Caesar in Spain: part three - A victory without a battle

- The third part of the Caesar in Spain series, describing the maneuvering campaign of Julius Caesar's around the city of Ilerda and Iberus river against the loyal legions of Pompey, july - august 49 BC.
Music made with Filmstro
Narrator: Christian H. Miles ( / christianhmiles )
This is probably my favorite of all of Caesar's campaigns and one of my favorites campaigns ever. Caesar defeating a large enemy army without ever fighting any major battle is absolutely impressive, and shows how good Caesar actuall was.
Guy literally drew up a chessboard on the map and checkmated an entire army
@@RexGalilae
Is it my greatest triumph Julius Caesar
To be fair, most pre-modern wars were fought without battles.
Me : Having a bad day and tired of life...
Me: Sees Syntagma uploaded Part III of Caesar in Spain.
Also me: *Excited screeching noises*
same
Can relate
Criminally undersubscribed
And criminally underwatched
For this video
They're high quality uploads, but he doesn't exactly upload regularly. I don't blame people for not subbing.

For me this is the ideal case to subscribe.
I want to see quality again, and in the case of somebody who uploads irregularly my best choice is to sub to the channel.
And because this channel doesn't flood me with daily or weekly uploads this is one of only 3 channels where I've activated the bell.
yes but they made no more videos?
Production quality is so high, that watching all the ads without skipping feels like a bargain.
Best narrator ever,.Reminds me of the guy who did Space Hulk video games,.A roman-esque futuristic game,
“When in doubt - build a wall”
Gaius Julius Caesar
"And make Mexico pay for it"
Donald J Trump
🤦♂️
Also Walter Ulbricht, propably
And if that plan doesn't work, DITCH it.

Legend's say They are still camping.
Kudos to Afranius for pushing Caesar’s ingenuity to it’s limits and not giving up so easily. Otherwise we wouldn’t have had these video series.
Well done Syntagma 👍
Caesars campaign against Aphraneus in Spain is one of the most fascinating and captivating reads in military history. Such a form of war of manuver in these acient times and the extent of it is just mindblowing.
i sometimes wonder if generals of today could even compare to these guys. When you can just call in a perfectly aimed GPS guided artillery strike or aerial bombing anytime anything gets hard, you don't have to beat the opposition mentally.
I’ve listened to this story told dozens of times in Ceasars war commentaries audiobook. Feels great finally having a visual representation of the story.
i watch K&G, bazbattles, historymarche, invicta, etc and you are just as good as any of them. Keep up the awesome work. these videos are great
He's among the top and most detailed
Check our History Civilis as well. Great series on Caesar!
Truth!
I watch them as well. He is much better and more detailed.
The wait was long, and the result worth it. Awesome stuff
Not even close to how long Caesar waited for that sweet victory 😤
100% Agree
I was wondering when you were going to upload again! Epic
This channel is a Jupiter’s gift to us common viewers ☀️
These videos are rare but so good 👍
Quality over quantity is what youtube been lacking recently.
Long time no see!
Psychological warfare is the best kind of warfare.
All hail Ceasar. Can you imagine the dross we have as leaders now going on campaign? Ceasar cared about his troops and that is why they were so loyal.
He also was intelligent enough to make concessions.
What a tactical genius Ceasar was! A lost art!
The constant positional battles and maneuvering really highlights the similarity of campaign to chess. The Spanish campaign is so interesting
It looks like YT is supressing historical videos now... You guys are a global treasure.
you and history marche are a gift from god
@Gene Litvinov why?
@@OCinneide Bazbattles is generally better than HM.
I've seen this story on UA-cam before, but never with such detail and such clarity as in your three part series. I never even realized before that this entire campaign was fought with basically no major battles at all. Crazy, though, that the Caesarians could take a defeat at the gates of Ilerda and make it seem like a victory because of how fiercely they fought.
Excellent Work. Well Done!
Caesar was vicious in campaign. Once the prey was fixed, he no longer let it escape.
From Sun-Tzu to Napoleon, it was said the mark of a great commander was the victory without combat. Napoleon once remarked that he had 'defeated them with marches'.
What an excellent ending to the Spanish campaign! Great video! Can't wait for the Greek campaign...
thank you. Will be a Greek campaign but not in the next video. Have to take a break from Caesar for a video or two :)
@@Syntagma Totally understandable! If it's not a secret, what story is going to be up next?
@@speggeri90 I guess it's a secret
@@AlphaHowlVideos Must be but it's all good.
5:01 ~ 5:15 creative and stunning transition animation!
:)
Neutralized 7 enemy legions with just clever maneuvering...the man was a genius
100 times better than any channel on youtube! The graphics is so beautiful and delicate. Perfect narator and music. If this is not a masterpiece, then nothing should be called a masterpiece!
Oh men this video was so good, keep it going, ur doing great work, a lot of details that others channels misses.
Incredible videos, thanks for your work. They remind me of history channel when they actually showed history some 15 years ago
Excellent, having listened to a many a podcast on Cesar and the History of Rome. Really appreciate the video & look forward to hopefully many a future videos
By far, the best combination of storytelling and animation depicting a battle in Caesar's Civil War. You have outshined even Kings & Generals and HistoryMarche. ⚔️
YES BUT WHERE ARE THE OTHER VIDEOS? HOWEVER WITHOUT THOSE TWO CHANNELS I WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN SO MANY NUANCES IN THIS.
WOW this video is amazing, so fascinating.
Caesar had one of the most creative mindsets. But also clever, insightful and thoughtful. Always forward-looking. Very bright and sharp.
I love how these videos show the tactical brilliance of Caesar! More please!
well I was waiting for this video since 9 months ago. i literally forgot about it, then I saw the title and went "WAIT. THERES NO WAY"
the day is now going 1000% better
great job, keep on doing, I'm a fan of Caesar's tactical licks, please do more of that;)
thank you
This was honestly a brilliant campaign by both sides. Given their veterancy, the Optimates Hispanic army was probably the best they had. Despite the decisiveness of its ending both sides performed well during the campaign, and it wasn't until the end that things started to turn inexorably in the Populares' favour.
God the wait was so long. But still very worth it. Best ancient battle analysis channel on youtube
This series was incredibly well done! It was packed full of information and research, animation was awesome, and it was super suspenseful. You told the story in a way that just drew me in and kept me waiting for the next moment. Caesar was so brilliant. The music really added to the suspense, too. You always do a fantastic job, but you really went to the next level with these three videos. Thank you and, again, exceedingly well done! Please keep the outstanding videos coming and God bless you, my friend!
Your channel has the level of perfect teaching material in schools.

Thanks for uploading....long waiting...
Very Well Done. Bravo.
هرمنا من أجل هذه اللحظة التاريخية
Yes! Thank you!!
04:30 when you use sand and a pillum like an Ipad 🤣👌🏾
Wonderful video! I am particularly surprised by the preeminent role of Caesar's auxiliary cavalry to harrass and slow down the Pompeian army. I also wonder if that would have been possible if Romans were more familiar with archery: in that case the harrassment of the cavarly would have been much harder to carry out.
You should deserve a millon subscribers. Your content is awesome. I love it!!
Greeting from Argentina! Keep going !!
