The best transmission for loader work is the Synchro Range bar none. The second best is the Quad Range transmission for loader work. This is an excellent video overall and very informative. Keep up the great work
Amazing fleet of tractors there. We have a 4055 too and it is my number 1 tractor if all time. It has a power shift and it is so easy to use. Thanks for the video.
I think its great that someone is show casing southern Ontario. Its fun see local spots as you travel , I live down the road just north of Stratford. Thanks
Like you we've had a variety of John deere transmissions, and yes they are all good. We however no longer have livestock, and now grain is our only product. Even though we have cold winters here in southern Missouri, what you have is probably colder. We just did hogs and beef cattle so with the exception of grinding feed, we could wait out the cold. It,s obvious your situation is totally different and those tractors have to go regardless. Your preferance makes sense for what you do. This was a good video for a cold days entertainment. Thanks again Mike and stay safe.
I like the quad range shifter better than the actual 15 shifter. My father trained me up on quad shifting coming up as a child. The quad shifting is better on a transmission versus the 15 shifter because you have to clutch when you're going from low range shift to high range shift. Thanks for sharing this video Mike and I will be looking for more video to come. Thanks again.
I really like these 18F-8R transmissions like the one in the 2940 you showed. Thos are also quite handy transmissions for loaderwork because reverse and low range is also easy to shift. I also really like the powerquad transmissions.
@@mikep7810 yeah it is I drive a 1640 with this transmission and I really like the hi Lo in every gear. I'm planning to buy myself a 2030 1973 which also has this transmission. Although you've got three gearlevers instead of two it's about the same as the one in the 1640 and 2940. Here in Europe it's known as te ls (lasshaltung getriebe) transmission or power synchron.
@@mikep7810before I forget to mention it as standard the European ones came as 8F-4R without the power synchron. Optionally they came with the power synchron which made it a 16F-8R or with a creeper gear which also made it a 16F-8R or just with both because why not😂😂 I've seen a 2040s with creeper gear and the power synchron so it had a 32F-16R. This is as far as I know the case for European John Deere (the ones made in Manheim).
Thanks for taking the time to go over those two types of transmission that John Deere had to offer. I see that you & I operate tractors about the same way in the sense that we both downshift when coming to the end of a pass working in the field. I have to admit, not having to use the clutch with either one of those transmissions is a plus when working away in the field. As for doing loader work, I prefer the Shuttle Shift or John Deere's Power Reverser type of transmission or even better, a Hydrostat Transmission. I've got a John Deere 4600 compact tractor & it's got the Power Reverser transmission with 12 speeds forward & reverse, three ranges & four gears. Take care.
Thanks Ron. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. We have a hydrostatic transmission for that little Kubota my parents have that we used on our auger to unload beans this year
Great explanation of the transmissions. I learned a lot. I think you summed it up with your comment “it’s all just personal preference”. Stay well Mike!!
We have a 4230 and a 4430 with quad range trannys a 4640 8 speed powershift and a 4250 15 speed powershift. You explained the quads perfect but you can ask your local dealer but the powershift doesn't need the clutch unless you're doing close quarter work. The clutch use is actually hard on the 8 speed as it's actually a dump valve and starves the clutch packs of cooling oil. The 15 speed is fully modulated and can shift to nearly any gear and it will shift smoothly to it but I usually go 3 or 4 at a time till I get to the gear I want. The 8 speed is NOT modulated and needs to be shifted one maybe 2 gears at a time at most or going up you'll hit the back window and going down you'll take the steering wheel to the gut! We dairy in northern Illinois and letting all of them warm up before you put them to work in the cold is mandatory. That said, great video loved the content!
