One change I would make to the Z440 build is go to a 1TB SSD, it fits the budget and makes better use of the adaptor.

@@hofweb that's actually true. SATA SSDs are still useful. Especially if you can manage to secure an old enterprise SATA SSD... boy I didn't know how good SATA SSDs could be until I possessed one of those.

The beauty of a Xeon workstation is that the second PCIe x16 slot also has all 16 lanes direct off the CPU, not the chipset, and supports bifurcation at x4,x4,x4,x4...
Get a 4X M.2 adaptor for about $22, and run four drives at full speed instead of just one.

Going used, you can regularly find Ryzen 1600AF (Which is a re-branded 2600) CPUs for $30 and even 3600 for about $45. Then a cool tip for budge GPUs, the AMD 5700 is an 8gb card the performs a bit better than a GTX1070. But heres the thing... The 5700 actually uses the exact same board and parts as the 5700XT, just with a different bios that caps its performance. So if you're thrifty, you should pick up one of these 5700's with a flashable BIOS for about $75-$100 USD. then flash it with a bios from the same manufacturer but for the 5700XT. Suddenly, you card will be giving you the same performance as a RTX 2070 Super, only without raytracing. I've personally tested this on the MSI OC MECH 5700, and it worked like a dream. I honestly think these two tips will give you the biggest bang for your buck if you buy used today.

Glad people are taking the Z440 advice.
But don't be afraid to dream bigger !!
Get a barebones Z440 unit with no CPU or RAM for only about $95, and add your choice, rather than just 6 cores.
There are many CPU's to choose from.
Try a Xeon E5 2697 v3 (14c/28t) for around $15, if you need many cores.
Or a Xeon E5 2640 v4 (10c/20t) at $10 if you want better IPC, and faster RAM.
Used DDR4 ECC server RAM works out to just over a dollar per GB... So take advantage of cheap Quad-Channel.
64 GB (4x 16GB) of 2400MHz Samsung branded should run only about $70.
Xeon CPU's have a whopping 44 PCIe lanes... take advantage of that second x16 slot running directly off the CPU, with bifurcation support (x4,x4,x4,x4).
Grab a 4X M.2 NVMe adaptor for $20, to run four drives rather than just one.
An RX 5700 could fit in under budget... But an RX 5700XT on flash sale for just a few bucks more would beef it up a notch.

      More super helpful tips:
The top Haswell v3 CPU would be an E5 2696 v3 (18c/36t), which can even be found as low as $45 on Ali X... It has a slightly higher turbo than the more common 2699 v3, yet somehow costs less.
There are a few Broadwell v4 CPU's with a couple more cores, but the price jumps way up.
If you are comfortable with BIOS modding, you can do an all-core "Turbo Unlock" hack on the Haswell's.
It doesn't work on Broadwell, but they have slightly better IPC anyway.
You can enable ReBar with a BIOS mod.
Note that Quad-Channel RAM is roughly comparable to double the speed of Dual-Channel... Quad 2400Mhz is almost like Dual 4800Mhz... making it almost competetive with DDR5 !
Grab a cheap Wifi-6E or a 2.5Gbit Ethernet card and slap it in that extra x1 PCIe slot above the GPU.
These machines can pull double duty beyond a budget gaming rig.... All those extra cores, rams, lanes, and drives, make it a great Render Box for creators, fileserver, virtual machine host, etc.
If you really wanna see some fun, try an HP Z840 with a base price under $300 before upgrades... It's like the same machine but with dual CPU sockets, more expansion, more everything.
Less useful for gaming; More useful for workloads.
Does your Render Box need 36-cores/72-threads ?...

I enjoy this sort of content and I have an idea you may enjoy exploring. Affordable SFF! OK, plenty of people have had this idea but it's only now becoming attainable. I recently built a pc with a bunch of my own used parts. So I don't know what kind of prices I could achieve exactly but I am certain that one could build a 10 liters or less, 1080p beast for under 1000 dollars. That's the challenge but it's no challenge at all, I bet you could do it for much less. I'm in the Philippines and I used a "Shiny Snake case" very much like a PCCooler i100, lunchbox style sandwich case with a handle and I crammed in a 1660ti and a ryzen 3300x with a stock cooler. I gave that to my wife's nephew studying engineering. He's since spent hundreds of hours on elden ring.

The thing with console is that the base price tag is not the final price, you have to pay for a subscription to play online, which makes a console that costs $300 actually cost more than triple over the course of the 7-8 years it lasts. With older pc parts remaining relevant for as long as a console stays relevant and with fsr being a thing, a gpu like a gtx 1070/1080 and a ryzen 5 4500 cpu for example could last as long as a console does for around the same price give or take

    • @lexlopez15
      @lexlopez15 Рік тому +1

Not necessarily true, you don't HAVE to pay for a subscription at all if you don't care about playing online. I've been doing just fine for yrs without paying for a subscription. There are plenty of single player games out there....not to mention there are quite a few free to play online games if you're in such a need...
also, consoles have perks and incentives and offer discounts for subscriptions...I tend to sign up for 30 days or more when they have their $1 deals. (Usually around Black Friday and Christmas).

