are totally making a huge difference in the world ❤️ in helping promote veganism in a healthy manner free from any sort of criticism... Thank you all so much 💖
Your comparison of the milk was really cool! I’d love to know more about the science of cooking and how you chose ingredients that marry each other as I’m sure that’s a lot of testing!
I lost my mother very recently... I may need you to heal now. This was beautiful, intelligent, caring, and loving, just like Ma. Thank you, Sadia, for all the love and effort you put in to everything.
I made this cake and was skeptical about putting fruit on it because I'd need to store it in the fridge, but I can say it is even BETTER out the fridge the next day. The chocolate buttercream sets up so nicely and it cuts so clean. I'm making this one again for my own birthday this year!
Sadia, for all of us "Carnivores" who love our veggies I thank you. I have been watching you for years and I love how you have taken vegetables to a new level. I'm not rushing out to totally go vegan but reducing my meat intake and replacing it with an amazing veggie dish is working out for me and my friends. Plus... how you explain techniques and products helps my friends see clearly how to execute your dishes with ease. Pease keep sending out videos , they're great, David.
Yass David! Not fully vegan either but always looking to eat mostly plant based. We need more people like you to have better nutrition and help save the planet. 😍😍
@@MsReegee I'm an already 95% vegan and 100% lacto vegetarian... I do aspire to become 100 percent vegan tho.. I'm sure I'll get there.. Loved how you went the extra mile to explain the ingredients vs. substitutions! I learned several helpful tips about baking in general from this video. I'll be making this for my little boy's 3rd birthday next week, thank you!
I made this cake a week ago for my daughter's birthday. And it’s perfect! it’s a pity that there was no video at that time, but I did it according to the recipe from the blog. Thank you so much, Sadia!!
Hello, I am writing to you from Turkey. I am a dietitian. I made the recipe. It was so good that I served it to my family. Thank you very much!!!! I learned how the protein in vegetable milks will affect the recipes. I had almond milk but replaced it with soy. I changed the recipe to gluten-free. It was a mixture of rice flour and cornstarch. Moreover, I did not change other materials at all. Thank you very much....
This is soooo helpful. I never have soy milk on hand so anytime a recipe calls to make buttermilk I use almond or coconut and have always felt like it wasn’t curdling right. I’ve never had real buttermilk so I wasn’t sure exactly what the consistency is suppose to be.
For non-vegan cooking, I sub 1/4 cup plain yogurt + 3/4 cup milk for each cup of buttermilk. You can do this with vegan yogurt and vegan milk as well. Buttermilk is the by product of making butter then fermented with live cultures to thicken so that’s what the yogurt there for. Adding vinegar or lemon juice to milk can work in a pinch but I highly recommend using my method!
This cake was amazing. Made it for Mother's Day my whole family absolutely loved it. When I told my husband it had no dairy or eggs he couldn't believe it. The tip about only the soy and pea protein based milks curdling was so helpful. Thank you!!!!!!!
Looks amazing! Perfect timing too! My mom’s birthday is coming up and she loves chocolate cake. Definitely going to make this! I also appreciate that you explain the science behind the ingredients 😊
Love this video! The milk demo was awesome! Thank you❤️ can I leave out baking soda out of the recipe? & can I use less sugar? If so, will it affect the size of the cakes?
Very impressive communication on this one. The last 1/2 decade has paid off in many skills leveling up. Thank you for your time and all you do, I appreciate you!
Used this recipe along with your vanilla to make vegan wedding cakes as there were quite a few vegans attending a family wedding. There was also a non vegan cake made by a professional. I tweaked the chocolate with raspberry too and to the vanilla I added lemon. Both were a huge success and much complemented. Many non vegans preferred them.
Do you remember how you added the Raspberry? Was it fresh, extract? How much? Would love if you could share. My fav combo is raspberry with chocolate. Would like to try. Thank you!
