I am Hungarian living in Orban's land and I lived through how our democracy was slowly destroyed, I would like to say you americans don't yet know how deep is the rabbit hole.... it i s a lot deeper than you think... YOU HAVE TO FIGHT otherwise you might loose everything...

@@rockjano Yes, democracy has been weakened in Hungary. There are at least 2 issues as to why that isn't a lesson to Americans: 1. Most Americans have little or no knowledge of anything that happens outside their country. They in fact have little or no knowledge of what is even happening in their own country. 2. There is a very large and vocal group of Americans who want some kind of authoritarian government. Again, they likely aren't bright enough and well informed enough to know what that means. They just don't like the messiness of democracy.

@@thehylers1021 You know in 2010 when Orban got his first 2/3 majority (you can do everything with that here you can rewrite constitution, change election law, whatever etc...) they promised us yes they got the majority but they would not do all of that and they DID, they just lied.
We still have a kind of democracy but they absolutely changed the election law to favour them, it just works for them.
They destroyd all news outlets changed all the TV stations for them and after 8-10 yeras the opposition become soo weak that they bought them as well... so until recently we not even have opposition.. now we have a new party (a right wing party but now even that does not matter) who seems to be capable and we will have an election in 2026 and now we fight for that... and I don't know what will happen.
You are just in the first steps how a democracy CAN turn into a autoctracy...

Well, I am 74. When I was 67, I agreed with you, because I was comparatively young and inexperienced. These guys saying how disappointed they are in the country for not electing the "anybody but Trump" candidate, victimize themselves and infantilize voters. There may be some who won't vote for a woman, but not enough to matter. Harris was a bad candidate. Elevated by a cynical Presidential aspirant who valued her sectionality over any proven ability, and coddled by a party who gave her little to do, she dropped her champion like a hot potato when her ego was stroked by the handlers. She never grew beyond the expensive talking points dropped in the Trump debate, and clutched lies about being "President for all Americans" despite numerous pandering statements to group ideology over her entire term. This was never a referendum on Kamala's womanhood; it was a judgement on a party that stands for division and the hubris of thinking America is a country of children that needs to be schooled in morality. The fact is, Tulsi Gabbard is ready and qualified to be President right now, and if the Dems had an ounce of integrity, she would be. Perhaps you will mature into a critical thinker who takes the effort to dive deeper, beyond knee jerk liberalism, like I did over the last 7 years. If so, I and the future female President will welcome you. But her name won't be Harris.

They have the freedom to do what they want. The broad issue on a societal scale is a lack of mentorship for young men and the demands of fathers to sacrifice all of their time and energy to earn and keep their families afloat. We've lost mentorship at the individual scale and now the collective scale, so they are looking for something to replace what they have lost. Apprenticeship and mentorship is what they've lost.

I firmly believe that we as thinkers and intellectuals need to keep up the good fight and speak truth to power, so, Ed and Scott, please keep doing the important work that you're doing for society: listening to and advocating for young men who have felt left behind and should not be left to "bowl alone". We are seeing the consequences of De Tocqueville's and Putnam's warnings about America.
Civil society has truly migrated to social media and podcasts so the civic significance of what you and Ed do cannot be overstated. As a student of history, my deepest concern for the U.S. right now is that the "sound" establishment types will no longer be in the room for the Trump restoration so we have a Charles I-type leader who believes in his own impunity and his own divine right to rule.

Paltry consolation, I know, but you're not alone in feeling that way at the moment. The prospects ahead are bleak indeed and seem to have a surreal and frightening inevitability to them; especially in the wake of the stunning rebuke to sanity, or even just basic decency, that was delivered the other day by countless millions of deeply ignorant, utterly confused, woefully misinformed, irrationally fearful, aggrieved, resentful, surprisingly stupid, and yes, also a not insignificant number of bitterly hateful or racist people... for a multitude of "reasons" that often don't make sense.
There's some serious soul searching that will be (and very much needs to be) going on in the U.S. (but not only - it's also happening in other places around the world) over the next several months, years... who knows how long?... about the shockingly deep pool of awfulness (which is to understate it, because turns out it's more like a veritable aquifer of toxicity) that Trump is perversely hardwired (or maybe it's genetics!?) to tap into and draw his energy from (kinda like the battery he fancifully imagines powers one's body - seriously, I am not making that up, btw, this is how stupidly childish his imagination really is - no insult to children).
Sorry for the rambling. Just really feeling the need at the moment to vent - a lot. It's just all so hard to process. Especially when so many other people are blithely oblivious to the catastrophe that is about to unfold, in real time. In the worst case scenario, one that will finally provide an explanation to those of us boomers who grew up never really being able to get our heads around how a ridiculous clown like Hitler and his malicious gallery of incompetent rogues and thugs could have ever fooled the people of Germany into going along with everything that happened afterwards. Never expected to see the answer being delivered on the news every day.
Seems hopeless and dire at the moment, but don't give up. Somehow or other, we'll find a way through this impending shit show. At some point reality is going to kick in and assert itself in ways that are unavoidable... Meanwhile, chill - don't want to sound flippant, I know it's hard - and struggle to find enjoyment wherever/however you can. Also, start taking action and get involved with groups or organizations that are committed to pushing back against this bullshit agenda of fascist nonsense.
Again... don't give up. We lost a battle, not a war. The fight has to continue and just surrendering isn't an option because these evil f*ckers don't give a shit about people like you and me.

IMO one of the main reasons the dems lost is because Biden allowed the progressive wing to take over his agendas. People wanted a moderate in office, not a someone that is part of a party associated with the defund the police nonsense, trans rights being shoved into your face 24/7, and the failure to respond to the border crossing fiasco. This allowed the maga people to amplify the msg that it is them that will solve these immediate issues, not the democrats.

Inflation and immigration really hurt Harris. Inflation has come down, and the US managed it better than any other country, but the problem is that prices are still high, especially on groceries, and this hurts people who are lower on the socioeconomic scale. For these people, all the other good economic news means very little. On immigration, Dems/Progressive have to find an answer. Making the economic argument that immigrants take jobs that Americans don't want and support the economy does not work. The argument that we are a nation of immigrants and should continue our history of welcoming people to this country does not work. Trump demonized immigrants and still increased his margins with Latino voters. Biden desperately wanted to sign the Lankford bill, but Trump adroitly knocked it out. Obama understood the political pitfalls of immigration and earned the name Deporter and Chief. We have to figure this issue out, or we will keep losing elections.

Gaza cost her the election. Dems won Senate races down ballot in MI, WI, PA. Harris lost in those same states by a lower margin than the number of Muslim voters in each of those states. Those voters appear to have voted downballot.

@@ITTester-o2mNo he doesn't get it. Prices aren't going to fall under Trump or anyone. People don't understand inflation, nor do they even look at the trend data.
Keep losing elections? The Dems won the presidency from Trump like four years ago. Just stop it.
People don't understand democracy, economics, immigration et al. And every four years everyone pretends they do.
The electoral college is the right system for all the wrong reasons and poorly executed. We need an electoral college elected locally with the people's needs as their only mandate. They should be well paid for the job - set for life. And punished for any future corruption. Those people should interview and choose the president. End this reality TV show approach to deciding important matters.