Thanks Patrick. My buddy warned me when I drove the 8 speed powershift to be careful grabbing gears. I didn't mind it, definitely love the 15 speed better
I didn't know until I'd had my 4450 for 3 years and the service rep for my dealer (Blanchard Equip) told me. On the 15 speed, you can put the stick all the way to 15, and the tractor will start off in 8 and shift itself up to 15.
we have 4 tractors with quad range and 2 with power shift both are great but we notice the power shift seems to loose 5 to 10 hp because of the power shift i dairy farm in minnesota so i only use the quad range in the winter last week was 31 below actual temp 4440 run great on mixer great video
The syncro is a nice transmission but as far as shifting gears (bumping up a gear or bumping down a gear) the powershift and quad range are better for that
The 8 speed powershift gets a lot of hate but I didn't hate it when I drove it. I would definitely take one of the ones from this video over the 8 speed though
I know a guy who had a 4650 powershift at just over 6000 hours it went out, he got the transmission fully rebuilt after getting the bill he left it at the dealer, and brought home a used 4650 with quad range, he said he would never have another powershift due to cost to rebuild and short life, he also said the powershift was a pain on the loader. I wanted a powershift until I started hearing more about them, I will stick with the old quad ranges
We had neighbors that was IH but they bought 4840 with power shift, they hated it but it was first year in a big tractor, i loved power shift in our 3020 and 4020, things have come long way.
We had about the same setup as you a 4455 with a powershift 7400 power quad with a loader and a 4040 8 speed powershift and they all worked great for us
I grew up with quad range and I prefer it over the power shift mainly because You always know what gear your in without looking and I think forward to reverse is much handier. I drive a friends power shift and seems you are never in the gear you want or thought you were in but if you drove them all the time you may have the feel for it !! To each his own
When I first started driving the quad range I never felt I could find the right gear. The more I drove it the more I got use to it and I don't mind it that much
I drive 4440’s and 4640’s with both quad shifts and 8 speed power shifts. The power shift is definitely quicker from forward to reverse but the quad range will definitely help you find that perfect speed over ground when at PTO or full power. The ratio change between 6th to 7th and 7th to 8th on the power shift is brutal tho. I always clutch those shifts anyway. My favorite is my 8420T with the 16 speed power shift. Smooth as glass and lots of speed over ground choices.
I drove my buddy's 8 speed powershift and it was better than I anticipated. It was good if I was going from 3-5. Like you said it gets a little jumpy going 6-8. I like the 15 speed. Its easy to find the right gear
Well done well explained 👏 👍 powershift does lose some power from the engine compared to a manual. But for a days work the powershift wins for comfort and convenience. Great vid . Stay safe 🏴
Excellent explanation Mike. That was funny when you were talking about the tractor pulls. You guys are badass no one's gonna mess with you and steal that last place from you haha. Take it easy buddy
Thanks for explaining that Mike. Our John Deeres all had quad range. I especially like the shifting on our 3020. I'm guessing your 3010 is the same. Our neighbors didn't like the synchronized transmission but I really liked using it. You're right personal preference. I think there is a kitty wanting some pets. :)
I think south sask farmer has a pipe from the feed to the return on one of his remote spools which he puts in when warming up his tractor to circulate the backend oil, this might help your power shift warm up quicker.
For our purposes we have always run quad ranges because we feel that you get more power to the ground. Also if used properly they seem to last a little longer and easier to work on. That’s important when you are paying someone else to do it as that is generally labor is half of the bill. Also it’s much easier to skip gears. You can just run range shifter up a,b,c,d and you basically skip 4 gears .
I don’t know about the newer powershiftS put on the 40 series, 8 speed power shifts, weed cut about half an inch off that loop so you could shuttle between first forward and first reverse, I was always told to use a clutch when doing loader work, but there’s a couple times I know I didn’t never really had an issue with it until the brake bands started to come apart but that was about the time that machine left the farm and we started getting the 8000 series, I miss those old sound guard cabs
Have a 4250 with the powershift. 16,000 hours on the transmission, never been touched. Wintertime, use it on a JD 785 hydro- push spreader, worked great. Great for round baling . Did tillage with it , had no problems, but didn't go over tractors capacity. Have 4630 with quad, that's a hard shifting tractor though, but a honey of a tractor , hard to compare them two side by side
Good explanation. I've always want to pull and eight speed from 8 to 1 while going lol! I'd say the transmission in the 29's would be one of my favorites but that probably just cuz I've got two of them. The quad and power quad are also great. But since I like massey I'd have to say dyna shift is the best. Stay warm!
Thanks Josh. You stay warm too. You'll be tapping trees before we know it! OMG if you pulled that powershift from 8 to 1 I'd hope you put on a helmet and buckle up with a 5 point harness! I've never driven a massey. I think it would be cool to try
Yeah I know you can do that but with the tractor hooked up to the spreader and both remotes being used I'll just give it the extra time to warm up while I'm letting the barn cleaner run.