@SoTresTres I used freeze dried raspberries (which I powered in mortar and pestle and removed seeds) in the sponge. Added some sieved raspberry jam to my simple syrup to add moisture to sponge and in the two filling layers I had sieved homemade raspberry jam inside dam layered with chocolate buttercream (made with plant based butter).
I plan on making this for my class at the end of my quarter. I’m not vegan but I always make a vegan cake in case someone is vegan. I’ll probably experiment with the recipe and try to make it gluten and sugar free as well
I absolutely LOVE that you explain why you choose some ingredients over others, why you perform the techniques you do, and the science behind all of it. Totally makes sense. Dear Sadia and the Pick up Limes Team. Thank you so much for this recipe. I've just made it for my mothers wake. I rarely brave a recipe I've not tried before, but it came out perfect. I was told it really raised the mood after the mundane sandwiches that were provided by the other caterers. Sending love & gratitude. x
Wow this cake looks amazing! Might be doing it for my birthday next month. I love how you add these additional information about the ingredients. I would never have used soy milk, because we usually don’t have it at home. But I’ll definitely keep in mind buying it when I plan on making this cake! So thank you for your high quality, informative and aesthetic videos and of course the awesome recipes!

Bravo! It’s so surprising that an eggless cake comes out so spongy and wet, and well risen, whereas for many non vegans it’s a challenge to get such cake using eggs. Special thumbs up for decor - simple, concise but so refreshing to even look at it!❤
OMG 🔥This is perhaps the best cooking/baking explainer video ever. Very enjoyable to watch in terms of atmosphere/education level and inspiration for baking in the first place.

I felt in love I’m never going back to regular chocolate cake lol 😂 besides of getting multiple compliments on my non existing baking skills everyone LOVED IT including myself. I made this recipe for my DIY backyard wedding in August. Utterly fantastic!! (The cake and the wedding😊🎉 ) And I made a cupcake version for the belated large reception in October as well! They were a huge hit and an easy of the cake for a crowd! This was my first experience with vegan baking! Thanks for the video and all you do! Congrats on your DIY wedding this year as well! ❤😊
Wow!!! Best Chocolate Cake EVER!! I made this for my son's birthday and we also bought a vanilla cake from the vegan bakery - Paid ($70) and I can honesty say it was not worth it. Our guests love this chocolate cake....so GOOD!! I will make this one again! YUM!!
I love chocolate cake and when she explains the why part of adding each ingredient to it.. feels like the cake has become chocolatier 😘❤️❤️❤️ Happy 5th🥳🎉
Wouw this looks absolutely delicious 🥰 . Is there a better way to celebrate 5 years of PUL than with chocolate? 😍 Also it helps so much that Sadia explains the how's and why's when it is comming to the ingrediënts! Thank you 🤗
I love this recipe! It’s delicious and 🤩. (If anybody wants to make this gluten-free, I have had huge success using Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 gf baking flour. Made it for a friend’s wedding.) Edit: I love how you are using ATK’s #1 recommended cocoa powder 👍
Made the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for my daughter's 13th birthday and I have to say that it was the best vegan cake I've ever made! Even my non-vegan mother agreed that you would never know it was vegan. Perfect flavor, perfect crumb, perfect frosting consistency that doesn't melt and break down, moist.....can't say enough good things! Thanks for the recipes!
Wow!!! Has it been five years already?!! Your expertise and everything you put into your work is TRULY inspirational!!! I hope you don't mind, but I "PITCHED" you to The Food Network channel because we need foods/science like yours!!! Felicitations!!!
Hi, just wanna to thank you for this amazing recipe! My daughter is allergic to egg white and I’ve been searching for a good recipe of sponge cake for a long time. I tried this one with a bit change and it turned perfect! I made a Black Forest cake for her birthday and she loves it! Thank you again!
5 years! No!!! It can't be that long ( I suddenly feel older) And yes!!!! Love that we can celebrate with you :-) Thanks for all that you do, all that you are and for always informing, entertaining and most of all providing us with delicious recipes!!
