Wife and me taking over her grandmother's house, living, dinning and kitchen all floors replaced been watching you for some tips. This my first time. Pray for me!
Just a couple of suggestions. The stripes always go on top for both subloors and roof sheathing for three reasons. The first one is the one you showed to assist with nailing. Second is the stripe side is coarse and water resistant which makes it safer to walk on. Third is that smooth side has the engineering stamp which is what the building inspector will be looking for to be sure it meets code for the span. You also want to install it stripe side up when weather and inspections are not an issue. This is because the sheathing has a cup to it and curls up at the edge. The board is in tension when nailed down this way. It is best to nail from the center to the edge. If you nail it cup side up, the board has to be compressed and the upward tension can cause nails to pop in the middle.. At 6:39 in the video you can see a board with a cup in it that is jammed into the wall and then nailed starting from the other end and going toward the wall. As you nail it toward the wall, the cup is eliminated but the board gets longer and you may eliminate the expansion gap by the time you get to the wall. The same is true when you are butting two pieces of non tongue and groove plywood together. The bump feature on most nail guns is a nice feature. But there is also a flat tip that is supposed to be used when nailing sheathing so you don't overdrive the nails. This is not usually an issue with a subfoor that is glued and nailed, but it is an issue with roof sheathing. When you overdrive a nail in sheathing, you reduce the holding power of the nail and your 1/2" sheathing is now 7/16" or less and you will fail roof inspections in areas that experience high wind. The claw tip is best for framining when you want to grip a stud for toe nailing and overdriving a nail doesn't matter. And last, you should always try to butt factory edge to factory edge for the best fit. I start by measuring the room to determine if it is square and where the sheets will fall so I don't end up with a sliver on the end. I snap a chalk line on the side where I want to start. If necessary, start with a cut side against the wall and the factory edge on the chalk line. Contunue to the other side where cut ends will be against the wall.
Joel I’m really enjoying seeing the progression of this house improvement. You have such a nice way of explaining things, I could listen to you talk for hours. Xxxx
First time watching. I'm preparing to replace a subfloor and this is by far the best, most informative video I have watched. Thank you! I definitely have subscribed to your channel.
Im not doing any home improvements right now but just wanted to say this is a good idea. I always search youtube for answer when I need help with things like this!
Hi Joel your lame wife sent me 🤣 I am a VERY long time watcher of Bonnie's vlogs, please tell her that she IS NOT A FAILURE! She is a mom, and wife, sometimes we have things slip our minds. Much love from South GA!
I wasn't sent by your wife who thinks she's lame, but I do enjoy how you actually explain things in easy terms so even those of us who have no idea about any of this actually gets it. Thanks Joel!
Joel this is totally your element , you can just tell how much you enjoy this. It is hard work but you can tell you enjoy much more than just being around the house. It is good to see your dad getting involved too! : - )
You would have a heart failure on how my husband and father patched the floor in the nursery. If you would have had this posted 2 weeks ago i could have done it myself lol. I'm learning so much hopefully one day I can put all this information to work.
I am loving watching your videos! I like learning all about remodeling/building a house. It’s not something I would normally be interested in, but you explain it all so well, and you are doing such an amazing job, that I find myself looking forward to the next video! Keep up the great work. I love watching Bonnie’s channel also, and getting to know your sweet family.😊
I figured out that you were putting wood glue down before each sheet was laid. You mentioned it a little later in passing too. Great explanations overall!
I always watch...u come on at 3:00 and Bonnie at 4:00...U remind me of watching This Old House with my dad when I was younger...he used to say "I hate that guy, he has EVERYTHING" lol.
Love the part about the green lines!! Whew knew! How about a video about the special features tools have like this?? So helpful! Please tell me y’all are moving with Ellie and Jared! Love y’all together!
Joel. On your video today in laying subfloors. I am interested in what you put on the joists prior to nailing boards down. It appeared to be foam. I thought that you used liquid nail
Noice! Gotta say I can't wait to bust into my house and start the expansion of my little bitty master bath can't wait to watch it all come together and the finish product should be orgasmic lol its always super gratifying to see the fruits of our labor!
Consider straddling the joist when nailing, with one foot on each side of joist, so your weight is split among both sides. That will pull the board down on top of the joist evenly so it’s less likely to pop up.
When you were drawing out where to cut the vent I was thinking Nooooo Joel don't waste your time!! Lol I thought it was fine in the middle of the floor personally
We had a vent in the middle of the floor. It was fine except we had to replace it a little more often than the others because people sometimes hit it with their shoes and bent the corners and the kids always put stuff down it.
With such attention to detail, I am shocked you nailed the subfloor down! I know you used the subfloor glue too, but man that's gonna squeak eventually!
Still loved watching bonnies “lame” clip lol I always love watching the vlogs even if it was only 2 minutes hahah ! And I also love coming here to see more of Joel 🙂 have a great weekend Hoellein family
This is genuinely fast becoming one of my favourite channels! My only (hopefully constructive) criticism would be can you slow down a bit when you’re explaining stuff? I very much doubt I’ll be laying floors anytime soon 😂 but there was one bit where I had to go back three times to understand what you were doing. It obviously all comes so naturally to you, Joel; you make it look so easy 😊
What is the foam that you are putting down onto the floor joist stud that you added to the top and what is the reason for it. Thanks! Getting ready to level my floor on my old 1942 home.
"Your lame wife sent me". Also tell Bonnie not to worry life happens. We love your videos. Whenever you guys get them posted is just fine for us! (Sending you guys hugs from Canada!)
Are those 2x3's on top of the joists? Is that a thing? Would be a lot easier to install subfloor like that than hoping you did everything perfect to get only 1/2"-3/4" of space for the subfloor to lay on.
At 6:58 you mention how the air gun nails are sticking up and the impact per clip is not strong enough. For the nails sticking up or for the majority of them if not all, eventually will stick up. Look up online or your local hardware store for black hardwood floor screws. Drill screw drive it. The reason being because if the house has a leaking roof, the floor can get damaged and then the nails stick up and make that creaky noise when you walk by from time to time.
@@TodaysTask Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! This is very helpful! I needed to know this for when I do my subfloor in my kitchen which will be this month. I really didn't want to deal with screwing it in, so I was looking for the workaround, and I think this is it! I really appreciate the info!
Great work but aren't the screws better than nails, even better than ring shank nails, to prevent movement and squeaking in the future? great tips in your video.
Looking good in there! Hey, how often do y'all check your p.o. box? I sent a package to Bonnie. It's a custom trucker hat I got made for her. Want to make sure she got it. My name is Ann. I hope she loves it!❤Could you pls let me know if she did? Thank you!
If i want to replace the sub floor of my living room, is it possible to do that. Or is it that i will have to take all the walls off and replace plywood of the entire floor?
“Your lame wife sent me” As much as I’d like a hat $35 which is roughly £30 plus international shipping plus customs and excise costs which can be £20-£30 Its a tad to expensive. But they are nice caps.