Well since you asked i prefer the powershift but only for easyjobs, i drive a 6110 and a 6410 myself so you know how thats work but i think you get used to everything if you dont know better, thanks Mike have a good day greetings from a Dutch dairyfarmer
If you grew up driving an 8600 Ford anything shifts better then those. Hell the first time I drove a 2940 synchronized trans tractor I couldn’t believe how nice they shifted with no grinding.
I don't know what size tractor you are looking for but if you are looking for a tractor in that 80-90 horsepower range that 2940 (or 2950, 2955) has that TSS transmission and its a great shifting tractor. I love it
I was thinking your reasoning was a cost of maintenance on an older tractor kind of thing. My Buddy has deere's and he always says its too expensive to repair a powershift.
Most of our tractors were red an desert sand an flambeau orange tractors some of those tractors I felt like I was driving a semi truck. Gear shift an clutch, hi low range.
Late to watching this, but you can warm up the hydraulics and transmission by putting a "jumper" hose in 1 set of remotes and running the SCV for a few minutes, and it heats up the oil. Same problem with the 19 speed, and the IVT is even worse. I've run almost every transmission JD has made, from the 6 speed in the "A" to the IVT. Any that have Left Hand Reverse are great for loader work. When I switch from a LHR to the Powershift 19, I often hit the turn signals! 😂
Haha I can imagine. On our wheel loader the forward/reverse switch is on the joystick. If you climb in the loader a lot of times you'll see the turn signal had been hit
I love it. I'm not sure about durability, but it is very nice to run. You find your working speed at the first detent, and can either slow down if you have to, or bypass detent to make turns on end rows. And with Field Cruise, it modulates speed to maintain PTO RPM's. Like going uphill cutting hay, it will slow down as drag on the motor increases. I'm sure it would be the same with a chopper. But a JD Tech said not to expect 10000 hours from it. My job has 3 tractors over 10k, 2 are 19 speed power shift, and 1 of them got a new trans at 14000 hours, the other is near 17k. And a 6420 with Power Quad around 11k. All have loaders.
I've got an old 2090 case with a 4 gear 3 speed Power shift always love that tractor but my in laws have several deere quad range I like them better and are cheaper to fix than a power shift clutch packs in the power shift are what makes that costly
Just be careful with the 2090 when the PTO is running and the tractor is in reverse like backing up when round baling that powershift transmission has a flaw in it if the tractor is in reverse and the PTO is running when you put your foot on the clutch to stop it will start eating the shift packs in the power shift had a neighbor that had one it cost him $14,000 twice to rebuild the powershift transmission you'll know you have a problem when you lose reverse he now round bales with a 4430 with a quad range transmission and uses the 2290 for field work
Interesting and informative 👍I don't know much about either so no comment My ford/new Holland I press the clutch and move a gear lever Cat playing with the cattle 🤣🤣 Take care stay safe cheers 👍🐜
we love power shift all are tractors have it when you go up hills its nice to be able to shift and not just shift 4 times and run out of power but are 4955 is a 15 speed power shift is a little more bumpy than are 4455 probly they bigger tractor but the 4440 4430 and 4020 have the 8 speed and dont get fooled when they say quad rang is better for tractor pulling my grandpa use the 4430 and would get 1st or 2 place in tractor pulling now i drove a 4430 quad and the shifting seemed more stiff that the ps but if i had to choose 1 it would be power shift because thats what im used to
Because at the time i was getting a lot of questions and comments about the syncro transmission. Which is why i called it infamous. I like that transmission too. Its what ibstarted driving on
@@mikep7810 oh ok. Yeah I learned on it when I was 11. Thought it was simple and effective. You have cleaned yours up very nice. The people that bought ours ran it ragged and left it outside for 20 years. Sad because we kept such good care of it, never left it out.
