Had a thundercat, chose a vfr, and love it. The brakes are weird at first, but after a few rides, feels the same as the thundercat. The Triumph was a bad choice for me I think.

Funny, I owned a 900ss and described it as a sewing machine at idle and a Ferrari at speed. My 5th gen VFR w/ a staintune pipe, banging down a gear or 2 from high rpm's to set up for a turn made the most ... glorious ... sound ... ever!

This guy doesn’t know whats good. Gear driven cams are the sexiest sound you can get. I personally love the whine of my 98vfr. Brakes are amazing. Engine is smooth. He’s obviously high if thats his opinion of the vfr. NEXT. Edit the girl knows whats good.

That particular bike might have had old fluid, a crapped up master cylinder, crap quality or contaminated pads, and or sticky pistons from lack of changing the seals every couple of years. The lines could also have been old and blown.
I'd take the 800fi over the others in a heartbeat; even in yellow! 😂 👍

If it was looking for a cheap £2000-2500, 1999-2004 well looked after bike, I could possible service and buy today, I'd buy a Triumph ST. They are cheap, owners are more of a mature age and keep them tidy. You are more likely to find many with history too. Just my opinion.

Thank god they didn't choose the Ducati. A Ducati does deserve a good rider, knowing about the twirks and how to handle this masterpiece.

I have owned all of these bikes. Vfr with a pipe easy winner for sound. Both the triumph and the ducati have aged badly and look ancient now. The Vfr has aged well. The ST2 motor is a peach but like all ducati's you have to ride it aggressively to get the best out of it . The triumph motor is also a winner but the bike is just so bland looking and todays prices confirm the VFR has held up best.

lol so typical, an english guy took an english bike over a far more superiour japanese engineered marvel. The VFR800 is undestructible, it's engine is bulletproof and sounds way better than any 3 cylinder ever would. It looked as if that Triumph had an aftermarker can on it, the VFR had a stock can, which does sound awful. But it didn't deserve to have that in this review, because the engine sounds out of this world with a proper exhaust on it.
also the brakes are super safe because they are linked, especially for touring, when you are more tired... what a pillock.

I've ridden a number of Triumph triples, and they are great bikes, great engines and they do sound heavenly. The Sprint ST was given rave reviews by tons of magazines around the world when it was launched, and it's basically a less complex VFR with more power. What more could you want? The styling hasn't aged well, but it's still prettier than the Ducati IMO.

Cruising the Waterways right so no Japanese bikes are sold in the UK? I do realise that Americans have this weird thing for Harleys but other than that Honda still pretty much dominates the big bike market.

The Sprint 955i is better than the VFR800fi in all regards, better fuel range, more torque, less vibrations, wider and taller handlebars, smoother suspension, comes with a 12V electrical socket for accessories and most importantly doesn't come with unnecessary technologies like the dreaded Honda candle wax fast idle starter valves and the linked brake system. The Honda VFR also suffered from a terrible Stator/Rectifier/Wiring issues that will leave you stranded on a road near you guaranteed or your money back, I've been through that headache on my '99 and '01 VFR, redid the cables, rectifier and went LiPo battery to solve it for now. Meanwhile, my Daytona and Sprint 955i needed nothing further from me to perform excellently. Did I even mention you can customs tune the Triumphs ECU with just a cable and software?! You would need to spend a lot more for a Power Commander on the VFR800 and that's just for a piggyback! 955 > 781 nuff said

@@timeless9959 Thank you very much for the thumbs up on the Sprint 955. Time Less. I'm a bit old school with bikes and have finally woken up to the possibilities of a panniered tourer. From your experience it sounds like this is a winner in the short and longterm. The guy on the review was criticised by the Honda fans, but he knows what he is about, as does his wife, and experieinced and appreciated immediately the qualities ot the ST. And he has owned a Honda or two. I think I will see if we can't find a nice one. Very grateful to you
