The Mercedes-Benz 500E was the original Porsche sedan. Today I'm reviewing a 500E to explain what I mean, and to show you around a classic Mercedes in excellent condition. I'm also driving the 500E to show you what it's like on the road.

A real bisexual petrol-head As a car guy I highly agree, I just wish for the death of all the Priuses not there owners. Too bad they are fucking Toyotas dang it.
14:40 You totally missed the significance of the monowiper on the windshield. It was an MBZ innovation that swept 80% of the windscreen and stayed inline with the airflow, thus preventing it from lifting up off the windshield at speed. Marvelous engineering that deserves more respect in your review.

Well, yeah... I mean... There are two headlight wipers because the car has two headlights! I really couldn't understand his point there...
@tommasomanzali7847 It's just a little silly don't think into it too much.

Probably didn’t have to pay extra for a real leather interior too.
A real bisexual petrol-head I’ve never once complained about that. If people are going to eat steaks then the hide should not go to waste. But my comment was more about value for the money- prices go up every year and quality goes down. If mbtex/leatherette/whatever is cheaper to produce than leather then why would that not be reflected in the cost of the car?

Yup, just saw this horror. Cannot unsee it. Wow.
Who gold wraps a Prius?
My ex-girlfriend had a 400E. It had a 268 horsepower 4.2 liter V8, and it would go like hell for a car of it's size and weight. Rare car, but not as rare as the 500e. It was one step down from the 500e, and still cost $55,000 new. Just an awesome car to drive. Back then, 'luxury' meant build quality and performance. Now, 'luxury' means, "It has the biggest touch screen in it's class!"
Wasn't the 500E the only V8 powered variant of the W124?
@@yash.kapoor Nope. The 400E became the E420 a couple years later when the W124 got a 'refresh'.
For my standards, 0-60 in 5.9 seconds would be a 10/10 lol
For me anything below 7 seconds is super fast.
@@bambloozr9951 for doug, anything under 3 seconds gets a 10 i think
Lol I think my Jeep GC 5.7 almost does that lmao
I think my 2010 can do a 5.5 ish seconds to 60 although I have never tried
I think there is also a regional reason that E550 was still called an E500 in europe
I just want to know who would wrap a Prius gold.

From the late 80's to the early to mid 90's is when Mercedes cars were built like a brick shithouse. They just did not break. I owned two.
Absolute tanks! Seemed to be sucked to the road. And....they were serviceable!
Great cars! I began my mechanic career on the 123 chassis diesel. Can't tell you how many had over 300,000 miles.
My grandpa had his W124 diesel for ages which is why I remember every inside detail shown in the video. He sold it when it had 400,000 km on the clock. Crazy reliable car.
W211 e500s and e550s had bulletproof engines and transmissions too... long as you took care of them

What if Porsche intentionally made it too wide so Merceds would hire them to build it.
Exactly what I thought
"We found a solution but we have to build it ourself, it's too wide
- Ho ok. Wait ! What if we remov...
- WE HAVE TO BUILD IT OURSELF !"
Porsche wants to know your location!
That makes no sense because Porsche was specifically hired to make an engine fit in the W124, then Mercedes wanted the same progress Porsche made to the SL class, but again to the E class.
A happily semi-engineered coincidence I assume. Smart move if they did. Also Mercedes helping out, bet they went "meh" back then and a bit more "scheisse" today.
James Thompson Porsche didn’t “make the engine”, they were hired to install it. It was the M119 plant from the SL. I believe there was also tricky rear-end work to be done via Porsche since the normal rear/end from the E series wasn’t bulky enough. I always assumed the front flares were to accommodate the fatter front tires for better handling. They did offer a 4.2 V8 sans the flared fenders, so I’m surprised the 5.0 took up so much more room that they had to widen the fenders.
Timeless designs!! One of the most beautiful cars ever
Agreed
Contemporary SL's are even better looking, but for sedans: top indeed.
It's not a Porsche sedan. Wasn't conceptualized, designed, engineered, built, inspected, or sold by Porsche. Their involvement in this was way more modest than people think. This is a Mercedes to the bone.

The 500E is still one of the greatest cars I have ever experienced. My father had one, his partner in the office had one (still has it) and an NBA player in town had one too, all three were the two tone gray. My uncle also had a 400E which was cool too. I still remember one day we took out a Corvette in the 500E, good times.
@Kevin Pocasangre It was an amazing car, seen less of those than I have 500Es. My uncle still kind of regrets getting rid of it. I had a neighbor years ago that had a Mercedes 300CE, those were rare as hell too.

this is iconic model in Russia, since every serious criminal used to drive that car in 90th
I had a 300E 4Matic from the same era and Doug barely even touched on the best thing about these cars. The quality is amazing and no other car feels as solid on the road.
I agree, while I don't have a 4matic 300E, I can easily say it's one of the most reliable cars ever made. The only issue I can think of on those are the not so great head gasket.
Barely, he did. But it was a tank. If I remember right, I paid just over $60,000 in 1993 for a brand new 500E. That was a princely sum back then (the new Ferrari 348 I bought the same year was $80,000). But the 500E is the one I let get away. I wish I had it today. Though the AMG S63 Cab that is hiding in my garage is a worthy grandchild with just under twice the amount of torque and 585 hp...and gurgling, crackling exhaust when downshifting in sport mode that puts such a smile on my face.