I'm so glad you explained WHY you picked what milk and oil you used- baking is so specific and a science like you said! Haven't baked much since going vegan bc most recipes wouldn't include these details but I'm definitely saving this one for a special day!
I made this cake, just yesterday, as a test for my wife's upcoming birthday. It's delicious 😋 I've never been a confident baker (except for bread, pastry, and Yorkshire puddings), but the guide was easy to follow, especially as I've only recently started eating a vegan diet. One thing, though, I did forget to add the oil, but the cake was still amazing, so I dare say you could leave it out; it will still be moist. I topped mine with vanilla icing and sprinkled dessicated coconut. Thank you so much, Sadia 😙
Happy Anniversary! Thanks so much for all that you do. Your explanation on the plant based mills and curdling was immensely helpful. Wishing for many more years of Pick Up Limes!
This cake is the best cake I’ve ever tried. It’s my go-to together with the vanilla cake. It’s so interesting to see you making it abs giving all those little tips beyond what is instructed on the website. Thank you ♥️♥️♥️ Two things I used to modify: 1) I’m caffeinate free so I tried decaf or simply water (both are good) 2) almond milk (now I want to try soy milk) 3) avocado oil (but I see you point, it does come out crumbly so it’s harder to coat with icing)
You are an amazing person, nutritionist, teacher, advocate, mentor, and chef......Thank you for over coming your fears and guiding me on this journey the last 5 years! ❤
I can honestly say that this is the best cake I have made. Followed the instructions exactly and it tastes amazing. Don’t miss the egg or the milk at all. My favorite recipe from pick up limes
Love this recipe. So moist!! I didn’t have applesauce so I substitute for smash bananas! I little banana flavor but the result was great! Thank you for the recipe
Watching each video of PUL, especially on a chocolate cake is a real therapy for a tired soul ☺️. You're kind of celebrating every single bit of ingredients you use that I am eating just with my eyes. Thank you for existing so beautifully. And thank for explaining things I never had a clue of (like cacao vs cocoa ; I always thought cocoa was a wrong spelling of coco. Shame on me 😂)
Oof this looks so incredible! Can’t believe it’s been 5 years, I remember finding your videos when you just started! Content and quality have always been amazing but really have grown over the years! Lots of love! ❤️
I love videos like that, where you tell us more about what ingredients were used and why! It gives us a really interesting look into the recepie-making-process. Thank you and your team so much!!
Congratulations to 5 years PUL! I cannot wait to make this cake and I am really enjoying that you're letting your, what I like to call, silly, festive personality shine through!
nobody told us to use only soy or pea milk but this beautiful brainy lady did! I am ever so grateful for you! you are so logical and this makes so much sense!
This was amazing thank you so much! The instructions are clear and the recipe is easy to follow! I made this for my moms birthday and she absolutely loved it, cooking/baking is not my strongest suit but i really wanted to make her something special, i tried my best and followed your instructions to a T and it turned out great! she is on a gluten free dairy free egg free diet so this was perfect i just used gluten free flour replacement instead of normal flour, its so moist, dense and chocolaty its amazing! Thanks again!
This was the most delicious chocolate cake ever, I baked it twice, once with frosting, and once without, and loved them both ( maybe the one without frosting even more) I baked it for my birthday
I feel relieved now that I can use this recipe to bake cake for my son, who's allergic to dairy. Thanks for explaining the science behind every ingredient.
Wow, just amazing how I learn so many new things with each video of yours, Sadia! I am so happy to know that I have been following you and your happy videos for 5yrs now, gosh you exude so much of positivity. Congratulationsssss! ❤💕
Happy five years! I’ve been watching you for two years now and really can’t believe it. I didn’t think I cared about the reasoning behind the ingredients but you made it so interesting. Also this cake looks delicious, I’ll have to try it soon
THANK YOU for taking the time to teach about the chemistry of ingredients. i’ve ruined so many recipes by unknowingly subbing ingredients that should not be subbed out!!
Thank you so much! I'm going to attempt this recipe for my son's upcoming birthday this month; he is also vegan. I only have a camping oven but even if it won't look so great, I'm confident that it will taste amazing!