I grab 10 from neutral without clutching on both the 15 speed and 19 speed I like the power quad the best for loader work. Powershift for field work Quad range are good too Great video
Yeah I was just using the power quad for loader work when I borrowed the neighbors tractor to move round bales but it definitely was a pretty nice transmission
nice mike, i saw a 4450 4wd with a quad and loader with 9000 hours for 51k, yes case magnums had a 18 speed powershift we have one a i really like it I'm a red guy but i have no problem saying the ih tractors shifting suck you put them in a gear and let them there if you can at all help it, i love the powershifts all more then loader then anything that you can go for forward to revers quick in
@@mikep7810 from what I've heard the only difference is the speed jump is smaller and more consistent but basically the same as running the 15 speed from deere, I know we were told you can't rip the clutches out of the magnums I don't know how close it would be to the 4555
I was told growing up that quads holds up better than powershift . I don’t know really how true that is but all of our tractors are quads but we did have a 4840 till tha clutch pack went out then trade it for a quad
Great video! In my opinion I would prefer the quad range or a manual transmission. The power shift and IVT are good for people with lesser experience or if you are trying to vary speed a lot.
Its at Cazenovia Equipment getting some things worked on then when it comes back we will use it on the spreader when the 4250 is in the field and use it in hay
We had a 4020 synchro, 4440QR, 4450PS, and 4455PS. All of them were great transmissions. For simplicity, the old 8 speed synchro is hard to beat. And as you said, the powershift seems to lose a little power to the ground compared to the quad.
My grandfather used to pull horses he held last place for years also hahahaha. I like the dyna 4 transmission from Massey have a couple older case powershifts also. I kind of get used to what ever as long as its not a Belarus that transmission is to hard for anyone to understand lol
@@mikep7810 I had one a few years back just a small 1 that was enough for me lol. They are tough just hard to get used to. The shift pattern was side to side so basically the H pattern is turned. Lots of gears if you could find them lol I bought it for my wife on our anniversary she wasnt impressed hahaha
Niveau ressenti rien a voir. Puis après j ai conduit du 42 , 44 , 4755 en boite 15 c était juste magnifique. En comparaison des premier magnum case 7110 avec une boîte équivalente rien a voir. Le magnum horrible sur route mais au champs c était un monstre tout comme les JD

You can put jumper hose on rear svc to get hydraulic oil moving and warmed up
Yeah I know you can do that but with the tractor hooked up to the spreader and both remotes being used I'll just give it the extra time to warm up while I'm letting the barn cleaner run.
Well since you asked i prefer the powershift but only for easyjobs, i drive a 6110 and a 6410 myself so you know how thats work but i think you get used to everything if you dont know better, thanks Mike have a good day greetings from a Dutch dairyfarmer
Thanks Menno. I wouldn't mind a 6410. That would be a nice tractor to rake hay with
For sure
Nice video 👍. I've never drove a Deere besides the old Johny poppers, I've always been curious on the difference in transmissions
I hear ya. I've only driven a farmall 806. Not a bad tractor. I wouldn't mind test driving some of the other brands and see what they are like
Great awesome tractor mike
Thank you
Had it in the 4240 S, was nice and good one, power shift too but dont like it when it changes the groups
They are good transmissions
It's what you are comfortable with
I cut my teeth on quad and love them. We had all quad were I worked
in the late 70s , early 80s.
They are some good transmissions
Better fuel economy with the quad over the powershifts also. Both damn good transmissions!
They sure are John. Both are really good transmissions and gave the farmer good options
If you grew up driving an 8600 Ford anything shifts better then those.
Hell the first time I drove a 2940 synchronized trans tractor I couldn’t believe how nice they shifted with no grinding.
Yeah the 2940 shifts really nice. I remember driving your 8600. It was great as long as I didn't have to shift to another gear
I’m interested since I’ve only driven the synchro Deere’s. I’m hoping to start farming in a few years.
I don't know what size tractor you are looking for but if you are looking for a tractor in that 80-90 horsepower range that 2940 (or 2950, 2955) has that TSS transmission and its a great shifting tractor. I love it
Hi mike greetings from burley idaho 😁✌💪
Hi Carlos. Stay warm out in Idaho
@@mikep7810 greetings mike, if it fell snow last night and it is all covered with snow
I was thinking your reasoning was a cost of maintenance on an older tractor kind of thing. My Buddy has deere's and he always says its too expensive to repair a powershift.
Knock on wood we have not had to have work done to any of the tractors with the powershifts in them. I hope we never do
Most of our tractors were red an desert sand an flambeau orange tractors some of those tractors I felt like I was driving a semi truck. Gear shift an clutch, hi low range.
