  • What is the fastest WTB gravel tyre that I have to use for GBDuro endurance cycle race?
    Testing 3 popular tyres both on and off-road to see what is fastest.
    WTB Venture vs WTB Nano vs WTB Byway - all 700x40c
    Each tyre tested on road and off road, 5 reps on each tyre.
    Same bike, same wheels, same tyre pressure and controlling as many variables as possible.
    What is GBDuro?
    GBDURO is a 2000km self-supported bikepacking endurance event from Land's End to John O'Groats on road, gravel, singletrack, and everything in between.
    The race consists of 4 timed stages (~500km each); lowest aggregate time over the 4 stages 'wins'... nothing. This format seeks to find the perfect balance point between hard riding and community.

    Great test. Maybe you could also summarize results on screen in text. Thanks for this.

    Thank you so much for doing this test! I bought some ventures and was second guessing myself because I ride ~75% road ~25% gravel and singletrack (smooth), and was thnking the ventures would be too slow for the majority of my riding. I'll keep the ventures. There doesn't seem to be much difference amongst the three. Thanks again!

      They do "feel" different, but I think that was what made this so interesting is in reality the difference was very little. In terms of grip off-road on drier tracks, the Venture wins hands down.

      I reckon with that tread venture wpuld be pretty awesome in snow

      @@syedzgaming I rode the Ventures all winter long in Canada and can confirm they're awesome in the snow. I find them really slow on the road so I'm keen to try out some Byways.

      @@Scottcharliemurphey good to know, yup their tread is like michelin x ice x i 3 car snow tires lol. I just got them from amazon, will have to wait for next season.

    I prefer Ventures. Great all round tire for someone who rides varied terrain. Good price too just picked up a pair for $40.00 a piece.

    Great comparison and a lot of hard work in that! Thanks! I'll be making second wheelset with Nanos but 27,5 for sandy and muddy forest roads

    Glad I watched this. I've been riding Byways but I don't think they're quite right for all the gravel I'm riding now so I switched to Ventures. I wanted something that wouldn't drag too much on pavement.

    I have been using 650bX47 Byways for more than 2 years now for the summer periods. My absolute favorite tire. However on my secondary wheelset (that I am using between fall to spring) I am still looking for the tire which will be the best. I have tried on the 700c wheels WTB's Resolute, Nano, Panaracer's GK SK, Schwalbe G-One all-round, Mitas X-road.... So far the Nano was the best for me the wet season.

    Wtb venture is the slowest on-road but also fastest off-road gravel tire that I have ever used.

    Great video, I’m looking at this same tires. So which one you think is the fastest of all three ? For hard packed gravel ?

    • @MattPage
      @MattPage  4 роки тому +4

      I'd say the Nano is the best all-rounder. Venture grip is incredible on dry trails and maybe Byway very slightly faster but less rounded than the Nano.

    Ive been eyeing up those JRA Mahi Mahi wheels that and/or a set of stayers, Are they what you personally own or are they in for review. Would love to know your summery of thoughts on them? Look pretty natty
    Im not really a fan of WTB find them all pretty draggy IMO, much prefer Rene Herse. Interesting resaults thought

    Thanks for doing this. When you report your results would you give a percentage difference of the furthest over the shortest? Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @MattPage
      @MattPage  4 роки тому

      It wouldn't really suit a % calculation. Firstly as it would mean taking a measuring wheel, but mostly as it is completely dependant on the area you choose.

  • @TomasHellberg
    @TomasHellberg 4 роки тому +2

    Were all results presented in order shortest distance to farthest? I've watch the results a couple of times now, and still can't really tell. :) Probably super obvious to you as you know which way you rode.

    • @MattPage
      @MattPage  4 роки тому +3

      So if it helps, the first ones called out are the ones travelling the shortest. So road, that is the Ventures (just).

    For off road 40psi is a bit high for a 40mm tyre. There is a roll down test for 35mm tyres across a range of pressures from 15psi to 70psi and 30psi was the fastest. At your weight there is no reason to run more than that when off road for a 40mm tyre.

    • @MattPage
      @MattPage  4 роки тому +3

      It was chosen as it's a good pressure for a mix of road & off-road. Tyre pressure is often just personal preference.

    Makes sense: knobby tyres aren't faster on any surface. Their sole advantage off-road is that grip. Besides, the Byways have good enough a grip for all but he most tricky surfaces.

    • @MattPage
      @MattPage  4 роки тому +4

      I think the video shows exactly the opposite. A knobbly tyre can be as fast.