I love Pick Up Limes! I've been a subscriber for 2-3 years and I always thoroughly enjoyed not only the content of each of videos but also the positive vibes as well. You can tell these videos were made out of enjoyment. This cake looks amazing and I can't wait to try it. I appreciate the plant milk demonstration too. Happy 5 year anniversary on UA-cam!!
wow. looks absolutely amazing. I use a very similar recipe and realised by trial and error that the best milk for this cake is the thickest, so either soy or pea. the presentation is stunning. i will be looking at the vanilla cake as I havent been able to master vegan vanilla cake. always comes out a bit wrong..
I have a trusted chocolate cake recipe I use but I might be trying this one next time because it simply looks incredible! I am sure that all the tips and tricks you gave us during this video make for an absolutely spectacular result. The choice of oil, the stirring technique, the combination of chocolate+cocoa for the buttercream or even the paper tip for the frosting step are something I have not thought about and they must make a huge difference! . Thank you for all these years of your work! We love you and appreciate the effort you put into creating content for us! Have a wonderful end of the week!
Just made this cake it is AMAZING ⭐️ Thank you. The cake is moist and I couldn’t stop licking the frosting. Well done team 👏🏾 absolutely worth all the effort!
Congratulations Sadia and Pick Up Limes!!! Your videos have changed my life! Would you consider doing a video about your method to developing recipes? There’s so many things I want to try making, but don’t know where to start! Thank you!!!

YUM!!
🎂 Congratulations to 5 super successful years on UA-cam! 🥳 Love your energy and passion!
She seems genuinely happy, unlike pretend happy like many people on social media.
I love chocolate cake and when she explains the why part of adding each ingredient to it.. feels like the cake has become chocolatier 😘❤️❤️❤️
Happy 5th🥳🎉
5 years all ready! And look how much those beautiful house plants have grown. Such great explanations throughout this recipe. Thank you!
Wouw this looks absolutely delicious 🥰 . Is there a better way to celebrate 5 years of PUL than with chocolate? 😍
Also it helps so much that Sadia explains the how's and why's when it is comming to the ingrediënts! Thank you 🤗
I've been a vegan since 2018 and your recipes have made the transition so much easier. I'm here for another 5 years and more. Congrats
I love this recipe! It’s delicious and 🤩. (If anybody wants to make this gluten-free, I have had huge success using Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 gf baking flour. Made it for a friend’s wedding.)
Edit: I love how you are using ATK’s #1 recommended cocoa powder 👍
oooh brilliant, thanks so much for sharing about how to make it GF, Katherine! And thanks for making it for a wedding, how exciting! 💗
Thank you !
Thank you. I needed the Gluten Free version. Have you tried to use a sugar substitute like Stevia or Monkfruit successfully?
Congratulations! PUL is preschool age now! I appreciate the science behind the recipe. And the videography, the framing, the background! *Chef's kiss*
I love the extra tips in the video. They were so helpful for the cake consistency. Amazing recipe, thank you!!
Aww haha I love the vote of confidence, Wiley, thank you! ☺️
I appreciate you going into detail about the ingredients. You showed me things I didn’t know before. Thank you!
I made this cake, just yesterday, as a test for my wife's upcoming birthday.
It's delicious 😋
I've never been a confident baker (except for bread, pastry, and Yorkshire puddings), but the guide was easy to follow, especially as I've only recently started eating a vegan diet.
Love how you’re telling us why to you use certain ingredients and the instructions… can’t wait to try to make this
This cake is the best cake I’ve ever tried. It’s my go-to together with the vanilla cake. It’s so interesting to see you making it abs giving all those little tips beyond what is instructed on the website. Thank you ♥️♥️♥️
Two things I used to modify:
1) I’m caffeinate free so I tried decaf or simply water (both are good)
2) almond milk (now I want to try soy milk)
3) avocado oil (but I see you point, it does come out crumbly so it’s harder to coat with icing)
Yayyy! So glad you've enjoyed both cake recipes, Yulia! 🥰
@@PickUpLimes I have a question, can you taste the applesauce in the final cake result?