I've driven a bunch of John Deeres, I've driven Fords but I really haven't driven too many red tractors. Be interesting to drive a few a round
@@mikep7810 older ones were fun to operate
What did you think of the ivt. Thats 1 transmission I've never drove before
Yeah I hope we never have to get into the powershifts. They sound really costly
Just be careful with the 2090 when the PTO is running and the tractor is in reverse like backing up when round baling that powershift transmission has a flaw in it if the tractor is in reverse and the PTO is running when you put your foot on the clutch to stop it will start eating the shift packs in the power shift had a neighbor that had one it cost him $14,000 twice to rebuild the powershift transmission you'll know you have a problem when you lose reverse he now round bales with a 4430 with a quad range transmission and uses the 2290 for field work
Interesting and informative 👍I don't know much about either so no comment
My ford/new Holland I press the clutch and move a gear lever
Cat playing with the cattle 🤣🤣
Take care stay safe cheers 👍🐜
Glad you enjoyed the video
we love power shift all are tractors have it when you go up hills its nice to be able to shift and not just shift 4 times and run out of power but are 4955 is a 15 speed power shift is a little more bumpy than are 4455 probly they bigger tractor but the 4440 4430 and 4020 have the 8 speed and dont get fooled when they say quad rang is better for tractor pulling my grandpa use the 4430 and would get 1st or 2 place in tractor pulling now i drove a 4430 quad and the shifting seemed more stiff that the ps but if i had to choose 1 it would be power shift because thats what im used to
Yeah the powershifts are definitely nice for those long days in the field
Thanks for the explanation Mike. Im assuming you'd want the quad range on a 7810??
Thats an interesting question. I've never driven the 19 speed powershift. It would be nice to try it and see. I just wanna run a 7810! LOL
Lol👍👍
First veiw from your biggest fan! Keep it up!
Thanks man, I appreciate it
why do you call the synchro transmission infamous? we had the same 3010 diesel, and used it for everything. Worked good.
I grab 10 from neutral without clutching on both the 15 speed and 19 speed
I like the power quad the best for loader work. Powershift for field work
Quad range are good too
Great video
The power quad definitely was great for loader work. That right hand forward and reverse lever was perfect
@@mikep7810 yeah left hand reverser would be even better. My 7410 is a 1997 They didn’t make LHR till 1998 I believe
We have a4040 quad range, 2555 tss. The quad is reliable solid. The tss can shift 8 gears on the go
Great for road driving
Yes the TSS is a great tractor for going down the road. Shifts so smooth
Deere stepped it up when they went to the power quad that’s sweet
Yeah I was just using the power quad for loader work when I borrowed the neighbors tractor to move round bales but it definitely was a pretty nice transmission
nice mike, i saw a 4450 4wd with a quad and loader with 9000 hours for 51k, yes case magnums had a 18 speed powershift we have one a i really like it I'm a red guy but i have no problem saying the ih tractors shifting suck you put them in a gear and let them there if you can at all help it, i love the powershifts all more then loader then anything that you can go for forward to revers quick in
I've never driven a case magnum with the 18 speed. Guys seem to love those tractors. Be nice to try one and check them out
@@mikep7810 from what I've heard the only difference is the speed jump is smaller and more consistent but basically the same as running the 15 speed from deere, I know we were told you can't rip the clutches out of the magnums I don't know how close it would be to the 4555
I prefer the older model international harvester grind-o-matic transmission. lol. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
Haha I've heard about them but never had the pleasure of grinding, I mean, driving them! I do have a video up where I tedded hay with a farmall 806
Good vedio. Thanks for explaning
Thank you John
You didnt mention shifting the range on a quad- Do you need to clutch and stop to change A-B-C-D or just clutch ?
I usually just clutch
I’m a fan of the 19 speed power shift in our 7800
I've never used the 19 speed. That would be nice to try one of them
I like the old school synchro transmission
Thats the 1st tractor I started driving on. They are good old tractors
I started on a 2510 diesel wide front with my uncle. I miss running those old tractors
I was told growing up that quads holds up better than powershift . I don’t know really how true that is but all of our tractors are quads but we did have a 4840 till tha clutch pack went out then trade it for a quad
I have heard that too. When it comes to used tractors its all about how the previous guy treated them.