I hope whoever ends up buying this house finds these videos and sees just how much work Joel put into it. Looking very nice!
Glad to see someone doing it the right way.

What about 1/8" spacing between sheets?
Old content helping ppl. I love it! Thank you
Respect on how you clean every single cut and job. I wish my guys did this. They usually take 45 minutes end of the day to clean and sweep up.
This is the best step by step video for installing sub flooring I have found on YT.... Thank You!!!
Im not doing any home improvements right now but just wanted to say this is a good idea. I always search youtube for answer when I need help with things like this!
Bonnie sent me here..... after what had happened on the main channel!!!! Love you Bonnie and Joel!!!❤️❤️
Screws? Much better than having a squeak in a few years!
You hit the nail on the head with that tip
Nothing more satisfying than this point of the build. All the rough ins and framing. My favourite part!
You're *amazing* wife sent me over. I've enjoyed watching these videos. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.
Watching Joel cut around the air vent, knowing he is going to have to patch it back up later 😂😂

I watched your video first. I’ll go check out the vlog. Joel, I’m impressed by all your hard work. I love seeing your progress!
same but something is telling me that Bonnie is being lame! 🤣🤣🤣
Great job, man. I actually learned some tips by watching this video. You're a solid worker 💪 thank you.

After 30 videos this explains everything. Thanks sir

I love todays Task! Great videos and info
At 10:02 is that really how a square is used? And aren't screws better than nails?
I love how you do it by yourself that’s how I usually work.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience !
I figured out that you were putting wood glue down before each sheet was laid. You mentioned it a little later in passing too. Great explanations overall!
Great video brother I’ve personally never done subfloor but I look forward to it now with all the tips thanks

Thanks! Great video. What is the gooey stuff used to glue it down? Does that help with decoupling for sound?