The one wiper was a great idea. I had this on my older mercedes. If you notice the wiper pivots up and down slightly when it goes back and forth. The idea of that from what the dealer told me was this action of the pivoting was to keep the blade clean of debris while operating. I have to admit it did get rid of a few pine needles in my past ownership.

Chantz temming my moms 190E has the monoblade and I loved it. Worked incredibly well.
Only thing their all getting old and if your front bushes and shocks are worn out the whole car rocks side to side with the wiper, the arm is heavy enough for the motion to rock the car, I know my shocks need replacing on my 94 W124 E320 Coupe.
Mercedes gave it up because it's expensive to build, they want to reduce cost.
You should avoid driving this car in the rain...
Abraham Yedwab if you mean, for the wiper, you will be shocked how much better it is than regular twin blades, but if you mean how the engine stalls under heavy rain when you just go into a deep puddle; you just need to seal the e-coil with a couple of plastic bags and you’ll be fine :)

The most important factor of the 500e is that they new it was going to be an instant classic. They only imported 1500 cars into the US. Values increased because there are less prime examples in operation.

"nobody was putting v8 engines in mid sized sedans" American cars from the 50's to 90's "Am I joke to you"
Hold on now. You gotta remember at the time American cars all went FWD, so around the time of the 500E there really weren't any mid-sized sedans with a v8 under the hood. The best you could get would have been a 3.8L V6 from GM or Ford (in the Taurus/Sable/Continental). The last one would have been the Fox platform Lincoln Continental of the early 80's. Not one GM mid-sized car had a V8 until the Olds Aurora appeared in '94 and Chrysler wouldn't see a V8 in their lineup until the 2000's.

If you look at the length of, say, a 1992 Taurus and compare it to a 1992 500E you'll see that the Taurus is physically longer (187" vs 192") and slightly wider (70" vs 71") but the Benz has a longer wheelbase (110" vs 106"). They're in the same class of car.
15:14 The Mono-Wiper for the windshield had the advantage to clean more of the area than two wipers are able to. It's cleaning about 95% of the windshield while two wipers do about 85-90%. They only stopped buliding it for cost reasons, the engineering and manufacturing is much more expensive. One wiper for the 124 cost about 650€ (720$).

There is one more way to tell a 500E apart besides the slightly wider fenders: the regular W124 has the fog lights built into the front lights while the 500E has the separate below the bumper
The designation "E-Class" wasn't given to any car in the Mercedes lineup until 1993, for the 1994 model. So technically this is not an E-Class, but instead a W124. The last two years the W124 was built, it had the name "E-Class".

My w124 has no airbags. The passenger airbag over here was optional, so they used the glove box to put the airbag, and rigged tue central console cover to make up for it. The console ends up having more room than the original dash glovebox, though. Oh, and there should be pockets down the front doors too.
The car is an executive performance sedan. You would see someone driven in this thing. The lack of storage up front, the ashtrays, the rear shade, the larger rear handles (for hanging coats, dry cleaning, more room to hold on, etc.), the volume adjustment for the rear, and the phone in the car all can be attributed to it being an executive performance sedan. Those are just a few examples. It's a special car.

My w124 platform 1995 E320 Wagon has the exact same front interior. The 500E wasnt like that because it was made to drive people around it was like that because all the damn E series are like that!! Was my wagon designed with driving people around inside? No. The 500E was marketed to working class males and families. Typically people not being chauffeured around. Wouldnt the phone be in the back seat if the car was in fact designed to drive executives around?? Wouldnt it have some type of rear seat adjustment or more leg room? The S Series were designed with chauferring people around. Not an E Series. Trust me, I know the w124 platform.
@@bwame I stand corrected
the interior of the 500e has different seats, the premium wood finish, and the rear seats have no middle section. QUITE different than a normal w124 thank you.
"The Mercedes-Benz 500E Is the Original Porsche Sedan" ... "and is one of the greatest vehicles ever made"
I’m learning about all Mercedes finally bought me here lovely whip!
Interesting thing about the single windscreen wiper was that it was engineered to throw the arm out towards the edges of the screen to get maximum area wipe - so clever and mesmerising to watch!

Gold wrap doesn’t count as rice lmao nothing about a gold wrap says race inspired cosmetic enhancements
Bryan Smith it is stupid🤦
@@skylagg5537 no one wraps their car as a "racing cosmetic" idiot, rice parts are bodykits, spoilers/wings and fartcans that are made for show and do nothing to improve the performance

Ryad Hasan Ahmed dude the GOLDCROME WRAP IS LITERALLY R I C E
W124 the last mercedes that feels really solid and well built. I miss that feeling when driving newer e-classes
I think the W202 still has the same feel of solidity.
Does this apply to the W210 too? I always thought those seemed solid and their build quality was amazing, especially by today's standards
@@michu6777 the w210 started to have some electrical issues, specially the loaded ones.
Meanwhile the W210 rusted away like nothing else.
@@JohnDoe-fq5gh 212 is not bad i like the looks of it pre facelift but the interior feels to cheap and plastic.
It was this video that gave me Doug overload - I just can't take it anymore!!!!
Yeah every "quirk" he listed here is common in every single W124 and W201 out there, doesnt even matter if its the E class or not...
