I cried through this whole episode. In 2003, my 16 yr old brother passed away from cancer and the next day my dad went to the courthouse and told them, "My son is deceased now so, take me off child support." The same week, my mom and I had to go directly to the courthouse to show a copy of my brother's death certificate. My dad didn't help pay for my brother's tombstone or anything! In 2016, my dad passed away from cancer himself. You have to be careful how you treat God's people because I promise it will come back on you.

this is my mother and my brothers grandmother. my brother wasnt living a certain lifestyle. he didnt sell drugs, never went to prison. he took care of his two sons. he decided to go to the strip club with my cousin and a friend to celebrate fathers day and he took a bullet for something that had nothing to do with him. She didn’t have to pay anything. Why didn’t his mother have insurance? In that recording she explained why she didn’t like her. The judge was blinded by her tears. I would have dismissed both claims. Because if I got a 20,000 life insurance policy and I loved my grandson the way she said she did, then why not pay for the entire funeral. She still would have had about 10 grand left.

Imagine the poor mother having to make that phone call, to ask this woman if she had a life insurance policy on her son. It must have been very hard and humiliating, but she wanted a decent funeral for her son. The mother was also so restrained in court- she behaved 100% appropriately. I have seen this scenario before, a mother neglected her child and now she is making claims on the grandchild to compensate for what she didn’t do for her child. Notice she wanted to be noticed at her grandson funeral as if it was her son. The fact that she put insurance on her grandson and didn’t pay for the funeral told the ugly sum of who she is.

There should be a clause in all life insurance policies that requires people to plan the "final arrangements" for their funerals or memorials, and an understanding that a set amount of the policy must be spent on that. It's crazy, but TONS of Americans get rich off of life insurance policies.

Umm, this is what I don't like about Judge Mathis. He doesn't follow the law. Regardless of how heartless the grandmother was, she made an agreement to pay half and she paid more than half because the price went up. Next, that audio recording was in no way, shape or form harassment. She was talking to a neutral party who recorded her and took the recording to the mother. The mother should have sued that neutral party for emotional distress. Then off of emotion, Judge Mathis who just agreed to reimburse the grandmother for her agreed upon amount, then cancels it out. I don't want an emotional judge, I want one who follows the law.
What do you know about the law? If the price went up then her half went up. Judges have this thing called discretion. If you don't like verdict you appeal.

However.....this grandma in particular has shown herself to be very cold. So much so that you see absolutely no emotion as she talk about her grandson who was gunned down in the streets. I'm sure she was heartbroken, but her hate for the mom outweighs that right now and it is evident by both her words and actions.

Some might have missed it but she said the altercation wasn't his. He was just at the strip club... anyone in their right mind, who took out a policy for someone, would and should without hesitation paid the funeral in whole. That's what the policy is typically for. And what's left is usually used to pay expenses until ur able to go to work again. That's how it's supposed to be. And if she loved him so much taking care of his funeral should've been top priority. But that's just my opinion.

We don't know how much of that 20k was her investment nor the sacrifice made trying to keep it up. She had to have assumed she would pass before her grandson so for her to take on that responsibility and then give what she gave was her choice and she shouldnt be judged for that. At least she was prepared, unlike the parents. She probably figured all the money that she has shelled out why shouldn't she have the right to build her finance back up. She gave what she gave and it shouldn't have even been asked how much the policy was by anyone period. Where she messed up something foul is bringing the grieving mother to court over what should have been given out of love, intense and purposes and support. This may be sort of irrelevant, but a lot of us within the black community or those who live in lower income areas often times go without or don't realize the importance of having insurance on ourselves or love ones. Its very important!! Something We all need it. You never know what may happen. It's better to be safe, than sorry. Even if its just enough to cover funeral expenses. Losing a loved one is already hard within itself, but having to worry about how you're going to come up with the money to lay them to rest when you have none , on top of grieving has to be another hurt and added stress all together.

I've never heard of any stipulations that the money received from life insurance policies HAS to be spent on the funeral. However... the grandmother's morals are not the best in this case. My personal opinion doesn't matter. The grandmother has to live with the choices she made concerning her grandson's funeral.
I think I needed to see this message. My nana has a life insurance policy on me (17y/o male at the time) and I was skeptical bc it felt like she was preparing for something to happen or she knew something I didn’t 🤔 Thinking she would pull a situation like this essentially profiting off my tragedy and hoarding most off the $ like this evil lady did, though I want to believe my nana isn’t this evil and calculating. But at the end-of-the-day, you’re right “you never know what may happen”. We don't even do funerals a quick memorial service. We cremate and keep the money. My grandmother died my mother and uncle were able to pay off their homes. When my mother goes I'll pay off my home. I'll have 2 homes to pass to my son. When I die he will have 3. We trying to build some generational wealth. My mother was born in the projects. We trying to be better. Lump sums of 50k or 100k help.
Your statement is very relevant and true in so many ways , 20,000 has to pay for the hospital bill, ambulance service, doctors bills, after that nothing is left over. So before bashing grandmother think about all of the various aspects of this case, also, if the boy's father was incarcerated at the time of the funeral and was allowed to attend the funeral the grandmother had to pay for transportation to and from the funeral for both the father and the sheriffs to accompany him to the funeral. I am sharing the knowledge from experience. So in reality the grandmother didn't get to keep that money she had to spend it, what she should have done was present the receipts of everything she had to pay for after the boy died, instead of just saying she paid bills.

When you have an insurance policy on someone you must cover their final expenses and bills FIRST, otherwise it’s considered insurance fraud which is a FELONY. She just told on herself.

I disagree. Usually, an insurance policy is given to assist a loved one with some financial support due to the loss of income for whatever reason. There are policies specifically set up for burials if one wants to invest in one. But in this case, unless I missed something, the deceased's behavior prompted the grandmother to take out insurance on him, but not specifically to cover funeral costs. You have to wonder why he was living with the grandmother instead of the mother. At least I wonder about that.

Grandparents usually get life insurance on children as a child because its cheap, it then either gets used as College money or sadly in this case burying the child. It is not meant to make money off of.

There is so much to dissect here…. Normally when grand parents have insurance policies on children or grandchildren is because of either a lifestyle or jobless or even the parents aren’t capable…. But there are even still so many other issues….. We have to be more responsible when it comes to our lives and what can happen because we never know..