@@mikep7810 😂 facts
save the best for last i like that great video thank you
Haha, I don't expect a trophy for last place so you gotta put some sort of positive spin on it! LOL
Great video! In my opinion I would prefer the quad range or a manual transmission. The power shift and IVT are good for people with lesser experience or if you are trying to vary speed a lot.
That transmission thats in that 2940 is a great transmission. That shifts so smooth. Like a car
Now that I have attended the Mike P John Deere transmission driving school do I get a certificate so I can go test drive a John Deere?
Haha you don't get the certificate until you complete the driving part. I can't wait to see you drive the John Deere! LOL
What happened to the 4040?
Its at Cazenovia equipment getting worked on
How many tractors do you have at the farm
7. We have a 4555, 4055, 4250, 4040, 2940, 3010, and a 520
Whats going on with the 4040
Its at Cazenovia Equipment getting some things worked on then when it comes back we will use it on the spreader when the 4250 is in the field and use it in hay
What is max speed 15 PowerShift???
Our 4055 gets up to about 19-20 mph
Love the quad in a loader tractor
The power shift sucks for that work
Quads are definitely handy for loader work
I absolutely hate stepping round & tripping on the shifter sticks on my open station 2940 😡always grinds alittle to🤣
We have it on our 2940 open cab too. They did grind a little. Still, for me, better than harnessing horses.
I remember we used to have a 2640 with those dual shifters between your legs. I remember tripping on them a few times
I like the Quad range the best 15 speed PowerShift is better than the old 8 speed PowerShift. PowerShift takes more power from the engine forsure
Yeah the 15 speed powershift is definitely better than the 8
What is the 4040s future
We will put it on the spreader when the 4250 is doing tillage or on the blower then probably ted hay, maybe haul hay wagons
I like power shifts but use mostly on tillage John Deere 4849 8 speed
I didn't mind the 8 speed when I used my buddy's 4840.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Matthew
I grew up on the 8 speed power shift. Power shift is easier for a novice to operate, but it all becomes what works for you! Ford, chevy or dodge!
They are all great when they are working and they all suck when they break
@@mikep7810 so true! Lol
I also prefer the qaud we have 3 sound gard with it 4040 4255 and 4030 👍
Thats a nice lineup of tractors
Like you said, different transmissions work better in different situations. Too many options LOL
I know too many options. I want to try them all! LOL
We had a 4020 synchro, 4440QR, 4450PS, and 4455PS. All of them were great transmissions.
For simplicity, the old 8 speed synchro is hard to beat.
And as you said, the powershift seems to lose a little power to the ground compared to the quad.
Those old synchros were good transmissions. I spent a lot of time on a 3010 and 3020 as a kid raking and tedding hay
My grandfather used to pull horses he held last place for years also hahahaha. I like the dyna 4 transmission from Massey have a couple older case powershifts also. I kind of get used to what ever as long as its not a Belarus that transmission is to hard for anyone to understand lol
I had a neighbor that had a Belarus. Never drove it. It looked cool
Quad power shift
There you go
I like the quad range and the syncro range the power shift is ok but it takes power from your tractor
I use to not like the quad range but the more I used it the more I didn't mind it as much
@@mikep7810 yeah they kinda grow on you
Powershift is nice for baling
It sure is

It's just like our 7810. Kinda
Pretty much. The quad range is nice but the power quad is really nice
Jd model 50 with hand clutch
There you go. Now you're talking
You know a good loader tractor would be the 7810 with the power quad in it
Or just a 7810 with a power quad without a loader would be perfect too!
If you put enough fuel to it the powershift will keep with the quad range at the pull.💵💵
Haha yes it will
Niveau ressenti rien a voir.

Haha as soon as I find some rich investor that really wants me to get one LOL
Powershift goes a whole lot slower in reverse
Yes it does
I'd say your 3010 has better tran for bucket
Not bad. 3010 and 4040
As long as it is not the Synchro Mesh (spelling?), I don't really care! That thing made no sense whatsover.

Haha wouldn't be a good thing to steal for a speedy get away
Interesting stuff. I didn’t know there were so many options with tractor trannies. I only have to use the auto in my Ram and the 5-speed manual in my Triumph Scrambler. 🙂
Different years and different models had different transmissions
