  • I think people need to watch the video first before putting a dislikes lmao, I didn't say anything bad about both games.
    One day, I stumble upon this video saying that ZZZ combat is better than Wuthering Waves. I came in with the intention of knowing and understanding the criticism about the game, so maybe Wuthering Waves can improve their game, turns out, it's absolute waste of time.

      @@ArsevensX I wonder how is ZZZ supposed to be more creative than Wuwa tho? Isn't it exactly the same? You have optimal builds, optimal rotations to build and maintain resources on your agents and trigger buffs/debuffs, etc...every game fighting and combat action game is like that.
      One criticism that we could make about Wuwa is that every boss can be approached exactly the same way without a need to alter rotations at all. Basically right every boss feels like the exact same (Beringal and Mephis do feel a bit more unique) HP punching bag with different animations.
      They should really implement more complex boss mechanics, that do alter the way you have to play against them.

    Recent Wuwa Player here that started the game to finally see what it was like.
    As for the meaning of cooldowns...I think balance is one part of it, but fundamentally, cooldowns exist to encourage the player to perform different actions. The motive for that might be balance, but in other cases it can simply be dynamism; or in other words, it can be more engaging to force the player to do different actions rather than the same one over and over. You can probably boil his main point down to his dislike of rotations that emerge in games with cooldowns, or rather-the existence of the most optimal rotation is boring to him in content that he thinks requires the most optimal rotations of his characters in order to get the highest tiered score, instead of more free-form play.
    If you're playing Devil May Cry or another similar action game for example, since there are no cooldowns you can prioritize whatever you want. There are highly damaging skills in DMC 5 that you can do over and over, but it wouldn't be as effective-or stylish-as someone utilizing multiple different actions to string together a combo. Sure, I think this is true.
    What I DON'T get is that ZZZ also has optimal combos and rotations for characters, and isn't as expressive as a character action game like Devil May Cry. I don't think any gacha game will have as expressive combat as a game in that genre, because that's not what they're trying to do. ZZZ's gauge DOESN'T change the actions you can do with it, since every character has one ex special attack that uses the gauge, but he talks about many different ways that he can use it? It's the same damn choice, with only some exceptions from limited pulls, but they don't dictate the rule.
    You pretty much solved his main argument when you talked about it boiling down to a different design philosophy. Zenless Zone Zero and Wuthering Waves are fairly different. Currently I enjoy ZZZ's combat more but that's because I have more limited characters that I like there and I'm still trying to get characters for Wuwa on my account. Though Wuwa's freedom of movement combined with the open world is really refreshing. Wuthering Waves oozes quality and care immediately in a way I haven't really felt in a gacha personally.
    Anyway, got an early Calcharro from a ten pull on Jingshi's banner... want to save for Shorekeeper because I like her design the most out of the characters so far, and she's a really good support-but not sure when she's going to rerun. 😥 Don't know if I should pull Jingshi or save if Shorekeeper is really going to take a while to return.

      Exactly bro, I believe that even if ZZZ offer more "freedom" they still has their "most optimal" rotation as well.
      Anyway, as for Jinhsi, she is top tier damage, with very little skill ceiling to use optimally. If you are new, and you want to obliterate contents, you should pick her. Verina is enough for Jinhsi. SK on the other hand take your team into different level haha.

      @@ArsevensX That is tempting lol. I think I'm going to play it by ear and see what they announce as the next banners close to next patch. If Shorekeeper is there, I'll wait. If not, I'll pick up Jinshi or maybe Phoebe.
      I picked up Verina for my selector, and got Encore from my 1st beginner banner. I picked my route for Lingyang for my second beginner banner, so may check out some of your Lingyang stuff I see on your channel if he shows up. 👀
      So far, DPS wise I'm chilling with Rover, Calcharo, and Chixia - but you know how it is, a limited 5 star DPS is tempting. Thanks for the video and the comment.

