I had to deal with the same filter and at first I tried snapping it into the cap (where it can spin easily) and then aligning that nipple with the hole and then screwing it in. it failed miserably as the nipple snapped and the drain was open causing low oil pressure. Got another filter and placed the filter in there first (with the nipple in the drain hole) and then screwed on the cap. All is good but that was a close call to disaster. I hate the design on this filter and all of it was to save some money on a built in drain valve like all other audis have (on the non-FSI v8s and the v6s).
@Mike: The first time I did this, I got almost 8 quarts out. Today I went to change the oil, but can only get 2-3 quarts out. Before I started, the car computer says the system car computer says the system was full. Now it is showing 2/3 full. Where/why is the old oil hiding from my MightyVac? Are there windage trays in the oil pan? Please help.
Hi no it is not necessary but saves you from having to get under the car and remove the belly pan to drain the oil. The OTC I used came from Amazon and they go for around $170 USD. I used a manual extractor for years (Pela) on other cars when the oil filter was on top like these.

An oil extractor is the preferred method for these cars and saves having to raise and support the vehicle and remove the belly pans. Pretty sure a manual extractor would be less than an oil change at the dealer

sorry not sure about windage trays. If you do not get enough out, try it via the drain plug to see how much more comes out.

Hi I believe it does just easier to do it from the top since that is where the filter is and saves removing the belly pan.
What is the size in mm on the tube that goes into the dipstick housing

Did it take 8 quarts or did just topped it off to 7 quarts?
I can only get 7 quarts before it shows full on the display