Thank you very much for the follow-up! Couple of caveats:
    - The workstation PC's are not that much of an option for people outside of the US. Theres a lot less of them on ebay in the UK for example and when they come up people know exactly what they are so they are no longer a bargain. Also, since the Sandy Bridge (core 2000) days, HP and Acer started doing very shady things with the motherboards such as locked PCI EX slots, limited GPU support and proprietary board power connectors, to prevent second life and increase e-waste (PC enthusiasts are not even remotely their main consumer base for the workstations....what the flying f##k??).
-There are better options for a cheap ryzen CPU than the 1500x if you can find them local. I bought an R5 2600 for £30 (37 USD). 6c/12t at 3.7ghz, unlocked chip, sometimes with cooler included (thermal paste will be needed though.
Otherwise I fully agree with everything in the video, there's many different ways of getting a PC or getting into gaming on a very tight budget. The APU now and GPU later choice is actually much better than people realise, as if the buyer then saves up for another month or two they can just chuck in an RX 580 8GB or GTX 1070 for like 60 bucks and run almost everything at 1080p.

It can play csgo, apex, and Valorant with a pretty good fps while streaming or recording and it can edit 1080p footage on premiere pro pretty decently without any hiccups. Recently went the HP z440 route over the summer and its great, got one with e5-2667v3 with 32gb ram and a quadro k4200 for $125, bought a gtx 1070 on ebay for $80 and thing pretty much runs everything i want it to at 1080p. There are caveats though like needing a m.2 adapter, proprietary parts, xeons want quad channel ram, and 700w psu only being 2 6 pins.

considering i have a $3200 gaming rig sporting a 4080 gpu and 7950x cpu and every other bells and whistles in the AM5 platform, Your'e absolutely right. console is now the king of base consumer/budget gaming. Medium settings across the board, sure. But you get access to ANY current game. if you want a pc the will do the same thing, $850 minimum at least for whats out now (targeting low settings of course).
Building like what i have means you have to save up allllllot. And research allllot. You need to give yourself as much an edge as possible if your building a 'will play games at med/high to ultra and will perform well for at least a good 5 (hopefully more) years' type build, You need to dig deep into your pockets and build your pc like its some state-of-the-art piece of machinery like a car or some crap...
I got my sis a ps5 for her bday and i kinda wished i did the same. Knowing what i know having done the research i did, i coulda just got a ps5/xbox and suped it up with better storage, fans, paste and pads and that would give it an actual boost in performance over other similar specc'd hardware. it would have also only cost like $100 extra on top of the console for those improvements, making it even better of an option in value vs similar stuff.

Its good to see the return of used prebuilds. I remember those were all the rage when I original watched tech tube videos back in 2016ish. I think it was Ryzen that really made a lot of those disappear over time.
Good to see the GPU market has finally dropped in price a little bit, on RX570/580 cards. However maybe that is not a good thing because at this point in time they are 7 years old and AMD is ending the driver support for polaris. It is good to see however games with these cards still run well. I guess it makes sense though. Most games are not getting more demanding, it is really more a long the lines that standards for what people want out of a gaming pc have gone up. Back in 2016, a budget gaming PC was 720P 30FPS target ish on modern games at the time where you probably using a GT1030 or RX550 to pull it off as this was just a little before the advent of the legendary Ryzen 2200G/2400G Apus. Today with the RX580 you are essentially using it for what people originally mostly used the cards for, and that is 1080P mid-high setting gaming.
I really do want an APU with RX580 performance, I feel it has been long enough to where that truly needs to be the bottom line.

I have a console, and the performance is super reliable and great for the money
And I’m forgetting how often it’s a pain in the ass for random reasons on PC
But I’m going back to PC because of having access to mods and being able to change things in the game
When I was a kid I just played games, but now it’s way too limiting and boring to just follow suit with the slow show they set up for players
For example, driving games with the crazy high amount of credits you need to buy a few cars + you can purchase them directly from your credit card saved on your PS account

or if you want to get the same performance of a workstation pc with a graphics card but want to have it in a custom case
then the aliexpress x79 and x99 motherboard combos dont cost anything over $45 and you get all the modren stuff like nvme slots and ddr4 but that is excluive to the x99 boards and the x79 boards only support ddr3 and dont forget to mention that is you want to upgrade the ram these boards only support ecc memory so you might have more gbs per ram stick but it will be very slow on the clock speeds but other than that its a solid option if you want a extrime buget builds that can go as cheap as $130