Good job and good job. Good content, get right into the point, nice filming and clear sound. Good luck in UA-cam industry.
Your amazing, beautiful & hilarious wife sent me! She thinks she’s lame, I think she’s human and also the best 💜

Great work, love the details. Appreciate the video, helped me out for sure!
Big fan overall- for the information and the host 😍
Do you need to leave a gap in between the boards or on the outside edges? Doing a bathroom
What is the foam that you are putting down onto the floor joist stud that you added to the top and what is the reason for it. Thanks! Getting ready to level my floor on my old 1942 home.
Screw the wood down, prevents squeaky floors in the future. Nailing is for basic construction only.

Can't wait till its done
How do you lubricate the logs before laying OSB?
What size nails are you using to nail subfloor and what kind of adhesive was in that manual gun you spread on the joist? Thank yo
I love your videos ! Plus I really need to fix the subfloor in my apartment....
What kind of nails are you using in that nail gun? Length? Gauge? Style? Thanks for the informative video!
Happy to help.
They are 3.25 inch ring shank nails. That floor did not creek at all once I was done.
@@TodaysTask Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! This is very helpful! I needed to know this for when I do my subfloor in my kitchen which will be this month. I’m trying to do replace the subfloor in my attic, do I need to remove/gut my walls?
I don't think you do unless they are rotten.
Thank you so much !
Thank you. Great video and tips.
Is that crawl space conditioned? What is the spray foam doing on the sides considering there is exposed dirt under floor?
You have m as by talents my friend!!’ Nice work!!
8:56 and 15:00 looks like you installed it with the waxed side up??? Isn't that incorrect? shouldn't that side be down?
Great work but aren't the screws better than nails, even better than ring shank nails, to prevent movement and squeaking in the future? great tips in your video.
Your wife sent me, Joel. Love your videos!!!
I really love watching today’s task Even when your wife forgets to put up a video
Which side of the plywood is put down.
Rad channel dude, subscribed! Thanks for the great info amigo
We love your family❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love watching the house come together! How did you learn to do everything?
Even if your lame wife didn’t send us! We’d still WATCHHHHH! Yeahhh
will this method work with plywood?
What's is the best wood for subflooring?
What adhesive are you using?
Hello what is that blue thing ur putting?
I have zero faith that pulte took the time to do anything you did to do a quality job.
Loved the vid!
Looking good in there! Hey, how often do y'all check your p.o. box? I sent a package to Bonnie. It's a custom trucker hat I got made for her. Want to make sure she got it. My name is Ann. I hope she loves it!❤Could you pls let me know if she did? Thank you!
Osb instead of plywood?
What type/size nailer would I need to buy to do this?
A framing nailer, but you will want to use flooring nails with it.
Your lame wife sent me !! Aahaahaa! No but really, I am enjoying seeing the progress of the house. You are truly gifted!
Do you lay the subfloor sheets with the cupped side up or do you find it doesn't matter?
If there is any cupping, you always want it put down. Thanks for the question.
If i want to replace the sub floor of my living room, is it possible to do that. Or is it that i will have to take all the walls off and replace plywood of the entire floor?
Yes you can replaced just floors and no walls.
You will have to cut next to the walls as close as you can, good luck.
What sealant are you using to stop the squeaks? Also did you use the sealant under the 1x3 shims?
I used liquid Nails under every board, and on top of them for the floor boards.
How come there is no expansion gap?
To cut out the vent you could use a router with a bearing on the end.
“Your lame wife sent me” As much as I’d like a hat $35 which is roughly £30 plus international shipping plus customs and excise costs which can be £20-£30 Its a tad to expensive. But they are nice caps.
I wonder how many new tools Joel has purchased for this house project! 🤔
We don't talk about that or I will get caught......
Should you be wearing ear plugs ?
Bonnie sent us! ps she's NOT lame. We love her!
Are you putting foam on the joists before laying the subfloor?
It is a subfloor glue that comes out as a foam and them turns to a jelly like glue after.
Where can you purchase the tung and groove sub flooding?
It is available at Lowes, Home Depot, and all lumber yards.
I watched you before “your lame wife sent me”. Love watching both channels
How thick is that subfloor? 3/4? Why not do 1 inch
3/4 is plenty strong for this situation. I think 1 inch would have been overkill and super expensive for this project.