You are an amazing person, nutritionist, teacher, advocate, mentor, and chef......Thank you for over coming your fears and guiding me on this journey the last 5 years! ❤
All your videos are so well-produced and aesthetic😍
I can honestly say that this is the best cake I have made. Followed the instructions exactly and it tastes amazing. Don’t miss the egg or the milk at all. My favorite recipe from pick up limes
Love this recipe. So moist!! I didn’t have applesauce so I substitute for smash bananas! I little banana flavor but the result was great! Thank you for the recipe
I like how she breaks ever down and explains every detail thoroughly.
I *LOVE* these food school videos!
(And I happen to have all these ingredients in my pantry right meow!)
Thank you for explaing about what the ingredients do. Its very helpful
I can't wait to try this cake.
Loved it, the narrative is always improving, and that’s what makes the whole process very very interesting ❤️🍰 keep it up team PUL 🙌🏻
I love videos like that, where you tell us more about what ingredients were used and why! It gives us a really interesting look into the recepie-making-process. Thank you and your team so much!!
So glad I found your channel years ago, your recipes are on rotation in my home every week! Thanks so much for this awesome & informative video ❤️
It's nice that you explain why exactly you use particular ingredients, like the differences between different plant milks. 👍
This is such a wholesome video! ❤
Congratulations on the 5 year anniversary! Here's to more vegan food recipes and food science videos🥳
I Use this recipe for my kid’s birthday cake because it is somewhat healthy and it tastes so good. Best homemade cake ever! ❤
this is so helpful, thank you! I love how you explain things so simply that it's easy to understand! I will definitely be trying this cake
I appreciate sooo much you taking the time to explain why you choose certain ingredients
First!!! Couldn't wait to click on the notification. ♥️♥️

I love the “difference between “ and the science behind what works!
Congrats on five years! I am definitely trying out this cake recipe 😁
Thank you, Veda, and enjoy! 🎂
Congratulations to 5 years PUL! I cannot wait to make this cake and I am really enjoying that you're letting your, what I like to call, silly, festive personality shine through!
You deserve like button without watching whole video
Explanations in the middle of the recipe have been sooo interesting, and the cake looks amazing 😍
Soo informative
nobody told us to use only soy or pea milk but this beautiful brainy lady did! I am ever so grateful for you! you are so logical and this makes so much sense!
This is a great recipe, I’m wondering if there’s a sugar substitute like stevia or monk fruit or any other kind of natural sweetener?
This was amazing thank you so much!
The instructions are clear and the recipe is easy to follow!
I made this for my moms birthday and she absolutely loved it, cooking/baking is not my strongest suit but i really wanted to make her something special, i tried my best and followed your instructions to a T and it turned out great! she is on a gluten free dairy free egg free diet so this was perfect i just used gluten free flour replacement instead of normal flour, its so moist, dense and chocolaty its amazing! Thanks again!
Update: I am making it for the 6th time now I am addicted to this cake♡ thank you for the amazing recipe
This was the most delicious chocolate cake ever, I baked it twice, once with frosting, and once without, and loved them both ( maybe the one without frosting even more)
I baked it for my birthday
5 years! Wow! 🎉 Here’s to many more! Thank you for bringing so much joy to our lives via delicious food and beautiful videos.
THANK YOU for taking the time to teach about the chemistry of ingredients. i’ve ruined so many recipes by unknowingly subbing ingredients that should not be subbed out!!
Literally the best 'THE BEST' video for vegan cake on entire you tube
I baked this cake over the weekend. My first vegan cake ever! It came out beautifully! Thank you so much. From South Africa😊
I like the fact that you are soo thorough in explaining everything. The cake looks sooo yummy !!! 😩
I have made this cake twice. My husband insisted that I bring it to Thanksgiving dinner. Needless to say, it was a hit! Thank you for this amazing, seriously amazing recipe!
