The famous mystical power “Togakushi Shrine” was built at the base of Mt. Togakushi.
Togakushi is famous for its seasonal beauty, spiritual significance, and cultural attractions. Togakushi Shrine consists of five shrines, known as the lower, middle, and upper shrine areas (Togakushi Hōkō-sha, Hino-miko-sha, Togakushi Chū-sha, Togakushi Oku-sha and Kuzuryu-sha respectively), each area about 2 km apart.
The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid in a cave in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, thereby bringing darkness to the world. In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to lure the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away to prevent her from hiding again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means "hiding door".
You will get the upper shrine after passing through the thatched-roof Zuishinmon Gate and 300 tall sacred cedar trees. You will enjoy hiking over series of stone steps. The shrine's main hall spectacularly stands in the steep mountainside of Mount Togakushi. Togakushi forest is famous for its spiritual positivity and natural beauty. While hiking you can be tired but the cold breeze will energize you. You will be amazed to see the beauty of tall 800 -900 hundred years old cedar trees.