      I think people put too much focus on what the player can do offensively and not defensively.
      ZZZ's gauges aren't just about doing an enhanced special attack, it's also about getting i-frames. In DMC, a lot of combos tend to be done in the air because it's generally safer to be in the air than on the ground. ZZZ has several defensive options that can be available to the player to deal with an enemy's attack, not just EX-specials. And the reason why defensive options are important is because they give more options to the player in dealing with an enemy's attack, and can lead the fight into different directions. Gauges, enemy stun, and anomaly build up are all going to fill up differently depending on whether you choose to dodge or parry an attack. If special attacks had cooldowns instead of a gauge, then it wouldn't be like that and characters would be designed more around fitting into a rotation.
      In WuWa, there's primarily just one defensive option, which is dodging. People will talk about how there's a parry, but that's only on like maybe 30% of attacks in the game? Is that enough to make it worth mentioning and be considered a significant part of the combat like parrying in ZZZ? Kind of disingenuous if you ask me. And unless you're playing quickswap, which can also be played in ZZZ, the combat primarily comes down to going through a cookie-cutter rotation and dodging when an attack is coming, and skill cooldowns further support that design.
      People who say WuWa's combat is the best are likely doing one of the following: Playing quickswap and enjoy the complexity that comes with it, like the freedom of movement that ultimately doesn't do much in combat, or conflate difficulty with engagement. In no way is WuWa a bad game (minus gacha, even if the gacha is the best among the big 4), but I kind of think people glaze its combat a bit too much. I do feel like I'm just going through a team rotation when I'm playing WuWa, but not in ZZZ.

      ​@@SavageRodent Sure, I think that defensive options also add to a lot of depth in character action games, however there are some things I would contest here.
      Ex-Specials having I-frames can lead to more of what HC Casual critiqued about Wuthering Waves - ignoring your enemy in favor of doing the optimal set of skills from your character. When the gauges are full, it doesn't matter what the enemy is really doing, because you can just pop all your EX specials and be safe. Also, speaking of being in the air, Wuthering Waves also implements aerial movement which seems to be impactful with some characters and could also be used defensively, like in character action games such as Devil May Cry.
      Parrying / Swapping out of a character is a mechanic I'm really fond in ZZZ; or rather, the fact that you can parry 90% of attacks (except the red-colored ones) as opposed to the small percentage in WuWa. That's a good detail to bring up.
      I still feel like there's a general order of operations to when I play Zenless Zone Zero; whether that's:
      Go into my stunner -> build up stun -> switch to my attacker.
      or
      Build frostfire stacks with Miyabi, unleash charged attack special --> switch to anomaly character to reset the anomaly --> Go back into Miyabi/Support, etc. etc.
      Or some other flow, it still feels to me like a team rotation, it's just more flexible. In the end, I think there still exists the most optimal team rotations for any Zenless Zone Zero team, but the difficulty of the endgame isn't as high as to demand that to reach the highest tier of clearing which is probably where it ends up feeling better to HC Casual. However, I'm not certain that in WuWa the most optimal team rotation is needed either, I mean... @ArsevenX showed an example of clearing endgame content without even dodging or parrying, which resulted in taking LONGER to finish; so it's likely that HC Casual's experience with endgame content was marred by him not having properly setup his characters for that, given they were still level 70 in comparison to fighting level 90 or level 100 enemies.
      In the end, I think both Wuthering Waves and Zenless Zone Zero simply have different approaches to combat despite how similar they might seem on the surface. I think it's okay for HC Casual or anyone to like Zenless' combat more, but it's the way he structured his critique as objective that incited the backlash:
      "Part of me feels like Zenless Zone Zero may be a whole tier above Wuthering Waves, instead of just a different flavor of fun." - A quote from the video.
      I mainly brought up the freedom of movement and open world as to iterate that, when I started playing a couple days ago, those things were more captivating to me than just the combat by itself. You get a package with Wuthering Waves that is comparable to playing an action-focused game like Zenless Zone Zero, but in an open world like Genshin Impact, with polished traversal options to encourage fun exploration and interaction with the world. Fundamentally, that layer of Wuthering Waves alone is going to appeal to a whole different demographic of people that are fond of exploration -- whereas, if ZZZ's combat doesn't click with you or you feel indifferent about it, it's the only gameplay offering for the player.

    I dont get him. He says its too broad so its bad but then he says its too restrictive. I mean, rotations are restrictive and you end up doing the same thing over and over to beat enemies but its not even exclusive to wuwa unless I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure you also use rotation in ZZZ if you're up against timer unless you just unga bunga and somehow beat enemies on time. If so then its just a button mash simulator. Also, rotations can change depending on the situation since you need to dodge and people come up with different rotations on a single team comp from easy to giga sweaty rotations

      Exactly, in my opinion, the only strict rotation is during main DPS on time, when it comes to WuWa. Because, DPS would suffer some DPS loss due to losing outro skill buffs from sub DPS if they switched out. But the healer and sub DPS time frame give you absolute freedom to switch around and do what needs to be done if you want to.

    I agree with him on the point that ZZZ's combat is better than WuWa, but he really didn't do a good job of explaining his perspective. Lots of unnecessary rambling and repeating points, and I get that. But you missed the point of what he was saying a couple of times and nitpicked parts of what he was saying when they had nothing to do with his argument.
    Edit: You didn't link the original video. At least give credits and allow us to go from your video to theirs to watch it for ourselves.
