  • West Coast IPA has evolved. From building a pale grist with enough malt complexity to support the hops, to selecting hop varieties that combine the new with the classic, Pinthouse’s Joe Mohrfeld wallks us through the choices.

It seems like the “modern west coast style IPA” is just a NEIPA disguised as a west coast IPA🤔

What I consider a west coast IPA is the first style you said high bitterness / clearer. What your calling a “modern” west coast IPA is just a NEIPA. This isn’t to say your beers are bad (they look delicious) but it shows your bitter that New England captured the style and you’re trying to have the west coast capture the claim. If you don’t like the NEIPA tag call it a Hazy IPA they are pretty interchangeable but end this “modern” west coast ipa nonsense

I have to disagree. Modern (westcoast) IPA is of course reflecting on hazy trend, but it's all about getting the new trends and revisiting the style. You can have bitter and crushable IPA, with juicy, fruity notes from late additions, and replacing stupid crystal malt by a bit of flakes to build up a mouth feel, and showcasing the hops better. Love this trend!

@@Jonash666 That makes it something other than a West Coast, sorry. Hazy is a trend, West Coast IPA is a defined style. You described a NEIPA.

I wish he would have elaborated on hop addition times in terms of his definition of classic vs modern. How much dang for the buck? Lol

15-20 years qualifies as "historically" lol..i guess. But i will agree, West Coast IPA is a well-established style- which is why when you make considerable alterations it is no longer is a West Coast. Get your own style, dammit. I'm going to make a "new modern" NEIPA and it's going to be crystal clear and bitter af.
