- Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Dong Zou from AcroGarden.
Dong has a PhD in chemistry and worked for several pharmaceutical companies in various therapeutic areas including anti-inflammatory, cancer, pain management and anti-infectious diseases. He developed his first interest in marine invertebrates when he was working as a post doc at the University of Virginia.
He has been in aquarium hobby since he was in college and he got into the saltwater hobby in 2004 after setting up his first marine fish tank for a Nemo and after he discovered the Boston Reefers Society.
About 10 years ago, he cofounded his first company on drug discovery. Soon after that, he was able to combine his passion for coral and his experience in the pharmaceutical industry and cofounded a new company, eCove BioMarine. This company focused on aquaculture coral for drug discovery and bone grafting. His current company, AcroGarden Inc, was then founded to hold the intellectual properties and to study coral farming.
AcroGarden is now his primary focus. The company produces aqua-cultured coral, mainly SPS, for the hobby.

Best guest ever. Could have him on weekly and your viewership would just rise and rise. Thanks as always Keith!
Hands down the best guest of all time!
I love Mr. Zou and I love his energy
My favourite guest 😊
I learn several new things every time he is on! Thank you
Another great one. Thanks Keith, thanks Dong. You guys are the best
Well done guys, no other guest I look forward to listening to more than Dong!!
Dong reminds me of my college chemistry professor: older chinese man, also brilliant in his field and owned many patents. He taught because he wanted to, not because he needed money. He was so friendly and eager to share what he knew. Everybody who took his classes colloquially called him Grandpa Chen, because we all wanted him to be our wise grandpa. Dong is so damn smart and charming. What a great laugh, too. I want him to be my grandpa.
Great show! I always enjoy listening to Dong. Cheers!
The legend is back, missed that laugh, love this guy
Seriously!
I lived on the GBR for almost 10 years, and fished a lot. We had seasonal variations in temperature between 18C and 31C in the inshore areas (which also had extensive reef systems). And for several months, during the wet season (when water temps were their highest), the salinity would definitely be lower than 35ppm, and the water was essentially opaque. The reef environment is a much wilder place than people give it credit for.
I was just made aware of an interesting finding by Sarah Gierz, who did her PhD studying the heat tolerance of Symbiodinium (aka zooxanthellae) - they are actually less likely to be stressed by high temperatures if light is greatly reduced, and oxygen is kept high (basically the environmental parameters that are most prevalent during wet season - high winds and silt-laden water). So the answers are there, it's just whether we as reef keepers are willing to try and apply some of those lessons.
Thanks for all you great work Keith. And thanks to Dong for being Dong. Such a great guy. If anyone has links to amazon calcium carbonate they use or vit C powder please share them with me. I dont want to buy the wrong stuff 🙈
I love this guy!!! Merry Christmas!!! HahahHa
Awesome one guys! I missed his coral snow recipe what is it? And how much to dose and how often
I remember people dosing vitamin c much longer than 10 years ago, maybe 15 or more years ago back in Reef Central heyday….think Zoa guys started it. Supposedly helped with Zoa’s and Paly’s melting if I remember right.
Huge Dong fan I see
I’ve heard Carl, Snow also referred to as a food source is a case of using the same term for two different things?
10 minutes in I’m ready to start vitamin C dosing
Hi which esv 2 part for the coral snow?
alk
Thanks 😊 good information btw i want to try
Whats the dosage of coral snow per gallon?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Snow most deff works for vermitids.
You can see em slime when u dose it…
I had em sparingly, i hardly run into one.
I snow once a week when i remember to.
This gentleman doesnt mention bacteria and coral food dose w the snow either….
It will work by itself tho
